Summer League Recap: Summer Cavs 82, Summer Bucks 53
2017-07-08Editor’s Note: Big thanks to commenter, CLF for sending us his recap on this one.
Having plenty of free time this summer, I’ve been binging on NBA Summer League with my ESPN app. Tonight was the debut of the Cavs’ Summer League squad… and they did not disappoint, putting a beat down on the Bucks, 82-53. Personally, this was a very unexpected outcome. A cursory glance at the Cavs’ squad leaves the casual basketball fan wanting. I expected this squad to struggle winning even one game. And if you look at the Bucks squad, a casual fan would have to conclude they had a ton more talent with guys like Thon Maker, Rashad Vaughn, power conference college prospects such as Bronson Koenig, Travis Trice, and Gary Payton II. So how did the Cavs dominate? Here are some random.
- The athleticism, defense, and hustle of this Cavs squad: there are a bunch of long, fast, strong, athletic guys. This Cavs’ summer squad gave more effort than any team I’ve seen in summer league so far. Credit to the players and coaches who were ready to play from the jump.
- The lack of good ball handlers and jump shooters for the Cavs: Kay Felder and TJ Williams looked like the only guys who could use the dribble to create. Most of the good plays happen with man and ball movement, along with run outs from good defense. The jump shooting of the second unit was clearly a lot better than the starting unit and will be something to watch going forward.
- The speed of Kay Felder: he can literally can get anywhere on the court he wants. Unfortunately, his shooting was absolutely abysmal. tons of open looks, nothing fell. Felder finished 2-11 from the floor and 6-7 from the line.
- Edy Taveres.: he’s ridiculously long. Unfortunately, he just can’t handle the speed of the game, often looking awkward and out of rhythm – unable to take advantage of his basketball acumen. He still made plays, but should’ve made more. Despite that, he scored a team high 12 and grabbed eight boards in 20 minutes to go along with three turnovers.
- Anthony Gill, Sam Cassell Jr., Andrew White III, and TJ Williams: Color analyst and former college coach Seth Greenberg was complimentary of Gill and White III. He called them “fit” guys who can find ways to be effective filling a role. White shot the ball really well, but his defense was lacking, as he committed lot of fouls. Gill cleaned up the boards really well and didn’t make egregiously dumb plays.
- Hat tip to CtBer JRL, who identified TJ Williams as a player to watch…. Williams did not disappoint… going 4-5 from the field and adding three assists and two steals. He was +21 in 15 minutes.
- The Cavs’ offense was in trouble in the third, but Williams, White, and Cassell Jr. bailed the team out when they took a 10 point lead and stretched it to over 20 with good offense and stifling defense. Cassell also scored eight and was +20 in 12 minutes.
One thing I’ll be watching for the next game is seeing whether the coaches give some of these second unit guys who impressed more time with the starting unit. It appears that they’ve earned the opportunity to see what they can do.
Summer League notes from Bosto and Orlando. Players who impressed: Luke Kennard, Markelle Fultz, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Donavan Mitchell, Dante Exum.
- Luke Kennard: ridiculous shooter… can finish off the dribble.
- Markelle Fultz: can get buckets… but turns the ball over a lot.
- Jayson Tatum: probably the best player of Summer League so far. Clutch: can post up and score, dribble drive and score, and shoot spot up jumpers and score.
- Jaylen Brown: inconsistent, but obviously has a lot of confidence coming from out of the playoffs.
- Donavan Mitchell: ridiculous athleticism and length, a two-way player who can defend, shoot, dribble, and pass…. remember this guy’s name for the future.
- Dante Exum: seems to have recovered from his ACL injury… definitely love his length and ability to get to the rim and make shots.
That’s what I have for now…. stay classy CtB!!!
SIR “D” WAANTS TO MAKE THE ROSTER —–THAT BLOCK WAS AN NBA BLOCK !!—–TAVARES NEEDS ALOT OF WORK ON OFFFENSE —STILL COULD HELP ON THE D WITH HIS SIZE
2nd unit defense is working tonight!
