Breaking: Cavs Reportedly Finalizing Deal To Acquire Kyle Korver
2017-01-05According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks are in the process of finalizing a deal that would send veteran shooting guard, Kyle Korver to the Cavs. He’s averaging 9.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists per game this season for Atlanta, and is shooting 44% (40% from three).

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical now reporting that Mike Dunleavy Jr. is possibly being moved onto a third team with Korver coming to Cleveland.
Sources: Atlanta and Cleveland are finalizing terms on Korver deal, with Mike Dunleavy Jr., likely moving onto a third team through Atlanta.

Brian Windhorst reporting that the Cavs are apparently making a separate deal with Portland to swap first round picks to avoid the Stepien Rule…
Cavs are making a separate deal with Blazers. They will trade their 2017 1st to get their 2018 first back, sources said.

Cavs will be sending 2019 protected 1st to Atlanta and Mike Dunleavy in deal. sources said.

Comments from Kyle Korver following Atlanta’s win over New Orleans tonight (a game where he was held out due to trade discussions)…
Kyle Korver to press postgame: "It's hard to leave [Atlanta] behind, [But] obviously it's a great opportunity for me to go to Cleveland."

Always thought he’d make a better tight end than a basketball player.
For all his warts, really enjoyed those lob plays and baseline cut posters. Best of luck 3GeeService!
Can someone explain to me how the early reporting doesn’t violate the Stepien rule? We did not draft in the first round in 2016. We own our 2017 first round pick. Portland owns our 2018 first round pick. Early reports say we’re shipping our 2019 first round pick to Atlanta. I understand that not picking in 2018 and 2019 is a violation of the Stepien rule… If we trade Portland our 2017 pick in exchange for our 2018 pick to correct the above, we won’t have drafted in the first round in 2016 and won’t be drafting in the first… Read more »
I’m sure it resets after the draft is over. Teams trade draft picks after the lottery all the time. I think the Stephen rule prevents a team from trading away multiple future firsts in a row.
Tom, correct me if I’m wrong, but what I think you’re referring to is when a team makes a selection using their pick and then trades the rights to that player to a different team. Sort of like what we did in 2015 when we selected Tyus Jones and traded him to Minnesota on draft night. This strategy isn’t a violation of the Stepien rule because we technically made the selection…and subsequently were free to not have any picks in 2016 (in which we owned 3 picks at various points in time but traded them away (Mozgov, Love, and Jack/Zeller… Read more »
I was referring more to the fact that I think teams trade picks a lot around draft day so I assume the stepien rule applies to future drafts, not the current draft with respect to the previous year
Alternatively, that might be just because they’re waiting to see what their position is and/or whether or not a protection kicks in as a result of the ping pong balls.
I’d need an example to dig into the details.
Found the answer to my question: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q87
“The Stepien rule applies only to future first round picks. For example, if this is the 2011-12 season, then a team can trade its 2012 first round pick without regard to whether they had traded their 2011 pick, since their 2011 pick is no longer a future pick. But they can’t trade away both their 2012 and 2013 picks, since both are future picks. Teams sometimes work around this rule by trading first round picks in alternate years, or by giving one team the right to swap picks with the other.”
Richard, I didn’t get this either, at first. The Stepien rule only applies to FUTURE draft picks. If wait until after the draft each year, you can trade all your future 1sts to infinity if you do it one at a time after the draft.
So, once 2016 passes, it doesn’t matter. 2017 & 2018. We have to have one of those picks. If we get 2018, we can deal 2019.
Chalmers is recovering from injury. That’s why we wait. McMenemin has the current framework of the deal as Mo inclusive. Lue making a point to show reporters that McRae is at shoot-around.
http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/18419056/lebron-james-says-cleveland-cavaliers-need-point-guard
Lebron saying we still need a point guard. I just don’t know who that would be.
Hollis Thompson is there for the taking, however. Young, athletic 3 and D wing player. Fits so many Cavs need for youth, athleticism, and energy off the bench.
Hollis Thompson can shoot sometimes and he’s young. But he’s not athletic and not good on defense. We already have JR, Shump, Liggins as 3 and D wings.
MARRRIOOOOOO CHALLLLLLLLLLLLLLMERS!
Sounds good to me.
He’s been available for a long time now and Cavs (Lebron) haven’t shown much interest.
Cavs run a very different offense than what Korver is used to in Atlanta. A lot less off ball movement and screens. Mostly pick and roll penetration by Lebron and Kyrie, and then they make the read for a kick out to a shooter. In some ways, it’s a lot less work for Korver. He can be more of a stand still, catch and shoot player rather than running off screens all the time. Defenses will be stretched to near oblivion. Lebron has never been surrounded by so many shooters. Korver should come off bench, Liggins should stay starter. Lebron… Read more »
Yep. Lue already said Korver off the bench. Outstanding111
That’s actually untrue. They a lot of off-ball curl screens for shooters, but they’ve not been featuring it nearly as much without JR. Kyrie sometimes gets the ball in these sets, but he’s been on the ball more than off lately.

