Preview/Live Thread: The Finals, Game 7 (#AnythingCanHappen)
2016-06-19“When you give a team life, give a team confidence, anything can happen in a Game 7.” – Paul Pierce
Way back when the 2015-16 NBA season started… all of 235 days ago, did you imagine it would end up here? Sure, it may not have been all that difficult to predict a rematch between the Cavs and the Warriors, given that they were each the odds-on favorites to capture their respective conferences… but could you have fathomed the historic significance of this one remaining Finals contest? Even as recently as a week ago… were you one of the stalwarts who believed in your heart that the Cavaliers could somehow, someway climb out of the 3-1 hole they had dug to force this seventh and deciding game?
No matter the victor, it will be an ending for the ages. One that will be long remembered in the annals of the sport. If Golden State holds serve at home in Oracle Arena (where they went 39-2 during the season, and are 11-2 in the playoffs), they will finish off arguably the greatest season in League history, cementing their place amongst the all-time elite teams. But, if Cleveland can parlay the momentum they’ve built behind their runaway locomotive of a leader, and rip glory from the jaws of what seemed like certain defeat a week ago, they will be the ones to carve their names into basketball lore. After all, in case you maybe hadn’t heard… no team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA Finals. In fact, only two other teams had ever even forced a Game 7, and none in the last 50 years (the Knicks in 1951 and the Lakers in 1966), since before the ABA/NBA merger.
As Tom indicated in his brilliant piece yesterday… nobody really knows anything about how this will all play out. The patterns that have emerged (or haven’t as the case may be), the storylines, the history, the statistical information… none of it really matters in a Game 7. Everyone will leave everything they have on the court… from the MVPs to the X Factors… from the wiliest vet to the least used role player… to a man they will exhaust themselves in these final 48 minutes to capture a crown. There’s no next game that would require a monitoring of minutes played for guys like LeBron. There’s no next game for which guys like Draymond could be suspended. Win or lose, this is it. For one team, it’s a summer of jubilance… for the other a summer of second-guessing and might-have-beens.
So, which stars will shine brightest? Which MVP will prevail? Will the Splash Brothers break loose and throw cold water on the Cavs’ dreams of a victory parade? Or will LeBron and Kyrie continue to break down the once unbreakable Warrior D to dash the chances of a repeat? Which injury issue will loom larger… Iggy’s ailing back, or Kyrie’s banged up foot? Which missing man on offense will find his shot first, Harrison Barnes or Kevin Love? Who can push the right buttons at the right time… Steve Kerr or Ty Lue? How much of a factor will the refs be… and will Ayesha Curry break Twitter? These questions and so many more will all soon be a part of the amazing history of this game, this series and this season for the record books.
Beyond the game, there’s the question of what this will mean to the history of these two franchises, and their respective fanbases and cities.
If the Warriors find a way to finish things off on their home floor, they would effectively answer any doubters of their greatness. Their legacy would be ensured, and even those that debated the validity of their championship last year through the veil of significant injuries suffered by their opponents in literally every round of the playoffs, would have to tip their collective caps to this team. With 73 wins and a second straight championship, they would have to be considered a dynasty, and the odds-on favorites to do it again next year.
If the Cavaliers pull off the upset that many thought not just improbable, but downright impossible… the rest of the world should be put on notice for the audible roar that will be heard from downtown Cleveland. You know the numbers, so I won’t dwell on them here… but half a century of sports disappointment, bitterness and woe would evaporate in one glorious instant. LeBron James would fulfill his promise he and Lee Jenkins crafted so thoughtfully in the summer of 2014… finally bringing home a championship to Cleveland. The victory parade would not only be epic… it might require multiple days to complete.
I’m posting this early to get the conversation going, so there may still be changes to the lineups on each side. There may be multiple updates as we get closer to game time (8 pm EST), so look out for them. I’m also going to break from my habitual prediction of the winner and final score… not because I’m superstitious, but because, like so many others, I literally have no idea what’s going to happen. In the end, win or lose, I love this team and have been proud to cover it with our team at C:tB.
I will leave you with this… These teams have also had a history of playing on national holidays. Neither Christmas Day nor Martin Luther King Day worked out all that well for the Cavs. But today just happens to be Father’s Day. On a personal note… this is my first Father’s Day without my dad. He was the one who indoctrinated me into Cleveland sports, something I alternately loved and cursed him for over the years since my youth. Even though it’s been 20 years since I lived in Northeastern Ohio, not a day goes by that I don’t think about Cleveland. My dad was alive for the last Indians championship in 1948, and the last Browns title in 1964. He sadly never got to see a Cavalier championship… something I know he desperately wanted. He loved watching LeBron. He loved this team. I hope they win it for all the fathers who would love nothing more than to share a championship with their children. But, if they fall short… I will be comforted by remembering something my own father always said to me after tough losses…
“Son, it only hurts because you care. And, it’s good to care about Cleveland.”
Thanks dad. And thank you to all the fathers on this historic Father’s Day.
GO CAVS!
Good to see a timeout so they can talk adjustments.
Look what Love did…
https://vine.co/v/5BButdwQvQt
Probably his toughest play in the playoffs…
Wow! How did Ky hit that?
Hopefully that helps settle Love in a little.
Way to stay with it KEV!
GREAT block TT!!
Warriors just full on tackling guys…
LeBron…
https://vine.co/v/5BBBpBTvxLQ
Love not looking good in there
Nice second effort. Just gotta settle down.
Bad sign from Barnes…
Get that rebound Kev
Was being held by his jersey or he probably would have…
Unreal. Wake up Kev.
Let’s get it started
https://vine.co/v/5BBBiB7ljlw
WAS THINKING THE SAME FROM .LOVE / JB225
Way to get it inside Ky!
Here. We. Go.
So excited for battle bots. This Cavs game should be pretty good too.
Just cracked open a Millersburg brewing company French Ridge IPA. Only Ohio beer while the game’s on.
Drinking wine to calm my nerves. Not from Ohio, though.
Stella for me.
I hope the Cavs can come up with some great and new offensive sets that can help the Cavs in key situations. I hope Kyrie is at least at 90% and I’m also praying for a 15 and 12 from KLove.
Nervous as heck…this is a pretty big game, guyz…