SIR “D” ‘S STROKE AND HANDLES LOOK MUCH IMPROVED THIS YEAR
Cavs summer squad offense working much better the past two games. And their defense continues to impress!
SIR DOMINIC POINTER!!! Made a corner three earlier… and just dunked on GSW!!!
Malcom Thomas with an offensive rebound and put back. Working as a small ball big right now.
KILLER SHRIMP “KILLIN ” IT SO FAR
Nice finish with the foul!!!!! And he smoked that guy off the dribble lol.
McCaw was the defender LMAO… he got owned!
Anthony Gill passes up a wide open three, drives to basket and gets and 1 on the finish.
Edy Taveres trying to play bully ball in the post…. bricked a hook shot.
Anthony Gill with the assist from the block.. just a smart player.
Fantastic defense to start against GSW. Felder and Paul doing some work in the early going. Felder has definitely settled down since the first game. He’s looking night and day different… more confident, under control, better court vision.
LIST OF SERVICEIABLE FREE AGENTS LEFT—ZELLR/ STUCKEY / TY LAWSON / TERRANCE JONES / JENNINGS / BEASLEY / MOUTE …..ANY ON THAT LIST AT THE LEAGUE MIN. WORTH PURSUING / WHO WOULD BE TOP CHOICE OF THAT LIST
I only want Moute. The rest of those guys I’m less than interested in.
Yeah. The rest of those guys suck.
I’d do a non-guaranteed minimum for Lawson and see if LBJ can work his mentor magic on him.

8:30 on NBA TV: GSW rooks at CC rooks. Go Cavs!
https://twitter.com/RealGM/status/884436512900694017
Sucks.
Eh. I’m not sure this is real. Anthony can control where he’ll end up.
From everything I’ve read, he’s perfectly cool going to the Rockets…if I were the Knicks, though, I’d be looking for more than just taking on a garbage contract for him…they should at least get pick(s), even if they’re not very prized picks.
Of course you’d give up Osman for Melo. Melo, even now, is probably better than Osman would ever be.
Thanks for giving me clarity on this, Mr. Costanza.
I don’t get the joke. And I’m a Seinfeld nut.
Other than a “potential sparkplug off the bench” role (at which he could excel), Melo 2017 is probably a net negative: lousy and lazy on D, and would disrupt any chemistry on O by hogging the ball and holding on to it. Plus totally entitled with a nuts ex-wife. This adds up to trouble. He would be OK at the vet min. If he causes problems, maybe we could trade him for Liggins.
LeBron would get him to play like Olympic Melo. He’d be straight fire coming off the bench.
Melo has never been a bad chemistry guy. Not his fault the Knicks sucked. Melo would absolutely thrive on this team chasing a ring. Sometimes I wonder if you guys actually follow the NBA or just read headlines?
BUT LEBRON WOULD
I know NOMAD, I know. It just makes me sad. It’s going to be a tough hump to get over GS and we are mortgaging every single future asset we have. I mean, I get it. I want more championships too. It just will make me sad if we waited all that time to see if Osman could do anything and we likely won’t get to.
I don’t want to give up Osman for Melo. Just don’t want to do it.
Mark Cuban is one of my favorite owners…and he is dead wrong about the Mavs in the east. He would be tanking like crazy in the east. As would every other team besides golden state. Even San Antonio doesn’t stand a chance against the Cavs. Sorry Mark, but Lebronnis better than your whole team by himself. And the Spurs are not the same without Duncan and without a healthy group of veterans. Leonard is transcendant but isn’t the same leader…good luck finding your way to the middle the next several years bud.
Cuban meddles more ham Gilbert does
Serious question. Would you put off Cedi for a year/trade his rights to get KCP on midlevel for year w/player option?
Yes, but I see the Nets offering a max deal to KCP.
Probably after the Wizards stop dragging their feet on cap space.
Absolutely, but KCP to the Cavs is a pipedream, at least as far as I can tell…
Definitely.
