Podcast Recap: Cleveland 105, L.A. Clippers 94 (or Just How Good is This Team?)
2015-02-06https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/clipping-the-clippers-cavs-the
Welcome to CtB Podcast episode 60! Tom, Mallory, and I watched the Cavs disassemble the Clippers for three quarters last night, and decided that we had to podcast about it. The Cavs built a 32 point lead in the first three quarters, and completely dominated the frustrated Clippers, who picked up five techs, a flagrant foul, and a Matt Barnes ejection in the contest. Blake Griffin led the Clips with 16 and eight rebounds, but was -24 for the game. Kevin Love led Cleveland with 24 points and nine rebounds in 29 minutes, while LeBron kicked in 23 and nine assists, with only two turnovers in 28 minutes. That’s efficiency, my friends.
Using a main rotation of the starters + Tristan Thompson, Iman Shumpert, and Matthew Dellavedova, the Cavs were up 94-63 going into the final frame, before David Blatt cleared the bench. Shawn Marion, Mike Miller, James Jones, and Brendan Haywood got to play, and the Cavs starters got to rest. That led to a 31-11 quarter for the Clips, but it was all smiles in Cleveland at that point, despite a big quarter from the surly Clippers bench.
After the game, Chris Paul put his foot in his mouth when talking of standout referee Lauren Holtkamp, and had these lovely words to say about one of her calls.
There’s no way that can be a tech. … That’s ridiculous. If that’s the case, this might not be for her.
Personally, I thought Holtkamp did a nice job of not letting the whinefest from the Clippers get out of hand, and that Paul will probably face a hefty fine. The Clips seemed to want to junk up the game with hard fouls and chippy talk, and Lauren would have none of it.
Topics for this pod included the recap, discussion of our new favorite ref, positive signs from Kevin Love, Cavs win streak predictions, playoff predictions, MVP, ROY, COY,most improved, and an NBA finals argument. You can listen above, or directly on Soundcloud, or on iTunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/ctb/id901486230 — Go Cavs!
OK. I made it through. It was a good listen. good job guys.
Who’s everybody taking in the GSW/Hawks tilt tonight? I’m gonna say GSW wins by 12…
GSW by 8. Hawks are not as good as people think they are.
Can we all agree that the refereeing was pretty atrocious for the Clips yesterday? I mean, it didn’t cost them the game or anything close to that, but the Paul Tech and the Deandre Jordan Tech were worse than head scratchers. That was horrible calls, Paul was right. He maybe shouldn’t be shouting it to the media, but his words were true.
The Paul tech is the only one I found questionable… but you never know what he actually said to her, or if it was a final result of his continuous yammering (it certainly looked like he was complaining incessantly in the first half). The Doc tech was legit, the first Barnes tech was legit because his play even leading up to that point was borderline dirty, the second Barnes tech was deserved for screaming in the refs face (wasn’t even Lauren who gave him that one) and the DJ tech was absolutely deserved… you could hear him scream GD! from… Read more »
It was a game that, with the lead the Cavs had, could have deteriorated into a fight. Since it was not tightly contested, there was no reason NOT to call the T’s. As I said before, it is inevitable that teams that can’t beat us on the court will try to beat us physically – hoping that we’ll lose our will to play hard. They are going to scout us and determine the only chance they have is to be physical – and they’ll be right. We’re going to see a lot of games like this. That’s why we need… Read more »
Also, the Cavs would have beaten them anyway with their stellar D and movement on offense, but the Clips didn’t make things any easier on themselves by being their usual whiny, weak-minded selves…
When Chris Paul launched that contested out of rhythm corner 3 I thought “maybe this game isn’t for him.”
HAHAHAHA…. I like that one Tom!
The Jordan tech was not a head scratcher, by the report I got. He yelled, “GD-IT!” very loudly. Refs are gonna tech you for yelling obscenities. The Paul tech, I can’t speak to, but if an example needs to be made to get those guys to treat her with respect, I could give two craps. I’m so sick of teams that constantly whine getting calls. The Cavs have to be one of the least T-ed up teams in the league, and sometimes it hurts them. Glad to see it evened up.
