Live Thread: Cavs vs. Sixers
2015-11-06Just six games into the regular season (thanks to injury and opportunity) the Cavs have apparently decided to “release the Ninja” on the Philadelphia 76ers in tonight’s matchup at the Q. According to Jason Lloyd at the Akron Beacon Journal, Jared Cunningham (aka Much Danger Ninja) reportedly appears to be in line for his first NBA start. Cunningham was wearing a red starter’s jersey during the team’s morning shoot-around, while Richard Jefferson was back in a bench player’s white jersey. Although, technically, as a ninja… MDN probably should have dressed in all black…
Jefferson started in Wednesday’s win against the Knicks, but he seemed a little out of sorts, getting off to a rough start on his way to nine points on 2-6 shooting (1-5 from three), with four boards and three assists. Most of this might be attributed to the fact that he was tasked with guarding Carmelo Anthony on the other end of the floor (which he did with some degree of success), yet it’s understandable why Coach Blatt would prefer to keep him in his usual role, given how well that’s gone so far this season.
Cunningham is averaging just 4.2 points, and shooting 50 percent from the floor, in about 10 minutes of play per game. He’s been an early sub off of the bench for Blatt, mainly because of his athleticism and his ability to defend well. Clearly, his assertiveness in limited opportunities has already paid dividends.
“I feel comfortable (in the Cavs’ system), it’s just a little bit different,” Cunningham said. “This is the first time I’ve gotten consistent minutes.”
Before finding a home with the Cavs, MDN was the very definition of an NBA journeyman. He’s been with five teams in his four years as a pro, playing in a total of 58 games with the Mavericks, Clippers, Hawks, Kings and now Cavs.
Lloyd got this quote from Cunningham fan and Mavs coach, Rick Carlisle, last month when the Cavs played Dallas in the preseason.
“He has NBA ability, there’s no doubt about it,” Carlisle said. “He has NBA skill, he just needs to find a niche. This is one of those situations where it could work out for him because he’s a terrific shooter, he’s got dynamic athleticism, he can defend and he’s playing with some great players here. He’s playing with the greatest player and oftentimes a situation like that helps guys like him stick around.”
We’ll see if MDN can help the Cavs get off to a faster start than they have in their two previous games. One thing that won’t be slowing them down are the now infamous sleeved jerseys from Wednesday’s game, as the Cavs will return to their sleeveless white uniforms for tonight’s tilt.
The Cavs will also look to continue their run on assists (they’ve averaged 25.8 per game), and of holding their opponents under 45% shooting. The Cavaliers are also limiting teams to 92.4 points per 100 possessions after allowing 104.1 in 2014-15 to rank 20th. That doesn’t bode well for the still winless Sixers squad which is averaging only 88.3 points on 39.9 percent shooting. The Cavs also finished them off on Monday, despite digging themselves a large hole to start. However, Philly has been the only team to hit the century mark against Cleveland, and with a promising front line, they can still be dangerous.
Other things to look for tonight:
- LeBron needs three made field goals to each 9,000 for his career. That would make him just 20th player in league history to reach that number.
- Tristan Thompson leads all NBA reserves in rebounds at 10.2 per game. He’s five offense rebounds shy of passing Phil Hubbard for seventh on the Cavs’ all-time list.
- Mo Williams is averaging 21.5 points on 55 percent shooting over the last two games. He should continue his hot streak against the likes of Isaiah Canaan and T.J. McConnell.
- LeBron hit just his second triple in 18 attempts on Wednesday. Will he keep firing away from deep, or work the ball inside with his post-game?
- The Cavs unleashed “The KRAKEN” against the Knicks… could we see it again tonight?
Game time is 7:30pm (EST), and the game can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio, and heard on 1100 WTAM. So, get your katanas out, Cavs fans… and get ready to flip the switch…
DAMN, That Dunk off of the Klove hustle, LOVEEE!!!
Daaaannnnnngggggg! He was pissed about that missed free throw
HOLY SUPERMAN!!! I had to rewind that dunk on my DVR!!!
I LOVE it when the Cavs push the ball up the floor!
Little further out for that turnaround J for Bron…
Andy’s jumper is $$$ these days….
three years now.
Jerami Grant is such a flopper…
Like father… like son…
hehehe. Still like him. :p
Okafor looks much more underwhelming tonight.
Delly is not a pull up shooter, excepting his floater. stick to spot ups, Delly.
Nice play by the Wombat…
Has anyone talked about LeBrons stache?
He’s reportedly keeping it for Mo-vember…
Figured that but I don’t recall him doing this in other seasons.
Delly looks is shape!
11 Cavs players saw the court in quarter 1, and that happened with 3 players out. crazy
McConnell is a nice find for this Sixers team… Im sure he’ll get traded by mid-season…
Joe Harris needs to knock a couple big ones down here
Chokin’ Joe sighting… where’d I put my voodoo doll…
A lot of midrange shots by guys who are better at draining threes.
Btw I loved Cols Delly rant from yesterday. That was good stuff.
Would definitely like to see more extra passes in the 2nd…no need for all these high degree of diff shots in the paint
@JasonLloydABJ: Tristan Thompson headed to locker room to get cut above eye closed up
Posted above…
In heaven???????
