Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls
2016-12-02The Cavs kick off a three game road trip in Chicago tonight. During their previous two games/losses, Cleveland has looked awful playing winning ball only in the opening minutes before slowly giving away their lead and forgetting why turnovers, lazy defense, and ISO ball are ineffective. Tonight is a good chance to bounce back. Fans will get to see if Tyronn Lue was able to get through to anybody during the layoff yesterday.
Chicago’s starting line up of Jimmy Butler, Dwyane Wade, Rajon Rondo, Taj Gibson, and Robin Lopez are all non-proven threats from downtown, so Cleveland should pack the paint and hang tough. And, for everyone citing Wades 37% shooting from downtown, just go to basketball reference and remember he shot 15.9% from deep last season. Same with Jimmy Butler. He’s shooting 40% from beyond the arc so far this season, but he ended last season at 31.2%.
Defensively is where this Bulls team makes their mark. Everyone on the team is capable and their starting group is downright nasty. They’re going to make the Cavs feel it when they drive to the rim. Taj Gibson may even kick someone if provoked enough. Ask Delly about that. And, Wade always seems to be around where guys are falling down accidentally. Chicago is currently seven in opponent’s points allowed giving up just 98.8 per game.
The Cavs need this win tonight. They need to show they remember how to focus on one end of the floor. Slipping on both is a guaranteed way to lose. Slipping up on just one side is bad, but the Cavs have enough talent to do that and still win.
Three Things to Watch
–J.R. Smith has been taking hits in the media and scored just three points against the Clippers. Lue probably sat him down again. I want to see him come out and just take what he’s given offensively. I want to see him lock down Wade or Butler and show he’s worth his contract even when his shot isn’t falling.
-LeBron James needs to have an all around good game tonight. During the past two losses, Cleveland has had just 29 total assists. To put that number into perspective, remember they’ve had 30 assists in single games twice this year. The King orchestrates the offensive side of the ball. He needs to stop turning it over, and needs to show effort on the defensive end by getting steals to lead the team in transition for easy buckets.
-Kyrie Irving isn’t a defensive mastermind, but against Rondo he should be. Watch for him to go under the pick all night long denying passing lanes and layups. Kyrie often gives as much as he takes, that shouldn’t be the case tonight. He scored 12 points at the rim against DeAndre Jordan. Robin Lopez and Taj Gibson aren’t as good as Jordan, so he should be making beautiful love to the back board all night long.
Mike Dunleavy is out for the Cavs with a concussion. Doug McDermott, Michael Carter Williams, and Paul Zipser are out for the Bulls.
I honestly think if the Cavs don’t cut this lead in half by the end of the quarter, this game is over…
More of that give and go please…
Meanwhile… Rondo with near trip double 10/9/9
It really hasn’t been fun watching the Cavs play of late. They look like they expect to simply show up and win and are surprised when people play them tough.
Exactly. They are just trying to outscore the opposing team most nights.
Getting out of hand… not sure why they have gotten so much away from the drive and kick game…
I think they are trying the drive and turnover game…a little early season experimentation…
Modified Kraken…

Is th scouting report out on these guys or are they just going through the motions?
I don’t know, but this is at least the 4th straight lackluster game. They beat the Sixers, but there wasn’t much impressive from that game.
Much more decisive from Love on that shot…
CLEVELAND WITH THE THIRD QUARTER BLUES AGAIN.
Outscored 15-6…
Starting to look like a replay of the last two games to start the second half…
Yeah. Time for a timeout.
Fantastic layup by TT.
The Cavs seem to be afraid to touch people.
Does anyone really care about Looney Tunes anymore? Seems like they’re trying waaaaay too hard to bring Space Jam back…
Um no. I bet the animaniacs are more relevant.
Halftime discussion: Why does Draymond keep kicking people?
http://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/18190467
Because he’s a jackass…
Natural. Shooting. Motion.
Amazing to me that the Cavs have shot 56% and lead by only one…
Well with the horrid Cavs defense that’s to be expected.
Now 50 of Bulls 59 points scored in the paint… Taj Gibson 8-8 for 18 points…
I really believe the scouting of most teams report against the Cavs is attack the paint. The Bucks did it and tonight the Bulls are doing the same.
It’d be mine.

