Finals Game 5 Recap: Golden State 104, Cleveland 91 (or, Maybe Save Something for the Swim Back?)
2015-06-15In a fantastically contested game, the Cavs hung with the Warriors for 43 minutes, until two straight Andre Iguodala threes gave the Warriors a seven-point lead. Steph Curry then destroyed the Cavs’ chances with a dancing, playground style, three-pointer and then a layup to put the Dubs up ten. LeBron tried valiantly to bring the Cavs back with a 27-footer, followed by a successful Hack-guodala strategy, but Matthew Dellavedova missed a three that would have cut it to five at 1:39. Then, Steph Curry slung an ice dagger at the net from 29 feet, and routed the armies of the North Coast.
The other lousy bookend to this game, the first five minutes, looked like a plate full of baby puke as the Cavs had only a Delly junkball deuce and five turnovers on their tray. But Cleveland went small, relegating Timofey Mozgov to the bench, and ran with the Dubs till late in the fourth to the tune of 20 lead changes and 10 ties. Cleveland just turned the ball over five more times the rest of the game, but the 11 offensive rebounds surrendered to Golden State were the difference as much as Curry’s shooting.
LeBron James was the best player in the world for those 43 minutes, and only sat for 26 seconds at the end of the first quarter. He operated exclusively from the extended post on the left side and was backing down guys, setting up short dribble drives, and either setting up teammates or scoring in the paint. He even had a couple left wing triples. The King scored 40, grabbed 13 rebounds, and dished 11 dimes, and operated as the Cavs’ lone big for at least eight minutes. But, as the game got to crunch time, the weight of the ‘Land started to burden LeBron, who stopped rotating on defense and stopped rebounding. The Cavs refused to run at shooters, and despite dodging some bullets, Iguodala’s two crunch time triples hit vital organs. James and Co. were also too tired to box out, and the Warriors grabbed seven offensive boards in the final five minutes. Despite his late missteps, it’s hard to describe how good LeBron was tonight, except to say that Mr. James is the greatest point power forward in NBA history.
Stephen Curry finally had the breakout game all Cavs fans were dreading. Steph scored 37 and was 13-23 from the floor and 7-13 from three. Our boy Matty D did his best, but despite excellent defense, Curry worked the ball like a Duncan Butterfly in isolation and in the pick-and-roll, and used his dribble to hit some ridiculous threes that we all knew were coming eventually. We all just hoped they wouldn’t come till next season’s opener. Steph had his stat line despite Cleveland’s frequent trapping and double teaming, which led to more than a couple hockey assists for the MVP.
Matthew Dellavedova is my favorite player of all time because of his grit and heart, but he’s running on fumes at this point. He is too tired to push the ball or initiate the offense, and that makes the Cavs able to rely only on LeBron to get them into their “sets” (and I use that term loosely). Delly’s three point shooting has suffered too, and has abandoned him when the Cavs need it most. Delly was 2-9 from the floor, and 1-5 from three. I wish he was a more skilled player offensively, but to use my least favorite term, “it is what it is.” Matt’s fantastic as the Robin to Kyrie’s Batman, but he can’t stop the Joker by himself. I give him all the respect in the world, though. If I was Delly, and Curry was preening and strutting on me at the end of that game? I’d have clotheslined the cocky little bobble-headed cherub. Fortunately, Matt is more professional than I.
J.R. Smith gave the Cavs a much needed offensive boost in the first half with 14 points, mostly on downscreen curls and catch-and-shoot jumpers, but J.R. giveth and J.R. taketh away. He laid a goose egg in the second half, and ended up 5-15 for the game and 4-14 from behind the arc. I worry I might have figured out the book on J.R. He can be fantastic when you don’t need him to be fantastic, but if you do need him? Not so much. I don’t know if he puts too much pressure on himself, if he’s just a knucklehead, or what, but man does he do some stupid things. He had a really dumb flagrant foul running through a screen in the first quarter that was called more on reputation than anything, but it wasn’t helpful. He also just needs to go to the bucket sometimes, but refuses to do so, even when guys are draped all over him outside. He was lost on several rotations when the Cavs went super small, and gave up some bad layups.
Iman Shumpert is hurting. That much is clear. He shot 3-6 from three, and gave the Cavs 10 much needed points, but he missed three layups. He can’t finish at the rim, and even passed up a layup late to get the ball to a trailing Tristan. He also got smoked on a couple drives, and was responsible for some of the defensive breakdowns (a cringe-inducing Barbosa layup on an inbounds play was the worst of it). His worst offensive play of the game came in the second quarter, when he bricked a heat check in transition and it led to free throws for the Dubs. That was probably a four point swing. Despite that, Shump’s playing on pure will. He’s giving Cleveland what he has. If only they could clone him, and would that the clone were healthy.