LOL… in the thread…
Good start. Easy to see there’s no way we’re going to go off slow again like the last two
They didn’t show how McConnell got the ball at the end there… bad ending to quarter…
Bad ending for the Cavs. THAT can’t happen!
I jinxed em.
GEEEEEEZ
CHAMP!
Space Stars playing hard on D
Good D by Delly, but Thompson got the putback…
Stauskas really loves LeBron….
How does this team feel like it’s got a deep bench with three players out?
TT looking like Rocky with the above eye gash…
What the heck are we doing on offense right now?
I love JFJ!!!!!!
JAMES FREAKING JONES!!!
Now that’s his forte!
Long two is not JFJ’s forte…
Fred is pumping up Delly with +/- stats… Cols is losing his mind.
Cols, Delly just forced an inbounds turnover. It won’t add to his “5 points” or his steals total.
But it’s something he did that will help the Cavs win.
Which led to an in-depth convo about +/-
He did that against the Knicks as well.
Philly is both awful and intriguing.
Ha that’s why they compete for every first half, then go away at the end every game.
All part of the master plan…
Bad pass there from RJ… TT was open for the crush…
Bron with five assists already…
Kev with 5 Rebs too.
RJ for THREEEEEE!!
Love is deadly that deep…
Those are the ones I really want to see KLove knock down…
Mozgov looks slow…and is still scoring w ease
He didn’t look slow on that dunk off the drop pass from Bron though…
IF HE DIES, HE DIES!!!
You wouldn’t know who Jakar Sampson is, unless he went to SVSM like LeBron.
Jared Cunningham gets the start tonight in place of J.R. Smith. It’s his first start in 46 games over parts of four NBA seasons. Dave McMenamin
MDN trying to force points…all he needed to do was break the d down and kick it. 2 wide open shooters on that last one.
obvious offensive foul on Okafor and it goes on Moz. Then Okafor leaves his feet and lands on Moz and it’s a no call?
How much respect is the rook gonna get?
Then of course Moz was fouled and no love.
MOZ-GOD!!!
Love the Mo/Moz p’n’r!
Good start. Get it going early. Rest by the 4th. Let’s go Cavs!
BS foul against Moz. Either no call or offensive call.
Yeah, that was bad…
MO-MENTUM!!!!
Mo Gotti in full effect…
Cavs looking to run…. LBJ right down Euclid!
What a save by KLove!
KLOVE!!!
MDN with the steal! But ball goes off his head…
Stauskas was a huge Cavs fan in 2009. He was really bummed when we lost to Orlando.
MDN grabs the tip!
How can we make Austin Carr aware of the nickname? My life will be complete if he says “Much Danger Ninja throws the hammer down!”
I’ll take a shot and Tweet it at him…
wow thanks EG let’s see if it works!
I KNOW IT IS VERY EARLY IN THE SEASON —-BUT WHATS UP WITH THE GRIZZLIES ( BLOWN OUT BY THE TRAILBLAZERS LAST NIGHT ) AGAIN I REALIZE THE SEASON JUST STARTED BUT LET’S PLAY ” WHAT IF ” —-IF THE GRIZZLIES WOULD DECIDE TO “BLOW IT UP ” WHO WOULD YOU WANT TO GO AFTER/ WHO COULD WE GO AFTER ?
Their main problem is Gasol and Randolph haven’t played very well. If that doesn’t change, they are going to struggle in the West.
‘WHERE THERE ARE BLADES THERE ARE NINJA’S “——HOPING YOU AND THE CAVS HAVE A FAST START TONIGHT !!
Once Into the Badlands kicks off there will be plenty of visual material for MDN memes. Evil gonna go cray.
I think Much Danger Ninja may bring some needed energy at the start. Either way, we don’t lose this one. I’m fine with LBJ trying to shoot his way out of a slump, but I wonder if he needs to really re-do his jumper because of his back. While I don’t care about this game in particular, it can really frustrate teammates when you just fire away despite being off over and over again. They hustle on D and get open or set picks only to have it keep clanging off the rim. I’m not saying its a problem now,… Read more »
Your numbers for tonight:
CLE is a 13.5pt favorite, with an o/u @ 196. PHI covering the spread is a slight smart money bet, and the over more definitively smart money.
I’ll take CLE 105-92 over PHI. GO CAVS!
I think the Cavs blow them out. After 2 lackluster starts, I think they’ll be focused from the start. Plus I think they will start hitting their fair share of 3’s, so Cavs by 20.
I smell a backdoor cover by PHI as soon as CLE puts in their 3rd string… but I would love for you to be right, and me to be wrong!
Interesting gambling side note: CLE has gone 0-4 ATS against PHI the last four games, beating PHI by 10 only once the past 4 games.
I think we need to see LeBron shoot from the outside and keep on trying to get his shot back. This is the type of game to fire away from three and other areas to get into that rhythm. (why is there an h after the r????)
Other than that, I got nothing.
Why are there no vowels?? (And don’t gimme that ‘sometimes y’ BS)
If LBJ can work out his jump shot this year… WOW.
I think he keeps fading away, and to the left on his jump shots. At least his form looks fine.
I’d like for him to ‘get his shot back’ in practice. Watching Lebron brick 3s is about as fun as watching Kobe brick 3s. I.e., it’s not very enjoyable basketball. If he’s wide open, go ahead, but I don’t need to see the iso fall away 3 attempts.
