Live Thread: Cavaliers @ Blazers
2015-12-26The Cavaliers look to get back into the win column against a fading Blazers squad. After watching Christmas Day jumpers continually clank off the rim in Oracle Arena, the Cavs assume the law of averages will balance things out in Portland. It’s hard to imagine a repeat performance from behind the arc. If shots fall for Cleveland, it will be bad news for Terry Stotts.
Despite featuring one of the highest scoring backcourts in the NBA, the Blazers have struggled to win games. C.J. McCollum has developed quickly into a deadly offensive player. The third year guard is playing 20 minutes more per game than he did last season. In his 35 minutes, McCollum is hitting 40% of his threes en route to a cool 20.1 ppg.
Though he works hard, he is undersized for a shooting guard. Combined with Damien Lillard, this is the worst defensive backcourt in the Association. Lillard continues to be Steph Curry Lite on the offensive end and Mo Williams Lite on the defensive end. To put it bluntly, Lillard is an abject travesty on that end of the floor. DRPM hates him. To be fair, poor defensive teams drag down DRPM numbers, but Lillard has been consistently awful throughout his career. (note: How is Wiggins so low on that list? There is some ammo for the Wiggins haters.)
Terry Stotts continues to baffle the NBA by bringing Ed Davis off the bench. I understand the desire to get Noah Vonleh some meaningful minutes, but wouldn’t it be more reasonable to let Vonleh compete against backups? Davis has been the Blazers’ best big man by a mile. Pairing Davis and Mason Plumlee can crowd the paint, but it still doesn’t make a lot of sense to throw Vonleh to the wolves. Meyers Leonard hasn’t helped Stotts space the floor as he has been a catastrophe for Portland this season. He was my dark horse for MIP this season. His 25% shooting from deep isn’t about to win him any awards.
Kyrie Irving seems to enjoy his battle with Lillard. Here’s hoping Uncle Drew starts to “get buckets”. Some pickup ballers put up more resistance than Lillard. Now is the time.
[Editor’s Note: Due to the time difference (middle of the night in Europe) Ben had to write this early and schedule it to run later, and was likely asleep before it was officially reported that both Kyrie (scheduled rest) and Damien Lillard (plantar fasciitis) will miss tonight’s game. Please adjust your expectations and wagering accordingly.]
Shump travel kills the momentum…
Say it softly now: Delly trey
Delly Trey! Showing some life…
I’m sure Lebron will stay in till he gets double figures scoring…IF he gets there. Really wish they had just rested him.
So… I guess Boxing Day is not the same as Boxscore Day…
Or Boxout Day…………
No ball movement a
Can they get to 20 points by halftime?
Ok this is just bad. Idc how much someone wants to give this a pass and move on, for championship aspirations a showing like this can be crippling. To think that this even slightly ok can wreck you in May.
A faint pulse: Mo with a little hustle to come up with a long rebound. I’m reaching here…
Aight Lebron is about to go ape for the rest of this quarter
LeBron is about to go LeIso and do basically nothing..
Hey… Bron’s back… that should fix things… /s
Blazers almost got that offensive board… even though it was 1 on 5…
Nothing but high screens to mid-range jumpers for the Cavs and nobody playing Defense.
TT and AV out there… so at least they’ll get a lot of rebounds on their missed shots…
Most of the Cavs outside shots are not even close.
The Cavs have all the sudden become an extremely limited team. They play good offense in most of their home games but when they hit the road the offense goes to *&#$
We suddenly forgot how to play basketball. What a disappointment.
Five non-starters in for the start of the second quarter — which begins with a turnover.
Turnover number 8……
Paging Dr Shump stat, defense is hemorrhaging points!
Cavs on pace for a 48 point game…
Seriously, name a supposed title contender who has dropped a quarter like that. Even that game where GS got down to the Clippers big, it was more that Paul was hitting all the crap he as tossing up.
Wow… 25% and 7 turnovers…
Holy mushrooms…is it 2011 right now?
Time to trade everyone!!!!!!
Cavs season is probably over! Fire Blatt! Fire Griffin! The sky IS falling!
Really wish they’d empty the bench, Pop style.
Cavs offense is horrible. No ball movement, no off the ball movement, no designed plays. Just crap shots.
Yikes. Wonder if they quit on Blatt.
They quit on themselves…
I think they just thought they could come in here for an easy win and even as the Blazers lead grew, they continue to lack any urgency
I think they’re still feeling sorry for themselves after last night…
Nothing but solo basketball… no passing… no plays being run… no communication or intensity on defense… Cavs DOA in this one…
We have no semblance of an offensive system right now
AC is right… “Run some plays!”
