Live Thread: Cavs vs. Grizzlies (Pre-Season)
2015-10-12Pre-season basketball might be boring and borderline unnecessary to some, but to the extended fanbases in cities that don’t get to see NBA basketball on the regular, it presents a tremendous opportunity to get involved in the action. And, not only by witnessing what happens on the hardwood, but also experiencing the unique community interactions that accompany these games. Yesterday, for instance, the Cavs continued their #AllforOhio tour in Columbus, hosting a basketball clinic for local students, before preparing to face off with the Memphis Grizzlies at The Schottenstein Center’s Value City Arena, tonight at 7pm EST.
On hand for the Cavs were roster guarantees Matthew Dellavedova and Joe Harris, along with most all of the training camp invitees vying for a spot on the 15 man roster, including: Quinn Cook, Jared Cunningham, Austin Daye, Chris Johnson, Nick Minnerath and DJ Stephens. The players guided the kids through various ball handling, shooting and defensive drills, and even Cavs’ mascot, Sir C.C., stopped by to help entertain.
Although the message of this ongoing tour is “We Are All Cavaliers,” it remains to be seen which of these guys will actually be able to say that when the pre-season comes to a close. For a progress report thus far, check out Mike’s in-depth piece. How they perform against a fairly deep Memphis team should continue to clarify the outlook of their chances, especially with both Mo Williams (rest) and J.R. Smith (left hamstring soreness) sitting out tonight (along with KLove, Kyrie, Shump and he who shall not be named). According to reports, Smith sustained the injury in practice a few days before the preseason opener in Cincinnati. He was held out of the game in Philadelphia on Thursday and hasn’t practiced since.
“It’s not a serious injury but on the other hand, it’s a tricky thing that you really have to be cautious about and that’s what we’ve been doing,” Cavs coach David Blatt said. “We haven’t pressed it and we haven’t pushed it.”
The probable starting lineup for the Cavs is: Matthew Dellavedova, Joe Harris, LeBron James, James Jones and Timofey Mozgov.
While the Grizzlies’ should counter with a probable starting lineup of: (former Buckeye) Mike Conley, Tony Allen, Jeff Green, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol.
Meanwhile, as Delly, Joe and the training campers were practicing with the kids, across town, LeBron, on the heels of becoming the official spokesman for Blaze Pizza, treated several other veteran Cavs to some hot pies at the Columbus Blaze location on High Street near the OSU campus. J.R. Smith, Mo Williams and James Jones were the beneficiaries of the deliciousness.
Only right that I come to Columbus and enjoy a great pie @BlazePizza!! Love it. Thanks for the hospitality guys. pic.twitter.com/fJT76gsEkp

If you can’t make it to Columbus for the game, you can check out the action on Fox Sports Ohio, or WTAM 1100.
GO CAVS!
Cookin!
Quinn Flick-a-tha-Wrist!!!!
LOVE IT—-DO YOU THINK IF THEY DECIDE NOT TO KEEP DAYE / COOK THAT THEY WOULD ACCEPT A D-LEAGUE CONTRACT OR BOLT TO THE EURO LEAGUE—-WOULD LIKE TO KEEP BOTH OF THSE GUYS AROUND / STILL THINK I WOULD KEEP DAYE OVER SMOKIN JOE
I doubt Daye would go to the D-League.
Daye aint going D league but cook might and probably will
All Daye for three!
He promptly pulls the chair out on D…
Austin Daye in the game…
JFJ not at all happy with the Ryan Hollins shoulder…
Ryan Hollins doing Ryan Hollins things.
JAMES FREAKING JONES!!!
FYI… I recommend not typing “danger ninja” into your search engine… NSFW…
Unless you are a federal employee
Cook needs to do that more often… he can hit that shot…
Jefferson… movin on up!
Ninja’s gotta watch that lead elbow…
LIKE HIS GAME AND OVERALL BASKETBALL I.Q. —IF HE CAN IMPROVE ON HIS OUTSIDE SHOT HE COULD BE A REAL NICE PICK UP
Memphis shoots all their shots from the one long 2 area teams don’t defend and it’s looking great.
Beware…
DAMN Danger Ninja is viscous. Turned on the nitro there. He wants that spot so badly.
Man, Gasol and Randolph are both nearly automatic with the long twos…
Lot of fouls…
DANGER NINJA!!!!!
MUCH DANGER NINJA!!!!
Loved the back cut action find by AV to Danger Ninja for the easy jam… The Ninja strikes when you least expect him!
Moz just can’t get out and cover Randolph on the perimeter…
LBJ throws the hammer down!
Grizz playing with intensity to start second half…
Preseason games drive me nuts. Annoyed the Cavs are losing, but also know that they are without half their rotation while a strong Grizzlies team is pretty much full strength.
Yeah, you can’t really read a whole lot into the first half. Interested to see who stands out in the second half amongst the 15th spot hopefuls. Telling that Cook and Danger Ninja were the only two to see minutes with the front lines in the first half…
Cavs can lose all the Preseason games… Get the losses out of their system.
Kind of feel like Kaun will be better than a lot of fourth bigs, and waaaay better than most fifth bigs when Tristan signs.
Agree… as soon as he starts to feel more confidence in his offense, he’ll be even better…
Amazes me how good Randolph is at what he does…
Cavs do not make a bucket in final two minutes and give up 3 offensive boards to the Griz. 7-1 run is the result.