DAMN I THINK I JUST PISSED MY PANTS —NOT REALLY JUST THOUGHT I WOULD THROW SOME HUMOR IN THERE— WAS NOT THIS NERVOUS ON MY WEDDING NIGHT —(APOLOGIES O THE MRS NOMAD )
My anticipation is at an all time high… I cannot handle these commercials… Get on with it already!
Let TT have an impact the entire game, and have Lebron hit outside shots, and I’ll take my chances…
LETS GO CAVS!!!!!!
LETS GO CAVS!!!!!
Double double raining threes and cleaning glass.
For as much media I have ingested over the past 48 hours — every blog, podcast and message board imaginable — I feel very calm. Just glad we have this opportunity. Doesn’t come along often enough in this city.
Hope those 90k lower bowl tickets are worth it, Oracle…
It’s seems the Warriors are going back to have more movement on their offense like they had in the first 2 games. Let’s hope the Cavs defense can adjust to whatever the Warriors have plan for them offensively.
Defense is always the key IMO.
Let’s Go Cavs!!!
You mean more illegal screens.
JAY CAWFORD( ESPN ) BORN IN NEARBY SANDUSY ,OH GAVE AN AMAZNG TRIBUTE TO HIS FATHER AND THE FANS ” IN THE LAND “—MY NERVES ARE ABOUT READY TO EXPLODE !!!!
LeBron looks pissed
A good sign.
Does Kevin Love impact this game?
I feel like he has to for them to win. I’m not saying he needs to have 25 and 15, but they need him to open things up for everyone else. They need his TD passes off of Warriors misses.
I really hope so, he has to.
Sorry meant to reply but i suck
I see it up there.
I have no idea about Love. But definitely interested.
this is so intense right now…haven’t felt like this since I competed in college lol!
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/744680981790064640
I love that Jay Crawford is on ESPN #represent
That piece was great.
If the Cavs players are as nervous as I am we are doom lol.
Seriously. The next 2.5 hours are going to be terrifying.
Phenomenally well put and your dad’s advice is an absolute truth about life. I’m glad your the one behind the keyboard tonight. Win or lose, we’ll get an exceptional recap.
Hilarious…

In other news DJ Johnson might pull off the US Open.

