Breaking: Kendrick Perkins Is Back In Town (for a couple of weeks)
2017-09-21The Cavs invited Kendrick Perkins to training camp according to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com. Perkins is an NBA vet who won a title with the Boston Celtics in 2008 and spent some time with the Cavs during the 2015 season.
He’s never been a game changing player on the floor putting up career averages of 5.8 rebounds and 5.4 points. However, he brings something to the locker room, which is a huge part of why he always seems to be around Championship teams. He spent three years with the Thunder and went to the Finals with them. He was even a starter for part of that time, despite never averaging more than five points while playing over twenty minutes a night.
When he joined the Cavs he rarely played, but he made an impact when he did. His most memorable moment came when he leveled Jae Crowder with a nasty screen after Kelly Olynyk practiced for his MMA career on Kevin Love during a first round playoff game.
On a side note, how will Jae Crowder feel now that two of the other 18 players (J.R. Smith backhanded him that same series) in training camp have aimed punches at him.

LeBron is in rare form!
LeBron says his plans to finish his career in CLE “hasn’t changed” but he hedges it with “you guys know I won’t deal with my free agency until the summer.” So, no end to rumors there.
Yeah it’s a difficult question to answer. If he were to leave, I’m sure he wouldn’t say so, thus the distraction. But it is encouraging to hear how he answered the question, although Vardon sort of put words in his mouth.

This guy gets around:
https://twitter.com/mcten/status/912352990744518659
I recognize his name but don’t really know where he was last.
Personally, I know we are thin on PGs but I’d still cut Calderon before RJ. Team chemistry wise I think RJ does a lot for the lockerroom.
I agree.
https://twitter.com/joevardon/status/912355115218145280
I’ve heard it thrown around that Wade could play a pseudo-point guard position. Is there any precedence for this? Haven’t done a bunch of research or anything, but I didn’t know if any of you guys knew
Someone brought this up previously. I can’t remember if it was Ben Werth or someone else. But he did play PG in previous seasons.
If you believe BBRef, once. Rookie year. SG all other years. But the O certainly ran through him often, regardless of designation. Best APG year was 7.5, twice, in 07 & 09.
According to Vardon’s article: Richard Jefferson is 37 and will make $2.5 million. He’d be a potential roster casualty in the event the Cavs and Wade come to terms.

