Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls, Game 6
2015-05-14If the Cavs win tonight, they will see the conference Finals for the first time since the 2008-2009 season. If they lose, the Wine & Gold will play their first game seven in the playoffs since the 2007-2008 season, a game they lost. Either way, this game is going to lead to some flashbacks of sorts for most Cavalier fans.
This game comes down to guys playing the positions they are assigned to on the floor and the positions their physical gifts dictate. And, I mean playing those positions like they were played before guys other than point guards and shooting guards dribbled the ball up the court.
Kyrie Irving needs to dribble up the court because he is a point guard, and LeBron James needs to work in the post, set screens, and cut to the rim because he’s a small forward with the strength of a power forward or center. That game plan works for the Cavaliers. They won game five because the King returned to his rightful throne down by the hoop.
John Krolik summed it up perfectly in his recap when discussing LeBron’s first-half foray to the block:
I’ll do the math for you: That’s 16 points out of the post (I’m counting his fake-post drive as a post-up), 4 on the break, 2 working off the ball, and just two off the dribble-drive, with exactly none many of his points coming on ISO drives to the basket or deep pull-up jumpers. It’s beautiful. It’s just a beautiful thing to watch LeBron perform at his peak, and it came when the Cavs needed it most.
Just look at these game five LeBron highlights:

Now, go back to the 49 second mark where LeBron is backing down Jimmy Butler. LeBron’s first dribble on his backdowns is among the most powerful in the league. Butler is send reeling backwards from the brunt force of it and has to foul. If the Bulls throw a larger player onto the King, well, their chests better be made of steel because LeBron’s shoulder is gonna leave a mark.
Irving also did stuff elite point guards do like dishing out five assists and scoring 25 points while shooting 50% from 3-point land. He also made all three of his basket attempts at the rim. In his previous two games combined, Irving registered just two assists and 23 points. He is still powering through some left knee tendinitis and a right foot strain, but he’s dealing with it quite well:
“This is the most I’ve done just to prepare for one game in my whole entire career,” Irving said, referring to every game in this series. “But I feel pretty good. A lot of icing, a lot of treatment, doing what I need to do. I woke up feeling all right.” [Jason Lloyd]
If the Cavs can play positional ball again tonight for sustained stretches, they will get the win. David Blatt and the rest of the team most likely realizes this fact. They spent Wednesday doing film review instead of practicing. If the team doesn’t realize where the King is most effective, then something is very wrong. I’m predicting the Cavs pull off a close one, 103-97.
Pau Gasol returns tonight for the Bulls, but Bulls writer Sam Smith is reporting Gasol took part in only a light practice on Wednesday and didn’t attempt to jump during that time.
What’s Thompson’s status? Does JR seem tentative or is it just me? Been passing on some shots, then didn’t take it to the hole we he just threw it away…..(note: not panicking. we got this)
I hope they eject him so tthe whole thing does not escalate again. We can afford zero injuries.
Ohoh let the cheapiness begin! Is time for the Cavs to take advantage of that and attack the rim since the refs should be calling the everything now.
What the heck was that, and then why was he trying to talk crap after he hit him? Play the game, you’re a rookie, you haven’t done anything…
Seriously. He was squawking at LeBron a game or two ago.
Jesus what the hell is Mirotic doing? Bushleague. Thats some Olynyk-level lashing out
The Cavs obviously bring out some sore feelings in their opponents. Both this series and the Celtics’ series got real chippy the longer they went.
Kyrie showing LOADS of heart.
So dirty! He should get tossed!
Should be a flagrant 1 on Mirotic.
They will be afraid to toss him but he really should be gone. No foot movement and throwing shoulder into neck? With the way the Bulls are playing us that is plenty to get him tossed
DELLY!!! I love it. They hate him so much.
DELLY TREY!
I hate Miro-Female dog!
Ok I guess I am completely full of shit.
Kyrie jogging on way back out of tunnel
I imagine in this case that must feel good.
It feels great. Then again, I imagine most politicians feel good most days.
Irving is probable to come back in game.
JAMES FREAKING JONES IS ON!
Whelp. It’s gone from 2010 Cavs and now without Irving we are 2007 Cavs. Can James do it?
We need to win tonight the worst way to buy some days of rest for KI and Shump.
Hope Kyrie can gut it out once more.
That was an achiles injury. There goes the playoffs.
