Recap: Cleveland 86, New York 117 (or if this team was a horse, someone would shoot it) — Updated
2014-01-30That was awful. I’ve had surgeries that were more fun than that game. Cleveland didn’t compete in the first half, spotting the Knicks 17 points on a 38-21 first quarter, and then mailing in a 22-15 second quarter. A token effort was made in the third. Cleveland actually cut the lead to 15 at one point, and outscored New York 29-21 (this game’s lone moral victory), before the Knicks “rallied” to post a 36-21 fourth. There was very little good, and a lot of bad in the way the Cavs played tonight
Andy didn’t suit up, and Tyler Zeller started in his place. New York came out on fire, and Cleveland seemed like deer in the headlights. Mike Brown seemed powerless to adjust to New York’s small lineup, with Carmelo Anthony at the four, and J.R. Smith at the three. The matchup became Deng on Anthony and Tristan Thompson on J.R. Smith, because, you know, that makes sense. Tristan Thompson was helpless. Smith destroyed him, and Tristan finished with two points, two rebounds and five personal fouls in 22 minutes. To say that teams have figured him out, would be like saying hackers have figured out Target. Tristan Thompson can’t guard anyone who can shoot, and he can’t shoot, himself. I love the guy, but he’s been exposed.
Luol Deng played a valiant game. The Cavs made a concerted effort to get him the ball early, but he just couldn’t finish consistently around the basket. The achilles injury is clearly bothering him. Deng ended up 3-9 with 13 points and 11 assists. His defense on ‘Melo was decent in the second half was solid, and the fact that keep I will miss his game when he’s playing anywhere but here next season.

Update: Logged in to find that I’d hit “Publish” in my sleep last night, so, I apologize for the brevity of the initial post. It was supposed to be finished this morning. I’ll add that Dion Waiters played a a solid game and seemed to exert some effort in scoring and playing with “energy” (what does that even mean?). He was 8-15 with 21 points in 25 minutes, but as Greg Anthony noted in the TNT broadcast, the Cavs seem to have no offensive structure, no idea what they want to do, and everything is initiated with the dribble.
Speaking of off the dribble, Greg Anthony quoted Mark Jackson, coach of the Warriors, as saying that Jarrett Jack was one of the, “greatest leaders he’s ever been around.” If by “leading,” Jackson meant chucking up contested elbow jumpers early in the shot clock, then I’d agree. Jack joined the “one-fer” gang, and went 1-8, joining Thompson, Clark, Bennett, and Zeller in the “yay, I made (one) basket” department. They were better than the “o-fer” gang of Gee and Delly who couldn’t hit any field goals. Jack, like many other Cavs just played as if he didn’t trust any of his teammates, and just wanted to pull a Snake Plissken, and Escape From New York.
C.J. was a not awful -8 in 13 minutes (not awful compared to everyone else). He finished with nine on 3-4 shooting from outside the arc. Naturally he only played 13 minutes. Zeller played 14 and had two points and a rebound. Those players’ minutes and their production point to a humongous problem with this team. Outside of Irving, Waiters, Andy, Deng, and — debatably — Tristan Thompson, no one on this team seems to know what their role is. It’s not helping. C.J. doesn’t know if he’s playing 10 minutes or 35. Zeller doesn’t know either. It doesn’t seem as if there’s, you know, a “plan” with each game.
Brown seemed to have no answer for New York’s offense. I guess he didn’t realize that with Deng guarding Melo, Smith would be on Tristan. The Cavs had no idea what they wanted to do on offense, and half the subs came in and ran around like chickens with their heads cut off. The most comical Brown move was to bring in Anthony Bennett to guard ‘Melo, which lead to vicious crossovers and violent dunks for Anthony (Caremelo Anthony). Gum Drop Bear returned from his his outlier 15 point game to score 4 points off 1-6 shooting.
A Henry Sims sighting completes the night. He played hard, got some layups and some blocks. He earned himself some more playing time. Maybe he should get some minutes when whoever is going replace Chris Grant sends Anthony “sunk cost” Bennett to the D-League.