Tristan Thompson was Cleveland’s second leading scorer with 19 points and 10 boards, and was flashing that nifty little hook around the basket on put backs and when the Cavs took advantage of his size on post-ups. Tristan even went 7-10 from the charity line, and seemed to be using his wrist more to shoot, but he had some big misses late. He chipped in two steals and two blocks too. TT got put on Steph Curry too many times on switches, but in his defense, he didn’t seem to do any worse on Curry than anyone else.
James Jones’ mere presence opens up the floor for LeBron. But Champ went 0-1 in 18 minutes, and only grabbed one rebound. He’s out of his depth, and consistently has to foul to play defense. The Cavs may have to give Marion some run. Mike Miller got off the pine, and hit a much needed three, but that was it for his 14 minutes (it would’ve been nice if Cleveland had run another play for him). The Cavs were in the positive during their minutes, though, so they dodged bullets. Blatt’s going to have to figure out some voodoo with them for Game 6.
Speaking of David Blatt, his rotations and game plan are going to come under fire. I’m torn over whether they should. The Cavs were exhausted late, because they don’t have anyone to spell LeBron, TT, or Delly, who played 45, 42, and 40 minutes respectively. But Blatt also refused to find any minutes for Mozgov, who had 9 minutes and 0 points after scoring a career high 28 in game four. At the very least, Mozgov needs to be playing, and be the center of the offense, for every single second that Curry isn’t on the floor. In addition, TT was -22 on the game. Moz could’ve spelled him for at least a few of those 42 minutes. The question with Blatt is: are the Cavs are doomed because their guys are exhausted, or because Blatt can’t trust the Cavs’ bench or big lineups? I have to think that the Cavs could use Marion’s rebounding (not to mention Mozgov’s).
But what choice do the Cavs have? How the hell are they going to run an offense without LeBron doing everything? Delly is gassed and apprehensive, Shumpert’s clearly hurt, and J.R. Smith is playing with his head up his bum sometimes. The Cavs generated points off of Smith’s ability to come off screens in the first half, but got nothing out of that in the second half. Where can Blatt get more offense? Maybe put Smith in the pick-and-roll with Moz and TT? The Cavs may have to do that. Also, they waited far too long to try Hack-guadala.
Ultimately, the Cavs have to play their bench more. If they get to five minutes left in Game 6, and LeBron’s exhausted, they’ve got no shot, unless they’re up by double digits. If they play their bench, they at least have a chance. I guess Blatt’s trying to do his best to lose the game in the fourth quarter and not the third. I can’t be too hard on him for that. No matter what he does, if the Cavs lose, he’ll get criticized.
Final Thoughts
This series is such a tough one because Steph is so impossible to stop when he gets hot. (Besides Hack-guadala) the only solution is to let the rest of the defense go three-on-four, and that is really tough when the Warriors go small. Blatt has chosen to go small to counter, but doesn’t have the bodies to sustain it (he clearly doesn’t trust Joe Harris). But the series is also a tough one for a different reason. The Cavs and Warriors seem to be bound by two different sets of rules.
The Warriors have returned to 1995, when hand-checking was legal, especially on LeBron and guys coming off screens, and the Cavs seem to be playing by rules that govern basketball in this millennia. I’ve seen Klay, Iggy, and Draymond all get away with holds on screens on offense, and holds on guys coming off screens on defense, not to mention the jersey grabbing, the over-the-back fouls, the pushes, and the moving screens. Draymond Green might get away with using his hands on screens and box-outs more than any other player in the league. Heck, he forearmed Delly in the back of the head and drove him to the floor last night during s rebound. (The alternative reading was that Delly was pulling him from the front, Olynyk style).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghPZiGqGuC4
The Warriors play right to the edge. Check out my favorite play by Curry, the “knee screen” on Shump when Klay Thompson hit a three to put the Dubs up, 85-80. Kerr has done a good job of coaching them that way, but I feel like I’m watching a series from the 90s half the time. Heck, the defining play of the series was a foul. You remember: the play when Klay went knee-to-knee with Kyrie and took him out for the series, and the foul wasn’t even called.