per Kenny Roda – Festus Ezeli will start for Warriors tonite
He’s been pretty bad in the finals. The Warriors seem fed up with him.
Iggy is done
Nope. Warming up.
That’s not what I meant.
theres pic on Twitter of fans in the parking garages downtown just to catch the game on big screens in Gateway…so awesome!
Biggest douche in ‘sports’…
Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 8h8 hours ago
Other than GSW/Cavs fans, Lakers/Clips fans have the most at stake tonight. LeBron can’t move to LA w/o delivering Cleveland a title first.
Funny how much BS doesn’t get it for being such a smart guy typically…
he’s pissed his Celtics suck now and his other ‘home’ team sucks too
He likes to troll Cleveland. I’m ignoring it.
exactly. Even he doesn’t really believe that. It’s less annoying the Elhassan hating on Cleveland all the time.
Elhassan is the absolute worst. He brings nothing to the table. (I think Simmons is pretty terrible, too…he became self parody at least 4 years ago, and he doesn’t even remotely realize it)

25 minutes till tip off…so crazy…have a feeling both teams could be a bit off for first few minutes due to nerves and adrenaline…so don’t freak out…still think either way the winning team will have 10+ points…GO CAVS!!!

#givehimthepulitzer
Soon we’ll find out if the NBA is, in fact, rigged. If the Cavs win, RIGGED. #Ayesha

Hope the officiating is unbiased. Steve Kerr has been doing a lot of lobbying:

Love that there’s at least a few Cavs fans at Oracle!
https://twitter.com/ESPNNBA/status/744672726896476160
Love seeing all these people take over Cleveland. Should be like that every weekend. Great people.
https://twitter.com/TVTye/status/744667406509969408
Would love to be there. If we win, hope things stay under control.
Watching warm ups on ESPN. Anyone else see JR arrive dressed to the nines in a three piece suit? Heard him talk the other night about every kid dreaming about this. Would love to see him go off.
https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/744663140131028994
Love it. Like an assassin about to go to work.
Me too. I love JR, mostly because of how he got his live and career together when he joined up with LeBron.
Did you know the Cavs almost drafted JR, but took Luke Jackson (?) instead because they thought JR would be a bad influence on LBJ? Think of how history would look if that idiot GM had not given away Boozer and drafted JR.
Interesting. Clearly, Lebron influenced JR. Just read article about Lebron and being a father on cleveland.com. Can see him being a role model as a father for many of the players.
I am looking forward to Cols saying “I told you so!”.
CtB should set up a “Cols reward registry” for unfaltering optimism. Put me down for a dozen 16 oz. Modelos.
LOL if the Cavs win tonight I definitely owe Cols a beer or two.

Dude. EG. What an intro. It gave me goosebumps. So excited to spend tonight with you guys.
Can’t wait!
In 3.5 hrs the Cavs will be champions!!!
LeBron on teen titans. Has to be a sign.
A sobbing J.R. holding the Larry O’Brien trophy would be so awesome.
And you must see this video before the game
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bhufDeyC9zY
Oh man. These hype videos keep getting better
Full moon gives LeBron a perfect jumper?
The adrenaline has been pumping all day. Let’s go Cavs!
Hope we win it for him tonight EG.
Before I tuned out my phone for tonight I wanted to say thanks for the wonderful work this season. No one deserves it more than us..
Thanks for that, EG!!! My mom passed in LeBron’s rookie season. She was the number one sports fan of the house. My dad would often go sailing on Sundays knowing that he should take more time before coming home if the Browns lost. Listening to Joe Tait in my mom’s car was standard. She asked me what I thought about that kid from Akron who somehow ended up on the cover of SI. If LeBron and the Cavs win it, it makes me happy to know that she got to see the player that ended the curse. It’s still her… Read more »
Fantastic intro, EG. I also share a strong bond with my dad over the love of Cleveland sports. I can’t wait for tonight!
oh man – got me tearing up EG. God Bless your Dad. And Happy Father’s day to you.
Superb intro for the live thread, EG. I like your dad’s quote a lot on caring about Cleveland. LET’S GO CAVS !!!!!!!
Wow. EG. That was so great. I hope they win for you and all others whose fathers failed to live to see a Cavs chip.
Vegas has moved the line down to 4.5. money split nearly 50/50. Cavs still smart money bet and sharps have been going all in on CLE over the past 12 hours. My nerves are shot and it’s only 3:35pm CDT.
Is there way to listen to Cavs commentators and not the national media broadcasters for this game ? . I’m glad it’s at 8pm which means one less hour to wait…. come on Cavs #allin
