Live Thread: Cavs @ Hawks (#OnTheFly)
2017-03-03The Cavs wing their way to Atlanta tonight on the second stop in their three game flight down the Eastern seaboard. The trip began with a bit of turbulence on Wednesday night in Boston, as the wine & gold took a close loss to the crumb-snatching Celtics, who clipped the Cavs’ conference lead down to three games. However, the outcome was mere inches away from being a very different story, as Deron Williams’ last second, wide open three attempt just missed giving Cleveland the lead and potential victory.
To be fair, Williams had played almost the entire fourth quarter (24 minutes in total) of his very first game as a Cav, despite only expecting to play 10-12 minutes off the bench. It was his first game action in almost two weeks, and only his fourth game back since being sidelined with injury as a Maverick back on January 25th. But, that’s life these days as a new Cavalier… you don’t get much of a chance to acclimate and adjust. Coach Lue just throws you into the mix to see if you can catch up on the fly…
“They really don’t practice here, and they told me that coming in.” — Deron Williams
Another relatively new addition, Kyle Korver, will receive a homecoming of sorts to his old roost, as this will be his first visit back to the team he played for the past 4.5 seasons. The Hawks reportedly have plans to honor Korver before tonight’s game. After a scorching month of February for the sharpshooter, he had some trouble getting open looks against Boston. Hopefully, La Flama Blanca can recapture some of his hot shooting touch against his former team (make sure you check out Mitch’s terrific analysis of what Kyle brings to the team if you haven’t already).
Though the Cavs completed their deal to pick up Andrew Bogut, the Aussie big man won’t be in uniform until Monday night’s game back at the Q against the Heat. The Hawks also won’t have their newest addition, Jose Calderon, available until tomorrow night, but they will have Ersan Illyasova, who has been heating up in his first few games with the Hawks since joining them at the trade deadline.
This is only the second meeting of these two teams this year, and the Cavs owe Atlanta one for handing them the first loss of the season back on Election Night, November 8th in Cleveland. The Hawks are hovering at fifth in the EC (1.5 games behind Toronto), and are at the front end of a six game homestand. I’m sure they’re hoping to avoid the 4-5 spot and a potential third sweep at the hands of the King and all his men. Speaking of LeBron, he notched his seventh triple-double of the season on Wednesday, and was named the EC Player of the Month for February yesterday (his sixth straight year of winning the award for the month of February).
Probable starters:
Cavs
F LeBron James
F Channing Frye
C Tristan Thompson
G Iman Shumpert
G Kyrie Irving
(Coach Ty Lue is sick and missed shootaround, but is reportedly going to still be on the sidelines for tonight’s game)
Hawks
F Thabo Sefolosha
F Paul Millsap
C Dwight Howard
G Kent Bazemore
G Dennis Schroder
Prediction: The Cavs ruffle some feathers and fly past the Hawks, 115-107.
Catch all the action on ESPN starting at 7pm EST… and follow along here at C:tB.
Dwight just standing around not guarding anyone. Rage apathy.

Wow. AC: “Who has the ball.” 8 passes I think
Atlanta just gave up on D!
Fred and AC are panicking over that ball movement!
All The Passing!!
DWill2 might be the greatest buyout/waiver addition of all time…
Here’s how that went down:
Gilbert: “You hate the Warriors, right?”
Cuban: “Yup.”
Gilbert: “Cut D Will. LeBron needs a playmaker.”
Cuban: “You’re a brilliant negotiator. Done.”
If one of the D-Wills was willing to stay for the tax payer MLE ($5.2 mil) which one would you offer it to?
Tough call, but probably Deron… he’d be the most likely to take it and I think his passing will be a difference maker… but man I like Derrick’s athleticism on the wing… really tough
I would take Deron first too given his playoff experience. So smooth too
Korver wags a finger!
Korver with the rejection!
BLOCKZUS!
I know the Cavs aren’t great defensively right now… but what happened to the Hawks?
I was just saying today that I’d really love LBJ to have a huge points game to remind everyone about the real MVP.
Wow! DWill2 is such a great passer!
I think our keyboards were psychically connected
ATL really needs to figure out what their colors are. I can’t keep track.
Pistol Pete throwback night…
Not a fan of these unis
It’s just nice to see another guard being able to dribble and distribute. DWill looks smooth
And 5 assists in 7 mins already
Cavs are truly playing positionless basketball
DWill2 and Kyrie together could be Devastating…
* will be
True story
RJ hits Cavs 10th three already…
Someone should really attempt to guard Hardaway…
KK still a bit off…
There you go Mike S!
Delaney hurt his ankle trying to sell that flop…
LBJ hacked twice before they called it…
LBJ could go for 50 tonight.
So could Kyrie…
Death Lineup… with DWill2 taking Channing’s spot…
Prolly not a good idea to have DWill2 guard Illyasova…
Nice D there from Derrick…
Awesome quarter if not for Shump.
And Channing’s interior D…
Lotta scoring… not a lotta defense… Like the 39… don’t like the 33 given up…