It’s hard to know what to say about this team, other than they seemed scared out of their minds to be playing on national television. Please, for the love of God, Dan Gilbert, start interviewing people to run this basketball team. You and the people you have in charge are doing an awful job.
@J Hill Seriously? How do you figure that draft leads to getting A Davis? And why in hell would we want Derrick Williams over Kyrie. TT was the missed pick in that draft, not Kyrie.
I wish we would have drafted Derrick Williams and Kemba Walker, I said it all along. Then we get the #1 pick draft Anthony Davis and boom we look like New Orleans but with a better team name.
Agreed Mallory. As much as I like the intensity and grit of a player like Dion, his personality (which should come as no surprise if you look at his past) is destroying the team’s unity. I agree that Kyrie has to should some responsibility, but if the Cavs are going to try and improve their situation, much better to get the sulky temperamental streaky player off the team than the sulky temperamental semi-superstar. At least Kyrie might draw some FA’s!
Kj, please show me any nonsensical defenses I have posted in regards to Kyrie Irving. TV63 is right. The national media script is flipping on Kyrie Irving. They are realizing it’s his third year in the league and his team sucks. His choice as an All Star starter has been widely panned. TV63, 0-25 with 17 turnovers was hyperbole, it wasn’t meant to represent in any way what I think of Dion Waiters as a player. What isn’t hyperbole is that if that was a Waiters stat line in real life, Kj would still be whining about any criticism that… Read more »
Dion is not some garbage player some make him out on here. He’s still considered a top shooting guard. himhttp://dimemag.com/2013/10/top-20-shooting-guards-nba-right-now/2/ He was selected in Rising Stars. The over the top anti-Dion biased is so unbalanced You pile on him when he performs bad but when he does well ; you refuse to give him props even when former NBA players will. How can your analysis be credible in that scenario.? Besides, Brown would never allow more than 3 TO’s from Waiters so 17 is stretch. But KJ the media is turning on Kyrie BIG TIME. Kenny Smith , Barkley, Shaq,… Read more »
@ross you are projecting. Rational, clear criticism of Kyrie is met IMMEDIATELY by you posting a nonsensical defense that includes needless attacks. Look in the mirror, dude…
Of course there is blame to be had but EVERYTHING starts with your best player. What are you not getting here?? You people are in denial. My post wasn’t about Dion. It was how the national media looks at the Cavs and Kyrie and how it will effect his pending contract situation. This is THE issue. Period. Did you guys read Windhorst’s article?
Are you guys seriously going to say Kyrie has bought in to Brown’s system? What games could you possibly be watching?
Kj, just stop with your Kyrie is the problem, Dion is the best player on the Cavs drivel. Why can’t everyone agree that there is no one individual responsible for the Cavaliers malaise. It’s not Mike Brown. Not Chris Grant. Not Kyrie Irving. Not Dion Waiters. Not Dan Gilbert. Not Tristan Thompson. There is blame to be shared across the board…everyone just needs to be accountable for themselves and hold each other accountable. We all know you are hyper sensitive to any Dion Waiters criticism. Zach Lowe didn’t “rip Dion Waiters.” He gave constructive criticism specific to his transition defense… Read more »
Dion is as big (if not a bigger) part of the problem as Kyrie. They’re all culpable. The difference is Kyrie has been consistently FAR above average for his entire career, while Dion has never shown enough consistency to even be considered average. Facts of life, unfortunately.
Look, your best player had to buy in and it is CLEAR he is not. I don’t know what else anyone could possibly think is going on here. Anthony nailed it by just watching them and immediately identifying locker room issues just by the way they okay on the floor. Here’s the real problem, the media, esp the national, is on “Kyrie’s side,” fir lack of a better term. They are going to blame Brown, Grant and Gilbert (cuz most national guys think of him as a meddling buffoon) but not Kyrie. So, the drumbeat in Kyrie’s circle will be… Read more »
Jason Williams was flashy and so is Kyrie Irving. Neither are known for their defense. I can make some comparisons between most players if I want it to fit my narrative. Your narrative being that Kyrie Irving is overrated, not deserving of the hype/accolades that has been given to him, and not a winner/leader. FWIW, Jason Williams made the NBA Playoffs 8 times during his career. 7 of those trips were during his age 23 thru 31 seasons when he was the starting PG for his teams (Kings, Grizzlies, Heat). He won an NBA title as Miami’s starting PG (granted… Read more »
@Ross-
Is Jason Williams so outlandish? Which part of the comparison doesn’t fit?