Dennis Smith Jr is an exciting player. Thought he was underrated in the draft. Possibly the most athletic player in the draft.
https://twitter.com/WindhorstESPN/status/884171816654311424
Dennis Smith with a stepback 3 Kyrie style.
In Josh Jackson’s face LOL.
Damn… Dennis Smith just blowing by Josh Jackson and finishing at the rim strong. Dude’s strong.
Him, Tatum, and Fox – I really like.
Me too… very excited to see how they do when the games actually count!
Dennis Smith with another great performance…. Josh Jackson not bad either.

Took a $1.3 Mil pay cut to be Boston’s thug.
Good thing he sucks.
Not at thugging.

Good on you, Griff. No reason to let them tie your hands like that. They can always hire Isiah Thomas.
Orlando gets Shelvin Mack for $12 million for two years. We all need to face the fact that the Cavs have little ability to sign anyone until all the exceptions and all the cap room is used up and only minimums are left.
That is right.
Also, I hear a strange silence from those usually carping about how much TT and JR get paid.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/884102281884442624
I’m surprised Toronto couldn’t just keep Joseph and sign Miles? Bad move for Toronto.
I’m mixed. On one hand it’s a terrible idea not to have a competent backup for Lowry. On the other, they’re not winning anything if Lowry is hurt, and CJ can shoot.
Well, it’s probably their belief in Powell’s continued development that’s driving the decision if I had to guess.
Amico apparently reported that the Cavs were offering Osman and ‘vets’ for Melo. It’s Amico, so almost certainly crap…’vets’ probably being Shump, Frye et al. Don’t see the Knicks doing that…yet…
When Griff is their GM, it will get real interesting. I’d hold out for a buyout. We need some youth.
If Griff is really as high on Osman as his public remarks indicated, he’ll probably make it a point to get him in any Melo dump…
Looks to be an incredibly deep draft class. Tatum and Fox seem to lead the pack.
I concur. Maybe no HOFers, but a ton of good, solid players.
Nets will probably max out KCP now and will begin to start an actual rebuild with 2 picks in 2018.
Nets are digging themselves out of the crapper. Good job by their FO.

WTF????????
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/883906848524578816
Why though??? Aren’t they trying to win next year? Then why re-sign Lowry and Ibaka?
I don’t think Carroll played very well for them.
You’re right about that…. he really hasn’t been the same since that scary knee injury against the Cavs a few years back when he was with ATL. But I thought maybe they’d stick with him since it’ll be year 2 with the team.
I think after the Raptors gave Lowry that contract, they decided Carroll wasn’t worth the tax burden.
I’m sure that’s the case. They wanted rid of his contract badly. I know he’s been a huge disappointment to their fans.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/883904197602795522
Maybe Griff is a secret agent for the Cavs and he’s gonna waive Melo?
Or watch LeBron go to the Knicks now ???
Damn… Felder looks like a different player…. dropping dimes behind the back and forcing TOs with great help defense.
WHITE !!! Drains the 3 at the buzzer! Fantastic team passing on that possession!
The defense of the 2nd unit is fantastic. Felder came out and balled out! Gill continues to impress.
Felder has great vision at times… helluva dime to Gill!
Kay Felder already looking better tonight. Better shooting by the 1st unit. Terrible defense though.
Semi Ojeleye looking like a perfect 3 an D player…. wish CavsDan would’ve purchased a 2nd rounder this year.
This Kuzma kid is pretty damn good…. he has length, can shoot the 3, and played some great physical defense against Tatum. Supposedly the Nets traded him with Lopez??? Damn the Nets got fleeced again.
The Rockets have that 7 footer Joe Chee.
Hot take for 2017: Jayson Tatum > Jaylon Brown. Brown has athletic upside, but he still has no jumper.
You are going to have to fight every Celtics fan. Most of them seem to think Brown is a shoo-in HOFer.
LOL… I am biased as a Duke fan… but Tatum’s offensive game is NBA ready. Brown just looks so bad trying to create his own shot or taking anything but wide open jumpers. They’ll probably go with Brown for defense, but put Tatum in for offense or as a small ball PF.
