Live Thread: Cavs @ Pelicans
2015-12-04The Cavs will look to bend a few beaks tonight as they prepare to take on the Pelicans in the first game of a quick back-to-back weekend road trip at Smoothie King Center (yeah, that’s right… Smoothie King… drink it in). New Orleans hasn’t quite lived up to their lofty expectations, after surprisingly winging their way into the playoffs last season. They come into this one with just a 4-15 record, having lost their last four in a row (sound familiar? *cough* *cough* Wizards…), despite still getting a high level of play from their rising superstar, Anthony Davis (23.5 ppg, 10.7 rpg). Meanwhile, the Cavs are reportedly making a change to their starting lineup to help bolster their defensive efforts from the outset, inserting Matthew Dellavedova for Mo Williams.
After giving up early leads to lesser teams lately, David Blatt is apparently looking to staunch the bleeding of opposing guard penetration, at least until his starting backcourt can return. On that front, the Cavs got some encouraging news with regards to their missing star point guard, as Kyrie Irving progressed to a full court, full-contact five-on-five practice yesterday. According to ESPN, Irving’s presence, along with Iman Shumpert’s, resulted in the Cavs’ “best practice, by far” of the season.
In the best quote of the article, Irving said that he and Shumpert hope to emulate professional wrestlers when they get back in the lineup:
“We understand our presence on the team and what we bring to the team,” Irving said. “When we get back we call ourselves the Hardy Brothers. We’re coming full attack like the Hardy Brothers back in WWF.”
Probable starting lineup for tonight for the Cavs: Matthew Dellavedova, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. And for the Pels: Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans, Alonzo Gee, Anthony Davis and Omer Asik.
One guy who won’t be playing, but made his presence known anyway during warmups, is former Cav (and still Angry Smurf) Kendrick Perkins, who reportedly shouted something at Delly…
Kendrick Perkins visited #Cavs on court. He yelled at Matthew Dellavedova, "You lucky I ain't playing. I'd hit you with a hard-ass screen."

Logic should dictate that the Cavs will be able to handle The Brow and his flock fairly easily, but as we know, nothing seems all that easy for the Cavs these days. New Orleans will likely give the wine & gold all they can handle on their home court, especially with the return of a healthy Tyreke Evans. Hopefully, Delly can help keep him in check.
Prediction: Cavs 114-110.
GO CAVS!
Love needs to take some advice that Pop gave Leonard last year. “When we call a play for you its not for you to score its for us to score” Sometimes he gets a decent shot but misses a better play I think
Those were all pretty wide open shots though…
I didn’t like the 7 footer. But I agree they were open. Also the TO where he thought he got fouled there were wide open shooters
How has Delly fared as a starter?
Ball movement strong with the starters… a lot of easy offense/shots. And Mo fits with the 2nd unit.
Delly like. 1 alley oop. couple nice back screens for bron. Hit an open 3. Making Gordon and Holiday work for points.
Team leader at +10 again of course
DELLY TREY!!!!!
He bailed LBJ out there… LBJ had an open jumper, didn’t take it.
LBJ can’t shoot the three lately…
O crap sorry guys my feed is slower than y’alls.
Yeah, the League Pass is about thirty seconds or so behind the live feed if you are watching that…
Nice ball movement by NOP there.
Ugh. Can’t leave Davis all alone on the baseline.
Delly saves them at the last second.
DELLY TREY!!
Geez… Love can’t hit anything.
Come on Kevin!
Man Love has missed 4 shots in a row.
Love’s gotta hit one of those… especially after Bron stripped the rebound from The Brow…
Wow.. Mo got lucky on D there, but made up for it with the sweet jumper.
Delly and Bron with the hustle!
Nice plays by them…. KLove struggling with his jumper early.
Yeah I know some Clevelanders like Norris Cole but I don’t want him on our team.
Just got home… what’d I miss?
JR with five first quarter treys.
Excellent!
Called it Nate, 4 possessions in a row to KLove in the post to get him going. Should’ve had the foul call on the 3rd possession he got mugged.
TT struggling in the early going… missed a rebound, couldn’t guard Anderson on the ISO.
Love the pace so far this game.
Definitely feels like Cavs are controlling it.
ANOTHER POST BY KLOVE AND ONE!!!!!!!!!!! LBJ with the crazy pass!
LBJ looking for KLOVE in the post… money.
RJ expecting help defense from TT, never came.
Yikes mo And Jones together on D.
RJ struggling too…. two plays against him in a row.
Yeah those three together are a combined 100+ years old.
HAHAHAHA….. exactly.