– The one-on-five mentality?
– The tendancy to choose flashy dribbling/playmaking over a more methodical running of the team?
– Complete lack of interest in defense?
– Pull-up three pointers on fast breaks?
I’m not saying they are the exact same player; Kyrie is far more talented. What I’m saying is they have the same type of game- lots of flash, very entertaining, but doesn’t translate to wins.
It’s hard to be tough on Chris Grant when he assembled a great team on paper and the team refuses to buy into the system… Think if someone came up to you last year and told you the starting lineups would be: Irving, Waiters, Deng, Thompson, Varejao with CJ, Jarret Jack, Zeller, and Anthony Bennett in tow? or Irving, Waiters, Gee/Clark/AB, Varejao, Andrew Bynum with TT, Jarret Jack, Zeller, and AB in tow? These lineups would have blown our minds a year ago if they were possible. I don’t know what CG could have done differently (besides, you know, Oladipo… Read more »
Two More Questions:
How much does Mike Brown deserve credit for the Cavs success during the ‘Good Years” when Sasha P, Damon J, Daniel G, Drew G, and Larry H being at the very least serviceable defensive specialists?
And how much is it currently a ‘buying in’ issue? A new coach coming in and calling the players out on their shit should be a good thing, are they just too immature to take it to heart?
PG – Kyrie (36) SG – CJ (30) SF – Deng (38) PF – Tristan (32) C – Andy (30) 6 – Dion (30) 7 – Zeller (16) 8 – Delly (16) 9 – Bennett (12) 10- Clark (foul trouble/garbage time/injury/etc) 11 – Jack (it hurts to pay him to ride the pine but seriously what is he adding to this team?) 12 – Sims (break glass in case of emergency) IR – Gee (and we used to fancy him as the best defender on our team) NBDL – Karasev (if the season continues to spiral out of control, i’d… Read more »
Bright Spot though small. It was nice to see former NBA players on TNT give praise to Waiters on a national level for his hard work ethic. He was one of the very few still hustling. Greg Anthony and Harlan commenting, “Waiters doesn’t give up. He’s still fighting” He is tough as nails. If that’s not a quality in leadership then I don’t know what is. Brown has been a complete failure on using him right because he considers him a rook that he needs to bench on any mild infarction. Now don’t look behind that curtain on Jack’s monolithic… Read more »
Welp, guess it’s right about time to fire Mike Brown and bring Byron Scott back in!
1) Something has to be done now. Can’t let the season play out anymore.
2) It has to be Mike Brown or several of the players that haven’t bought in.
3) Even if the ship is righted somewhat, we will never go deep into the playoffs with Mike Brown. Somebody in the Laker organization astutely realized this early on . . . and somebody moved swiftly to take care of it before things fell apart.
