Live Thread: Cavs @ Knicks
2015-11-13“WELCOME TO MADISON SQUARE GARDEN! THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ARENA!”
This is the traditional refrain that will come blaring over the public address system just before tipoff of tonight’s game at The Garden, as the Cavs make their first stop on a three game road trip to face the Knicks in the Big Apple. And truly, even despite the more recent struggles of New York’s basketball team, there might be no bigger basketball stage than what many refer to as the “Mecca” of the sport — including the King himself…
“If I could have 82 regular-season games in the Garden,” James said last February to the New York Post, “I would because it’s the Mecca of basketball.”
People have claimed that there’s an almost spiritual feeling that overcomes you from just being inside the circular arena in the heart of Manhattan, and looking up and seeing the names of legendary athletes and performers hanging in the rafters. It’s where Willis Reed, famously limped onto the floor to rescue the Knicks in Game 7 of the 1971 NBA Finals, giving the team their first ever championship. It hosted the 1951 fight where the young Rocky Marciano knocked out his hero Joe Louis and proceeded to cry, and also the “Fight of the Century” when an undefeated Joe Frazier beat an undefeated Muhammad Ali.
The list of iconic moments at The Garden stretches even beyond sports. President John F. Kennedy was here for his birthday in 1962, when Marilyn Monroe performed the most infamous rendition of “Happy Birthday” known to man. MSG was also the home for the famous 1971 benefit concert for Bangladesh, a philanthropic endeavor that was repeated in 2001 after 9/11, in 2005 in response to Hurricane Katrina, and in 2012 after Hurricane Sandy.
The Cavs will look to make a little history of their own tonight, as they attempt to win their eighth straight to start the season at 8-1 for the first time since 1976-77. Cleveland has a three game winning streak at The Garden, and won the first meeting with the Knicks at the Q a week ago, so it’s likely New York will be looking to even the score, and their own record at 5-5. To accomplish this, however, they’ll need a better performance from Carmelo Anthony who was outscored 11-2 by LeBron in the fourth quarter of the first meeting, as the Cavs came back from a 15 point deficit.
Starting lineup for the Cavs: Mo Williams, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Timofey Mozgov. And for the Knicks: Jose Calderon, Arron Afflalo, Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis and Robin Lopez.
Tip off is at 7:30 p.m. (EST), and the game can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio and NBATV, and heard on 1100 WTAM.
Tune in and catch all of the action… If you’re lucky, you might just see a little history being made…
GO CAVS!
If CAVS hit half of those missed/open shots they’d be up double digits.
Knicks shooting 47% from both the floor and from three… Cavs just 39% and 21% respectively… also just 60% from the line…
Gotta put Bron in the post and make Melo play some defense.
Melo eating Bron up…
Cavs seem like they are allergic to the paint
Nice putback jam by Moz a few plays ago…
Finish this quarter strong, Cavs.
They did the opposite…
They’re hitting everything everything and we ain’t hitting much of anything. It’ll change eventually, and if it doesn’t then they deserve to win.
Flying Russian Hammer!
Derrick Fisher with one of the NBA’s most ridiculous beards.
Cavs are 4-18 beyond the arc
Cavs shooting nothing but threes and they are ice cold out there
Why would you go inside when you can’t get a call?
Knicks just beating the Cavs to spots on offense… and knocking down their threes…
Melo is unconscious right now…
Flying Russian Hammer!
Oops, wrong spot…
Mo’s D is garbage.
Yeah, he kind of needs to be looking to score when he’s in there to offset… otherwise it can get ugly…
When he’s not scoring or facilitating well (which he’s not), Mo is practically unplayable.
Needed that LBJ drive… Too many outside shots
Nice hustle JR!
How about some LBJ in the post again?
Great hustle by JR to knock it away from the rookie…
JR defense is there!
Wow. Andy got HAMMERED
Sure looked like AV got fouled there… gonna need to tighten up the D and the box outs…
Andy is toast, needs to hit the bahamas
Andy got hammered underneath. Hes never been strong enough to handle that but he deserved the call on that one.
Clam down. It’s a long season.
Afflalo with the repeated elbow…
Cavs getting mauled underneath.
Sheesh. Cavs can’t buy a call.
JR gone cold after hitting first two….
Delly with a toe-on-the-line deuce.
Sweet Lou… not so sweet to KLove on that foul…
Did Love just get blocked by Sweet Lou? Love the hustle though.
Lou Amundsen still holding a grudge that KLove took his job.
he got fouled 5 times! Phelps says, he’ll shoot the next half hour at the line!
Andy needs to practice his layups…
Oh Andy, yikes……..
Andy shaking off some rust, misses two bunnies.
Derrick Williams’ hair is really distracting… almost like clown hair…
Like a Sideshow…
Grant might only Knick who can drive to the hoop with regularity…
Delly is KILLING it this game!
On the Knicks broadcast, Frazier says the Cavs tonight have been “perpetual motion…a high-functioning offense.”
Could Derrick Williams have gone with a worse look for his hair?
Sweet Lou sighting…
Delly is so good this year! I wasn;t really convinced last year, though he certainly gave it his all and then some, but this season it seems as if his ceiling as aplayer has been lifted way up.
LBJ feeling good.
Delly going to the rack!
Delly putting Galloway in the blender!
Delly with the wrong-footed layup… love it!
that pass to Thompson was insane.
BTW Lebron is wearing the 13’s with the Friday the 13th theme. Nightmare color way.
JR misses a major heat check.
Bron almost dunked himself on that oop…
Lebron got up, scraped his elbow on the rim! No doubts about his health
Great pass. Better finish.
Both teams shooting well early.
Melo heating up with 10 early points…
LBJ is looking like he did in the Heat game when he established the low post game…
JR on defense, strong.
The Kraken failed to materialize there.
Ooh. Bron had that measured. Looked like Moz went straight up.
Let’s get MDN in the game for the fourth quarter.
Deeeep three from KLove after the Mozzy pick-pocket job!
We are on fire!!!
Bron getting good inside position already…
Nobody boxing out Porzingis…
League pass shows a blank feed for this game…I’m relying on you guys to provide game commentary….
It’s on NBA TV. Do you get that?
No, but feed back up. Whew!
J.R. has two games worth of revenge to get in tonight.
JR SWISH HEATING UP!
JR Swish x 2 to start. The shot is back?
Be great to see JR get out of his slump tonight… OH… good start!
Speaking of Willis Reed…
Your numbers for tonight:
CLE is a 6.5pt favorite against NYK, with an o/u @ 203.5. Smart money is on NYK to cover, and money is split 50/50 on the o/u.
I’ll take CLE in a close one, 105-99, over NYK.
Go Cavs!
