Recap: Cavs 117, Knicks 88 (Or, I Can Get Used To This)
2016-10-26The Cavs collected their rings and hoisted their championship banner with poise. They didn’t let their excitement change anything they did. They defended hard holding the Knicks to just 36.8% from the field. They made sure they moved the ball getting 31 assists. And, even though it was a 29 point win, LeBron James and Kyrie Irving made it entertaining by generating at least twenty vines.
The King kept whipping cross court passes and running for easy transition buckets on his way to a triple-double. By halftime, he had 12 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds. By the time he checked out in the fourth quarter, he had 19 points on 9-14 shooting to go with 14 dimes and 11 rebounds.
Kyrie had an almost equally impressive night. He scored ten on 4-12 in the first half, but in the third quarter, he showed he’s the man of 1000 scoring maneuvers. He put up 19 points hitting 3-4 from deep. He hit jumpers over Kristaps Porzingis and even spun around him for a called it bank shot from just inside the 3-line. Whatever Irving wanted to do, Irving did.
The Cavs started the first quarter a little slow. Irving let Derrick Rose get to the rim in a curl motion for a layup immediately. Kevin Love then missed a hook shot, despite catching the ball deep in the post. LeBron scored the first points for the Cavs with a running floater. The Knicks hung in on the offensive end with Carmelo hitting tough shot after tough shot getting five baskets, just two of which were assisted on. The Knicks also pounded the offensive glass getting five offensive boards. Porzingis got four easy points off of them. The Cavs decided to push the pace the entire time. If they could get down the court and find a cross match, they were attacking it. The one instance Melo was on Kyrie, LeBron hit him right away. Kyrie then pump faked before driving in a little to drop a 15 footer.

LeBron essentially orchestrated everything netting five assists and countless other hockey assists. One of his dimes came off an offensive board. On that one, he found Kevin Love in the corner before Love pump faked past Porzingis on his way to the rim for a 3-point play. The Cavs ended up taking ten threes and hitting just two, one of which was the last shot of the quarter. All of them were open though. After one, Cleveland led 18–28.
In the second quarter, the Cavs rolled out Channing Frye, James, Irving, Mike Dunleavy, and Richard Jefferson. RJ started off on a good note getting LBJ a dunk after a very long play sequence featuring at least five passes. Most of the offense in the quarter seemed to be the King dunking. For his second throw down, he had a football esque sprint between two defenders trying to tackle him after a steal by RJ. He finished with ease.
https://vine.co/v/5d60Oj3M7lZ
His third dunk came about a minute later when Iman Shumpert shumped the ball away from Carmelo in the paint. James recovered the stripped ball and pushed it up court. Then he tossed it to Irving running near the sideline. Ky finished the play when he threw the ball up about 16 feet into the air. It arced the perfect amount for the King to catch it while it was coming down for an extra powerful slam.
https://vine.co/v/5d6Erih0YV3
The Cavs went up by 12 after that dunk, but the Knicks came roaring back. They went on a 15-5 run in the middle minutes. Irving got the only points during that dark time, finding the basket for a layup and hitting a 3-pointer off the dribble. The Cavs struggled in the quarter because they just couldn’t hit 3s going 2-11 and because they turned the ball over seven times. They entered the locker room up just three, 48-45.
The third quarter started out with Kevin Love getting called for a charge after getting an offensive board. Love redeemed himself a possession later tipping in an Irving miss. He then got a steal, which he tossed to LeBron who drew a foul at the rim for two freebies. The quarter was starting to feel a little special. LeBron then continued his dunk fest.
His first throw down came when he caught the ball near the baseline with his back to the basket. He kept his dribble going and whipped the ball to J.R. Smith in the corner. J.R. then dribbled to the rack and drew help before passing back to the King who dunked. The King had one dribble and two full steps of power for the slam. Joakim Noah clearly wanted no part of the poster play. He contested from just far enough away that he couldn’t be caught in a photo but also couldn’t be called out for not playing defense.
https://vine.co/v/5dgZlXAj0jV
James also got a dunk off a Kyrie steal. Speaking of Kyrie, he had 19 points in the quarter. He hit 8-10 shots. Irving was basically unstoppable. He hit three( two assisted) 3s. On one 3 he looked at Porzingis before jab stepping him into oblivion and shooting a high shot over him.
