Live Thread: Cavs vs. Lakers (#TheBigShortage)
2016-12-17On Sustainability Awareness Night at the Q, the Cavs will get their first idea of whether or not their big man situation is sustainable. With the season (career?) ending ACL injury to backup paint patroller Chris “Birdman” Andersen, the Cavaliers are now about as thin at the five as they are at the one. Sure, they’ve got plenty of options given the small-ball lineups they can run with, and there’s still decent rotation of big bodies (TT, CFrye and KLove in a pinch) they can throw out there. Fortunately, they also have the NBA equivalent of a Swiss Army knife in LeBron James who can play the five just as well as the one (and everything in between), serving as the ultimate safety net. Still, the team’s adventures with backup PG experiments will likely now also extend to backup C scenarios until David Griffin can devise another alternative.
Speaking of big men, their opponent tonight features an old familiar face at the five… the Russian Bear, Timofey Mozgov. The former Cavs center returns to Cleveland with his new team, the Los Angeles Lakers, and is having a decent year for the purple and gold averaging 8.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in 21.6 minutes per game. Before the game, the Cavs will take a special moment to award Mozzy his NBA Championship ring for his contributions to last year’s team. Ty Lue, for one, sounds like he misses having the big fella around…
“He’s one of my favorite guys,” Tyronn Lue said following Friday’s team practice. “For a guy to be a starter and play such a big role and have an impact on our team the way he did two years ago and then in the playoffs last year not being able to play, but he was the first guy off the bench cheering, running onto the floor, jumping up and down when guys hit threes, you just love to have guys on your team like that. We miss him around here.”
Other familiar faces with the Lakers are former Herculoid (and interim Golden State head coach) Luke Walton, and local product (and son of legendary Cav Larry Nance) Larry Nance, Jr. Walton has the Lakers back in the realm of respectability this season, and even got them out to a 10-10 start before struggling through an eight game losing streak. They turned things around last night against the Sixers, but that might make for some weary legs in a back-to-back against an extremely well rested Cavs team (looking at you Kyrie). Nance Jr. has also found a resurgence in his game of late, now that he’s healthy. He had 11 boards against Philly last night, and had possibly the dunk of the year so far in his previous game against the Nets…

As mentioned, the Cavs should be incredibly ready for this game. They haven’t played since Wednesday, but LeBron James and Kevin Love haven’t since Tuesday. And, Kyrie has had an entire week off (practice notwithstanding), having not played since the win over Charlotte last Saturday. Despite the loss of Birdman in practice, the Cavs will have their full complement of other players available. It’s possible in the short term that the team could call up C Eric Moreland from the Canton Charge, especially on the heels of the block party he threw last night against the 87ers…
The Cavs have won their last four meetings with the Lakers (every game in the LeBron 2.0 era), and this will be the first time they’ll be seeing them in the post-Kobe era. One thing to watch for is whether LBJ will vault past Moses Malone into 8th place on the NBA’s all time scoring list. He needs 28 more points to do so.
Probable starting lineup for the Cavs: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson. And for the Lakers: D’Angelo Russell, Nick Young, Luol Deng, Julius Randle, Timofey Mozgov.
Prediction: The rested Cavs get up big on the weary Lakers and roll 117-105.
Catch all the action starting at 7:30 on Fox Sports Ohio.
Even Mike Dunleavy Fathead Night vs. the Grizz the other night can’t get him off the pine.
Nice it looks like JR getting his stroke back. Shump has shot 3s well this year, but it’s usually not good when he has more three attempts than JR…..like tonight
Real lethargic first half. We didn’t focus on d for more than about 5 possessions. Thankfully the lakers cannot play d at all. Looks like an average pickup game at times for all the intensity being put displayed by either team.
Mostly on D though… outside of that burst to start the second quarter…
Yeah they look ok on offense. But even then they have been walking it up. I think the Lakers allergy to defense helps. Then again, I may have gotten used to seeing Memphis d which would color my perception of average d.
Lakers will run out of gas eventually having played last night…
EG…. can’t see the game… but I get the distinct impression that Love gets it going inside better if his shot not working from 3 in recent games. Look to you that that’s the case?
It’s interesting… he seems to get it going inside regardless of how his outside shot is falling… just generally more active underneath this year…
Gotcha… thanks for the scouting report!
We played about 6-7 minutes of D tonight. Need to crank it up longer. James definitely in chill mode…..maybe from not feeling well?
Bron would normally have been in there for the last two minutes of half… must not be feeling well…
Randle is a beast
Bad D the last 90 seconds from Cavs…
Julius Randle is a load… the new version of Z-Bo?
JR heat check…
SWISH! On Kyrie’s 8th assist of the half!
Kyrie 30 foot heat check…
Cavs match the Lakers 7-0 run with one of their own…
UNCLE DREW!