5. J.R. Smith, 38.2 percent
6. Kyrie Irving, 38.0 percent

9. Iman Shumpert, 34.5 percent
Stole this from FTS,
5 year sample:
490 corner threes attempted, 245 made, 50.0% conversion rate.
I cannot believe we have JR and Korver and Frye.
Yeah, Liggins with the starters works as the lack of O isn’t an issue & his 3PT shot is OK. With some of the other lineups it can get tricky (Liggs + Shump + RJ + TT + Ky/James/Love). Our #s with Liggs + the starters are off the charts. Plus, Korver is 35, let’s not overplay him. He’s for June. Perhaps he can cut RJ & James’ load some. He can play some 3 as well.
Just in case anyone was wondering how Ty plans to use KK…
“We’ll just keep starting him and if it happens, bring (Korver) off the bench and see what happens,” Lue said. “I like Liggs guarding those point guards, picking up full court. His defensive presence on the floor. And then bring in a shooter off the bench, early or late, depending on however the flow is the game is going. It will be good for us.”
Love it. As far as I can remember the Cavs have never had a real 6th man or any instant offense coming off the bench. 4 minutes to go in the 1st and starters getting a little weary/bench players coming in…boom Korver running off of screens like a madman while LeBron gets to slow down a bit
I don’t understand why people are freaking out about the pick we sent Atlanta. Its a heavily protected first and we get our 2018 pick back from the blazers in exchange for this year’s pick, which will likely come after 25. As long as LeBron James is ambulatory and playing for this team, that pick is going to fall outside the top 20 in 2019. We are deep in salary hell and any guaranteed contract for a player with unproven talent is just going to hamstring our ability to acquire players the coaching staff trusts moving forwards. Yes, we need… Read more »
He’s the #1 spot up guy out there. In the league. Someone will pay. The D isn’t that poor. I read TS% of 84% on wide open looks. Filthy.
Yep. Freaking out over draft picks is so dumb.
Do we have a source that Mo is traded? Saw it reported early, thought details were still cloudy.
There is zero downside to this deal. Love it so much.
I just had a thought on a potential existential crisis for many Cavs fans: what if Cavs play Bucks in playoffs, and Delly “accidentally” rolls on Korver’s ankle, breaking it? How would people react? LOL. Horford’s sistet might start tweeting again.
Of course, since Korver will be, like, our 6 best player it wouldn’t matter.
Now wouldn’t that be something. Fingers crossed that never happens. I want nothing to taint my fan love for Delly.
Could happen. Delly is know around the NBA for being a dirty player.
I don’t want any part of the Bucks in the playoffs
We’d sweep the Bucks.
Best part was getting rid of Mo. What a freaking nuisance.
Definitely glad to get rid of that black hole contract. I know Mo is just trying to get his money, but it was taking up a roster spot and cap space and we can’t afford that when we are trying to make it 2 straight.
You mean NBA Champion Mo?
Much like NBA champion Delly.
Colsbot does not compute.
Huh? Delly played pretty good last year from December-March. Then he disappeared only to resurface in Milwaukee where he’s been shooting 30% or so. He’s still an NBA Champ!
Has anyone read how Woj always seems to get the trade details first for virtually every team? It’s almost like he has some pact with the GMs that they give him the info first. I can recall very few trades that last several years that weren’t broken by The Vertical, and then every following article by other papers/media outlets always say “……as first reported by The Vertical.”
Yes and it rubs some people the wrong way because they see Woj as being more of a PR rep for some teams than an unbiased reporter. There’s a reason Woj had no scoop on LBJ back to Cavs – years of negative pieces about LeBron and Gilbert.
I want to see the Cavs pick up Tim Frazier now that he’s out of the rotation in Nola. Need depth at PG!!!
If Griff doesn’t win GM of the year for the 3rd straight year it will be yet another travesty. Don’t rob him again!
Griffin is really, really good at his job. I think we should at Hollis Thompson.
First week of January really is Griff’s hot spot. Guy loves making deals this week.
Done and leaving. Forked. Hope the swap for ancients is in our favor. Judging by Korver’s year thus far, it is.
35 is better than 36 with back problems…FWIW
I won’t miss him. Nothing against MD, but as you have memed numerous times, he has been stuck by the metaphorical fork this whole year.
I like Kyle korver. He’ll work hard, can shoot from more than just the corners, and if he does nothing more than spread the floor by threat alone, that’s an asset.