Irving even drew a foul on the Zinger when he set a moving screen.
Irving had so many highlight worthy plays in the quarter that if I were to show all the vines on here, my computer would crash. It’s just a Chromebook, but usually it can handle up to ten media items in a post. I’ll only show my two favorite plays here. The first one is Irving showing Brandon Jennings what the dream shake is. Jennings must have been especially salty considering he opted to go overseas and play basketball before entering the draft instead of playing one year at college. The dude doesn’t like learning.
https://vine.co/v/5dgMgdMtxMg
This second highlight is almost impossible to explain. Irving forces Channing Frye to set a gazillion screens before he uses one to lose his original defender. He then careens into the paint and spins into Porzingis. His previous dribbling has the Zinger unbalanced, which makes the spin move super effective. It gives Irving space to get the ball up, so it doesn’t get swatted.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgATXfmx5ik
The Knicks couldn’t keep up at all in the quarter, as they just relied on non-Kyrie solo action to score. They had just four assists. The Cavs lost Iman late in the action. He crashed into Kristap’s hip with his head on a drive. His glazed eyes hinted that he was probably concussed. The Cavs entered the final frame up big, 82-64.
The fourth quarter was essentially a formality, but the King started it anyways because he was two rebounds short of a triple-double. James got his final rebound halfway through and checked out. Love played a few minutes drawing three shooting fouls, one on an and-1. The scrubs didn’t do anything amazing, but it was nice to see James Jones hit a 3-pointer. Dunleavy even had a nice driving layup.
Gripes
1.Kyrie still isn’t playing the most intelligent defense. Rose burned him several times, but, more often than not, Irving switched onto the guy that his help defender was on and tried to at least be a nuisance. Rose had 17 points on 7-17 shooting, but he seemed to be skying to the rim anytime Irving was on him. Justin Holiday also hit two 3s over Irving.
2.Kevin Love had a double-double, 23-12. He also had 3 steals, but he went 6-15 from the floor and was 2-6 on wide open 3s. Love missed at least three gimme shots at the rim tonight. He needs to go up hard and try to dunk when he’s driving to the rim. He also couldn’t run the second-unit. In the first quarter, the Cavs tried to run the ball through him. He just kept bricking. However, I do credit Love with continuing to take shots and not shying away from the ball. He also kept rebounding all night.
3.The Cavs went 13-35 from deep on nearly all perfect looks. Hopefully, guys were just nervous and rusty.
Hypes
1.The King is fresh as ever. He had the triple-double, but he also had a backboard crushing block on Courtney Lee. To truly understand this block, you need to find the youngest person you know. Hopefully they’re under the age of ten. Let them try to do a layup. Let them blow by you. Then swat the crap out of the ball. Now, imagine doing that to someone that can dunk and actually dribble. It’s gotta be an awesome feeling. Also grunt when you do it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOlf5ViEFZI
The King also flashed some of the best court vision I have ever seen. Every time he got the ball he was ready to hit the open man no matter the ankle of the pass. I really appreciated a backdoor pass he got to a cutting J.R. Smith in the first quarter when three Knicks were watching him near the elbow.
2.The Cavs offense isn’t dribbling a ton at all this year. They are moving the ball better than I have ever seen them do it; they look borderline scary. 31 assists is ridiculous. They also had 16 fast break points.
3.I know the Cavs defense won’t ever be elite, but they held Melo and the Zinger to 35 combined points on 13-31 shooting. They simply tried to body them and make sure they had to work for every point. And, turnover wise, they caused 18. That isn’t going to happen all the time, but whenever they got a turnover and started a fast break they finished it. That’s something the Cavs can do every night.
4.Kyle O’Quinn is crazy. The guy shot a three, when I’m not even sure he can make a fifteen foot shot. He also fouled Smith, when Smith boxed him the heck out erasing any hope that he had of rebounding over a smaller and weaker man.