I have some questions for the group: 1. How long does it take for a team to really understand a defensive system and to really live it? I remember MB said when he was first here, it was 90 percent defense, and the next year the focus was 80 because the players were slowly getting it. 2. How long does it take for big guys to develop? Is it unexpected that Zeller, TT, and Anthony Bennett have taken longer than Kyrie and Waiters? 3. Is there any precedent to a team with A) A Super Young Team and B) A… Read more »
Wow – the mob has turned on Kyrie!! I do NOT believe the Cavs should trade Kyrie unless he makes it explicitly clear that he’s gone. And, I still believe that Kyrie is a potential superstar. He’s not a Lebron-like once in a lifetime talent, but he’s capable of being a top-5 player. His practice with Team USA showed that – hence all of the hype. Kyrie deserves some of the blame, but he’s 21, so I’ll excuse some of his poor play on immaturity and lack of leadership, talent and a good system around him. Trading Kyrie is dumb.… Read more »

Halfway through the first quarter when it was already apparent that the Cavs were going to be listless and lifeless, I was hoping for any of the following to happen ASAP: 1. Kyrie Irving, Jarrett Jack (supposedly a great leader according to Mark Jackson), Luol Deng (respected veteran), or any player that makes sense in some respect to LIGHT UP THE ENTIRE TEAM IN A HUDDLE. Get in EVERYONE’S FACE and state the obvious – the lack of effort is UNACCEPTABLE. 2. A Cav getting pissed off enough at all of the Knicks dancing and preening and the fact that… Read more »

I think Jason Lloyd’s has some telling points, especially # 22: http://www.ohio.com/blogs/cleveland-cavaliers/cleveland-cavaliers-1.275356/knicks-117-cavs-86-jason-lloyd-s-final-thoughts-on-kyrie-irving-and-free-agency-1.463099 21. The Knicks danced and pranced off the court following timeouts. The Cavs stood by and watched. This team has shown no heart, no fight, no pride. There is an obvious disconnect between Brown and these players. A few players have said this season regardless of what they thought of Byron Scott as a coach, he was a players’ coach. He played in the league, he related to these guys, he got along with them. For whatever reason, the transition to Brown has been much more difficult than… Read more »
I get that everyone is frustrated right now; so am I. But there are so many outlandish things being said about the Cavs by the commenters on this site.
grover13,
Respectfully, you have no idea what you are talking about. White Chocolate’s best season was his age 26 season when he averaged 14.8 points and 8 assists. Kyrie is averaging 20.9 pts and 5.8 ast for his career, and HE’S 21 YEARS OLD.
First the obvious: the FIRE MIKE BROWN chants need to start, and they need to get loud quickly. The longer this goes on, the worse it’s going to get.
Also….I’m starting to think that Kyrie Irving is nothing more than a rich man’s White Chocolate (fka Jason Williams).
I found a new trick dealing with comment monster and the sticky keyboard. Go to another screen and type your comments on Wordpad. Highlight and copy. Now go back to Cavs blog reply box and click paste. Wha-La then click Submit. So much easier!
If someone can in fact rescue comments, I have 1 lost to the monster as well :(
I’ve tried 4 times to post a comment. The monster ate all 4. Please only rescue one of them. They all say the same thing.
For everyone killing our starting lineup/defensive matchups last night. What do you propose? Kyrie was guarding Felton CJ was guarding Prigioni Deng was guarding Melo TT was guarding JR Smith Zeller was guarding Chandler Feel free to mix them around. There’s not a single set that “makes sense.” I guess you could have “hid” TT on Prigoni and had CJ on JR Smith, but that would be strange as well. We don’t play zone defense. I guess we could have started a different lineup with Deng as a small ball PF and Waiters on JR Smith, but we have literally… Read more »
Thanks you Jim, A voice of reason, Just because you work hard does not mean you should be a starter. He is a 8 player of the bench at best.
Tristan should not be starting on any NBA team. This team most of all. This team NEED a low post scorer in the same spot that Tristan is standing in.
For a supposed defensive guru, Mike Brown’s defensive assignments leave a lot to be desired. Why would Tristan Thompson ever guard JR Smith except on possibly pick and roll switches? Ditto Bennett on Anthony in isolation? Makes zero sense. His coaching also does not seem to be getting through as the Cavs repeatedly were unable to provide any help defense whatsoever. Also, let’s stop the Tristan Thompson as building block nonsense. Guy plays hard at times but simply does not have the requisite skills to ever be considered an offensive threat. He also has trouble guarding anyone outside of 8… Read more »
Someone mentioned trading Deng. Is that legally possible considering we just traded for him?
This is probably the ultimate low point for the Cavs. After 3 painful years of sucking in the hopes of a rebuild, and winning (losing?) excellent draft positioning, they can now field roster that has four top four draft picks (with TWO overall number ones.) And the team is absolutely pathetic. It is astonishing how bad players are when they get to Cleveland. Look at the past ten years, has there been a player, acquired either by draft, trade, or free agency, that has actually been AS GOOD (or dare I say better?) in Cleveland than he was with his… Read more »
Kojo – Are you saying the Cavs won’t make that trade – or Philly won’t? Age is a non factor. (I don’t think Philly makes that trade.)