DUDE! Don’t EVER say stuff like that!
What makes you say that?
He didn’t turn the ankle. That was a snap.
Not even his ankle, he was holding his knee.
Confirmed left knee…
You really need to stop playing couch doctor man. It was the knee and they are re-wrapping it.
oh oh with Kyrie, lets hope its not serious.
Wow. Terrible luck.
We have a 2 point lead with little from James. TT, JFJ, Kyrie and Mozgov picking up the slack.
TT owned that first quarter. I am so glad he didn’t get majorly hurt on that last play and so confused as to why teams aren’t ready for delly to TT alley oop
They need to find a way to slow down DRose. They usually do, but I’m just saying. Kyrie should not be guarding him… probably at all..
TT playing like vintage LBJ fouling suckas out left and right!
Dunleavy is such a sneaky dirty dirty player.
I wish my boy Giannis had done a better job tackling him.
That was a scary fall for TT on th replay. I really don’t like when guys play out of control in the Offs…
How did TT just bounce up from that?! Really scary fall……….phew…
Tristan with 10 points!!!! Holy Toledo!
dont even know how that ball went in
TT unreal………………..
HOLY UPSIDE DOWN CAKE!!
Nicely done………….
A Dunleavy flop!!!!
JAMES FREAKING JONES!
James Jones hitting some big shots early.
Txt has heard the cash register ringing.
TT MY HEROOOOO I love it
TT in beast mode! And 1! And 3 fouls on Gibson.
WOW DOUBLE T!!!
Bulls are getting exactly what they want on offense so far.
offensively we are doing a good job too and it would certainly help if Noah was called for a defensive 3 second violation (or four) since he s camped in the paint for the duration ofJames holding a basketball.
Well it seems we got the not aggressive enough version of LeBron today.
Noah letting the bun down makes me thinks he is auditioning for game of thrones.
Irving looks a little quicker tonight
LBJ has done nothing so far…
He is putting on an impressive brick laying clinic.
Pebbles hits the deck.
our transition defense sucks right now
as I said that, Dunleavy hits a transition 3
I like how Mozqov is playing right now
Ok. Let’s get smith some open looks.
Still poor transition D.
Mozzy needs to get some bigs in foul trouble.
LBJ looks kinda stiff. Hope it’s not the ankle. Maybe he’s saving it for later.
TT with the ill-advised Earl Monroe impression again tonight.
So that was a good timeout by Blatt.
Now they just need to recall what they did to shut down Gasol earlier in the series.
Cavs playing really sloppy to start, of course. I am pretty sure that Game 2 was the only game they came out sharp, correct?
I believe so too
Pau GaFlop!!!!!!!!!!!!
He certainly seemed to still be moving on that “charge”
No kidding. Not only were his feet moving, but he fell over like a redwood tree.
Quick shots and transition defense are a bit shaky
Timo playing like ass. Biggest guy on the court and he’s shrinking like George out of the pool.
Well, Gasol really giving them that lift early
I don’t think he lost contact with the floor on that put back dunk…
Paul Gasol was still moving , wow
wish I had gotten mine ( black also ) would be WEARING AND SHARING THE VIBES —–RIP LAUREN HILL !!!
The GoGardenClub is taking over…
My son Elliott will wear the red when it arrives. Miles wanted the gold and he insists that is for the next series
Got my black C:tB shirt in the mail today! Wearing it tonight!
#CtBKarma!
I have to fly thru Chicago tomorrow and Sunday. Thinking of wearing CAVS gear.
There isn’t a single person affiliated with ESPN even remotely considering the Cavs as winning.
I’m not sure why that is. LeBron and Kyrie just played well and I can’t see them taking a step back after finally warming up .
192.5 give me the over
Do or do not, there is no try
The Cavs players should see this game as a great test because of the chance of putting away their opponent…..good playoff opponent.
Use it as motivation and look at this as a challenge from which they can grow up as a team and that can help them for the up coming rounds.
Let’s hope they approach this game with the killer mentality.
I agree and tonight is definitely not a good time for doing that.
Try to weather the storm and then hit them hard.
Let’s go Cavs!
Apparently 2 native Chicago referees will be officiating this game tonight. A little odd?
Oh lawd, looking like a game 7 then
I don’t think that means too much. These refs are fairly vetted.
I’m so nervous for this game, want us start off the game good these pass for games we tend to start off slow