5. This night was something I can get used to. The Cavs just have too many guys to stop. LeBron makes the offense function so smoothly. The team almost had too many open shots to count. When the team needed to pull ahead, Kyrie stepped up and put on a scoring clinic to completely demoralize the Knicks.
6.Even though I thought Love didn’t play too great, the King felt differently. When the game was over and Love was being interviewed, the King walked up and playfully patted him. The pair then walked away and did one of their elaborate handshakes.
6.The Cavs play in Toronto on Friday.
Mozzy having himself a game in the first half with the Lakers….
His athleticism seems to be back after that knee surgery/injury.
Smokin’ Joe Harris had 16pts., 4 reb., 3 ast., 2 blocks, 2 steals! Good to see him get healthy too.
Plus I think Walton has a good plan for using him…
ESPN stat: The Dubs lost four home games in two years by a total of 25 pts. They lost the opener by 29.
Welcome Back CAVS the BLOG Family! What a way to start the season!
I just saw this and laughed…

My Gripes:
1. The string of TOs in the 2nd quarter.
2. Last night: Liggins > Shump. I do have to give Shump some credit, he wasn’t nearly as bad as last year’s Finals.
My Hypes:
1. LBJ’s passing.
2. Ball movement.
3. Kyrie going Kobe at the perfect time.
4. KLOVE’s defensive activity and aggressiveness.
5. RJ off the bench.
6. Dunleavy off the bench.
7. Team defense and rebounding.
I bet under on the over/under team wins thinking this team would just cruise, post championship hangover, etc. before turning it back on during the playoffs. Dumb bet. They absolutely figured out ball movement in the Atlanta series and will just bludgeon the lazier D teams this year with it.
First half was tight, tho that was mainly because they missed a bunch of wide-open looks. Ball movement is crisp, easy and fluid and they like to share. Chemistry looks great.
My thought is that they are now able to play free and easy. There are no more questions about fit or about Kyrie or about Love or about Lue. So they can play relaxed and easy and stress free basketball. Even coasting they will win at least 60 games.
Definitely agree… also, JR I think gains a lot of confidence with a ring.
Agree with Cols.
WHAT IS SHUMP’S STATUS (ALSO KILLER SHRIMP )—-LIKED WHAT I SAW IN THE 12 MINUTES FROM LIGGGINS —MAN HE HAS SOME ” MEATHOOKS ” FOR HANDS
Channing Frye>Porzingis
For the record, I listened on the radio, and the announced recognized the contributions of Blatt, Delly, Mozgov, Kaun, and Mo. And he also recognized Dahntay. The whole team got mentioned.
To David Wood: good recap. Maybe I was too harsh on you. There wasn’t much to gripe on in that game, other than the early shooting and our sudden issue with concussions.
Love had 23 pts on 15 shots. Yes, he missed a couple chippies. The Cavs shot 19 FTs, Love had 12 of them. The most efficient shot in the game is the FT. 23/12/2 with 3 steals in 25 minutes is pretty solid, yes? +24 was second on the team. And you gripe?
I have a gripe regarding your gripes.
This is why TS% so important. Accounts for free throws. FG% misses it, which is massively misleading in games with high FTs.
Great way to start the season. Love to see LBJ playing Oscar Robertson, that no-look to JR in the first half was astounding. This could be a mighty fun year. Apparantly GSW won’t be winning 82 games either. Who knew?
What an awesome night. Cavs, Tribe and Dubs all with the best possible results. It’s good to be back on here for the season!
Biggest thing I’m looking forward to this year is how Kyrie continues to develop. I rewatched games 5-7 over the weekend and although clearly LeBron had an otherworldly series, Kyrie won us game 7 with his scoring in the second half. Ridiculous shot after ridiculous shot. I had forgotten how many there were. I think he could end up with the scoring title for sure.