And I know it’s not Kosher to complain about the officiating. I’m sure I feel like every losing fan ever, but I don’t see Steph getting held and hand checked all over the place, or having to deal with all the contact LeBron has to at the rim. The Cavs seem to be playing cleaner. Maybe they need to play dirtier. Maybe that’s on Blatt. Of course, part of this is because the Cavs no longer have an attacking guard to force officials to make calls. Delly isn’t that guy. Furthermore, he allows Steph to rest on defense an order of magnitude more than Kyrie would have. For as much as we’ve all praised David Griffin, not pulling the trigger to get a third point guard is looking like a mistake right now.
But finally, it’s important to note that the Warriors also played a short rotation heavy minutes. Steph, Iggy, and Klay played 42, 42, and 40 respectively. How were they still frosty at the end, while the Cavs were gassed? Can the Dubs get away with it because they’re younger (aside from Iggy)? Is 42 minutes the max LeBron should be playing? Have the Cavs had tougher sets of series leading up to this? Is it just injuries? Should Cleveland be blood doping? Are the Warriors just mentally tougher? The Cavs were tired, and rebounding and defensive lapses cost them the game as much as the Warriors’ execution. The Cavs have to solve the exhaustion question if they want to have any shot at coming back in this series. I believe they will.
excellent work here nate. object analysis with appropriate humor. an aside is how can we all savor what is left but still not get caught up in what could have been. it seems when kyrie went down we were playing with house money. plusa rare shot at lebron getting a mvp in a loosing effort. of course we want the title more than the career footnote. the best part for me though is making memories with my boys reiterating some of the comment i read to them during games. the regulars (minus a few trolls) are like a fixture in… Read more »
You are right, it ain’t over until its over. CtB gang, don’t be giving up!
Cavs in seven!
I’m not even going to mention the refs but I will give my honest opinion on what I believe the Cavs should try next game. Blatt tried to match the Warriors small ball with his small line up and it kind of work for 3 quarters but if we look closely at the end of the game our shooters were overwhelmed by the Warriors length. JR and Shumpert couldn’t even get their shots over Thompson (6’7″) or Barnes (6’8″) and it was kind of the same situation with Shumpert. Delly was just giving the ball to LeBron in the post… Read more »
I’m not sure LeBron is too optimistic about leaving the small ball concept since the lane gets a bit crowded when Moz and TT are playing at the same time but to be honest the Warriors are making JR and Shumpert disappear at the end of each of the last 2 games.
The Cavs are right there with the game in reach in the middle of the fourth every game this series except game 4. Cavs have to figure out a way to find the energy to finish the game. They have to pressure Golden State’s shooters and rebound to hold their own in the last 3-4 minutes of the game.
The let Lebron finish the game pounding the ball into the lane. They just need to find the energy to do this at the end of these games.
Totally agree about Cavs getting worn down. It is hard to believe Blatt doesn’t do something about this by using his albeit small bench more. Can we be hurt more by a few minutes of so-so play from the bench or from our primary players just being worn down from overwork? Game 6 is a short rest game too. Even the dubs say they just need to keep wearing us down…looks like there’s no secret about what they think is the biggest Cavs weakness right now.
I think its more daunting than it seems. We seem to forget a little bit just how frightening this Dubs offense can be when a lock down defense isn’t on the court. If we play our bench and they can’t hold their own for 2 minutes a lead could jump from 4 points to 16 really quick and it turns into game 4. Down by 8 and in the blink of an eye its 22. If I was in their position, this is what would be staying my hand. Not saying its right or wrong, but looking for answers wherever… Read more »
LeBron James is getting no respect from the referees and it’s a total sham job. I’ve never had a problem with anyone on Golden State, but Draymond Green is a scummy player. He’s as dirty as they come, and the idiot can never believe that his slimy fists could possibly foul someone. The guy should have fouled out in the first half and it’s a total joke that he remained in the game. The guy could have easily had 8-10 fouls called on him. We need to make some alterations to our gameplan. Call me crazy, but after Mozgov destroyed… Read more »
And for the record, I love Delly. If not for him this series would have been over already. His defense has been fantastic. But he’s simply forced to do more than he’s capable of even when he’s 100% fresh. But chasing Curry all game while being naturally the most unathletic guy on the court, AND being asked to take 10+ shots a game? It’s just too much.
Hi Gordon, I totally agree with what you call an “absurd comment” but to be honest that’s the coaching staff fault. Because when LeBron pounds the ball for 20 seconds and doesn’t get the score well you just gave 20 seconds of rest to Curry, Klay etc.
Cavs need to get into their offense quicker and try to get some player movement and make the Warriors play defense as a team cause right now the only guy(s) who burns energy is whoever is defending LeBron and right they are doing it by committee.
Stop it. Lebron gets away with dislodging his opponent every time he drives to the hoop. He’s like a miniversion of Shaq in terms of the double standard applied to the offensive foul.