Jordan was a T all the way. The TNT replay picked up his GD-it loud and clear. The TNT crew, who had been dubious before the replay, all instantly said, Yep, that’s a tech.
I don’t know what Paul said, but his expression and body language were pretty in-your-face nasty.
And really, you have to blame the Clippers for not getting the message to knock it off by about the third T.
Should we be worried about our 2nd unit? Not blaming Blatt at all for playing LBJ a lot of minute with the way our bench is playing.
Nah. That was the third unit that stunk.
You could call that the glue factory line up.
Hahaha. Love it.
We should have win by 30 pts and hold the clippers under 80 pts.
I doubt Miller or Jones get any PT during the playoffs. And Haywood also known as “The Contract” might be gone at that point.
Miller will get PT. So will Ray Allen.
OK. I’m going to go cook up a batch of liquid crystals and listen to CtB while doing it. It better be as positive as advertised. I don’t want to be throwing glassware all over the place in rage.
Cols in full-on Heisenberg mode… I like it!
On the Chris Paul stuff: If you read more into what he was describing to the media and look at all the circumstances, his comments really aren’t sexist but have to do with the ref being a rookie. Paul is head of the NBAPA and he is fully aware that his assessment of the officiating carries weight. If he feels that ridiculous techs were being given out, they very may well have been. I missed the game last night so didn’t see the techs in question, but when described from the Clippers’ perspective it seems like the new ref may… Read more »
She was quoted as saying something to the effect of he wouldn’t have said that about a male ref… and she’s probably right…
Do you know which comment of his specifically that she said that about?
The last one about that maybe this isn’t for her…
I’d be curious to know the last time any player publicly suggested a rookie ref didn’t belong in the league. If the answer is never, then it’s not unreasonable to infer some sexism on Paul’s part.
It was definitely sexism. He would never have said that about a male ref.
Phil, I can agree with that for the most part, but the situation is pretty unique: you have a highly self-aware president of the NBAPA in Chris Paul whose team was given 5 techs in a regular season game — for infractions that were debatable at the very least — by a rookie referee who made several disagreeable calls in a previous game with the Clippers (so there’s some history already there). Check the ESPN post on the matter: http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/12288601/referees-union-backs-nba-female-ref-lauren-holtkamp-personal-comments-chris-paul-los-angeles-clippers The Clippers as a whole shared similar sentiments to Paul, so it seems pretty clear to me the issues regarding… Read more »
You and many others seem to not have noticed that the Clippers were down about 25 and had quit playing and were just throwing punches. Paul is lucky he did not get a Flagrant 2 for the foul on Moz, in which case he would have been in the locker room by that point.
His comments may or may not have had anything to do with the ref being a woman, but they were certainly meant to intimidate a rookie ref, as in “I’m the prez of the PA, don’t call fouls on me”.
Did you watch the game? Not an indictment, just curious if you did. Having watched it and rewatched some parts of it, the only potentially egregious tech call was the one the ref made against CP3 for the out of bounds play. We only have his side of what he said to her (since refs aren’t allowed by their union to speak to specific calls). What he claims to have said sounds innocuous enough, but that’s his version. Even if he didn’t say anything that warranted a tech at that time, it’s very possible it was called due to an… Read more »
It was sexism and anyone trying to portray it has something he’d of said to a dude ref has an agenda.
I agree Cols, EG, and Phil… I thought there was a hint of sexism in his comment, “maybe this isn’t for her.” I lost a ton of respect for Chris Paul last night after his dirty play against Mozgov and his post-game comments.
I’d be embarrassed as a player that C. Paul represents the Players’ Association. He acted like a complete chump.
The Clippers were frustrated, getting blown out and lost their cool. Paul should have stopped after he said they need to do a better job keeping their composure. THAT would reflect a little self-awareness.
The fact that he is president of the players association makes what he said about Holtkamp worse, because his words carry more weight than just another player’s.
