Live Thread: All Star Saturday (#GreatWhiteNorth)
2016-02-13Good day, eh! For those of you jonesing for your basketball and C:tB fix (sorry we had to take off on you for a couple days, eh!), here’s a special All Star Saturday Live Thread to discuss all of the action from tonight’s festivities in the Great White North. Though you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see LeBron and the Cavs coaching staff represent Cleveland (thanks to those NBA hosers), there’s a whole strange brew of events and participants that should still be worth raising a few bottles or glasses to this evening. So, cook up some back bacon, grab your jelly doughnuts and your split plea soup… then crack open as many beers as you see fit and enjoy the action!
Also, it’s cold out there, so don’t be a hosehead… remember to wear your touque before you take off for the Great White North!
The action kicks off at the Air Canada Center in Toronto at 8 p.m. (EST) on TNT, featuring the usual three part sequence of events (the whole evening is sponsored by State Farm… so expect wall-to-wall Meet the Hoopers spots).
First up is the Taco Bell Skills Challenge. The field this year includes:
*Emmanuel Mudiay, Denver Nuggets
DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento Kings
Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Pelicans
CJ McCollum, Portland Trail Blazers
Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves
Isaiah Thomas, Boston Celtics
Jordan Clarkson, Los Angeles Lakers
* Replaces Defending Champion Patrick Beverley (injured)
Prediction: This seems like a really weird group of “skills” participants. Clarkson is probably the best ball-handler of the bunch, so I guess I’ll go with the young Laker PG.
—
Next is the Foot Locker Three Point Shootout. Participants do not include J.R. Smith, but do include:
*Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors
James Harden, Houston Rockets
Klay Thompson, Golden State Warriors
Khris Middleton, Milwaukee Bucks
Kyle Lowry, Toronto Raptors
JJ Redick, Los Angeles Clippers
CJ McCollum, Portland Trail Blazers (replaces injured Chris Bosh)
Devin Booker, Phoenix Suns
* Defending champion
Prediction: It really is a crime that J.R. wasn’t included in this field. So, I out of bitterness, I will pull for the other replacement for the injured Chris Bosh (who shouldn’t have been in it in the first place), since he’s at least a Cleveland guy. Go C.J.!
—
And, to close it out, the Verizon Slam Dunk Contest. The four lucky contestants include:
*Zach LaVine, Minnesota Timberwolves
Aaron Gordon, Orlando Magic
Will Barton, Denver Nuggets
Andre Drummond, Detroit Pistons
* Defending champion
Prediction: No reason to think Zach LaVine won’t replicate his high-flying above the rim success, especially since big men don’t typically do well in dunk contests (unless they wear a Superman cape).
Who do you like? And also, while we’re at it, feel free to serve up any hot takes you have on all of the trade rumors swirling around this weekend like Canadian snowflakes…
I agree with the judges definitely not that impressive.
It was nice. It was a good all star Saturday over all.
Good dunk… but a 50?
Kind of a windmill from the free throw line is impressive too.
HOLY COW! A windmill from the FT line?!!
It’s definitely over. He really was high.
Gordon deserves to win this…
He kind of copyed Gordon’s dunk.
WOW!
That was creative. 10.
3 of the best dunks since Vince Carter in one night!!!
MJ’s dunk…
Half a foot from MJ…
Aaron Gordon’s gonna straight kill himself…
Andre shoulda got Naemar or someone to pull that off…
In slow motion…
That is smooth…especially considering he does the ball move in about two-tenths of a second.
They should end all star Saturday with the 3 point contest.
Would rather see Lavine versus Vince Carter. Jordan couldn’t dunk like that. Oooooooh, I know…sacrilege. But then again only a couple guys in history could, most of them never having played or never will play in the nba.
Well… that wins…
That was nice by Lavine…
I don’t think that dunk by Gordon was all that…
Those intro videos…… Mehhh
Andre really should have dunked from the free throw line just to stick it to the hack-a-advocates…
Shaq going to need to go to 11…
Magic throwing shade…
Will Barton doing a Thriller homage?
A high school kid did that same dunk today. They showed it at BR.
Baskin Robbins?
Bleacher Report……………
LOL…

If the Cavs could trade for Korver this would be my ideal line up for the Cavs :
At 5 : TT
At 4 : KLove
At 3 : Bron
At 2 : Korver or JR (whoever is on better rythm)
At 1 : KI
I believe the Cavs need an additional shooter. JR is just streaky.
Kevin Hart is available…
Well he tied Donkey lol…….