Open jumper for Mo, couldn’t convert. Smaller lineup with LBJ @ the 4.
Nice quarter. Let’s get Klove going.
YES… in the post.
Beautiful jumper by Mo!!!! great two man game with TT.
I LOVE the move by Blatt to put Mo with the 2nd unit… they needed an on the ball playmaker.
Great defense by the Cavs in the 1st quarter… not bad offense either…. ball movement great with the starters.
Another nice play by Mo, Champ couldn’t convert.
Followed by a bad play by Mo…. dang it!
Mo with a nice look, in and out…. Mo with some defense on the ball!
I like this “smallish” lineup on the court now for the Cavs.
Looks like JR stayed off Bourbon street last night.
HAHAHAHAHA… yes he did!
Nice one on one defense by the Champ.
Mo with an awful decision against anthony davis.
Yeah saw that coming a mile away. Gotta know better Mo.
Under-estimating his length and recovery speed.
R U KIDDING MEEEE JR!!! FEED THE BEAST!
Bad call on JR, looked like a clean strip.
Damn JR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I keep thinking Mo is Boobie Gibson with that headband.
Mo not passing out of the double team fast enough.
Nor getting the team into its offense quickly enough.
LeBron just knocked Anderson on his ass!
He could get concussed on a hit like that.
JR AGAIN!!!! EN FUEGO!!!
There’s no foul there. That was crap.
Ball don’t lie.
“Superstar call”
TT with a missed box out on Anderson.
Nice cut by LBJ, nice pass by Delly… easy foul call.
The former Cavs guards in a row: Jack, Ramon Sessions, and Gee. Exorcising some demons these last few games.
Nice post defense and rebounding by JR!
Good ball movement there.
Incredible cross court pass by LBJ to KLove, then KLove with the great touch pass to Moz on the pin down in front of the rim! Foul on NOP.
Delly can’t pick up cheap fouls though. They need him to stay out of foul trouble.
Moz didn’t even have his hands up there. Geez.
Why is NO booing LeBron like he played for them then left in FA?
As Arch stated above, Delly does indeed fit better in this lineup. We just don’t need Mo’s midrange game with the firepower on the floor. Delly facilitating and defending is much more useful. Also Moz still suffering from stone hands.
I dont’ know if the Cavs are doing a great job shading to him or if the Pelicans didn’t red the scouting report on Love but Davis not doing much yet
LBJ with a beautiful pass to Moz in the paint… Moz not expecting the ball as he should have.
Moz a step slow guarding the rim, Tyreke with the and one.
LBJ off the ball, nice back door for lay up.
I think Delly missed the oop with Moz… tried to hit KLove for 3, KLove tries to hit Moz on the seal down low, bad pass.
Great start on both ends. Delly oop is nice to try and get Moz out of his own head
Nice defensive play by JR, leads to the fastbreak layup for LBJ!
Great start! Delly fits better with this line up — as noted in the previous pod.
JR’s ON FIRE!!!
Delly lob to Moz!
Beautiful two man game!
Love vs Davis could be a NIghtmare but… JR SWISH!
Another LBJ to JR connection!
JR IS GOING STEPH CURRY!
LBJ on the post-up…. JR with the 3SWISH!!!
Good to see Alonzo Gee is still in the league.
YESSS! Delly gets the start.
Love the Delly into the starting line up move. I would put TT in as well and try and get Moz going off the bench
Wait is TT starting? Moz hurt or benched?
Mozerati starting
Good evening CtB! Your numbers for this evening:
CLE is 4.5pt favorite over NOP, with an o/u @ 208.5. Smart money on NOP and the under.
I’ll take CLE over NOP 106-102… GO CAVS!
In other news, Kristaps Porzingis with another nice game! Shout out to Nate and his great scouting HAHA!
Just watched the trip to the children’s hospital. These guys are awesome. I love how they represent the team and city.
Loved that. I remember Danny Ferry and Fratello visiting me in 95 when I was 6 years old and stuck in the Rainbows Babies and Children with Cancer.
Glad you recovered!
Me too. Thanks. Ferry was really great to me actually and probably a big reason I’m a hoops fanatic. Gave me NBA Live 96. I think I memorized every player in the NBA as a 6 year old. Loved playing with thee Rockets
Ever play tecmo Nba?
No. NBA Jam for sure. Don’t think I ever heard of Tecmo NBA though
Those 2d live games were a blast.
Kendrick Perkins visited #Cavs on court. He yelled at Matthew Dellavedova, “You lucky I ain’t playing. I’d hit you with a hard-ass screen.”
Oops EG already included this….
Go Cavs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