I missed the game but watched some of the fouls. You guys are right, the techs were probably all warranted. Never said they weren’t, and that doesn’t mean CP agrees, or that he’s right. Any player who openly criticizes the officiating is out of line and deserving of the fine/punishment they inevitably receive. That’s not what this is about. This is about people parsing his last comment and dissecting HIS USE OF A PRONOUN to determine from their high chairs that he is some despicable sexist. Look at the circumstances. He is lashing out at a rookie ref who called… Read more »
Great Podcast guys! Always good to hear you discuss all things Cavs, NBA, Micro-brews and music! My predictions would go… MVP: LBJ (no player means more to their team’s success than Bron) ROY: Wiggins* (the asterisk is because Jabari Parker went down and he would be the easy choice minus injury) COY: Budenholzer (because he’s done the most with the least… Blatt, Kerr and Kidd are in the conversation though) MIP: Draymond Green (never thought much of him and dude has gone to another level this year) FINALS: Cavs vs. Memphis (this would be a fun matchup that I think… Read more »

I hate that we have the same taste in music.
Didn’t even realize the new Decemberists and Belle and Sebastian albums were out yet. Thanks.
I can second the new Decemberists album… not my favorite of theirs, but a good listen
PRobably my favorite band that I’ve yet to see live.
Are you a fan of Parks and Rec? They played live on the season finale last year (along with Wilco). Only one song, but awesome to see them play…
Never got into it, though I’ve heard P&R is good. Wilco was probably my favorite band for a long time, but they’ve jumped the shark. Jeff Tweedy’s last album should have been categorized as “snooze rock.”
But Wilco’s last album, The Whole Love, was pretty good. They haven’t jumped the shark. It’s hard to stay as high as YHF and Ghost.
I think they have one more good album.
The band I’m worried about is The Hold Steady, their last album was extremely lackluster. Although it could’ve just been the way they mixed it with Finn’s vocals not being front and center.
Agree with Cols on both. I also think Wilco has one more great album in them, and I thought The Hold Steady has been downhill since Stay Positive and dropped off a cliff with Teeth Dreams. I was bummed when Franz Nicolay left the band…
2015 all-Nate team:
Delly
Andrew Wiggins
Rudy Gobert
Thaddeus Young
Andy (with Tristan Thompson as his injury replacement)
All time All Nate team:
Kevin McHale
Hakeem
Z
Paul Pierce
NBA Jam Spud Web
Sixth man: Trajan Langdon
Both of those teams would get annhilated by this year’s Cavs team.
Oh, except for NBA Jam Spud Webb.
Eh. That second would hold their own. Hakeem would have to learn to shoot threes though. Anyway, it’s not about who would win, it’s about who my favorites are.
I’d take that starting lineup of that second team over the starting lineup of the Cavs any day of the week. McHale would absolutely own Kevin Love. Hakeem would check LeBron, Pierce would own J.R., and Spud/K.I is a wash. And Z would be big enough/rangy enough to counter Mozzy.
Hakeem would check LeBron. And The cavs would run LeBron ISOs everytime and win easily.
My favorites are
LBJ
Kyrie
Love
MOzzy
JR Smith
With Shump, Thompson, and Ray Allen coming off the bench.
Modern rules or 90s rules, doesn’t matter. We’re talking three first ballot hall of famers, a great Center in Z, and one of the greatest sports stars in video game history.
But who’s on your All-Time team Cols?
Wait… let me take a stab…
2015 Leb
2009 Bron
2008 LBJ
2007 King
2010 He Who Must Not Be Named
Am I close?
Haha. That’s pretty great. But really, my all time team
Magic
Michael
LeBron
Shaq
Bird (he can play power forward, I guess. Or we could put Barkley in there)
Cols, is that your all-time BEST team or all-time FAV team? Or are they one in the same?
All-time Fav:
Delonte West
Michael
Leb
pre-Cavs Shawn Kemp
Andy/Tim Duncan
sub Kemo for Rondo on a positionless team. Love dem scrappy guards/wings!
Hm actually lets throw Chauncey Billups in instead of Rondo. Rondo still has work to do for me.
Love Delonte. When I ask myself whether League Pass is worth it, I think of Delonte’s personal 14-0 run against the Bucks that I wouldn’t have seen without it.
Cols… you get a shout out around the 49 minute mark during the Aaron Craft part of the conversation… ;)
They talk about Aaron Craft?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???? Why oh why oh why??????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t do it, thank EG for the liveblog, but I can’t listen to it if we are going to be talking about Aarong Craft and complaining about LeBron. Maybe next time.