E.G., Remember when we a had this lil convo about Atlanta rebuilding? Told ya’ haha. Kidding.. Anyways ever since we swept them in 2015 I’ve always thought they were going nowhere and now they do see it too. I won’t be surprised if Millsap is in Houston 2weeks later. I like Coach Bud. But to win in this league, you’ve got to have a superstar anchoring you. Game Changer. They don’t have one. Dwight doesn’t count anymore. They are the Spurs of the east 2 seasons ago. There’s a lot of similarities, but the Spurs have Kawhi and the undying… Read more »
This is definitely the smart way to go for them… they should find someone to dump Dwight on, although I think they’re probably stuck with him…
The only long term guy they have on the roster is probably Schroder… they made a mistake paying Bazemore IMHO… They should get a decent haul for Millsap if they can get a bit of a bidding war going between Toronto, Boston and Sacto….
Also added to my theory then was when they didn’t re-up Carroll back then. He’s been a glue to them. Even playing hurt in the playoffs. That’s a mistake.
Both Boston and Toronto is a good fit. But he won’t move them past towards us.
If LeBron plays 5 or 6 more years, Griffin will have traded every other year’s first-round pick through about 2060 by the time he’s done. Or maybe only through 2045 if Cedi becomes a star.
As long as they have the 2023 pick for the Bronny draft…
Will LeBron be the best player in the league in 2023? I say no. He’ll keep the crown for the next 2 seasons then it will become a big scrum
I’d go for a back up defensive big after this. I’m all in for sticking with Felder and Shump share back up PG duties. Lebron doesn’t like playing big too much on the regular season. If we go after a back up PG, that would probably make Lebron spend more time at the big. We’re thinner on the frontline than the perimeter with TT as our only “rim protector”.
I’ll be Debbie Downer. I think this is throwing away a first round pick, of which we have fewer and fewer. As someone mentioned, in the playoffs, the bench is shortened, and I don’t see how he’d get much run since he can’t really guard anyone anymore. FWIW, Liggins has a higher real/plus minus, for example, than Korver. San Antonio has sustained greatness by not tossing draft picks away for a short term gain that barely moves the needle. They use their picks. We’ve won a title, we exhausted our assets, and unless the trade makes us significantly better or… Read more »
Cleveland is counting on buying draft picks.
You can’t realistically buy first rounders.
David Griffin can do anything…
Why do you, and some others, think that Korver sucks on defense? He does not dude.
Korver’s defense isn’t very good. Why do you think it isn’t? He’s 35 as well, which isn’t a death sentence, but it does mean he’s slower and less athletic than he used to be.
“Isn’t very good” doesn’t equal being a sieve. There’s levels to it. At least on the player he replaced he’s definitely an upgrade on defense.
Gonna play devil’s advocate to your Debbie Downer JoeyB… Prediction: Korver on this team will be like Ray Allen when he joined the Heat Also, of course Ligs’ plus minus is higher… he’s been mostly on the floor with LBJ, Kyrie and Kev for his minutes… San Antonio was a different kind of team that was built a different way from the beginning. The Cavs are a superteam that came together in a short time frame and has the onus of not wasting the remaining prime LBJ years… What would be the good of drafting players since Ty won’t play… Read more »
Devils advocate for JoeyB- Channing Frye and Kyrie Irving are worse defenders than Korver. Cavs don’t care about defense.
Devils advocate for EG- RPM isolates individuals. Factoring out LeBron as a teammate is the impetuous for the stat.
Devils advocate for JoeyB in light of my devil’s advocate to EG – sample size way too small for RPM to be trustworthy at this juncture, especially for Liggins.
If Mo Williams plays 5 minutes in game 7, I’m sure Lue can add a few more for Korver
Kyle Korver is an all star 2 years ago and arguably the most important piece of the Atlanta offense (credit to Budenholzer tho) that put them #1 in the east in that season. There’s no way he fell on a cliff all of a sudden.
He didn’t fall off a cliff, but losing teague and replacing horford with Howard killed them. Cleveland overpaid a bit for a rental, but with JR’s injury return uncertain, Shump’s shooting falling apart, and Jefferson’s shot betraying him, Cleveland had to do something to shore up their wing shooting.
I believe KK is unrestricted. If we win that 2nd title I don’t care if he chase the money after.
