Cavs Sign Another Blue Devil PG… Quinn Cook
2015-08-17As summer, and the wait for TT and JR to sign, drags on, the Cavs are still making moves to bolster their training camp squad, and perhaps their roster. After playing for them in the NBA Summer League, former Duke guard Quinn Cook (22) has reportedly signed with the Cavs.

Cook, a 6’2 PG, was a big part of the Blue Devils’ championship run last year, starting all 39 games while averaging 16 points on 46% shooting, and playing solid perimeter defense. Here are all the details on his impressive four year Duke career.
In high school, Cook followed in the footsteps of Oak Hill Academy’s great tradition of point guards, which includes William Avery, Steve Blake, Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, Rajon Rondo, Nolan Smith, Rod Strickland and Marcus Williams. During his senior season at Oak Hill, he led the Warriors to a 31-4 record, averaging 19.1 ppg, 10.9 apg and 2.5 steals.
Cook was a member of the 2009 USA Basketball Men’s Developmental U16 National Team that posted a 5-0 mark, captured the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship gold medal and qualified the U.S. for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship. He started all five games and averaged 15.6 ppg., 3.6 rpg. and a team-high 5.0 apg. He was also a member of the 2010 USA U17 World Championship Team that posted a perfect 8-0 record and captured the gold medal, Cook started all eight games and averaged 7.5 ppg and 3.0 rpg., while dishing out a tournament-leading 7.4 apg.
Cook was named to the 2011 USA Basketball Junior National Select Team which competed against a World Select Team in the annual Nike Hoop Summit. Cook had 12 points and 3 assists in 16 minutes, and Team USA went on to beat the World Select Team 92-80.
Most recently, Cook averaged 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists in nine Summer League games with the Thunder and the Cavs.
He also once played Tony Romo one-on-one…
Like his fellow signee, Jared Cunningham, Cook’s contract is likely non-guaranteed, and he’ll be more of a training camp player/probable starting PG for the Canton Charge.
However, if he does stick… we will have to start calling him “The Mighty Quinn.”
Welcome to the team, Quinn!
Looks like Jonas V is going to sign a pretty reasonable contract extension… Wasn’t that long ago that many people valued JV well above TT… how things change…
It seems like JV is criminally under-utilized in Toronto… they seem to like jacking up jumpers rather than dumping it down low to JV every offensive possession and play off him.
Secondly, doesn’t this contract help the Cavs’ cause for signing TT to a more reasonable (i.e. not max) contract?
True, but one wonders what TT’s and Jonas’s respective contract situations would be if TT played in Toronoto last year and Jonas played with Lebron last year.
No doubt. LBJ is the ultimate catalyst…
So, if this early ESPN Forecast bears out, Cavs would play Celtics round 1, probably Heat in round two, and the Bulls in round three…
This version is one of my favorites… mostly because I’m a huge Paul Weller fan…
It will be a TRAVESTY, an INJUSTICE if the PA guy doesn’t play this song for Cook’s baskets should he make the team! I think the good karma from this song alone is going to increase his chances to make the team!!!
Ha! We should definitely do a piece on what the PA music should be for each Cav…
YES!!! HAHAHAHA!!! Already nailed this one EG!
I’m a huge Dylan fan and this is my favorite version of the Mighty Quinn, from an underrated Denzel Washington flick.
Denzel was, and still is, The Man
All time great song. Check out the Taj Mahol version with the Pointer Sisters and the Howard Johnson horns. A dobro, a trombone, four tubas, and sister harmony is something you don’t see a lot.
That was the “Cakewalk into town” part I was talking about.
According to Chris Haynes, it’s only a matter of time until Kaun signs with the Cavs. Apparently Kaun was in town today doing some house hunting.
A little small for my taste as a two guard. But I’ve seen more small two guards who excel as 3D players in the last few years than I have for a while (Boston bought stock in the concept). Hopefully he can add some competition to camp.
Definitely small for a 2 guard. If he makes the team, it’ll be because he shoots the light out of the arena. Already my favorite rookie pick up for the Cavs!
EG.. you forgot to mention the most important aspect of Quinn Cook’s game: his 3pt shooting! He’s a career 37.5% 3pt shooter, shooting 39% twice and making 102 3pt baskets this past season. He’s got a good shooting stroke, and mainly shot catch and shoot 3s during his career at Duke. He’s also developed into a high-character guy. He had trouble during his time @ Duke, and Coach K almost kicked him off the team. The lightbulb went off and Cook became a team-first guy leading the freshman class this year to a national championship. I know I’m a Duke… Read more »
Yeah 4 years at Duke and helping lead a team to a national title speaks a lot about his mental makeup. Can never have too many guards who can shoot 3’s and defend. I hope he sticks around in Canton if he doesn’t make the team, could be a nice guy to call up as the Cavs’ roster outside the Big Three evolves over time.
I agree… I’m happy the Cavs are focusing on picking up guys who can shoot!
Good point CLF! I missed that important stat in my haste…
HAHA… I’m just Duke-obsessed EG! Can’t tell you how excited I was to see this article posted today when I woke up! Love your positive takes! Big ups!
Any morning that comes with Cavs news, no matter how minute, is a good one… ;)
Amen to that!!!
BTW, the highlight video you posted pretty much said it all about Cook anyway HAHAHAHA!!!
Yeah, but you need guys for practice, so why not grab some good, young, athletic guys who can defend a little? Should only serve to help in training camp and if they show anything, they’ll get stashed in Canton…
I would like to have a couple athletic guards who can stick like glue to Curry and Thompson. Run them in and out in shifts. If the Cavs had two Dellys last year, they would have won the finals easy.
2 guys who shot like crap in the Finals? 2 guys who basically were unplayable after game 3 because they were out of shape? No thank-you.
Biggest playoff impact of any second year player in the NBA last year, but ok…
You mean the guy who played 81 minutes in two games after averaging 20 per game during the rest of the year? There’s a vast difference between out of shape and pushed beyond limits of exhaustion and dehydration…
One guy who is unplayable after game three due to exhaustion, the second guy to replace him in winning games 4 and 5, of course!
If the Cavs had two Dellys, Cols would lose his mind… Or at least start following the Nuggets or something…
I would become substance dependent.
Wait… isn’t that already the case? ;)
He’s probably better than Delly right now. But Delly has the experience advantage. Another guy who will not make the team.
Better than Delly how? Why would he not make the team over Delly if that’s the case?
Good write-up. Never know when you’ll need that 4th PG.
WOW EVIL YOU ARE ” TAKING ME ON A TRIP TO THE PAST ” WITH THE MIGHTY QUINNN—-THANK YOU !!!
This is a great version. One of those Dylan songs that was better when other people did it. Greatest songwriter the world’s ever seen.
I put a video up of another fun version below.