Lebron is putting up huge numbers, but this will go down as the biggest performance by a volume shooter in NBA finals history. He is shooting inefficiently, and so far his performance has waned when it becomes what Magic Johnson used to call “Winning Time.”
One way the officiating plays into the fatigue equation: If LeBron was getting some whistles when he drove, the Warriors wouldn’t be able to keep pounding on him. And he would be fresher in the 4th quarter.
Imagine if Curry was hitting the floor on every jumper — er, wait, he does. Imagine if Curry was actually getting hit by the Cavs on every jumper. He wouldn’t be as frisky and effective in the 4th.
Yeah, if I were a ref I wouldn’t want to call fouls for several different Warriors. Complain Complain Flop (repeat)
That’s a good point. Fouls do more than put points on the board. Hasn’t anybody complained to the league about all the uncalled fouls on LeBron? Announcers bring it up all the time! The league never seems to address officiating inconsistencies (aside from game 2 where they admitted to 4 mistakes in overtime).
Even if the Cavs lose the series, if Lebron does not get Finals MVP, I just may give up basketball. Curry is not even part of the conversation. If I had to choose 1 GSW and 1 CLE person for MVP, I’d go with Iggy and Lebron.
At this point it’s Lebron, and it’s not close.
Howdy. I moved to the bay area in ’85 and have 30 years as a dubs fan and an overriding 44 years as a cavs fan. I was at Game 5 yelling for Delly and embarrassing my son who is a huge dubs fan. Here are my observations – maybe they will help… – Dubs fans are pretty good, but there were a lot of empty seats and late arrivers. Tickets are super-expensive and the real fans are priced out – or sell out. Dunno if it’s like that at the Q, but it makes for a crowd that doesn’t… Read more »
These are some astute observations concerning the Cavs and great perspective from someone who knows the Warriors and can be objective about it. Thanks!
This might be the best comment I’ve ever read on here.
That was good.
Did any Dubs fans note the biased foul calls?
I need to revise my prediction. Cavs in 7. (Curry is spent thanks to Delly & the Cavs defense.)
I hope so… :) Winning Game 7 will be tough, but if we play to our full potential I think Cavs can do it. We need JR to go supernova and score like he did vs Atlanta.
Did anyone else notice in Game 4 when Iggy got fouled on the arm, he sarcastically started acting like it hurt sooooooooo bad, obviously taking a shot at LeBron, who, has the reputation as a exaggerator when it comes to injuries, and then coming back in and playing fine? I think it was the 3rd quarter, but regardless, I never heard anyone say anything about it, so i just let it go (but I’m sure that was what he was doing, bc he was laughing it up with some teammates, every once in a while flailing it around acting hurt,… Read more »
JVG and Jackson are horrible. Jax has an axe to grind and JVG has his nose up Jack’s rear end. Sad that ABC can’t find objective color analysts.
Sigh. The Cavs small ball lineup of Irving, James, Love, TT, and Smith would blow away this small Warriors lineup.
If we had Kyrie only, we’d have won Games 2, 3, 4, and 5.
If we had Love only, we’d have won Games 1, 2, 3, and 4.
It’s frustrating knowing that we would win in 4 or 5 games easily if we had one of these guys. Both? We would destroy them.
Here’s to winning Game 6 and winning and epic Game 7!
How are people criticizing Mozgov’s lack of minutes? If the Cavs won would this argument hold up? Guess who played 0, ZERO, NONE, NATTA minutes last night for the Warriors? ANDREW BOGUT. NONE. DNP. If the Cavs out rebound the Warriors, and Lebron continues to dominate the paint, and the Cavs win, then does Kerr get questioned for the ZERO, NONE minutes that Bogut played? Mozgov’s lack of minutes directly related to match ups. In order to slow the Warriors down, Cavs players have to have the lateral quickness to stay in front of them. Mozgov can’t guard Green every… Read more »
The most successful line up may actually have been when Lebron was the biggest player on the floor.
LeBron took 21 shots in the paint and had all of 9 free throws
Curry the baby took 7 shots in the paint and had 13 free throws.
Eh. This stat is wrong. Sorry.
They still had 13 more free throws than we did, with far fewer FG attempts in the paint. Even accounting for hack-guadala at the end of the game, that just doesn’t make sense.