I question not trading Brown now for PG13 especially in light of the Heyward acquisition.
I think Tatum is a far better prospect than all the ‘gritty’ scrubs they’ve been stockpiling because they fit President Stevens’ ‘culture’.
LMAO…. nice!!! And I dare say there’s some truth to it insofar as Tatum’s an actual offensive weapon who can get his own shot unlike everyone else on that team not named Isaiah Thomas.
Josh Hart looking really good. Ball dropping some dimes out here too.
SO WHO DO WE GIVE THE CREDIT TO FOR NOT SIGNING CRAWFORD AND LEAVING ENOUGH MONEY FOR JEDI —–WHOMEVER —GOOD MOVE !!!
Have to admit, Ball’s passing is contagious.
This Vegas crowd is lit!!! Ball already looking better by not shooting LOL.
Can we offer a supermax extension similar to hardens to Lebron Shut all this Lebron 2018 free agency talk.
LeBron could quash all of it with a statement. He won’t. I still think he stays.
I think he likes having the leverage of the possibility of him leaving and putting pressure on CavsDan.
But LeBron is no idiot and he definitely knows the Cavs are the class of the East with Kyrie and Love locked up for a few more years. No other team gives him a better chance to get to the Finals every year.
I really doubt even he knows for sure what he’s doing next summer. Lots could happen before then.
Caleb Swanigan getting alotta love tonight.
Hey I got a shout out lol.
Thanks for the recap. I hope the coaching staff can identify a few guys who we can mold into something. This team needs some young lengs under it, even for 12-14 minutes a game.
Agreed. Some guys who hustle. Play hard & mostly smart. Who are not afraid. And who are good athletes. We can work with that.
You’re welcome. There’s definitely some young, spry legs with some energy on this summer squad… it’ll be interesting if anyone emerges.
https://twitter.com/joevardon/status/883823792279085056
Damn…. Swanigan can hit 3s???
Mike Breen just said Jamal Crawford to Minny….
Probably the best place for him to go.
I just don’t get the Crawford love…. selfish, one way player, who’s stats look OK because he’s the archetypal low-efficiency volume shooter. His shooting percentages look as bad as Shump’s for crying out loud.
I’m not high on him at all, but even as old as he is, he gets into zones where he just can’t miss. That can be valuable coming off the bench. He’s not what the Cavs need, though, for sure.
That’s fair… he can go unconscious… if I were a coach personally what happens in between those zones just isn’t worth it LOL.
Amen. And he had CP3, Griffin, & Reddick out there with him. Bullet dodged.
I think for a club like Minny that needs some vets and guys that can hit 3s, It makes sense.
Can’t argue that Minny needs vets who can shoot 3s… just not sure Crawford’s the way to go.
Oh thank goodness. Sweet heavens have mercy
Vardon just tweeted he is close to Minny signing. Cavs wanted to make sure we had $$ for Osman. Right priority there. Adding two 6’9″ guys is sensible (Green & Osman). We didn’t need a 37 year old who is a ball hog, average fron 3, & plays no D.
I think the play with Melo is a buyout. Unless they want Shump & Frye. Sell it to him like we need the depth to beat the Dubs. If NY buys you out, we’ll have it.
Yup… buyout or salary dumps for Melo or Wade.
RJ Hunter looks terrible… nice pick Danny Ainge! lol
Caleb Swanigan can rebound.
This Zach Collins kid is very interesting. Ridiculous shooting range for a big man. Also athletic, coordinated for a lanky guy. Just needs to learn how to finish strong at the basket.
WOW. Mitchell with the spin move and dump off to Bradley for the easy two!!!
Caleb Swanigan lost 40 pounds and looks like a beast!!! Also, Zach Collins, fantastic 1st impression passing and shooting the ball.
LOL…. Vegas going NUTS over this Chinese player for the Mavericks! Pretty cool.
Cameron Payne and Kris Dunn getting owned by Dennis Smith and Yogi Ferrell.
