Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls
2015-10-27LeBron James lost a grueling six game Finals, with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love both unavailable due to injury. In the following weeks, he sat at a pool with Love and decided it would be best for both of them if he re-signed with the Cavs. He then cringed when J.R. Smith opted out of his contract and came back for slightly less money. He even lobbied for the Cavs to re-sign Tristan Thompson using social media. His lobbying was as passive aggressive as a significant other saying, “sure, you can watch this preseason game because it makes you happy, even though it’s completely pointless.” And, he sat on a banana boat with Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. The King did all of those things in just four short months and has to be feeling ready for opening night.
After just 48 minutes of preseason action, and one anti-inflammatory back injection, the King returns with his men to play real NBA basketball against the Chicago Bulls in under eight hours. The game tips off at 8:00 PM in the United Center, and can be seen on TNT.
The Bulls will be trotting out Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler, Tony Snell, Nikola Mirotic, and Pau Gasol. Joakim Noah will be their super in shape sixth man, and Mike Dunleavy will warm the bench after having back surgery this offseason. Rose will be wearing a face mask.
The Cavs are starting Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love, and Timofey Mozgov. Both Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert will not be available for this game.
Staff predictions:
Ben Werth: Cavs 110, Bulls 100. Kevin Love starts his All-Star season by humiliating the Bulls overrated frontline. Chicago already misses Thibs.
Nate Smith: Cavs 106, Bulls 102. Bulls try to prove something. Kevin Love proves they can’t defend like they did under Thibs.
EvilGenius: Cavs 97, Bulls 91. LeBron’s sore back outlasts D-Rose’s broken face as Cavs start out strong on their quest for a championship.
Mike Schreiner: Bulls 101, Cavs 96. Lack of time playing together in the preseason hurts them, but it’s nothing to worry about.
Robert Attenweiler: Cavs 92, Bulls 86. The rested and mostly reunited Cavs give Chicago a taste of its own defensive-minded medicine, allowing their offense plenty of time to shake the rust off. And there is definitely rust to be shaken.
David Wood: Cavs 95, Bulls 88. Love demands a double team at the elbow, and the Cavs are able to hit their open 3s. Matthew Dellavedova accidentally hits D. Rose in the face and the game gets scrappy.
Stuff to watch for this game:
1. Is Tristan Thompson in basketball shape? He just reported to training camp this past Friday after signing a deal worth $82 million over five years.
2. Will LeBron be on a minutes restriction? It’s never good to get shots in your back.
3. How many times does Love touch the ball in the paint? He had 2.9 elbow touches and 4 post touches a game last season. The prior season in Minnesota he had 11.6 elbow touches and 7.4 post touches a night. The team has said they want him to be more than a perimeter threat this season.
4. Is Chicago going to be an offensive minded team this year? Fred Hoiberg is an offensive minded coach, but it will be interesting to see what the Bulls do if they can’t run their offensive sets against the Cavs. Do they keep trying to or do they resort to playing lockdown defense?
5. Can Tony Snell be the quasi LeBron stopper still? During the regular season last year, Snell slowed James dramatically. James must have mistaken Tony for Kawhi Leonard.
Let us know your predictions for the game below.
Moz seems to have some rust caked on his hands.
Cavs plus 9 on the glass.
If Rose is gonna jack up threes, Mo should have no problems guarding him…
Liking the movement and passing so far…
WOW!!! Love finding LBJ for the reverse oop!
That was very pretty
JAM REBEL SON!!!
Yeah take that Obama!
MOZ there for the cleanup!
Lebron looks springy tonight.
Ok. It is really weird to see Mo and LeBron together again.
Darn. There goes the season-long shutout.
Well, we can still go 82-0
Cavs starting off well.
LBJ up and over Butler!
Love is gonna eat mirotic alive down low. He doesn’t stand a chance.
First bucket… dunk by Love!
Nice D!