Thanks for the recap. I was surprised at the second half – the cavs seemed to lack the fire that we’re used to seeing. I wasn’t surprised when Game 4 they just ran out of gas, but I didn’t think that would happen in Game 5 with the extra day. I hope Delly is back to drinking coffee, because he needs it. He’s got to make curry uncomfortable before he gets the ball. The Cavs didn’t seem like they were desperate, physical, and determined as they have before. Are they mentally exhausted as well? I don’t know, but I hope… Read more »
In the earlier series, the anchor of the Cavs toughness on D was Shump. He has just not had that kind of impact in this series. Presumably, its the injuries.
It is puzzling why Blatt hasn’t used Shawn Marion. We are undermanned, overworked and dying for help from our bench. Marion has a very good reputation as a defender, able to guard multiple positions, and has won a championship (beat Lebron in a finals matchup with Dallas).
He may not offer much offensively, but he’s an experienced, talented and athletic resource. It is reasonable to say that if we lose the series being tired will have had something to do with it and Blatt will be…and should be…asked about his decision to not play Marion.
Great recap Nate…and to follow up on your point:
“The question with Blatt is: are the Cavs are doomed because their guys are exhausted, or because Blatt can’t trust the Cavs’ bench or big lineups? I have to think that the Cavs could use Marion’s rebounding (not to mention Mozgov’s).”
Perhaps the answer is BOTH. The Cavs are exhausted and it’s because Blatt has not trusted his bench. Not playing Marion at all under these circumstances is hard to justify (didn’t he have two steals in like 30 secs in this year’s playoffs?).
All I can figure is that the Matrix is just done. The Dallas/Miami matchup was four years ago, and he just doesn’t have the quickness to stay with anyone (plus, there was an early report that he’s been struggling with a calf injury or something also).
If this is not the case, then not sure why Blatt wouldn’t use him, even for a few minutes to give LBJ a rest.
EG, I agree. Also, he’s going to retire after this year, so he should have some desire to make his last game(s) meaningful. If Marion’s not injured then Blatt will have, as Ricky Ricardo might say, some “splainin'” to do.
Yeah, EG looks like a shell of himself every time he gets minutes. I want no part of him on the floor unless its dire. With Miller getting some minutes, I think we now have 8 guys in the rotation, which is enough.
LOL! I meanst SM (Shawn Marion) not EG.
To be fair, I don’t want EG on the court, either, so your point still stands. :D
Hey now… I’m pretty good from deep (uncontested)… ;)
Yeah, you and my cousin Moon Dog.
I’m a lifelong Cavs fan who lives in the heart of Warriors land. I’ve watched every single Warriors game this year(that’s what is on our cable). I can’t afford tickets to see my Cavs in the finals because of the very rich Warriors fans who pay whatever it takes. I read this blog every day and enjoy all the comments and passion of my fellow fans. Since I watch every game with all my friends who are Warriors fans, I felt compelled to finally share a comment. We(my Dubs friends and I) all objectively agree that this is the most… Read more »
Way to stay strong in enemy territory, berkleyjaq! I will admit that it’s been fun to watch GS throughout the season, but I’ve had a complete change of heart in the playoffs (not just in the Finals against the Cavs). The amount of ego, arrogance, entitlement and complaining I’ve seen from them has made me dislike their brand intensely. Steph is a terrific player, and Iguodala has raised his level of play immensely this series. However, Green is extremely over-rated, Bogut has been marginalized, Klay is hit and miss and Barnes has been predominantly a no-show. I don’t see them… Read more »
But they will tear through the weak West
Ha HA Weak West. Like it. Western Conference teams not that physical compared to the East.
@MySportsLegion: According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Joel Embiid could reportedly miss all of next season.
I heard that Hinkie has the Globetrotters scheduled once per month during the season just to keep Philly fans interested…
Good writeup. I think the first 5 minutes were a hot mess because the Cavs were trying something new. Whatever it was failed miserably, so they scrapped it, benched Mozzy and went small. I don’t know if this is what happened but I think it makes sense. I think in Game 4 when GS inserted Igoudala into the starting lineup and if they had started out as a hot mess, they would have scrapped it instantly too. Its a panic move when it fails and genius when it works. The officiating was worse than I ever seen, amplified by that… Read more »
We’ve reached that unfortunate point in a Cleveland playoff run where fans are moping and complaining about the team and the “curse.” I really wish people would be more objective. This team has outperformed in the face of key injuries. It’s not coaching or star players failing in the clutch. They’re undermanned, exhausted and caught unlucky breaks. It’s further proof of just how difficult it is to win a championship. I am proud of the team and thank CTB and all the commenters for all the great content and discussion this past year and years prior. Whatever happens next, I’m… Read more »
Its human nature to try and put a “blame” to a unlucky situation. So although I try to restrain myself from doing so, it kinda always pops up. As far as the crazy ride we have had up to this point, I’m nothing but proud of what we have accomplished, specially in the playoffs with the injuries. I still remember thinking and wishing that someway, somehow, Christian Eyenga could morph himself into a quarter of what Lebron (actually Kobe cause I didnt like Lebron much those days) was and make a splash for the team and the city. Man was… Read more »
Steph Curry may have been the MVP but he is far from ever being better than LeBron. Replace Curry with LeBron and the CAVS can’t get past the Bulls.