Payne just absolutely sucks. I’d play Carter-Williams over him. (too bad he’s not on the Bulls anymore)
Has athletic ability… just hasn’t taken the NBA seriously at all.
Supposedly Rockets trying to fast track trade for Melo. Guess the Cavs should get off their butts. Melo controls where he goes, so LeBron needs to get on the phone.
HaHaHa, just think of Melo and Hardin on the same team. What will Chris Paul do when he never gets to touch the ball?
Damn. Harden just got 200+ million…
After that Game 6 vs. San Antonio without Kawhi….. what are they thinking
LOL…. Honestly I agree with those who were saying Harden was toast. He had open his mouth about how it was weak to not play 82…. then proceeded to flame out because he had nothing left in the tank.
I guess he won’t be coming to the Cavs.
It is fun to speculate about how the WC will play out in coming years. Hopefully the GSW will implode from something; maybe bad sushi for a year. Then what? I really don’t think the Rockets or Thunder will be the next to win it. Too much depending on one guy who has to have the ball all the time. Can Harden or Westbrook evolve to be a team player? Or, win it anyway? My guess is the Spurs or T-Wolves will be the next up.
LOL guess not! To me, the West will be controlled by GSW until they lose either Curry or Durant. I agree with you… don’t see the Rockets or Thunder winning it. I think the Rockets have a better chance though now with CP3 at the helm. But he’s getting old honestly and the lack of playoff success is troubling IMO.
I’ll never count out the Spurs… and the TWolves are very intriguing… I’m wondering how long they can keep that trio together. If they stick together, I think they’ll make noise.
That is one highly paid turd.
Thanks for the recap, nice job. Still rumblings of a Melo to Rockets trade…but if the Knicks don’t want Anderson’s sweet, sweet contract, I’m wondering who the Rockets would ship.
Thanks MikeO…. looks like Wade will be the only big time Cavs’ option then if Melo’s going… and honestly I kind of prefer Melo to Wade.
I definitely prefer Melo to Wade, although I don’t think the Cavs should trade for him. I think Wade is mostly washed.
Yup agreed. I would definitely take Wade from March on though for the postseason run.
Nice summary and analysis !!
Thanks Mike P…. I appreciate it!

Thanks for the recap.
Thanks Cols… I appreciate it!
WILL BE SOMEWHAT BUMMED OUT IF WE DON’T SEE “JEDI ” WEARING THE WINE AND GOLD THIS YEAR—-NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT KIND OF POTENTIAL HE HAS
IS THERE ENOUGH POTENTIAL IN ” BIG EDDY ” TO KEEP—DON’T FIND MANY 7′ 3 ” SOMEWHAT ATHLETIC / AGILE BODIES WALKING AROUND —–DOES T.J. PUSH KILLER SHRIMP FOR POSSIBLE ROSTER SPOT OR BOTH HEADED TO CANTON FOR MORE WORK …..WHITE A DARKHORSE TO MAKE THE ROSTER ….THESE ARE THE INTRIGUES THAT SUMMER LEAGUE BRINGS ….GOOD RECAP AS I DIDN’T WATCH THE GAME
Tavares is so slow.
Big Eddy definitely smart enough to play…. made really good decisions and played really good defense. He just looks uncoordinated and slow sometimes because he’s so damn long.
TJ Williams looked ready to play. He’s got an NBA body and can score a little bit. I gotta think they’re gonna try and develop him in Canton.
Same with White…. he’s got an NBA body and he’s a sharpshooter. If he can defend without fouling, I think he’s a fantastic bargain bin pickup.
Thanks for recapping this CLF! Good observations
Thanks EG! My pleasure… glad to contribute!
Nice recap man. Summer League is awesome to attend if you’ve never been there. After I go full fledged degenerate and move to Vegas, if will be one of the highlights of my year. It’s a bummer than Cedi isn’t there.
Yeah. He’s got Turkish NT duty later & is still unsigned.
Thank you Cory! You definitely are onto something today’s late session with the Celtics and Lakers is sold out!!! I think it’s the first time it’s ever happened for the Vegas Summer League.