The Iceman!
New Kyrie commercial… eh…
ONE THING FOR SURE IS DON’T GIVE EITHER ONE A CORNER SHOT / AUTOMATIC FROM THERE —TAKE YOUR CHANCES OF THEM SHOOTING FROM WING OR STRAIGHT ON
JUST FINISHED MY KAST ” LENTEN PACZKI ” –PROBABLY HAD 3 DOZEN ( OR MORE ) VARIETY OF FLAVORS—MAN ARE THEY GOOD —BUT MAN ARE THEY FILLING —THE TREADMILL IS CALLING ME ( TOO COLD HERE TO RUN OUT SIDE ) !!!
WHEN DO YOU THINK THE CAVS ( THEY WILL DO ONE ) PULL A TRADE —–BLOCKBUSTER OR MINOR TRADE
Easier said than done to deny the corner shot…
I think any trade, if one happens, likely happens pretty much on the deadline day…
Two things are working against the Cavs making a trade…
1) Nobody wants what they have to offer
2) What they’re looking for isn’t really available
Look out Ryan Seacrest… PG-13 is gunning for you…
My son just said that anyone who wonders why Draymond gets his triple doubles all the time… just watch the three point contest…
Your son is 100% right and at the same time they (splash bros) are the reason why the Warriors are so hard to defend.
I’d like to at least believe that JR would have made it to the final three… but man, IDK if he could have stayed with Klay… That was insane…
Wow… those two are freaking video games
Steph probably needs to step back a few feet behind the line to be comfortable…
Not enough rookie…
Splash Bros and Booker the Rook…
Never mind, he woke up.
Those first three misses by Steph might have been the first time he’s missed that many in a row all year…
Is Steph human?
Sure doesn’t look like it… that left wing rack looked robotic…
Poor showing by CJ… looks like I’m 0-2… LOL
Yeah… good idea to put Booker in the competition…
Middleton is soooooo bad…
Lots of misses so far.
The Pistons gave up Brandon Knight and Khris Middleton for Brandon Jennings…
All 3 of these guys with 20.
Kris Middleton? Really?
Criminal that JR isn’t in this…
Curry is gonna vanquish this competition. He consumes joy.
I tried on thr Samsung VR this week at Best buy. Was really cool. The inertial sensors in there are tight.
I’ve never wanted anything more than for Kevin Hart to beat Braymond in this ridiculous contest…
One more Kev!
This is hilarious
Man… I really can’t stand Braymond…
That was about an exciting a finish as the league could have hoped for.
The KAT’s got some skillz…
Full Droppin’ Dimes with the Hoopers video…
I think I preferred the Shooting Stars competition to the Skills Contest…
Well, that was embarrassing Clarkson… way to let the other guy get the layup first… smh…
Man, I thought Craig Sager’s blue suede jacket was awesome… until I got a look at Andrew Wiggins’ mirrorball one… Bowie-esque…
Anybody got a hot take on the Melo trade? One thing’s for sure… Melo would definitely help the Cavs on defense… /s
CavsDan makes the trade, Cavs flame out of the playoffs, Melo and Leb bolt to destinations unknown. #hottake
I don’t think it really helps them beat the Warriors, which would be the only reason to make a seismic trade like that. Other than making the Celtics, good, of course, if anyone really wants that. I don’t think that’s happening, so pie in the sky for Danny Ainge…
Bill Simmons would love this trade…
I’m sure he’s been furiously pleasuring himself at the prospect…hope the Celtics either get ripped off, or completely shut out this trade deadline.
One that they talked about on Nate Duncan’s trade deadline show sounded reasonable to me, although it’ll never happen: Love, Varejao, Kaun and a ’19 2nd rounder for Gallinari, Barton, Hickson and Joffrey Lauvergne. I think it would give the Cavs a better chance at beating the Warriors, but it would be difficult to mesh such a large new group of players in half a season.
Did he actually include JJ Hickson in that? Now I know it’s a goof…
I think just for salary or roster, but I would have to listen again. Nobody wants Hickson.
I missed the talent competition, but ready for the Skills Competition…
They really shouldn’t let Charles Barkley sing…
Anderson Varejao and Delly for Asik – who says no?? (Only mildly dumber than almost every other moronic ‘who says no??’ I’ve seen in the last week)
I’d be shocked if Curry doesn’t win the 3 contest easily. There are a few spots on the floor where he almost literally doesn’t miss.
I also expect Lavine to win the dunk contest (a competition which to me is utterly played out). He can get way up, anyway.