The NBA has changed. Players are transients. You don’t have to draft five good players and keep them from their early 20’s to mid 30’s to be successful. Generally, 2-3 players stick around for more than 4-5 years.
Draft – evaluate – trade for pieces that fit.
Someone get me of this ledge… Can this team be this bad? I just don’t see a bright spot anymore. This team is fundamentally flawed. No low post scorer, A jump shooting team, no great defenders at any position (less Andy), Injury prone, undersized at every spot but sf, no leader, no pride, no bench, no shot blockers, to young, poor ball movement, selfish ball play, guys looking out for themselves. slow at ever spot. And when you really look at the best player on this team is this not a fair description? He is injury prone. He is not… Read more »
Underdog … Are you and JHill the same person? There is no way they are trading Kyrie for MCW who is a year older than Kyrie.
It still depresses me that the Cavs didn’t go after Kawhi Leonard. He made too much sense in 2011. But that was during the Lebron pipe dream. Because anytime you can build your team without filling a position in hopes of getting a player three years from now, you do it. Right?
@ Underdog
“It’s a good thing McCleod and Austin Carr didn’t do this game. McCleod would have had to give Austin mouth-to-mouth by the mid second quarter.”
LOL. I can imagine Austin turning to the Cavs bench and saying “Get that weak stuff outta here!”.
I agree Brown has been abysmal, but this is certainly not entirely his fault. Grant did a horrible job of drafting players that made sense together, and after three years it’s become depressingly obvious.
great comments by all—–we are now ( AGAIN THE JOKE OF THE NBA —ON NATIONAL T.V. )—I have coached h.s. ball for over 20 yrs and my players can rotate def. and run an off better than the cavs ( that all goes back to coaching—-brown is clueless )—yes I mentioned in an earlier c.b.—as much as I hate to do it —it is time to trade Anderson and deng—-their value is still high——–can someone do some research for me—–in the recent drafts —which players were taken after — TRISTAIN / DION / TYLER / BENNETT—– I bet with the… Read more »
I really don’t see how Mike Brown is back next season. The team has clearly tuned him out. Calling out your team publicly for a lack of effort is a last resort. Having to do it to reporters means that he can’t handle it in the locker room. What could possibly be the next step? It’s not even the All-Star break and they’ve checked out. I can’t imagine what the rest of the season will be like. I won’t fault CG for his hire, at least not totally. Something tells me that Dan Gilbert was pretty instrumental there. You know,… Read more »
Exactly Bryan! Brown has ruined everything he touches. How sad is it when they don’t even know how to run a set or make a play? He’s had plenty of time to coach 101 Basketball.
It won’t matter who you let go or pick up on this roster (unless maybe you pick up Lebron), as long as Mike Brown is coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers, they are doomed to fail!
@Robert
I still think Lance is the best bet if you can’t get a draft pick high enough. Lance is to me the best creator for others on that Indiana team right now; and I think he’d do a lot better next to Kyrie than Dion.
Can we just get Kevin Love already (not that he probably wants to come here)… Get some cap space and sign him in the offseason. A true stretch 4, scorer, rebounder, passer… Keep Varajao at the 5. The cap space cleared by getting rid of Waiters, Jack, and probably Tristan (if possible to keep him and put him on the bench, I’d be ok with that) would be enough, right? Hope is at an all time low… optimism is a sarcastic joke… I’ve moved on to wishful thinking I guess, but there is a lot of talent deep in this… Read more »
Yesterday I was joking. Today I’m not:
Start off with Kyrie & Thompson for MCW and Thad Young. Straight up.
Ya gotta start by trading Kyrie to get somebody you think can anchor you. The rest of the misfit toys will just bring other teams’ misfit toys, unless you get two teams bidding on the potential of one of them.
