Live Thread: Cavs at Nets
2015-03-27The Nets host the streaking Cavaliers Friday night sitting only a half game out of the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. The NBA’s Sweet Sixteen might not be the same accomplishment as it is in NCAA ball, but Brooklyn would certainly feel better about themselves if they were to squeeze into the playoff picture. The Nets have been a particularly boring bunch this season, falling victim to injury and general comatose. Any team that relies too much on Deron Williams’ legs and the venerable Jarrett Jack is probably not going to strike fear into hearts around the league.
Still, with no high draft picks coming until the the end of this decade, the Nets would rather taste a first round sweep than vacation early. Brook Lopez is currently heading the Brooklyn charge. In the four games since the Cavaliers handed Brooklyn a twenty-five point loss, Lopez has averaged a gaudy 30.8 PPG, to go along with three and a half blocks per contest. His recent play is reminding the NBA how valuable a healthy Brook Lopez can be. There is a strong chance he will test the free agent market this summer if the bigman can finish out the remainder of the season in one piece. With Thaddeus Young out with a left knee strain, Deron Williams and Joe Johnson will look to help Lopez out on the offensive end.
In more entertaining news, the Wine and Gold come off their most impressive victory of the season. After completely dismantling a very strong Memphis team, Cleveland will try to win their fifth straight and nine of the last ten. The Cavaliers have done more than pass their difficult slate of games. They have played their best ball of the season. If the Cavs’ offense continues to whip the rock around the court like it has in recent games, the Nets will be at Cleveland’s mercy. Add in the much improved Cavalier defense, and it is hard to envision a victory for the home team.
It will be interesting to see how David Blatt defends Lopez in the post. Kevin Love did a decent job of limiting Marc Gasol without too much help. Timofey Mozgov treated Zach Randolph like a dinner served away from the Brew Garden. Z-Bo may have been swatted to the window. Sound off.
KYRIE!
Blatt gets a T! (His second of the year?) He objected to the string of charging calls against the Cavs.
Well it is getting a little ridiculous… Joey’s crew gotta meet their quotas though…
Pathetic Cavs fans of today mirror the Heat fans of yesteryear, whom they despised. Such spineless hypocrisy.
Fourth charge called by Joey Crawford’s highway Patrol…
I’m out, even NCAA basketball is more exciting than this.
We’ll miss you Cols…
KLove fighting inside like a wildman!
The Brooklyn crowd oohs and aahs over Kyrie’s handle (but he misses the J).
Kyrie being Kyrie.
JR dealing in the lane, nice assist to TT.
Nice pick by JR on that 3 by Love.
This is a very boring game. If I’m bored, you know the Cavs are.
It’s better than no basketball at all… like yesterday…
Somehow the Cavs have scored the last 7 points, over the course of about 10 possessions for each team.
KLOVE!!
Turnover-fest continues. Both teams getting in the spirit!
Bro-lo doesn’t really have a “jump shot”… it’s more like a tip-toe shot…
Dave Boylan would be a really good corner coach for a boxer…
Place I’m at doesn’t have FSN. So I’m reading the recap while I watch the super Mario brothers super show. Danica McKellar started in this episode. I love the late 80s.
I loved that show! Winnie was the ultimate crush back in the Wonder Years days…
the moz needs some ” brew garden grub ” at half and a little ” boost ” from liz to start the 2nd half
Well, lack of defensive intensity, iso, turnovers. Did I miss anything?
Yeah, giving up 57 points, 30 in the paint… but hey… they’re only down one even with all that…
Kyrie with the great block to end the half
Now Anderson is going scrub-fuego…
Moz tried to swat that ball into the hoop like he swatted that effigy sandwich and cole slaw off the table…
Love with the power move down low! (On a smaller defender.)
KLove inside move!
8 assists on 19 made shots. Sad face.
It’s almost like Joey Crawford and his gang are trying to see if they can go for the record for charge calls against the Cavs… is it like cops at the end of the month where they have to fill their ticket quota? It IS March 28th after all…
Joey Crawford LOVES to make an emphatic charge call
Nine turnovers tonight against a bad defensive team. Sloppy sloppy sloppy.
Little-known fact: Mozgov is Russian for both “sad eyes” and “bad hands,” depending on the context.
It’s also apparently American slang for “my large friend” if you believe the Brew Garden commercials…
In all truth, it is actually Russian for “brains.” I don’t know if that means smart or just that zombies wander around moaning “mozgov, movgov” all the time.