How do you find this stuff?!
Too much free time…
Wow Kyrie!

Lou Williams is officially annoying me this game…
That Kyrie assist to RJ…

Irving a triple double tonight? 7/7/5 already
Love Nance wearing a Cavs hat at his son’s game.
Because he wants to keep living in NE Ohio peacefully haha
CHANNING!
Kyrie is magic…
Kyrie has been great creating for and finding other guys tonight so far.
7 assists already…
How did Russ get 26 & 22? That’s mind blowing.
Doing stuff like this…

What the what
Wow
DO WE SEE KSHRIMP TONIGHT (HOPEFULY ) —-DISAPPOINTED TO STILL SEE ” THE MAMBA ” IN A CAVS UNIFORM
Some pretty ball movement out there also…
Run ends at 15-0
Cavs with ALL the defense right now…
LBJ just almost went glitchbot 3000 on that one…
So many wide open shots against the Lakers. If we made our usual clip we would be up by 10 in spite of giving up 31 in the first. I think whoever thought Lebron is sick is right. Think I have seen him cough a few times.
11-0 run by the Cavs to take control…
Unselfish play by KI. Probably had a layup but dishes to RJ
Wow… I hope DW is watching this… Kyrie just dished an easy try at the basket to RJ for a wing three!
Yeah, LBJ is not right if he can’t throw it down… Kyrie there to pick up the slack…
Shump looks really active!
Shump off the dribble!
Just pound these scrubs already. LeBron again looking uninterested.
Somebody mentioned earlier that he might be sick…
SHUMP!

If LBJ made his Technical free throws… he’d have already passed Moses Malone…
Free throws are so dang boring.
Lakers and Bucks are not getting much bang for their dollars on our scrubs
Great baseline drive by KLove!
Like that he can make reverses again. Was really pretty.
Really heavy on the whistles here tonight.
Lou Williams’ underarm checkerboard tattoo is distracting…
Too many bad fouls this quarter
Nice backdown by Love with some love from the rim…
Uggh Liggins. Sloppy on d so far.
That seemed to be before the act of shooting…
Be nice if YSU can comeback.
I feel like this game is being played at half speed for some reason on my league pass.
Gonna be hard to not give this guy the MVP if he keeps doing stuff like this…

I think LeBron is sick. Not really touching the ball like he normally does. McMenamin tweeted that he had to leave the pregame huddle and run to the locker room
I do not miss watching Mozgov lumbering around.
Great pass from Kyrie to TT!
I think a great new edition to the offense is summed up as “Thompson bucket- Irving assist. If he can find Tristan on a roll or cutting, he’s gonna find his 16 footer even more open
Dumb foul by JR there….
Seems like Luke Walton was the real genius behind golden state
SWISH!
Nice to see Mozzy back in the Q! Fun Mozgov quote: “If he dies, he dies”
When the Cavs run, they are virtually unstoppable….
They have gotten decent shots and they just haven’t fallen, but they look really lethargic.
That’s what happens when you give guys rest…./s
Letting Randle get inside too easily…
TT with an excellent transition lob to LBJ!
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/810286087885029376
Whole team looks rusty…
Mozzy looked good on that hook…
Kyrie rusty?
Great seeing the team showing so much love for Moz
Everyone but LeBron…
Saw that. I will bet LeBron gives Delly some love when he gets the ring.
Wow! Westbrook with 22 assists today…
I miss Timo
Awesome to see!
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/810281841664081921
THAT WAS FREAKING AWESOME!!! Love how everyone showed love to Mozgov!!!
Moz went nuts on the court after Nance’s monster dunk. Nance’s height on the dunk was unearthly. On Hey Windy, BW said the best two dunks he ever saw in a game were the Nance dunk and LeBron’s “no regard for human life” against Boston in the playoffs.
Looks like D’Angelo not playing…
WATCHED THE CHARGE GAME LAST NIGHT —-NO DOUBT MORELAND HAS SOME RAW POTENTIAL ( ALSO SOME ROUGH EDGES ) WE ARE ALSO VERY AWARE OF PLAYERS PLAYING GREAT IN D-LEAGUE AND BECOMING PRETTY MUCH A “NO SHOW–UP AT THE BIG SHOW ” —WHO CAN SAY “MAMBA ” THE FASTEST –DUE TO ALCK OF BIG MEN ON THE ROSTER AND IT IS THE MOZ’S HOMECOMING / REVENGE GAME –LOOK FOR HIM TO PUT UP SOME SOLID NUMBERS TONIGHT