Regardless of what happens this has been an incredible year. I cannot believe they got this far after losing two of their top three guys. GS wouldn’t had gotten out of the second round if they lost 3 starters. Probably not even the first round. Their “lucky” run will end this year! And Draymond Green is far from a max player IMO. Put him on the Wolves and the Wolves still are the worst team in the league.
Suppose Game 6 is tight heading into the fourth quarter, should David Blatt should steal a page from Popovich’s book and start intentionally fouling Andre Iguodala?
In theory, such a strategy could (1) disrupt Golden State’s offensive flow, (2) keep the ball out of Curry’s hands, (3) give Lebron and the others a breather, and (4) might (but not likely) create doubts about having Iggy out there.
We’ve already seen it happen numerous times in these playoffs (especially against the Clippers), albeit with mixed results. What do you guys think?
Well, the Cavs do have the four potential hack-a-toons sitting at the end of the bench.
Regarding the hack-an-iggy, I can’t believe we haven’t done it the past 2 games. Why not use it? Its perfectly legal. Put in your bench warmers and have them a go at it. As far as last night, with JR not hitting shots in the second half, we needed to try a different approach. Either bring Moz in and run the offense via LeBron and him, or bring in Marion in the third, to see what he has to offer. Its unfortunate cause if we were healthy, it would be a whole different thing but we can’t keep playing guys… Read more »
The problem is that you have to get in the penalty first.
Oh of course this wouldn’t even cross my mind of we had a full or even 75% squad, but with not much else than Lebron, I don’t see why you wouldn’t have it as a back up plan.
And if I were coach, I would get in “the penalty” by inserting some of the reserves for the sole purpose of hacking Iggy, and I mean Perkins-style hacking. We saw what the Cavs did to Jae Crowder when he was too bothersome on defense against Lebron in that Celtics series.
I think several hard screens and some hard fouls, which could lead to several missed free-throws, could shake Iggy’s confidence and limit his effectiveness moving forward.
It’s not pretty basketball but we’re in a situation that calls for desperate measures. I know Pop wouldn’t hesitate.
How many times in these Finals has a close game been defined by this sequence late in the 4th quarter: Cavs down a couple possessions, missed three, long rebound, Golden State semi-fastbreak, wide open three, Cavs desperation three, miss, Golden State heat check, game out of reach. For all the things going against us this series, the #1 thing that has hurt us in my eyes is that there is not ONE guy capable of hitting 3’s late in the 4th quarter. Occasionally LeBron. But otherwise, when the game is at its tipping point and every possession is magnified, there… Read more »
Thomas Pestak @tompestak
Surprised Curry hadn’t suffered exhaustion sooner, working really hard against Norris Cole, Beno Udrih, Jason Terry, and Matthew Dellavedova
That is really funny! Only a crack CtB journalist like Tom Pestak has that kind of insight. Can’t rely on the national media to pick up on things like that.
In the end all the analysis boils down to the fact that the Warriors are healthy and the Cavs are not.
A healthy Cavs team sweeps this Warriors team. This unhealthy Cavs team sweeps the Warriors minus 2 of their best three players.
THat’s a bout it.
LeBron has been unreal in this series
I agree. And there is still a 20% chance that this unhealthy Cavs beats this healthy Warriors team in 7. It would be oh so sweet.
I love the small-ball decision for 3 quarters… but why you don’t at least TRY to bring a fresh-legged Mozilla in for some quality minutes in the 4Q is beyond me.
Great, great recap Nate. But I don’t think that Blatts decision to bench Mozgov was as bad as it seemed. The Dubs were throwing double teams at him and he didn’t know how to pass out and respond. Also, he’s not a primary offensive player that you can expect him to score in post-ups against smaller guys. When we took him off the floor, the game stayed close. But I do agree that his presence would have helped with rim protection and limiting their offensive boards that killed us. I really got frustrated with trapping and sending 2 guys the… Read more »
I just wish one time we would give Curry a hard foul when he drives to the basket. Knocking that hanging mouthpiece out would be a good thing too. For someone who hasn’t won anything yet, as others have said, Curry does a lot of preening. Wonder what some old school hall of famers like Magic, Bird etc think of that? The Spurs never had had to preen despite their multiple championships. If we can’t pull this series out, I sure hope we face the Warriors, assuming they make it again, next year with our full roster.