It’s only a brief interlude in an attempt to make your head explode… ;)
And no complaining about LBJ… Mallory and Tom picked him as their MVP I think…
Wait. I feel I deserve credit for making Aaron Craft a topic on this blog! I feel slighted!
Aaron craft deserves his own tag for our posts.
What happened to Nate? He just dropped out during the all-Nate team selection… lol
“Blatt is not in the (Coach of the Year) discussion unless Cleveland runs off another 10 straight wins…” – Nate
Blatt won’t win, but he’s definitely in the discussion…
Of course he is,. Although Kerr or Budenholzer should win it. Of course the Cavs will win the title so there is that.
Great job Blatt is doing. When Lebron sat out to recover and the losses started to mount, the pressure was on to bring him back early. But Blatt let him sit until he was 100%. Good call.
He always has his players’ back.
Agreed U-Dog… Blatt seems to have figured out what role to play when he speaks to the media.
Don’t think it was just Lauren Holtkamp’s officiating since the Clips have been either #1 or #2 most T-ed up team in the NBA for each of the last four years… They are far an away the leader in the NBA this year…
Plus unless I’m mistaken all three officials got in on the T action last night.
You know that CP3 is out of line when he has the most offensive comment about a woman in a game where Chuck is doing the color commentary…
Glad you rectified that it was Iman and not JR who was busting out the mouth harp in the locker room…
Cols is on fire with his cockeyed drunken optimism.
Come on Nate! How can you argue with LBJ as MVP? Cavs win with him, don’t win without him. Definition of MVP…
Nope. That’s it, I’m not going to listen then. Not if Nate is arguing the LeBron isn’t the MVP. He probably still thinks the team would be better with Zeller, Bennett, and Wigging instead of LeBron and Love.
He goes with Harden, who would not have been a bad choice about 12 games ago…. ;)
I thought we were talking about the MVP of my fantasy team.
Don’t agree about the Houston comment…They aren’t one of the top two teams even in the WC… Dwight Howard’s knee is a lot worse than people realize…
Totally agree about the Clippers being exposed. Charles called them a soft team, and he’s completely right about that. They are also not mentally tough (which was on full display last night).
Chicago is going to be tougher once they get Dunleavy and McDermott back since their outside shooting is dismal right now… Still don’t think they’re better than the Cavs or Hawks though…
They are not. They aren’t even a threat. I said this before the season started and it’s still true. Their best player isn’t even as good as our 3rd best player. They are not good.
They don’t look good right now, but they are still a dangerous team. Probably not to the Cavs, but I could still see them upsetting the Hawks
Totally with Cols here. The Bulls aren’t the defensive juggernaut they have been in years past. Their improved offense still tops out as adequate hero ball played by guys with more past success than future. Derrick Rose is not Russel Westbrook and never will be.
Sure, they will be better with dunleavey back, but still not good enough.
Think you guys are selling them short… Bulls were 25-10 at one point and rolling… Just because they’ve looked bad lately, doesn’t mean they’re going to stay that way. On the surface, I wanted to write them off too, mainly because they were the sexy pick for many pundits in pre-season and I found it annoying. Don’t forget, they went into Oracle and beat the Warriors, and without Jimmy Butler. Granted they lost to the Lakers the next night, but they can still be dangerous, especially when Noah is fully back from injury and they get some outside shooting back… Read more »
You know I agree EG… I think the Bulls are the toughest opponent for the Cavs out of the East… although, like LAC, they seem to have lost it mentally.
It’s a marathon, not a sprint. The Bengals were the best team in the NFL in September.
Totally agree on the Memphis pick as the dark horse to come out of the WC… They are playing some terrific basketball right now
https://cavstheblog.com//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////?p=28494
Memphis had my favorite gambling odds in the preseason. 50-1?!? Next year I’ll have an article on NBA futures.
I regret not getting some of that action…
Kevin, Tom, and I picked them as the best bet in our preseason NBA betting lines on GotBuckets. Of course, I had Chris Bosh: MVP in that discussion too…
Great choice, I’d be hard-pressed not to pick them to come out the West this year.