What happened on that last Gibson dunk?
check the Vine below
Not that one. The one where they turned it over under their own basket.
Love got stripped — didn’t know someone was behind him. Ball went to Gibson for the dunk.
Actually, I think he was bounce passing it to JR and JR didn’t see it…
Thanks. Espn never replayed
So many mental mistakes by Cavs…
Jesus h. The officiating is as bad as the D
I don’t know about that foul call…

Now THAT’s how you finish a break!

Maybe that bucket will get Kev going…
I might throw up from all of these Bron & Wade montages…
46 of Bulls 51 points are in the paint… that’s gotta be some kind of record…
I thought the same lol.
Their longest make is from about 12 feet.

These are not particularly good shots…
Very few foul calls, but other calls like defensive/offensive three seconds, carries being called – strange
That’s the first time I think I’ve ever seen an offensive three seconds immediately followed by a defensive three seconds by the same team…
That should have been clear path. No one in front of LeBron.
Bulls shot chart looks like someone spilled a can of paint in the…paint.
Anyone want to guard the hoop? Anyone?

Plus one for it being Bueller’s hometown.
I always aim for synergy…
It’s unbelievable, the bulls have 40 of their 49 points in layups basically.
Cavs gotta clean up turnovers, otherwise I like the way this game is going.
Cavs shooting 65%… and up by just 6…
Can you please check who’s winning the points in the paint?
Bulls… 38-30
Cavs already have more assists in the first 18 minutes than they did in last night’s whole game.
Just a little bit of defense, and they’d be up double digits…
How many layups are the Bulls going to get?
Both teams playing at All Star game pace tonight.
DEEP FRYE!
https://vine.co/v/5U3Ebug5Yte
Taj Gibson has not missed…
This officiating crew is the opposite of the one last night… First free throws of the game just happened…
Well it’s not like either team has been overly physical.
True… but neither team has been selling cheap contact either…
Like the Bulls jerseys : the Columbus Bulls.
Great catch by Irving
This Bron-Frye line up may be much more effective tonight with Love so cold.
Great pass from LBJ to CFrye for the drive and dunk! 7-0 run…
SHUMP!
KLove really struggling. Needs some easy looks to develop rhythm, gotta run some off ball screens for him
One more from earlier: No resistance.
https://vine.co/v/5U3T5UbI0Qh
From earlier: The third of JR’s three triples in the opening minutes.
https://vine.co/v/5U3TmQOtnKz
Is the ball greased or something?
Cavs stuck on 31 since LBJ and Kyrie went out at the 3:20 mark…
This high-energy, high-scoring quarter is running out of gas.
Six turnovers already for the Cavs…
You want to score against the Cavs? Just attack the paint. Again the opposing team is scoring layups at will against the Cavs “defense”.
Thanks for the Vines Phil! I’m in and out tonight…
No problem. I may be in and out myself, but I’ll do what I can.
Shump’s got the high top fade going again…
TT AND ONE
https://vine.co/v/5U3tiEv77jF
Kyrie AND ONE
https://vine.co/v/5U3TEpPWe7K
Weirdly high scoring game for a Cavs/Bulls tilt…
It’s the Hoiberg era, defense no longer the focus
TT very active on the offensive glass so far…
A little Kyrie magic
https://vine.co/v/5U3jUAY7prd
Still not a lot of D being played…
Kev having a tough time with Taj…
Another one!
JR Swish… cautiously optimistic…
ISO ball won us the Finals. Do not forget.

Only 12 assists last night. How’d that work out?
Dig the headline pic, DW!
Espn discussing : who has a better future, KAT or the Zinger. Talk about your arguments that won’t be solved for ten years.
They might have to add Embiid to that argument soon…
Man, I miss Delly.
ThOSSe 7 points and 35 % FG!! Nope. Nope nope.
Out of town so thrilled the Cavs are on ESPN. Let’s hope we get better announcing than webber and Miller last night
Breen is good… Mark Jackson, eh…