ARE…..YOU…..READY???????
Ugh. Reggie. Mute button coming. Wonder if I can sync this with Jim Chones.
Oh good… Reggie Miller…
We’ve got Marv and Reggie.
Westbrook commercials are awesome!
That was pretty hilarious….
THREE MINUTES TO BASKETBALL!!!!
It’s probably like 10 minutes.
This guy looks like a bald bearded Jim from the office. Jim sings better though.
He’s got nothin on John Popper on the harmonica too…
A bald, bearded Jim. So nothing like Jim at all.
Similar brow lines…
@CJ12_: @JoakimNoah watch yo mouth before I give you these hands chump
Cardale might not be my pick for starting QB but I LOVE it when he trash talks pebbles.
Drinking wine tonight for the Wine and Gold. I almost wish I had a gold chalice to drink it out of.
Classy! Love it JMay!
Beer is too rough on my stomach anymore. Figured this way I could have a drink AND support my team haha
TNT couldn’t come up with anyone better than the X Ambassadors?
So bad, I had to mute it. My goodness
I finally had to when the harmonica solo kicked in…
I muted during the Steph interview lol didn’t even wait for X Ambassadors.
They should have Phil Lesh jamming instead of this band.
Kenny just LOVES to hate on the Cavs…
He did pick the Cavs to win tonight though.
True… but he loves to say that a healthy Kyrie and KLove wouldn’t have changed the outcome in the Finals…
I know. Whatever Kenny!
Kenny’s job on that show is to chime in to give Chuck something to make fun of him about.
And to race Shaq to the back wall in studio…
Kenny is delusional. He is equating Playoff LBJ with reg season LBJ
Also, once we got everyone back in the second half of the season we WERE a great team. He’s ridiculous.
Chuck basically said the Dubs got lucky with the Cavs injuries.
I don’t see that front court lasting.
I think they will bring Pau off the bench later on, and start Mirotic/Noah.
EG, are you eating up this Steph interview? He’s your boy, since you drafted him!!!
UGH… don’t remind me… I regret picking him already…
20 Minutes to Basketball!!!
THIS IS A GREAT OMEN MY LOCAL BEVERAGE STORE JUST STOCKED GREAT LAKES CHRISTMAS ALE —-GOT ME A CASE —LET THE SEASON BEGIN !!!
Does anyone use Fan Duel or Draft Kings, and if so did you win a ship load of money?

Adam Silver should grow a goatee so he doesn’t resemble an alien so much…
It’s crazy how much taller he is than David Stern. Reminds me of Penn and Teller.
Chuck says the Hawks won’t win 50 games…
I think they get close to 50.
It’s the EC… they’ll probably still win 50
Chuck has the Knicks making the playoffs….
I know Chuck likes to gamble… and I would enjoy taking his money on that prediction… Melo is traded at the deadline is more likely…
Yeah, I’ve heard that too.
Chuck says he thinks the Bucks could upset the Cavs…
As a sleeper team…. Meaning “one in a million” talk.
So you’re saying there’s a chance?
Chuck has Bucks as sleeper to beat Cavs in East.
I actually think Bucks can make it to ECF.
Not unless they trade for some shooting or a better PG…
Their PG play is awful. Remember when MCW won the ROY?
C’mon… he’s terrible.
Yeah I don’t disagree. I didn’t state it to argue he was good.
Ya. The East is kind of up in the air since the Hawks probably won’t repeat and the Bucks are young, they have the Greek Freak, and a (presumably) healthy Parker. Who knows?
Chuck going with Jazz and Bucks as his “sleeper” teams…
Oh Kenny… it didn’t take long to jam your foot in your mouth…
Chuck picking OKC to win it all this year….
Barkley picks OKC to win it all.
They’re having doughnuts on TNT… which makes me nostalgic for Delonte… “betta have my doughnuts”
That was an awesome Jim Rome is Burning segment.