Wow… that IS a pretty amazing stat about the Cavs top 12 lineups outscoring opponents by 20 points since LBJ came back from his two weeks off…
Wow! I love the KLove positivity on the podcast! Even Mallory’s girlfriend liked how he looked last night…
Are we sure this is the same podcast we are used to listening to? I have mental scars from some of the others. I’m scared.
I’m 25 minutes in and it’s all positive… no need to fear Cols
Barkley did have some awesome zingers last night…
My favorite was this exchange:
Reggie: “You can’t ask women about their age…”
Chuck: “Well you can ask the ugly ones…”
Haha. I heard that too. They were so bored, I was just hoping Barkley didn’t say anything to get himself fired!!!
Barkley is the best. They should fire McLeod, who is annoying, and have the commentators be Barkley/Carr. Or they should just fire McLeod and bring back Reghi.
Good point about Kyrie outplaying CP3, even though he was only 1-5… It’s amazing that by the time he hit that one shot, the Cavs were up by 32 already. Kyrie knew he didn’t need to score and played some great D on CP3 and distributed the ball beautifully…
yep yep yep. Kyrie has been great lately. YEEEEEEEPEPEPEPEPEPEPEPEPEPE
Did you have a seizure or something at the end of that post?
I think it’s safe to say that Kyrie has surpassed CP3 in the NBA point guard ranking. What a season Kyrie is having. He frustrated CP3 to the point of him losing composure.
I’m actually thrilled that Kyrie went 1-5. He didn’t try to take over a game that didn’t require him to. We’ve now seen him inside of a week carry the team on his back (Portland), and facilitate/distribute to an easy victory. That’s what you want out of your floor general; to be the guy the team needs at that particular time. That’s a mature PG mentality. Last night’s game was the closest I’ve seen to the team I hoped they would one day become- efficient and decisive on offense, active and testy on defense, with everyone on the floor making… Read more »
Good comment, Grover. +2 (one for each paragraph)
Also smart composed and athletic. Opportunistic yet patient. It was the best ive seen.
I think maybe I’ll listen to this one. I haven’t listed to the last few because of the Panic!!!!!! mindset that was going on and the weird love for Wiggins, a player who is much worse and plays a position where we are deep than the player we traded for (who is still young and good and at a position of need). Meanwhile Griffin has hit on seemingly everything he does and gets no credit, all we do is complain when LeBron runs an ISO even though it’s the best play in the NBA, etc. So maybe I’ll listen to… Read more »
It’s pretty positive Cols… I think you’re safe ;)
You should listen Tom gives you a shout out.
Go for it, Cols!!! Mallory might as well have been you in his glee.

Congrats on keeping it under an hour this time… ;)
See above. I have no control over it.
I just meant since the last one was like 100 minutes… lol, it’s always good to have more C:tPC
HAHA! True.
I never minded a long pod when I was stuck in LA traffic hell.
Certainly better than LA sports radio for the most part…
I’m excited about the Miami game, and then that Bulls game going on the road on the second night of a back-to-back before the all-star break will be tough. Then come late February, early March, we’ll see how good this Cavs team really is when their schedule gets a lot more difficult.
Tonight has trap game potential after getting so up for the Clips and playing so crappy late.
So none of this winning streak shows you how good this Cavs team really is? I don’t think we need to wait to late February or early March to figure this out. Watching this team over the past month has shown that they are really really really good. Easily the best in the East and most likely the best in the NBA. GSW worries me though.
I’d subscribe to the trap game mentality for tonight… if the Cavs had needed to play the starters in the fourth and play a much more strenuous game to beat the Clips. Yes, the bench looked terrible in the fourth, but I don’t think LBJ in his current mindset will allow this team to overlook the Pacers…
Let’s hope!
I don’t either. But we have to lose sometime. So if we lose we lose. No big deal. I’d much rather lose to a sucky team because we didn’t show up than a good team because we were outclassed.
Come on Cols! Don’t you want them to go 62-20? ;)
Haha. I do. I just know that we will lose again and I don’t want to deal with the negativity. We will lose. We will lose to an awful team and not play hard and it will mean nothing at all.