Rough shooting half… Cavs shoot better from three (38.5%) than field (33.3%)… Weird…
Have a good night EG. do your best not to nod off in the second half.
That will never happen… as long as Much Danger Ninja is in the building…
Have a good night, Joey B!
Kaun fighting inside with Gasol for boards… I like it!
Needed that three from Bron… Cavs were getting a bit stagnant…
Mo did a pretty good job with the play-by-play…
Man, I think I prefer no preseason, as much as I miss basketball. It just makes me more anxious for the real games. Just get me to January with everyone signed and back from injury, whatever trade finalized, and we can’t start our preseason tune up then to prepare for the playoffs.
Pre-season is always tricky… but without it, guys probably just aren’t ready…
I know, but that’s what the regular season is for. At least, in the East.
We could start 5-15 and make the playoffs without breaking a sweat. Are pre-seaon last till MLK day
Love listening to Mo… class act
They should do one of those pepsi commercials with VC and RJ but not have them do make up. Just see if anyone recognizes them anymore.
We need a like button
Interesting first half stat: Varejao, Cunninham, and JFJ are 0-4 from the field but 8-8 from the line.
RJ’s shot looks pretty good tonight…
RJ guarding VC is the very definition of old guy pickup game at the Y…
I would pay to watch that pickup game.
As would about 15K at the Value City Arena…
Sexy stepping by the King.
Nice post move by LBJ…
I’m really looking forward to this season from him. He’s going to begin the transition that all great players make of adapting his game as the athleticism starts to fade. He’s so smart and still so skilled. I think his efficiency will be through the roof this year.
Hits his free throws, but
Can’t drive left. Player fifteen?
Much Danger Ninja.
Ouch. Grizz injury alert…
I’m telling you, sit everyone. Play the water boy if you have to. Injuries are the only thing that derails a championship.
Mo on the broadcast now…
Where is the danger ninja name from?
Also, during one of the blow outs this year we have to have an all hot takes comment section.

There’s a lot of great anagrams. Here’s a few promising options:
Charmed Ninja Gun
Charming Jade Nun
Arch Unmanned Jig
And my favorite:
Much Danger Ninja
From recap of last game re: Cunningham
Part of an anagram for Jared Cunningham…
Methinks we should do Hakuis for all the anagrams of players that make the roster.
How is VC still in the league? Isn’t he like 50 by now?
Yikes. Some ugly basketball to end the quarter. Okay, no injuries so far. Let’s rest 1-10 and let the bench have at it.
I wonder if Matt Barnes and Tony Allen will brawl at all this season?
Only if he’s as dumb as D Fish…
Weird seeing Matt Barnes in a Grizz jersey…
Danger Ninja playing hard on defense…
Башни-близнецы
(thank you, Google Translate!)
Cavs offense is doing what it’s supposed to so far. Memphis is just great at cutting off the open shots off ball swings. And, Andy is looking spry. Great d on Gasol so far.
Here comes danger ninja
Enter Danger Ninja!
@kpelton: Sasha Kaun playing with Timofey Mozgov. What’s Russian for “Twin Towers”?
Bashni-bliznetsy
Doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, does it? How about a “Vodka Double”?
Glasnost and Perestroika?
Iron Curtains?
Hammer and Sickle?
Moscow Wall? Brothers K?
Hmmmm: Cavs on 6-2 run since Smokin Joe entered the game for LBJ. LBJ finished? Age finally catching up with him? Joe Harris the next NBA superstar? Brian Windhorst discusses the end of the LBJ era in Cleveland.
Well played Joey B…
Smokin Joe finally nails one!
The Grindfather just ate RJ’s lunch…
Cavs getting very little lane penetration…
The Cavs look as excited to play this game as I was to exercise after work tonight.
Chill mode: activated.
Moz working his three point range, just like Anthony Davis.
LBJ’s stepback 21 foot 2 pointer is in midseason form.
TT has to like Z-bo starting 3 for 3.
Who?
Some dude used to play for us. He starts for the Ding-dong Dragon Riders in China now.
Tougher to get the same level of ball movement against a tough defensive team like Memphis…
Anderson Varejao has totally reinvented himself. Used to be all D, no O, now the opposite.
I don’t know if it’s the opposite… he’s hustling out there. Gasol is a tough cover…
Be that as it may, Varejao’s days as a defensive stopper are over. He has really worked on his offense and is reliable under the hoop and jumpers to 15 – 18 feet.
I don’t know if he was ever a “defensive stopper.” His game has always been energy and agitation. He’s never been a rim protector…
True enough – he was like Delly. But he has slowed and I think it hurts his ability to defend at the level he once did.
His Year with Byron Scott was when he really made the leap on offense. If he stayed healthy he would have been a top 5 center that year. Running the point center he was awesome. He would drive the lane 3 times a game it seemed and the offense ran through him while he was at the highpost top of the key area.
Great pass by RJ to Moz
AV with the steal and the footrace with Gasol to the other end…
RJ starting at SG and AV starting at PF…
Is something different going on with Allie Cliftons hair?
As long as its not like Klove’s hair. That perm is a tragedy.
@DavidZavac: Imagine Cavs had a 24 year old top 60 player that played 41 mins a game in the Finals represented by LeBron and couldn’t get a deal done.
Not sure what his point is?
I think he’s joking.
@mcten: Rich Paul is here for the Cavs game in Columbus. David Griffin is also here. Let’s say we get a deal ironed out at halftime. Yeah, fellas?