A little late to the party. I like this deal, just from the players involved perspective. Can’t find the details of how it will affect our future cap and movement situations, it’s hampered anyways. Kyle will definitely give us a lot of depth. LBJ’s assist average might skyrocket lol. I’ve seen Korver play good defense so it’s not that he’s just a more potent Dunleavy. He’s a smart guy. Not in any way to slight JR, but IMO, he’s a bit better on both sides of the floor overall than JR because he’s a more disciplined shooter and defender. If… Read more »
I think this is a solid plug for the JR gap while JR is out. We needed depth there, and Korver gives us slightly better shooting than JR gives us — but with worse D. I think the big “win” is this will help us hold the top spot in the East while being able to manage the Big Three’s minutes and cope with injuries. However, I don’t see this as some huge piece that changes things all that much in playoffs. Once JR comes back, Korver gives us great depth in playoffs. But playoffs always involve shortened benches (especially… Read more »
Not “slightly” significant.
Yes. That is fair. And I sure hope he pushes up to 45% or so with Cavs.
This is the most reasonable analysis I have seen about this trade thus far and indicates Cavs brass is not as sanguine as might be believed about seeding in the East. I would imagine Lue also had some input into the trade.
oh lordy. warriors fans going nuts on the their sub reddit on how unfair this deal is. uhhhhhh Kevin Durant…
Haha. Great point. As always, Ws fans are worst. I used to live in Bay Area, and I can tell you 80% of their fans weren’t fans before 2015.
We can out 3 PT shoot them & they know it. Steph is the #1, he can do it off the bounce or spot up. Ditto Durant. Spotting up, Korver & Frye are 1-2 in the league. We have more shooters. At least one at every position. Kyrie, Korver, JR, Love, Frye. JFJ. James is 35%+. Shump is cooling. Still, that’s 7 guys w/ out him. Six are freaking deadly & James clutch.
Korver gives us a skillset that we don’t currently have which is a guy that does that crazy sprinting all over the court until he gets a pick at the last second and catches and launches in one motion. Korver does it. Reddick does it. JR doesn’t. I gotta imagine that having an entirely new knife in the drawer will be highly valuable for us.
Man I’m salivating. Lol. Non of the former mentioned does a last-second-corner-fadeaway-3 like JR does tho.
I’m reading that Dunleavy is going to Hawks and elsewhere that Mo is being traded to Hawks. Can anyone clarify this?
Don’t think we know for certain. Mo only does not work, salary-wise. Dunleavy alone for Korver does, as does Mo + Mike for KK. If the Hawks are taking two players, they’d need to waive someone, unless they can find a 3rd team to take one of them. If it was KK for Mike D & the pick straight up, I don’t get why the Hawks need a 3rd team (at least right away). They could just take Dunleavy & look for a taker until 2/23. Though, we have to have the deal with Portland done 1st so we can… Read more »
Thanks Jason. If we’re getting KK for Dunleavy and a pick…would be nice to attach Mo that this in some way and free up another roster spot.
should read “attach Mo to this”….getting late!
When Lebron inevitably gets a statue in Downtown Cleveland, can we get two mini statues of David Griffin and Dan Gilbert flanking him? They have been so huge during this run as well. And they are quite short in stature anyway. So maybe lifesize will do.
Maybe Lebron could be unleashing a double Kraken, with Dave and Dan being the assist men.
The sculptor can do Griffin and Gilbert to scale, and they will be mini’s next to LeBron. Probably the shortest owner-GM combo in the league.
I’m pretty sure Korver is going to shoot as good or better than Frye. In Atlanta he was playing off Jeff Teague and Demarre. His defense may end up being a bit shaky but he’s going to create ridiculous space for LeBron and Kyrie and knock down trey’s like crazy. How old was Ray Allen with heat? Korver is younger.
I recall similar enthusiasm when Dunleavy was signed. Does someone need to track down the Cols quotes for that one? I will confess to not paying much attention to Hawks or Korver this season. He looked a lot like Dunleavy the few times I watched him last year. And the Cavs inability to make successful non-lottery picks doesn’t matter. It is a scarce asset. Is Korver the best, in terms of player/fit/need, that you can get for it? Does Korver play any D, or do you have to hide him like Kyrie? Who on GS does he guard — Iggy?… Read more »
Was Dunleavy ever in a class with Korver? Also, Jiri Welsh came when the Cavs had the DUMBEST GM in the league. Now they have the SMARTEST. Do you know of any dumb moves DG has made? Dunleavy might have been a swing and a miss, but he cost ZERO, and now makes the Korver trade work. Using his salary in a trade might have been the plan all along. More likely, the plan was to see if Dunleavy could do anything, and if not, use him in a trade. That is called WIN – WIN! Apparently Mo is part… Read more »

