Preview and Live Thread: Cavs at Bulls (Game 4)
2015-05-10News is that Pau Gasol will not play today after injuring his left hamstring in Game 3. They are calling it a “strain” which means he could be back in a game or two. The Bulls finally went to their bench in game 3 and Nikola Mirotic showed how dangerous he can be. He scored 12 points and grabbed eight boards in just 22 minutes. He was a game high +19. Obviously, losing Gasol hurts the Bulls, but the “small-ball” lineup of the Bulls is dangerous if only because it features a lot of streaky outside shooting in a series that has been mostly a half-court grindfest. I’m not sure I agree with the sentiments in these tweets that the Bulls will be “better” but they will present a different look that the Cavs need to be prepared for.

Jacob Rosen saved me some time:
Regular season and playoffs:
Cavs w/ Gasol on court: +27 in 221 mins (+5.86 per 48)
Cavs w/ Gasol on bench: -12 in 120 mins (-4.80 per 48)— Jacob L. Rosen (@JacobLRosen) May 10, 2015
The Cavs once again stand at the precipice of a chasm. It’s hard to see them beating the Bulls in three straight games, making this game somewhat of a “must-win”. However, if they split on the road they will have regained home court advantage and will be sitting pretty.
The key to the rest of the series is Kyrie Irving’s health and LeBron James’ offensive execution in the half-court. Both of these were severely lacking in game 3 and cost the Cavs the game (the Cavs bench played very well). Kyrie’s game has a chaos factor that can get buckets when nothing else is working, much like he did at times in game 1. Without that, the Cavs offense is predictable and relies on a lot of high screen and rolls with LeBron. Jimmy Butler is showing an increased acumen in defending these screens. He’s anticipating them and rarely getting picked. The Cavs “answer” to this was to have LeBron go mano-y-mano in the post. Unfortunately, LeBron’s been losing the handle as he tries to muscle his way into the low post.
Keep an eye out for Timofey Mozgov’s minutes in this game. The Cavs don’t seem to trust him out there. He’s fumbled away enough passes and had his shot blocked at the rim enough to understand why the Cavs are quick to pull the plug. Still, he offers rim protection. The Bulls swung the momentum in their favor in the 3rd quarter of game 3 with a series of breezy dribble-drives to the hoop.
Now Mozgov played the first half of this quarter so he was partly responsible for the carnage, but he will fare better in the long run at keeping the Bulls from turning the game into a layup line for Butler and Rose. Keyphrase: “long run”. Will Blatt stick with him after a few momentum changing turnovers? Or will he go with James Jones and TT.
According to @ESPNStatsInfo, the Cavs are a +25 this series in the 49 mins Thompson & Mozgov shared the court. Could exploit more w/ no Pau

These teams know each other and there is some chess to be played: will Blatt try to actually “go big” to exploit the loss of Gasol (and hope the Bulls play the severely struggling Joakim Noah) or will they call in an airstrike and run James Jones for heavy stretches at the 4?
Still, this series is being defined by the play of Rose, Butler, James, and Irving. Going into the series, you’d have given the edge to the Cavs. If Kyrie’s injuries hamper him as much as they did in game 3, it’s going to take a vintage LeBron performance to advance.
Kyrie just can’t buy one right now…
Limit Rose, Butler from getting to the paint and limit our turnovers and we should be fine
Wow the Bulls now look like the Warriors! Cavs need to defend better! They are over helping too much on defense
I might consider sitting Irving for the rest of the game. He can’t guard Rose at all. And when he’s not hitting shots it looks pretty ugly.
Does anyone understand why they don’t just run that play where they set a high pick for LBJ, and he drives with a head of steam basically every play that they don’t have a good rim protector in?
Delly is just looking way better than Kyrie right now on both ends of the floor and i don’t think anyone can deny that right now….team has got to limit turnovers and start getting consecutive stops
They need Delly, JR and Shump to all step up. None of those guys can be the primary ballhandler without getting exposed. But they can all do it in small doses.
Well, they survived. Only down two at the break despite a lot of rough edges.