What’s even worse is that he decides he can now preen after doing it for one game. He played below his standards for the first 4 games and Delly shut him down. You can’t dance and put on those stupid little faces against a Cavs team that you are expected to beat. He definitely needs a hard foul or hopefully return the Warriors favor and crush him with an illegal screen
Yeah, that shushing the crowd gesture from Klay gets me pissed every time I think about it.
The Splish Brothers are super-talented but really, really easy to dislike.
PERK TIME.
Knowing Cleveland luck, we’d get a flagrant 2 called on whoever fouled him and we’d be screwed. But I agree, Curry is a little prissy and gets away with it because he’s NBA’s golden boy right now. Meanwhile back in LeBron camp, the man gets pummeled and not a single call.
Some good signs:
– Mike Miller is now giving us decent minutes. I feel like we have a legitimate 8 man rotation now. Which is key.
– The team didn’t seem exhausted by the end last night. It was basically just Curry going nuts.
– We have an effective gameplan. Every game has been close except for G4 when we were exhuasted.
– If we can force G7, it will be interesting to see how Warriors respond. If Steph goes nuts in a Game 7 and we lose, I tip my cap to a great player.
The Cavs gave up seven offensive rebounds in the final five minutes. They were either exhausted or they quit trying.
That is a good point. Watching it, it looked more like bad luck than lack of effort. But maybe I am just telling myself that.
Cathartic recap, Nate. I had to miss the game due to prior commitment, so was only able to watch on DVR and read through the thread. Cavs fought hard and it was a tough loss. Definitely think the officials need to be evaluated, not just after this game, but after this entire post-season. Shocking the amount of missed calls, phantom calls and poor decisions (not just on Cavs, but all teams). Never seen a more inconsistent and unbalanced display than this year’s playoffs. However, the refs are only a factor if other elements are present. The simple truth is that… Read more »
I agree EG with your analysis of the Cavs’ human resources under playoff pressure. Dead wood sitting on the wood.
The Cavs do not have a small rotation equal to that of the Dubs, even were Imam at 100%.
But, their large rotations are superior.
What to do?
It does not at all follow that a ten point loss means the officials did not cause it. First of all, they probably did give the GSW at least 12 points. But even if they only given them 6, the Cavs would have been playing with the lead at the four minute mark, which makes a huge difference. Then LBJ could have just gone bulldozer every play. That works for maintaining a lead, not catching up when you need some threes.
All i can say is. somehow win game 6 and game 7 is up for grabs. Plus we get a nice 3 say break
What can they do? Missing two of their best players means LeBron and company have to play to exhaustion. They are doing a good job of it. But last night was one of the wierdest reffed games I’ve ever seen. Tons of contact but only the Warriors were getting the calls. Then Steph went nutso. We complain when LeBron doesn’t go tot he hoop on every possession. But last night was a reminder why. He gets killed every drive and very rarely does he get the calls. It’s odd and it sucks for us. We need one more guy. Just… Read more »
This officiating has been an absolute joke. Lebron isn’t getting the superstar calls that he’s been getting his whole career. It’s been 51 freaking years, can we at least get a fairly called game?
We’re not even talking about superstar calls. Nate’s right; Lebron is getting pulled, hacked, and checker on every drive and not getting calls. Meanwhile, Leandro Barbosa is getting and-1 calls when Mozzie goes completely vertical. Superstar calls are one thing (see Harden, james) but we aren’t even getting our fair shake of correct calls. But complaining about the officiating isn’t going to change anything. Hopefully, the cavs will bring it to the leagues attention but the only thing we can do now is hope everyone digs deeper and finds enough offense to close out a game. We’ve been right there… Read more »
Cavs seem gassed save TT and Moz(who got little run). Marion must have zero left if Blatt isn’t trusting him to play even 5 minutes. I thought the injection of Miller did spark some moments with loose balls and steals but the Cavs didn’t do much with those opportunities. It’s too late to change anything. The Cavs have to live and die with the way they are playing now. Hopefully what we see is an explosion from the Cavs in the first half of game 6 at a rockin Q that puts GSW on their heels and makes them press.… Read more »
Great recap, Nate – you’ve got a turn of phrase that captures each pivotal moment perfectly.
