Live Thread: Cavs @ Jazz
2017-01-10The Cavs are in Utah tonight for game three of their six game road trip. They’ve started their past two games out hot. On Sunday, against Phoenix, they put up 41 in the first quarter and led by as many as 20. They won by just four. It was the same in Brooklyn on Friday. They were up by 20 during different points of the game and managed to win by just eight.
LeBron James and Kyrie Irving both had to reach into their bag of tricks during the fourth quarter to beat those teams who have just 20 combined wins. The Cavs didn’t seem focused.
Utah will take advantage of any carelessness Cleveland exhibits. They are 23-16. They’re 5-5 in their last ten, but they’ve been plagued by injury all season and are just a few games into having their full rotation available.
Defensively, the Jazz are anchored by Rudy Gobert (2.6 blocks a night). On the offensive end, George Hill has been putting up a career high 18.5 points and running the team giving 4.2 dimes a night. He’s an amazing defender too; his length will challenge Kyrie or at least funnel him into the paint. Gordan Hayward is above average at all facets of the game and leads them in scoring with 22 a night.
Things to watch
-The Cavs have to attack the Jazz down low, despite them having multiple bigs who can actually protect the rim. If they sit back and launch shots, they will be saving Utah the effort of working on defense. This is huge, because Utah has to use a lot of passes and cuts to get their guys open on the other end of the floor. Tired guys aren’t cutting and they aren’t passing as much, which will help the Cavs on defense.
-Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson have to fight for boards. They need to box out every possession because Derrick Favors and Gobert are beasts on the offensive glass if they aren’t accounted for.
-Love also needs to make the Jazz play him honestly. He can’t forget about the paint. Love has a great chance to get Favors and Gobert into foul trouble, both of them leave their feet quite often.
-And, finally, the Cavs have to focus. Utah is ranked in the top ten in defense and is ranked 12th in offensive efficiency. This team isn’t giving a game away, and if you give them the ball off turnovers that they aren’t forcing, they’ll have a huge advantage.
I’m picking the Cavs tonight, 94-90. This one is going to be a slug fest. Cleveland’s defense will be tested and forced to rotate multiple times as Utah looks for a sliver of space to shoot or drive through. Hopefully, this game is a wake up call and shows the league that Cleveland is just waiting for a challenge, not becoming unfocused during the regular season.
Kyle Korver is available tonight and may make his debut.
LeBron on Korver: " The first thing I told him … was, ‘If you want to fit in, shoot the ball every time you get it.’"

Are you kidding with that bank shot?
Terrible shot by Shump and then he loses his man
Let’s finish this last two well.
JAZZ DICTATING BOTH ENDS OF THE FLOOR
Great play from Frye there.
Finally lets attack Irving. WTF, how is that not a shooting foul?
We’ll take that delay tech.
Lucky shot there for them.
Not looking good for the Cavs now. They need to attack more and try to draw some fouls.
Cavs are awesome this game. Just ask Cols.
Put Liggins in or let Kyrie do some work.
Don’t think the Jazz are even playing that well defensively. Combination of sloppy play by the Cavs along with some poorly timed whistles going the other way….
We gonna lose this one if we don’t get it together. 6 pts in 8 minutes. Down nine.
We are so out of synch. The ugliest basketball in awhile. Still think we will get it going
Seriously, eff these refs.
12 TOs now.
Lucky that wasn’t a TO there.
Not looking great.
Think we get 10 this quarter?
TO fest.
That tech was weak as hell. We tapped it under the hoop.
A real C would help against this team.
3 minutes scorelss. Kev, Ky, & James all in there.
Cavs having a tough time scoring right now.
Wow just 4 pts in half a quarter. Shooting will get better
They are calling moving screens tonight.
We haven’t scored since Felder left.
James returns. KK misses a 3, tough look.
RJ with some goo d help to force that TO. O stagnant.
Jazz with some TOs as well.
Nobody home? Love the bench minutes so far in this game
Ky with a weird TO there.
Cavs offense is so good.
Do you own an optical store that sells rose looked glasses.? O not beautiful tonight so far
Rose “colored”
Love the dribbling. Dribbling is beautiful.
You must have loved Ricky Davis. I have no doubt you’d rather have Ricky than Leb.
OUCH R.J.—” WAS IT SOMETHING I SAID —NO DID “
Still up 1 with Love, James, & Ky watching the start of the quarter (3 minutes).
It would be great if the Cavs can create some turnovers and get Korver some open looks.
Korver is nervous playing with The King.
RJ with a really poor play there. Hate to rag on him.
RJ still stuggling with the deep shots.
Sit RJ down already
RJ has not been shooting so well of late.
Yuck, rj.
Feel the Felder flow through the defense!
Go KShrimp! Two straight good drives.
Feel the Felder!
This lineup is interesting: Felder, Korver, RJ, ,Frye, TT.
yeah, I love it. Let the big 3 catch a breather. Give Kay some burn.
The Jazz are like the Bucks off the Western conference lol. They foul a lot.
8 assists on 10 made baskets in the first. Nice
Korver already rules
Not a geat defensive quarter, but pretty good offensive showing….
Missed some open 3s but good movement.
Yay Korver.
Felder in for James.
I like their center court logo.
James kills that possession pounding it for 20 seconds. I hate that.
Yeah, what an awful player
The play was poor. The player is not. See the difference?
This team rules
Korver in. James, Kev, Frye, Shump, KK.
Here goes sniper Kyle
Jazz scores as James whines. Then he gets a cherry picking and-1 try, and a tech.
LBJ has gotten fouled at least twice at the hoop. Don’t blame him and glad he yelled enough for the tech
Two on TT. TT with foul issues this game means a lot of Frye v Rudy/Favors on D. Ouch.
Wow, another nice pass from Kyrie to Lebron.
Getting killed in the paint so far
Yeah. He can playmake some. There is a high error rate, however. Go all the way & try to dunk on Rudy.
Please Lig, don’t do anything…
Lazy passing still there. Liggins on Hayward. Love on Rudy.
Love needed to dig down on that Favors hoop. Let Rudy shoot the jumper.
Wow, nice pass Kyrie.
I am going with a lower score like DW. Cavs 97-94. Korver makes 3 from deep.
I see a lot of Utah picks. Understandably so. Still, I think the Cavs pull this one out. 108-103.
YES WELCOME TO ” THE LAND ” THREEZUS —GET READY TO LAUNCH —-HAVE TO THINK IF WE WIN THIS ONE– LEBRON SITS TOMORROW
I don’t expect much from Korver tonight, but it’ll be interesting to see how he fits in immediately. I imagine Utah wins this in a close one.
Welcome to Cleveland Kyle!!!