The first thing that has to happen is the FO has to be brutally honest on the litany of problems. Ignorance on offense. Why has the shooting% been allowed to be this bad? Has this team tuned out Brown and WHY? Has this team tuned out each other as well and Who? Is player development being main streamed the right way? In other words, team has to learn to play without ANdy and now they throw Bennet in the fire with significant minutes. He is making many mistakes out there that they must make up for. They are overwhelmed. Is… Read more »

Well said TV63, MB needs to go, NOW! The Cavs have zero functioning offensive sets, none, NADA, ZILTCH. It pathetic! I know they have the ability, coach Scott had them running offensive sets decently. What changed? The coach!
Tough day for Cavs. There was a national media onslaught from ESPN, Pardon the INterruption, TNT, Inside the NBA that went on throughout the day of what went wrong. PTI had said Chris Grant constructed this team and that includes the coach. It is responsibilty to know if they fit. There is a general consensus the team has given up their fight. Most striking were the comments of Greg Anthony on offendse, ” This is really sad. They don’t know how to run a set, make a play, it’s all ISO. (Harlan began laughing) It’s not funny. I watched every agonizing minute of the game. Barkley was too kind. I actually wanted to see him rip Chris Grant and Mike Brown to shreds. Our worry of the past couple seasons that a losing culture could ruin this young team appear to be real. I never thought they would become the Kings of the East because of Gilbert’s commitment to the team. They are a Costa Concordia sized disaster on the court. The time for patience is probably up. MB did set himself up for failure by not getting a top notch offensive coach to assist him on his journey , I liked to see MB succeed in his second tour but I don’t see any light at the end of the tunel. I also agree that we need another big body . We need to go after a PG and a SG in the next draft in case we need to trade the current unhappy starter and the sixth man of the bench. @Scott The roster will have to be rebuilt if this team finds its way to the top 5 of the draft over the next couple months. I think the key is getting a 2-guard (or small forward) who can distribute well and run an offense because I’m losing faith in Kyrie’s ability to do that. Someone on this roster is going to have to be the point man, and I’m not sure that player is on the roster right now. I think you need a player like Lance Stephenson to do that. Lance is easily one of the best distributing… Read more »
As a long term Cleveland sports fan with no problem waiting until it is time, my take is this: The Cavs rebuild was going OK considering the worst three year stretch of draft talent in forever. Apparently last summer the word came down to “go for it now”. This must be the reason for overpaying for JJ. Why the rush? Maybe DG is having money problems? The casino biz is not doing so great. Or, maybe DG is a hothead? I recall reading that he has been known to punch people at Bar Mitzvahs. Whatever. I think we can agree… Read more »
Tanking is the only way forward.
This game was cruel for Cavs fans. It’s one thing to lose, but we got blown out by a Knicks team that isn’t even very good. When a coach and GM publicly call-out their players efforts and then the team gets blown out on national television… Well, it’s just painful to see. This team is pitiful and it’s hard to imagine that these Brown and the players turn things around. Things wouldn’t seem so dire if we didn’t know how badly the Cavs organization wants to make the playoffs. Besides tanking, what can the team do to change things up… Read more »
The problem with this team is basically the entire roster. 1) Kyrie just isn’t a great facilitator for others in terms of basketball IQ. He can make flashy passes now or then, but he has no real idea of how to run an offense and how to play within a team offense more specifically. Also, he hasn’t taken that step to the next level of leadership and skill that you see players make in year 3; he’s young, but I’m not entirely sure he’ll really develop his IQ in terms of team offense that much further. 2) Tristan Thompson: hustle… Read more »

BTW,
I was working this evening, but got to catch some of the game and post game show on the radio. For the first time I have noticed, Chones and the post game guys were discussing what a disaster is going down. And these guys get paid to be homers.
We (CtB staff and commenters) can and do agree things are a mess.
We don’t agree what to do. There are no easy answers.
Debating what should have been done in the past is a waste of time.
Here’s an idea lets draft an energy guy #4 because we can’t take a risk on a position of need. #ChrisGrantshowinghessmarterthaneveryone