The only phrase I would have suggested for inclusion would be the following Australian one, which Delly could easily deploy had he the morals of Kelly Olynyk: “Shirt-front”.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Shirtfront
I thought LeBron should’ve gotten at least another two minutes of game time rest at the beginning of the fourth quarter, maybe even through a full timeout. Pretty much knew he was going to run out of gas at the end of game again. I don’t know if that’s on Blatt or LeBron being stubborn. It seems like LeBron decides when he goes back in.
Curry didn’t come back until there were 9 minutes left in the game, the luxury that the Warriors have. None of the Warriors are playing large minutes at both ends like LeBron is.
Lebron did that in the regular season when we had more players. He would sit before the end of 1st and 3rd periods and stay till 2-4 minutes had come by in the 2nd and 4th. Obviously it also depended on who they were playing and what the score was, but that was the general pattern. As our team got more and more depleted and being its the finals, we can’t do a thing w/o LBJ on the floor. Thats a combination of how great he is but also the fact that Blatt never developed a proper rotation or a… Read more »
I can think of 2 to LeBron off the top of my head the last two games, and 2 to TT that TT finished or got fouled. They need to add a 3rd action on those pick and rolls so it’s not Delly stringing out and shooting a floater or just floating an Oop up there.
Not figuring out a way to play a productive scorer AND Rebounder like Mosgov killed us. The bench scorers between the 2 teams were identical at 17 pts. We got no pts from Jones and we didn’t slow Curry down in the 4th. Games are being won in the 4th. While Lebron is working his ass off in the 3rd, you got Curry sipping wine coolers resting up to go Nova in the 4th . Mosgovs offense is key in this series. Cavs will certainly lose again if he only plays 9 mins. Blatt needs to tap into some genius… Read more »
The problem is they started doubling Mozgov and Mozgov was completely lost in that situation having never faced a double before. I’m not sure if we can coach him on it in 1 day of rest unfortunately. That’s why Mozgov got the hook so fast; he didn’t have the necessary skills to handle the defensive change on him.
Totally comprehend the double team concept here. The harsh reality is What Other Options Do Cavs Have when they cant get the offense from anyone else?. Delly, Miller, Jones, Shump & Jr aren’t giving team what they need. Cavs KNOW they can get pts from Mozzie. There HAS got to be a genius balance in there some where. Mozzie shouldn’t be tired with only playing 9 mins. Can we hope Green or Iggy gets tired? Idk
The Cavs were up 1 with 6 minutes left, and down 2 with the ball with 4 minutes left. That was a big improvement over G4, when Moz had 28 and 10. I thought Blatt showed big balls to bench Mozzy, and I thought it was clearly a better approach against the Ws small lineup. I thought he could have mixed Mozzy in a bit more to give TT rest, but I don’t understand the argument that we would have done better by playing more Mozzy and trying to get offense through him. We did that in G4, and that… Read more »
I agree wit Hot Sauce as usual
Maybe today or tomorrow morning they will work with Mozgov and the team to have some options, a few set plays or outlets, in the event that the Warriors double him again as expected. Will be interesting to see if Blatt starts Mozgov, or goes straight to the small lineup. But if Mozgov spent a few hours working on dealing with double teams, that could potentially really fluster or surprise the Warriors (a few easy dropoffs for dunks or threes).
My overall impression of this game is that the Dubs played well and deserve credit. I was hoping that a fresh Moz would be in there in the 4th to pound it in against a tired team, but it was not to be. I also wish Delly would get a little more rest. Joe Harris can foul Iggy as well as anyone. Shumpert just hasn’t been the defensive force in this series, partly because of how the Dubs play and presumably because of the groin and shoulder. It’s a disappointing loss, for sure. BUT. They can still do this. I’ve… Read more »
Did anyone else notice on the replay of that 8 second violation that the clock started before anyone had possession? Don’t have DVR, but I’m pretty sure the ball was still being bobbled when the shot clock started the count…
Good recap. Tough Loss. Not sure what to say…
Yeah, that was the quickest 24-second start I’ve ever seen.
Warriors have done this before against other playoff teams. They continue to get away with it.
Yah, I was going to mention this. It was actually 6 seconds. The shot clock went to 24 too quickly, Cavs actually got possession at 22 and got whistled at 16, I don’t understand why on a play like that, they can’t go to the replay. It was a bogus call.
Killer recap Nate. Officiating is so tough right now bc the Cavs margin for error is so small. That bail out call for Barbosa was too much.
The Cavs still played their game. They’ve been in every game through 3 quarters.
Only problem, basketball have 4 quarters and we are mainly only competitive in 3 of them. In this series it seems like basically if the game is close heading into the 4th we loose because we can’t get over the hump and get the lead and win. Also not closing quarters are not.