What an amazing night in the 216! Cavs are awesome, Tribe is awesome, Cleveland is awesome! Got chills watching that banner go up. Such an amazing feeling. Great recap DW… although in rewatching the game (since I spent a lot of my time watching the Tribe last night), I think KLove had a better game than you give him credit for… Hate to see Shump get hurt (again), but it might actually be a great opportunity for Liggins to show his stuff defensively… LBJ is clearly on a mission to take back that MVP trophy… And the icing on the… Read more »
I probably am a little too harsh on Love. I just hate it when bigs go up weak. I’ve been listening to Austin Carr for too many years. He did do a great job getting open and was very active the whole night, which hasn’t always been the case for him.
23-12 in 25 minutes.
Well, although the Knicks aren’t very good on D, two of their better defensive players (Noah and Porzingis) affected Love and TT both a little. That said, I thought Kev was more assertive and decisive than a times last season… If he hits one or two more of those threes, it’s all of a sudden a monster game for him…
I actually hope Shump is out for a few weeks. Not that I don’t like the guy, or think he doesn’t have a valuable spot on this team….but I’d like to see Liggins with a full-time trial in the Shump role. If Liggs can be 80% of Shump, for 1/10 the price, then we’ve got a nice piece of trade bait.
Nope. Shump needs to play.
Everything is Awesome

Take note to all the GM’s / Owners Don’t ever let Golden State acquire an interior defensive presence through trades or whatever means. I think we all saw the first chink of the armor. They have a very weak interior/post defense. They also aren’t a very good rebounding team. Stoping them the first shot attempt is crucial because they thrive in chaos. We all know what kind of personnel they have so limiting their attempts is important. Also you have to use your timeouts wisely to kill momentum. Pop did a very good job in calling timeouts. LMA ate Draymond… Read more »
They have Javale McGee in side — they’re set!!
JA-VALE MA-GEE! (shouted in Shaq voice)
https://vine.co/v/5dX9UUa0hXx
This will be the best vine of the first half of the season…
The “first chink in the armor” was actually the finals last year. The Cavs showed the blueprint for beating the Dubs- chase them on the perimeter, then own the paint. The funny thing is, the Dubs didn’t get the memo. The doubled down on their strengths, and exacerbated their weaknesses. I called it out in July- while GS will be damn fun to watch with Durant, the team takes a step backwards. Adding the league’s best shooter to what was already the league’s best shooting team provides minimal return. They had to sacrifice their bench depth to make it happen,… Read more »

My regular season wish list
1. Everybody stay healthy.
2. 62-20 #1 in the east.
3. Lebron 5th MVP.
4. Lebron’s jumper.
5. All of our BIg 3 make it to New Orleans.
6. Kyrie make any all-NBA team.
7. Warriors get drubbed all season long and remain the biggest disappointments in the NBA.
After Simmons swatted away a pathetic Curry layup attempt, Curry fell down. I swear he was about to cry.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRkjQupb9UE
Love it. Especially with the scoreboard below the action. Locals are a little freaked out, but I think they’ll figure it out pretty fast.
True… but good teams like the Spurs and Cavs will be able to exploit their biggest weaknesses…
He must still be suffering from that “knee injury” that caused all of his shots in the paint to get blocked by LeBron.
“But, but…but Kevin, you said this wouldn’t happen anymore….”
Attending the game, it was clear LeBron wasnt going to lose the opener on ring night with the tribe playing next door. I dont expect to see this level of LeBron much more during regular season, but I wasnt surprised by it given what we saw in the Finals. Liggins looked very good I thought – better than Shump I actually liked the KLove running the offense experiment. I think its a brilliant idea to use him as a semi-backup-point guard; not bringing the ball up but running the offense Our rebounding tho with Love, James, and TT – kept… Read more »
Did they mention Blatt, Delly or Moz? TNT played a few video montages over top of the ring ceremony, so I couldn’t hear any of it.
Who who and who??
New season same old horse(s)…
The players did. Not sure about Blatt
Yes, the announcer mentioned Delly and Moz as members of the championship team, but I didn’t hear Blatt’s name. Perhaps I just missed it too.
Joachim Noah will never win anything (individual/team) in this league ever again. Book it. I wish he would be posterized on every game in his career.