Google translate doesn’t recognize it in Russian. Says it’s Slovak for “drain,” as in maybe one of his ancestors was a plumber. Imagine Moz fitting himself under your kitchen sink to work on the drain.
As in… the Nets hopes are about to go down the Mozgov?
hahahahahahahaa
well, Wikepedia and Google translate are going to have a throw down, because Wiki says it means brains.
Or JR Swish just Mozgoved that three?
Going from English to Russian, Google does translate “brain” as “mozg,” so add the Russian -ov suffix, and I think that makes Mozgov “son of brain.”
Ok, I’ll stop now.
I sometimes feel like Moz is just not paying attention on offense… like he can’t quite believe that they’re passing it to him to score…
Probably a carryover from playing for the Knicks.
I just love watching Kyrie Irving play basketball… happiness defined.
JR SWISH!
JR with the tough step-back 3.
Shump’s hair has, like, crenellations tonight. Is that a style? Is there a name for it?
Hair crown?
King me?
The big Royale?
Those are all brilliant!
Shump forces the steal and gets the reward from Kyrie on the other end…
James hits another 3, but right now this offense is pretty much the opposite of the other night against Memphis.
Not too worried… even with the outside bricks, they’re only down by 4… maybe three after the Shump and 1
Bogdanavich has some range…
But so does the King…
Okay, finally. They’re warmed up now.
Keep chucking those 20 footers, JJ, that’s what makes you great.
JAMES FREAKING JONES!
Third time’s a charm…
LBJ breaks the three point dry spell at six…
I thought LBJ talked to Joey Crawford about calling flops as charges at the end of the first quarter… smh…
Jarrett Jack going scrub-fuego.
The Champ just looks awkward on the rare occasions that he fakes the three and drives for the mid-ranger…
Only his 17th (!) 2-point attempt of the season, versus 150-plus threes.
Somewhere, GM Morey creams his pants.
Cavs have missed four straight threes…
It seems like a brickapalooza out there. Looks like they’re going to have to actually try a little.
Bro-lo and Jo-Jo doing the damage against the Cavs early…
Not a whole lot of D played in that first quarter… both teams shooting 50%
Yeah, uh, why aren’t we winning by 20 yet. Are they doing their first quarter warm up routine tonight?
Apparently… don’t think there’s a whole lot of intensity and it’s kinda hard to blame them…
Things that should never happen… Delly jacking up a three early in the shot clock…
Hush your mouth! Ignore the doubters Delly, chuck away. ;)
I’m okay with him being confident… just not brazen… ;)
I believe they call that “pluck” in Austrianianese
I think it was to go 2 for 1. Which they did — Shump scored with a couple seconds left.
Good point Phil… I’m okay with it now…
How can you play that many NBA games at center and have no low post moves?
Perk helping the Nets start the fast break…
Yeah… Shump’s hair definitely seems shorter…
That’s why he got blocked by the rim… again…
It’s not a flat-top tonight. Can’t tell if it’s a cut or just different styling. We’ll have to get Allie on the case.
Man, that was a BEAUTIFUL pass by Kyrie to Perk… he just couldn’t handle it…
Fred and AC talking about the Brew Garden spot…
Cavs pushing the ball, but the Nets pushing right back. Fast pace so far.
Shump looks like he cut his hair! Can anyone with a better view of the game confirm? My feed is blurry…
I think you’re right but haven’t seen a closeup yet to be sure.
Who’s guarding Joe Johnson?
No one puts their hand up. I think you’ve hit on something.
Bro-lo with an ugly push shot that goes somehow…
Plumlee tried to get on Kevin’s shoulders there…
Can’t let JJ shoot that shot uncontested…
Somehow Houdini nailed it!
Kyrie is MAGIC!
KLove with the nifty mid-ranger…
Torrid pace!
LBJ with the interception, the near fumble and then the handoff to Moz for the touchdow… I mean dunk
Going to be a great one tonight guys. I hope we see Kendrick and his scowl once the game is out of hand.
You never know… Blatt inserted Perk early last game…
Kyrie rocking the high socks…
LBJ misses the easy one… then puts down the hard one
KLove for three!
Bro-Lo with the bear hug move on Moz…
JR SWISH at the buzzer!
Watching the Mr. Hero ad with Andy makes me appreciate the Brew Garden commercials even more (no offense Andy!)
With Thad Young out… I don’t see how the Nets keep it within 20 unless Cavs decide not to care…