How worried should we be about the bench? 31-11 blowout by the Clips bench. I realize those guys aren’t in the regular rotation, but god they are just a bunch of flotsam and jetsam at this point. I’m hoping this is mitigated by the fact that they only sucked this bad when all of them played together, which compounded their problems, and that this will only ever happen in garbage time. Hopefully if one or more of them need to be plugged into the rotation for whatever reason, their play will be elevated by not playing with other bench decorations
We shouldn’t be worried at all. We have a pretty great rotation
Kyrie, Lebron, JR, Moz, Love
6. Shump
7. Thompson
8. Delly I guess, but he will be replaced by Allen
9. Marion
That’s a great 9 man rotation. Allen and Miller will be around to hit some key threes too.
Delly’s moving up in the Cols world!
HAHAHA… there is progress!
Nice. Though 1 suggestion, stop talking over each other ;)
God yes. Pretend you’re on a walkie talkie and say “over” when you’re done talking, then let the next guy talk.
Agree, let the other guy finish!
So who do we want to play in the Finals? I think we easily beat everyone but OKC and GSW. Those will be tough.
We want to play the Lakers.
Maybe I’ll be eating my words in the future, but OKC doesn’t scare me this year. I don’t see Durant being fully healthy, and I think we match up well with them.
I’m more afraid of GSW, SA, and Memphis.
I don’t think OKC is going to make the playoffs, and if they do they probably get destroyed by either GSW or Memphis. The Griz are playing really good basketball right now, so I could see them coming out of the WC, but GSW is so deep…
This is a good point. So maybe the only team to fear is GSW? I don’t think Memphis has a chance at beating us.
I think Memphis is a formidable opponent. Gasol and Randolph are two great post weapons, Mike Conley is an underrated PG. The Jeff Green pick up was a savvy one. The only question I have about them is their bench.
My personal opinion is that San Antonio, Dallas, Memphis, and LAC are the strongest teams. I know the LAC pick seems unreasonable now, but I’d argue playoff basketball is another animal altogether… though I am questioning myself after seeing them lose their cool against the Cavs last night.
If OKC makes the playoffs there coach will fail them like he does every year. I’m surprised he’s still an NBA coach. He’s awful.
How good is this team? How about easily the best in the East and most likely the best in the entire NBA.
No one can beat us in a series, no one.
I love the optimism and I agree that we are the team to beat in the East, despite Atlanta’s crazy January.
I like to think we’re the best in the NBA, but if we find ourselves in the NBA Finals with a team like San Antonio, there will be a lot of things that a few key players will need to learn to deal with in an environment they’ve never been in.
We have the talent and we’re well on our way. I’m excited to see what we’ll be by the end of the regular season!
We’d destroy San Antonio. They can’t match up with us at all. Plus there’s just about zero chance San Antonio makes it to the Finals. There aren’t too many teams that can make it there 3 years in a row.
I think it’s a little silly to count out SA.
I do not. They have as many flameouts early in the playoffs as they do deep runs. They’ve never even gone back to back. There’s no way they get through the West.
Agreed, Gordon. When Kawhi is fully re-integrated, we’ll see.
I’d agree that San Antonio shouldn’t be counted out. They’re the defending champs. I also think that they don’t care about seeding in a loaded Western Conference. Sure, you’d like to get home court, but not sure it matters as much when all of the teams are so strong… I think all of the WC playoff teams expect to get beat once at home during a series.
I think San Antonio are just trying to keep everyone healthy for a playoff run, and just make sure they get in the tourney.
I wasn’t buying San Antonio in the preseason. Three straight deep playoff runs through the West? I don’t think so. I did like Dallas and Memphis from a gambling perspective.
I agree that if they stay healthy and continue to jell they are the team to beat and in the East. We still haven’t seen them plateau.
Link isn’t working guys.
I assume you mean the iTunes link. Unfortunately, the Soundcloud account automatically updates the iTunes link, but it takes a bit, and I have no ability to force it. It looks like as of now, it’s still on the podcast from the 20th. I added a link to the soundcloud, in case the embedded one isn’t working for you.

It’s up now!
I think you guys need to try and get Barkley to do a podcast with you…
Man I’d love to interview people. Windy, Bollinger, Barkley, JVG, and Doris Burke. That’s my top 5.