Kyrie has the greatest handle I have ever seen. How does a person learn how to do that?
Carrying. Love the handles, but what he just did isn’t possible without your hand going partially under the ball. Same with those spins he does. I used to do the same in high school, obviously not as well. The And 1 guys used to do similar stuff. I copied a bunch of their moves when I was a kid.
How is it carrying if it doesn’t get called? Cant other guys do the same thing then? Sounds like bunk.
It’s carrying, they just don’t call it. On anyone.
OK so if he doesn’t have a competitive advantage then my assessment of it being the greatest handle I have personally seen still holds true. He’s the greatest carrier I have ever seen.
You do it quick enough it’s hard to see. Same thing with traveling for other superstars. Watch the highlights. Yes I have seen other guys do similar things. CP3, John Wall have both done similar spins. The in between the legs behind the back crossovers he does are difficult and risky, probably why more guards don’t try it. There is a reason why CP3 assist to turnover rate is usually around an eye popping 4-1 rate. He doesn’t try stuff like that all the time.
Yep. Everybody does it these days, but it’s classic carrying.
I don’t see a carry…

Bwahahha! Come on his hand goes completely under the ball at one point and goes back over.
I think you’re seeing things…
1 second in right before he goes between the leg. He is cupping the ball.
Derrick Williams has been forcing things a bit more lately. Not sure if he just needs to calm down, or if he’s coming back to Earth.
Dude, he was the only guy who did anything off the bench against Boston…
Not saying I’m not glad to have him, but he has been passing open relatively open threes to drive, and it hasn’t worked.
Hit 2-5 on Wednesday… he passed up one tonight… think you’re being too hard on the guy
Stuffed Enchilada that time…
Second pass Shump has missed…
When Derrick gets the ball on the arc with his defender playing off him, driving into the teeth of the defense is the worst possible option.
UNCLE DREW!!
Kyrie and Bron are both devastating so far…
Would be a rousing ovation for Korver if the Hawks ever had anyone show up for their games.
I have to give them credit though as they do seem to appreciate Kyrie’s ridiculousness
Shump knocks one down!
https://twitter.com/NBA/status/837822212111466496
Nice ovation for Threezus here…
I don’t know what Shump is doing on D right now…
What happened to the Hawks D?
Bron probably could have dunked that… but again not a bad idea to try and get Shump going…
The scary thing is LeBron gets better in the playoffs.
Bron looks amped!

Well, that’s one way to stop D12, Channing…

Cavs scorching. Hope they blow this team away early.
Second Half in Atlanta, if necessary.
Nice
Bron is wet from downtown!

I lose confidence in Shump nightly now…
Woof. Nice handles, nice arc.
WOW! Kyrie!
I like that Doris is getting a shot to call some games… She’s really good
Yes! Me too. Happy with tonight’s commentators.
Channing! Keep it going big man…
Back to back treys from Ky and LBJ…
They’re going right at Frye with Dwight…
Great inside pass from Bron…
Shump made both so good pass.
Kyrie trying to get Shump going. Probably should’ve just taken the layup.
Shump still off…
What are these Hawks uniforms? Retro? Should’ve left em in the past.
Yeah, Pistol Pete night…
I mean if you’re going to go ugly alternate uniform you might as well go all in.
Wow… Bazemore just drove by Channing like he wasn’t there…
Kyrie gets it started…

Hope Deron has a better game and Korver is comfortable in his old stomping grounds.
He looks locked in in warmups…
