Podcast Episode 64: 2014-2015, Season of Wow

On the heels of a fantastic final day of regular season NBA play, we commissioned four of our finest voices to produce an epic podcast discussing the epic 82 game season we just witnessed. It’s been a long six months since October, and as Tom said, this was really three seasons in one, and now we’re on to our fourth. Mallory, Tom, David, and I look back on this season and preview the playoffs in this pod. We tackle the tough questions with our own brand of humor and and insight. Who will the Cavs challengers be? Who’s going to come out of the West? Will it be anyone but the Cavs or Hawks in the East? What were the season’s defining moments? Who does Mallory think the most “beautiful person on the planet” is? What beer have you been drinking lately? Oh, and there’s a big unveil towards the end. It’s, as always, an entertaining and informative listen — if we do say so ourselves.
You can listen above, or on SoundCloud or iTunes.
Enjoyed the podcast. Great to hear the chemistry stories. I can’t help to wonder in the last 20 mins you guys are clearly buzzed. LoL A lot of rambling and laughter
haha it was like 1:30 in the morning. I was delirious
Thanks for Mallory for the Courtney Barnett tip. Heard her briefly after the Grantland article, but went back and now I’m starting to get it. Normally I’m just Classical but love the songwriting.
Maybe she can become pals with Delly…
Loved the podcast. While on the subject of how great JR is, here is a real Pearl from Earl:

Yeah i read that tonight. very cool
This is a great read! Thanks gpho!
Love JR. Great link.
Great podcast… I laughed out loud at least a dozen times… Can’t wait for Tom to get a Mallory Tramp Stamp and to name his next child Cols. I have a felling his wife will make him get a vasectomy before this happens. Here’s my predictions – First round East: Cavs vs Celts | Cavs in 4 Bulls vs Bucks | Bulls in 6 Atlanta vs Nets | Atlanta in 4 Toronto vs Washington | Washington in 7 Semi’s Atlanta vs Washington | Atlanta in 6 Cavs vs Bulls | Cavs in 7 ECF: Cavs vs Atlanta | Cavs in… Read more »
Phish is also playing Blossom this summer on August 7th. They were pretty incredible the last time they played in 2012. I remember them playing Tweezer with teasing “Under Pressure” into “Ice Ice Baby” into “Walk Away”
Just watched the Grantland BBall Hour and both Jalen Rose and Zach Lowe pick the Cavs to sweep the Celtics. Bill Simmons thinks it’ll take 6 games for the Cavs. Jalen also says Love is going to play with Rondo in LA.
Awesome and epic podcast guys! I had to listen in pieces on my drive to work this morning and wasn’t able to finish it up until right after lunch. Some hysterical banter by all! I kind of agree with Mallory about the Warriors. I still think they’ll be in the WCF, but I also think it will be against the Spurs, who I think will beat GS. I think GS sweeps NO, Houston has a tougher time than expected with Dallas but wins, SA handles the Clips, and the Griz hammer the Blazers. GS survives a tough series with Memphis,… Read more »
Love to hear you guys.
To my ears you talk over each over a bit more than usual in this one. Distracting.
M. Smart is looking pretty good right now. I think he could end up being a borderline All Star in a couple of years. That said, I think the Celtics make it close a couple times but don’t win any games.
Yeah we did. Also, my audio sucked first half of the pod. I think I was too far from the Mic.
And like you mentioned… someone sounded like they were opening beer cans…
that’s almost always me.
I’m terrible about background noise
The year supply of Mallory henna trampstamps is one of my favorite podcast mentions ever…
Tom’s trip to the library…
LOL… he’s just fiddling around with Beethoven’s Fifth
Have the Bulls been in a series longer than five games since Lebron destroyed rose in 2010-2011? We have an easy path to the Hawks.
Cols, you’ve been right where I’ve been wrong pretty much all season, so far be it from me to question you. Go Cavs!
Mac –
The fact that Steph is a PG has nothing, in particular, to do with literal position. It does, though, have to do with relying on your smallest player to take a pounding from biggest men who have substantially more time to learn your subtleties.