Without the turnover barrage, they’re probably up by a half dozen…
Yep down two with all that I will take it! Gibson with 2 fouls time to attAck more.
Put Posey in so he can lay out Hinrich.
Great play delly
Love the Delly backdown on Brooks…
Noah clearly holding Shump.
And they don’t ever call it. I want to see Blatt going off soon on that crap
Another moving pick by noah
This is the type of game Chicago wants to play.
Noah with the uncalled travel… smh
LeBron… Pressing.
Gibson now with 2 fouls.
Get Gibson in foul trouble lets go!
TT is the Cavs’ best player right now.
Mozzy played well too
That’s what LeBron needs to do!
5 tos and we are down 2 come on tighten up
Why would you ever have JFJ try and guard Butler?
These ISO sets have to stop.
Lebron already has 4 turnovers of the Cavs 6..wowwww we ga get things together, we started off good but lately , just argh
Irving continues to look hobbled. LeBron continues to turn it over. If this continues game set match for the Bulls.
Kyrie still limited. When he tries to beat someone off the dribble, he’s only making one move, not his usual however-many-it-takes.
If this is Kyrie “stepping up” then I’m officially concerned…
kyrie needs to sit and put delly out there kyrie is showing no aggression to basket and is dribbling too much into corners
Ugh. That was painful.
Not looking good!
Love what Thompson’s been giving the Cavs, but any time he has intentions of trying to score I have to close my eyes.
LBJ’s handle problems continue… that was a terrible transitional break there…
Can they ever call Noah on his picks.
Chicagos D is tight.
Check the Ball inflation?
Argh.
Too much damn turnovers
Who hasn’t had a turnover yet. Let’s get everyone involved.
LeBron trying to be a leader!
Kyrie looks so incapable out there. Wow.
4 turnovers in a row by LeBron/Irving.
Bron should know by now that he can’t dribble in the paint anymore…
On that last Lebron drive, it seemed like he had the step, I thought he might dunk, then suddenly he’s going for a layup and 3 guys are converging and he’s kicking out to shump. Would really like to see LeBron wear down the Bulls bigs. Get them in foul trouble.
Not been this nervous for a game since 2007. Come on!!!!!!
Not even 2009?
these kyrie mid range jumpers aren’t helping he’s gotta drive all the way to hoop and gain some confidence
Driving on a bad foot isn’t going to get it done though. His best bet to help is getting his jumper going.
Yeah he would probably draw the foul or be able to dump it if he went a little further
This game looks a lot like the last game.
Moz picked up three guys on D last time.
Cavs recovering well on D so far…
Good defense so far
Cavs playing pretty well so far. Bulls trying to draw fouls on Moz
this is best start by Mozgov all series on both ends…love it!
Don’t have to make the home run pass every time, King.
Kyrie still looks like he’s hurting…
Noah can only shoot off the glass… his shot is so ugly…
Back door mozzy
Moz aggressive!
Rose trying to get to the line early this game…
Moz can’t get those fouls.
Looked like he went straight up, but on the replay he might have gone forward… although so did Rose…
Mozzy w block and slam
They really need to sign Shump in the off-season…
MOZ!!!!!!!!!!! IF HE DIES!!!!!
That was MOZ-some!
Shump and great defense so far
SHUMP!
Get in the paint!
Moz-Block on Rose…
LeBron’s going to try to get his jumper going today. He needs another weapon
No Head band, Yo!
I think jr is going off today, this is his time as well.
According to Terry Pluto:
Officials for today’s game:
Scott Foster, lead: 111 playoffsm\ 12 Finals, 20 years experience
Tom Washington: 116 playoffs, 4 Finals, 23 years.
Jason Phillips: 39 playoffs, 2 Finals, 14 years
Q looks nearly filled for the watch party (as seen on pre-game show on FSO).
My mom says Cavs will get a win on Mother’s Day…
LET’S GO CAVS!
Mothers rule! Jalen is so full of it, another reason I want this series.
I believe in a team win with a huge game by Lebron, but everyone is going to have big plays. Home court will be held! Cavs 102 bulls 98