OK, so on to the next.
Backup PG or rim-protector? Or both?
Discuss.
So greedy world… ;)
seriously, though, as long as we’re handing out first-round draft picks like Discount Drug Mart coupons, I want to make sure we win another championship or 3.
Realistically, we still need two players. Deron Williams and Koufos?
Great use of Discount Drug Mart!
I’ll take millsap too
For Love ? Milsap for Love will make Cavs even more dangerous.
Nope. Age matters.
As does contract.
With love back to being the 2nd or 3rd best pf in the league, there is no logical or intelligible reason why someone would suggest trading Love for Milsap. There is no other high scoring big man in the league that averages over 20ppg, a double double, and has a true shooting percentage of 60%. On top of that Love’s defensive rotations have been generally very good this season AND he fits way better on offense with this team. You clearly do not watch the cavs very much.

Happy to see Dunleavy go, but color me less than excited by Korver. That first better be heavily protected.
Who would you rather have taking a wide open spot up three?
Wouldn’t Frye be better option given his length, guarded by slower guys and he can get shot off more easily.
Frye is #2 in spot up threes this year… guess who number one is?
Korver, I think. But Korver without ball handling skills will have hard time to get off shots in playoffs compared to Frye. He doesn’t have a quick shot like Ray Allen, Curry, Miller and Klay. Anyway, Korver is a great pick up for Cleveland especially at the time starting back court is missing time..
They added a quality rotation player with an elite skill set that they take advantage of as well as anyone else. The first doesn’t phase me at all. Cavs have made like 2 good draft picks in the last 15 years that weren’t #1 picks. And theyve been in win now mode since the moment the essay was published
what they gave up is nothing, I still don’t get it why Hawks did it.
SO THE BIG QUESTION —DO WE REMOVE THE FORK FROM DUNLEAVY OR LEAVE IT IN THERE —-GIVE ME A PICTURE EVIL