If I’m Blatt, I clear the bench to start the 2nd quarter. This is NOT how you come back from a gut wrenching loss
I will look forward to C.J. McCollum’s “I’m Coming Home” article with Lee Jenkins in the SI in a couple of years…
Defense has been totally absent so far and the Cavs now look like the Sixers on offense.
Worst than the sixers
12 points in the first quarter? That is unacceptable. End of story. Not to mention giving up 32 points… Smh.
Silly me for thinking they could make one last stop… 34 points.
34 with the Crabbe apple at the end….
I feel bad for all of you East coasters and Midwesterners who stayed up late for this garbage…
I’m stuck on a Dallas Tarmac waiting for tornados to pass…considering taking a nap instead of listening
Ugh… sorry dude!
Still only 10:30. I can still be asleep by 11 if it doesn’t change quickly……
Had a feeling this one might be an L, so I wish they had just sat Lebron for this one.
This team is driving me nuts right now.
Guess they used up all of their good defense last night…
Apparently still got plenty of LeIso left though.
Oh wow…this is silly. We aren’t even playing the same game
The Camera crew also took tonight off.
And rightly so…
Nothing like getting boatraced by the third worst team in the WC…
TT gets the roll, maybe?
Apparently they had it right with technical difficulties.
Stop shooting LeBron!!
Good, save my eyes, lol
Thank god… the feed went out again…
Here we go again
Can’t do it all yourself Bron…
What is timo’s deal? Is he reverting to average or in a slump?
This is ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cavs just don’t seem to give a (expletive) early in games anymore…
That moving screen call was crap.
What is Lebron doing?? Doesn’t guard Aminu and give up wide open 3, then comes down and holds ball to shoot long jumper??
TIME TO WAKE UP CAVS —-EX CAVS / CRABBE –TURNED INTO CAV KILLER SO FAR
Another bad Timo start…
Moz with too much Baryshnikov…
I’M HERE EVIL–IF YOU FAIL TO SEE ME BLOG—TOO MANY ALES OR MRS NOMAD TOO FRISKY ( OR BOTH ) SPEAKING OF FRISKY NEED A LITTLE OF THAT FROM THE CAVS RIGHT NOW !!!
Aye-yay-ya NOMAD… keep it PG-13 my man! ;)
McCollum looking to have his own version of a double nickel game with no Lillard…
Glad to see Lebron’s trying something new and shooting 3’s and long range 2’s…… oh wait.
Cavs seemingly trying to shoot their way out of their three point slump… rather than work the ball inside… smh…
McCollum taking page out of Livingston’s book with the mid-range game…
Kev’s been pretty bad at free throws lately…
Just a straight up line drive out of his hands
Hmmm…. I think I liked it better when I couldn’t see it… ;)
Back now… please hold FSO!
Sounds like Moz had a block and then KLove hit a three…
I feel like we are in the 1930’s listening to the TV like a radio.
LOL… how I long for Joe Tait…
It was back for a second… ugh
Technical difficulties on League Pass…and GoGarden Club on CtB. Things can only get better from here!
Yeah… we’re looking to get that glitch on the site fixed soon… can’t speak for FSO…
Good evening CtB! HEre are your numbers for tonight:
CLE is a 7.5pt favorite of POR with an o/u set @ 195.5. Smart money is on a POR cover, and the UNDER is a slight smart money bet but too close to 50/50 for it to be definitive.
I’ll take CLE in a close, defensive contest 101-94. GO CAVS!
The way the Cavs are playing defense lately, and with Lillard out, I think the under is a very good bet.
Cleveland plays free and easy after last night. I’ll take cle to beat the spread and the over.
The team stats for Portland and Cleveland are remarkably similar.
FG/3pt/FT%
P 44.3/35.3/73.4
C 44.9/35.3/73.3
Rebounds/Blocks/Steals
P 45.9/4.0/6.2
C 45.3/3.9/6.6
Points scored
P 101.0
C 100.7
One stat that’s not similar – the win-loss record.
Without LMA, Wes Matthews, Robin Lopez, Batum this season.. And now Lillard tonight. I’ve gotta look up who is still on the Blazers roster
Of course the real difference is defensively…
C: 94.9 points allowed
P: 103.1 points allowed
Yea I meant to say offensively the stats are similar. Defensively is another story.
I would love to see the Cavs play some bully-ball down low to start the game and open up shots for the outside gunners to get untracked…