Thinking about Delonte makes me nostalgic for Delonte.
“Hands Down, Mans Down”
Isn’t that Mark Jackson?
After Delonte hit a game winner a number of years ago in the Playoffs after a Lebron assist, he was interviewed after the game. That’s what he said. I remember it vividly because it’s the first time I (and all of my friends in our senior year at the time) heard Delonte speak.
Okay, gotcha!!!!!!
Agreed. He was my favorite during LBJ 1.0.
It’s funny they’re doing the show in SF, when Oakland is the City that won.
They couldn’t be outside at night in Oakland…
So annoying to listen to how Bob Myers “put the team together” in Golden State…
Season Opener! So obviously, this is the most important game of the season. If we lose, the season is over. God forbid, if we get off to a bad start to the season? No team has ever made it to the Finals after going 19-20 to start…oh wait
Regardless, it’s great to have Cleveland basketball back! It’s Delly Time!
It’s only the most important game of the season in that it starts the season off… It’s exciting, but it doesn’t mean much other than the return of basketball…
Which is reason enough to be excited!
Seriously, this has been a long time coming after last year’s Finals. Even though the individual games might not amount to much, we are still living and dying with each possession change. Haven’t felt this excited for Cavs basketball since last season (and before that…the first LeBron era). Those middle years really made all of us appreciate how good it feels to have a great basketball team for our city. Time to enjoy the hell out of it!
Amen!
Nate’s favorite GM Bob Myers is with the TNT gang.
As much as I can’t stand the Warriors right now, San Francisco is an awesome city
TNT Tip Off has started!!!
60 Minutes to BASKETBALL!!!!!!
@NateSilver538: Beyond Cleveland, the East is a mess (even more than usual). We actually have the Celtics projected for a 2-seed. https://t.co/Hhrc8aZ879
LOL! Celtics??
Yeah I don’t get the Celtics love.
I think they’re better than last year, and the ended last year playing very well.
They’re not the second best team in the EC though…. They’re a team full of Forwards for crying out loud!
@mcten: Music blasting in the Cavs’ locker room pregame: “Phenomenal” by Eminem
The dude is ripped
@NateSilver538: Just in the Knick of time, here are our final NBA standings projections, adjusting for strength of schedule. https://t.co/zQXMBCeFtl
Has the Cavs and Warriors in the finals again.
I love that this thread is already up. Can’t contain my excitement!
Clippers’ TNT quest ad is kinda awesome…
Numbers for tonight:
CHI favored by 4.5, with o/u @ 197.5. Smart money on CHI, and the over.
I’ll take CHI 102-97. CHI will play this game like it means the world, CLE won’t empty the clip to win the 1st game of the year, kinda the same way ATL v. CLE worked out last year. But the President’s appearance makes me nervous about this pick HAHA!
TeamSwish… GO TIME!
Less than 90 minutes to basketball!!!
Cavs blow them away
Bulls can never compete with James
Yeesh. When will we learn this lesson.
I agree with Cols! I think the Cavs have been waiting for months to take the finals loss out on someone. LBJ is always better on the road. I think this team is pissed off and determined to scorch the earth. We win by 15+
TOSS UP COULD AGREE WITH EVIL’S PICK OR MIKE’S PICK—JUST THINK THAT THERE ARE SO MANY QUESTIONS FOR BOTH TEAMS ( LEBRON’S BACK / T.T. IN SHAPE / ROSE’S HEALTH / NEW COACH NEW- CONCEPT ETC . / 1ST GAME JITTERS ATMOSPHERE ) WON’T PUT A WHOLE LOT OF STOCK IN EITHER RESULT WIN OR LOSE JUST GLAD / EXCITED THAT IT IS BASKETBALL / CAVS TIME AGAIN —8 MONTHS WITH MY CTB BROTHERS TRYING TO ” COACH ‘ SUPPORT THE CAVS TO AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP !!