This one is an instant classic.
His statue in the HOF will have a massive fork in it…
David Griffin right now…
If Grif can also get a serviceable back up point guard with our available assets, he will be up there with Harry Houdini. Mo’s switcheroo right before camp really hurt us. If he needed surgery, why wait until right before camp too? Somehow I think Grif will deliver.
If they can get a playable PG or Wing, either one, he’s done a great job. Or if he can get Bogut…not sure how realistic that is. Dallas would give him up, I have no doubt, it’s more the salary stuff…
Why do you want Bogut? I do not understand the wanting for a new big guy. Is it because Birdman is injured? In that case go grab a D-leaguer and give him Birdman’s 5 garbage time minutes a night.
The best reason to get Bogut would be for psychological warfare on GS… and to have someone to set picks on Curry and get Green tossed…
Yep, that too.
Because he can defend, pass, and give any team 15 good minutes. Comparing him to Birdman is ridiculous.
AND YES –YET ANOTHER ” RABBIT BEING PULLED OUT OF THE HAT ” BY GRIFF —-GOTTA LOVE THAT MAN —REALIZE WE ARE SOMEWHAT FORFEITING THE FUTURE —BUT HEY WE ALL KNEW THIS WHEN LEBRON RETURNED AND OH YEAH WE WON A NBA CHAMPIONSHIP LAST YEAR —-GO FOR THE GOLD WHILE YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO GRAB IT !!

Giving up Dunleavy is good news. Korver has fallen off, but right now the Cavs need playable bodies — Dunleavy ain’t that. It’s a good deal as long as they don’t for some insane reason follow it up by getting Rondo. DO NOT GET RONDO FOR ANY REASON.
Hey Mike… I heard they’re getting Rondo…
I wouldn’t trade Dunleavy or Orange Fanta for Rondo. DO NOT GET RONDO OR IT WILL BE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF YOUR LIFE!
jk… just messing with you…
Channing Frye is the second best spot up shooter in the league. 1.53 PPP.
Kyle Korver is 1st, at 1.55.
Dunleavy sure epitomized the definition of not fitting in. And he often looked like he wasn’t having fun either……or not galvanized to use Grif’s jargon. Even with the balky back, there were so many games that in 15-18 minutes of playing time you could not recall anything Mike did.
I agree. He just looked really inflexible/stiff…wouldn’t be surprised if his back surgery was more of a factor than most realized in how poorly he performed for the Cavs. Wish him well though.

I just hope they don’t go after Rondo. I’ve read reports about the Cavs going after him and the guy is just too problematic IMO.
Rondo sucks, is a terrible fit for the Cavs, and will sulk and be a huge PITA. If they pick him up for any reason, the Cavs FO is insane. He should be in China right now. Did I mention that he completely sucks?
Called LeBron a pussy once and refused to shake his hand in 2012 when the heat destroyed the Celtics. I hold a grudge!

What is remarkable is the slow overall unraveling of the Hawks. We all recall in the Hawks 60 win season they were touted as “San Antonio eastern conference” and Coach B was being overly exalted just like Stevens in Boston today. How the falsely touted mighty are falling !
And how dumb it was to give an entire team player of the month. that looks so stupid now.

Yep. I knew there was a reason. That game screamed for another shooter & hat just sat there.

Told you they gave up nothing.
Thought u loved dunleavy, and to paraphrase, ‘don’t count him out.’