If I’m giving it a small amount of thought, I think he’s the guy I dislike the most in the entire NBA, like ever. Yep more than anyone on the Warriors.. Joakim is Lebron’s b***h btw, never won a series against LBJ.
Noah is second to Donkey for me…
At least Draymond can play offense.
Seriously prime Noah isn’t that far than prime Andy. Noah is 2 levels ahead in overall defense, Andy is 3 levels ahead in offense.
I think that Love will begin to look better running the second unit in the future. As he gets more comfortable it will flow smoothly. He’s a smart player with great court vision and good passing skills, so no reason why he can’t run our offense when Kyrie and Bron aren’t out there.
The OtherJason, I was at the game too and Noah was indeed a douchebag for still shooting free throws as the ceremony was about to start. No class from that guy. I couldn’t tell if it was security or a coach that chased him off the floor, but maybe he planned to shoot the free throws as the ceremony started. And Noah looked old and slow on the court.
Love was 23 and 12 and it’s a gripe.
he gets so many good shots (because he’s really smart at spacing and getting himself open) that he’s gonna catch gripes. all his shots are basically makeable, which is why people get mad. but agree he was everything we need him to be and was super good on the glass and on D
You’re valid. I just want to see him light it up for 40. He will a few times this season I’m sure.
Thought Love was really good in hunting and getting good open shots. crazy to think that he probably should have had 30-15 in 25 minutes instead of 23-12 if fully optimized.
and this was with minus contributions from JR, Shump and TT.
this is a perfectly constructed team at the peak of its powers. please enjoy.
I actually do agree with you that Love’s night wasn’t such a disappointment to me. Did he miss some shots he shouldn’t have? Yes. But his game and attitude look light years more comfortable than last year. He was driving around Zinger whenever he wanted and didn’t get pushed around on defense. If he made those open baskets, you are right, he would have been looking at 30-35 pts and 15 rebounds in only 25 minutes of play… We can’t forget that he is a high volume scorer so efficiency hasn’t been his calling card. He will need to work… Read more »
LeBron and Kawahi will battle for MVP. Book it folks.
LeBron >>>> Kawhi
Last night WAS a great night. Some real positive stuff going on. Glad we didn’t lose another opener to the Knicks. I should have never drafted a Warrior for fantasy… it’s going to take them some time to figure things out. However, if they never do and my fantasy team is awful, hurrah! Haha I’m willing to sacrifice to see the Dubs implode.
Anyone else notice how locked in Lebron was? There was a long rebound where he leaked out to start a fastbreak. Knicks got the offensive rebound and swung to Melo on the opposite wing. Lebron full sprinted from near half court to close out hard on Melo. Melo actuallly had to pivot back and stepped out of bounds. Lebron is gunning for the MVP this season.
I remember that play. Last season he would have given up. He’s playing very freely. Perfect amount of locked in defense with gambling.
Couldn’t watch this one, appreciate the great recap.
Great night for the Cavs, and the Spurs take a massive dump on the Oracle court for the Dubs to clean up. What a fine evening of basketball.
Thanks for the recap, missed half this game.
Everyone on these boards are so giddy. It’s great but it’s making me nervous….
Great win. Great night for city.
I did miss me some Delly, though. That was only sad part.
Yeah it was a bummer – gone is the Commonwealth Connection.
LeBron is going to be doing a lot more orchestrating this season than the last two.
Canadian Dynamite is still from the Commonwealth!
AM I AWAKE —-IF I AM STILL DREAMING DO NOT WAKE ME UP —–WOW WHAT A NIGHT —-AGREE ON THE MISSED SHOTS BY KLOVE / BUT THINK MORE OFTEN THAN NOT HE WILL KNOCK THEM DOWN–ALSO HE APPEARS TO BEING TAKING IT MORE AGGRESSIVELY TO THE RIM —–LIKE WHEN YOU HAVE LEBRON / FRYE / DUNLEAVY / R.J ON THE FLOOR TOGETHER —MAN THAT EXPERIENCE AND INTELLIGENT BASKETBALL REALLY SHOWS AND IS FUN TO WATCH
Great recap. I was in Tribe mode so missed this one.