Again, this reminds me a lot of the Bulls circa 2011. The common belief was that D-Rose would be unstoppable. But once Miami figured out a way to shut him down, the Bulls fell apart.
But the Bulls were built around a guy who relentlessly attacked the basket and couldn’t shoot. Steph might be the greatest 3-point shooter in league history. I’d argue he’s definitely the best off-the-dribble 3-point shooter in NBA history. We’ve literally never seen anything like Steph (and relatedly, Kyrie).
I guess. . . but Wade played the same role with the Heat in 2006 and they won the title, no? Parker in 2007?
I feel like you can always find the exception that proves the rule.
What “pounding” does Steph take? He doesn’t really have to drive that much, he can hit threes from 28 feet out and the Warriors have plenty of interior scorers.
I hope Mallory’s “hot take” is just him playing devil’s advocate for larfs because nothing – advanced metrics, history, game tape – supports his arguments that the Warriors are a little bit smoke-and-mirrors, built for the regular season, are overrated by playoff prognosticators, and so on. Even if he turns out to be right, I can’t give him any credit for his bold prediction because arguments like “they are complacent from blowing out teams, you can’t win in he playoffs like that!” aren’t really based on logic to me. Is that like how the home run in “Major League” was… Read more »
Mac – Totally fair to think I’m completely wrong. That being said, this team is pretty damn identical to the one that lost in the first round in 2013. The point being that when Steph doesn’t go bonkers, the Warriors have had a hard time beating teams with multiple threats over a long series. Do I think this means the Warriors aren’t good? No. Do I think the Warriors could win the NBA Championship? Yes. But I also think people are overstating their regular season because it was pretty spectacular on a nightly basis. Also, let’s not forget that a… Read more »
Since Tony Parker was Finals MVP in ’07. Chauncey won finals MVP in ’04…
TP was also aided by one of the greatest power forwards of all time (sorry, not ready to declare anyone on the Warriors “greatest” yet). Chauncey is valid, but that was also one of the most shocking finals victors of my lifetime.
Remember that 2010/2011 bulls team everyone thought was a juggernaut?
Don’t forget the rise of Draymond Green, Mallory. The Warriors are not the same team from last year. Barnes is improved; they’ve added Speights and Livingston, Curry and Thompson have stepped it up this year, and Bogut is healthy for the playoffs. And back to Green: Kerr putting Green, who will be a finalist for DPOY, in the starting lineup has allowed them to switch on everything and shut teams down. How can you argue against first on offense and defense? One other quibble, one that actually made me stop listening to the podcast: During your discussion of the Nets/Hawks… Read more »
Brian –
TOTALLY forgot the trade. Duh he was traded back to MN.
Brian. Honestly, we thought that was just Mallory being Mallory. Of course we were aware of Thad Young. I thought we corrected him, but maybe we just let it pass. I mean I’ve talked at length about Thad Young. Basically, the reason we DIDN’T talk about Thad Young was that Tom wouldn’t would have just mocked my infatuation with Thad Young. Hope you go back and listen to the rest of the podcast. Because, and I’m tooting our own horn here, the last half hour is among our funniest ever.
Mallory – I am never particularly fair. Unfortunately 15 years of law school + practice makes a person both unfair and convinced of their own rationality. My brain is a honeycomb of self-serving truthiness backed by argument that sound good and look bad if you squint too close, kind of like 2015 Madonna. Having said that I still don’t think it makes sense to say because that team has many of the same components as the 2013 Warriors, they are the 2013 Warriors. The 2015 Hawks have most of the same components as the 2014 Hawks, I don’t think that… Read more »
Great pod as always. Damn near all I listen to is podcasts, and you guys have the timing and structure down. Maybe weekly pods now that the playoffs are upon us? Was hoping that the Raptors would snag the three spot, but we’ll get to hear Noah talk about how our woman are ugly and The Q should be renamed Smokes for Less Area. I’m not worried about Derrick Rose, but the Bulls definitely scare me more than the Hawks. If Milsap’s shoulder is still bothering him in the next round, Brooklyn could be a tough out. It’s fun to… Read more »
Love to have you on one, Cory.