IT IS GOOD FOR HIM AND WHATEVER TEAM HE CHOOSES TO HAVE TIME TO ACCLIMATE TO EACH OTHER —IT WOULD SEEM TO BE EASIER HERE WITH LEBRON TO GET ACCLIMATED —-LEBRON ASKING MEDIA FOR SOME GOOD DIALOGUE TODAY— AM SURE THE CONVERSATION (S) WILL BE MORE THAN JUST ABOUT BASKETBALL —-APPLAUD LEBRON FOR SPEAKING OUT
So it appears that Wade will make a decision by tonight.
https://twitter.com/AP_Sports/status/912296648038080512
AGREE WITH YOU JASON- ON YOUR THOUGHTS IF WADE COMES HERE- AND ALSO ARCH ABOUT TY RELYING TOO MUCH ON VETERANS— ESPECIALLY DURING THE REGULAR SEASON—–LET THEM PLAY —LET THEM GROW
FINALLY IT HAS ARRIVED– WE CAN BLOG ABOUT PLAYERS PERFORMANCES ON THE FLOOR VS “SUMMER DRAMA “——-DON’T THINK TAVARES / FELDER SURVIVE CAMP —-ANTE/ CEDI WILLL HELP WITH OUR BENCH—( YOUNGER —ATHLETIC —HUSTLE )—-THANK YOU TRIBE FOR MAKING THE LAST MONTH ( AND MORE ) SO BEARABLE AND KEEP IT GOING —” IN THE LAND “
I think one of Tavares/Felder will snag the 2nd 2 way contract if they clear waivers. If it is Kay, perhaps we waive Calderon to make room for Wade.
Hopefully Lue will play/develop Cedi/Zizik, he has a tendacy to rely on veterans, especially in the playoffs.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/912130963869716483
So, potentially:
OUT: Irving, D-Will1, D-Will2, JFJ, Dahntay, Felder/Tavares, +1 (RJ/Calderon/Shump).
IN: IT, Rose, Crowder, Green, Osman, Zizic, Calderon, + Wade.
https://twitter.com/KingJames/status/912279572854566912
https://twitter.com/AlexKennedyNBA/status/912133666263977984
Substitute Osman/Zizic for Tavares and that is a good shot at our 13. Who gets cut for Wade? I think we keep Osman & Zizic for if Bron bolts. RJ or Calderon seem most likely if we can’t work a Shump deal.
Osman and Zizic are not going to be cut for Wade. Like 100% safe.
EG what is this symbol?
I am shocked it happened this soon with Wade’s buyout. Still, good news for us if he comes as we’ll have more time to get things together.
In other news, Liggins traded from Clips to Hawks, who will likely waive him. Lets trade Calderon & Shump for nothing (if there are takers) & take Wade & Liggins back.
Would be good for the team to have that toughness Perkins brings to the CAVS, if they actually play him some!
Also, the CAVS still have Shump??????? Why???????
Because no one wants his contract.
And Shump has already stated that he will pick up the option on his final year.
OK since the CAVS are stuck with him, hopefully he improved by working on the jump shot the entire summer months!
We have 15 under guaranteed contract: IT, JR, Bron, Love, TT; Rose, Korver, Crowder, Green, Frye; Calderon, Shump, Osman, RJ, Zizic. Holland is 1 of 2 two-ways. Felder & Tavares are partial/non guaranteed deals & likely competing for a two way deal, though they would have to clear waivers first. Perk is a camp invite. 19 of 20 camp spots filled unless news broke of another.
https://twitter.com/AlexKennedyNBA/status/912155101187407873
Chris Forsberg: Celtics swingman Jaylen Brown not ready to fully commit but he’s open-minded to new teammate Kyrie Irving’s Flat Earth theory. “For what my eyes tell me, the world may appear to be flat. Kyrie may very well have a point.”
He has a point, all right – it’s right on top of his head. I’m guessing Brown was joking, who knows, but KI has in fact convinced at least a few people in the world. Congrats, Kyrie, on personally making the world a little stupider.
Cavs Media day Monday at 12:20. I think I saw something about tickets, but cannot refind it. Anyone going?
I think the Cavs cannot trade any new signees for a couple months. Given that there are a bunch, the teams hands are going to be rather tied when it comes to finalizing the roster.
Does anyone want to try to figure out who must be on it, so we can start guessing what it will look like?
Looks like 19, if they add Wade. They would need to get rid of Shump, or stretch pay him.
IT, Rose, Calderon
Wade, JR, Korver, Shump
LBJ, Crowder, Osman
Love, RJ, Green
TT, Frye, Zizik
Two-ways: Holland
Cut: Tavares, Felder
And 20 players if you include Perkins.
Rose, Calderon, Shump, Green- 4 wasted spots. Two of those spots should have been filled with Luc Mbah A Moute and PJ Tucker.
Do they have some point guards that we don’t know about?
Luc + LBJ + Crowder + Tristan + IT could maybe hold its own on defense
Stretch pay deadline for this year has passed.
We have 17 players on the roster 18 if you can John Hollands but his is two contract when do you have to cut to 15 players.
And 19 if you count Wade, right?
Right what is the rule for signing players that are bought out do we have to cut players to sign Wade or if its before season starts the 15 man doesnt apply plus two, two way contracts. Of course there is training camp contracts.
By the time the season starts, they can only have 15 players, with two 2-way contracts.
https://twitter.com/joevardon/status/912012004084371457
WOW…. personally I would’ve done it.
Not a fan of having Wade start.
Agree with Arch. What would the starting lineup be?
IT, Wade, LeBron, Love, TT
https://twitter.com/AlexKennedyNBA/status/912130443251773440
https://twitter.com/joevardon/status/912136913565442048
The Cavs are gonna have like 50 players at training camp.
Cavs apparently favored to land Wade:
http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/20809443/dwyane-wade-chicago-bulls-agree-contract-buyout
SO WADE GOT HIS BUY OUT—-SHOULD BE INTERESTING– HIS NEXT MOVE — A CHANCE FOR A RING IS BETTER HERE THAN OKC…COULD HE BE HEADED TO CAVS TRAINING CAMP ALREADY ?
Interesting. I just don’t understand what his role with us would be. He doesn’t space the floor and he is note explosive anymore. Would he be like a 6th man?
Would love to have Wade here
Melo to OKC is sooooo good for us. It removes any risk that we trade for Melo (which is great), and it makes it less likely Russ and PG leave OKC next year (which minimizes risk of a team luring LBJ with Russ and/or PG).
How is Trey Burke? I really don’t know anything about him.
Meh.
Did we invite Burke to camp?
On the one hand, Wade to OKC is just rampant media speculation at best – no actual facts behind it be sure of that. On the other hand, I would be DELIGHTED if OKC deposed GSW and Durant got to watch OKC win it all without him. God that would be great. Unfortunately it would mean OKC would need to be the Cavs so I couldn’t root for it, but boy howdy my second favorite universe right now is someone on Cavs gets injured, so Boston goes to the Finals and is all excited, and then they get curb-stomped by… Read more »
Two of the Dubs 4 all stars have already had serious injuries that could ruin a career. Every season Steph and Durant play is yet another risk. Nothing is certain. I don’t even think the perfect storm of all healthy Warriors that we faced last season was all THAT far away from us. All is different if we win game 3 last year. All there is to it.
MEDIA SPECULATION NOW SAYING IF WADE GETS HIS BUYOUT —HE MADE LEAN TOWARDS OKC INSTEAD OF THE CAVS ——THOUGHTS—-CONCERNS —–
To Wade Bron > Melo. Especially because east will be a walk to the finals.
I’m higher on Melo, than I am Wade at this point. But sure why not?!?!
Wade can play without the ball as evidenced in Miami. He is a fantastic utter, although obviously you don’t need to guard him at the three. He still, despite the slippage, is a better defender than Melo too. I don’t see how Melo coexists with Westbrook.
Cutter
Well, he’s likely a starter in OKC but should come off the bench here. Better shot at a title. Call me skeptical that OKC functions well with two ball hogs. I still put them well behind GSW & the Spurs. Rockets & OKC have to show me they have it figured out first.
Not high on Wade, anyway….he looked done to me last year. He might try harder for Lebron, but he was beyond terrible defensively aside from an occasional block.
JRL– WAS THINKING THE SAME (PERKINS ) —LIKE HIM AS A PLAYER ( IN HIS PRIME ) HE IS NOW PAST THAT —-THOUGHT 1 OF OUR OFF SEASON GOALS WAS TO GET YOUNGER ….JMO
Last season with the Pelicans he avg 3.5rbs and 2.5pts ppg on 14min played. I mean, why would you waste 14min on that? I’m absolutely sure the Ante/Frye will be able to do better.
Besides, Perkins defense is extremely overrated and we don’t need an “enforcer” now that we have Crowder. Not that he is the same type of player as Perk, but after getting diss’d by Boston, I’m sure him (along with IT) have a big chip on their shoulders and will play with something to prove.
Actually, all teams have a bunch of extra guys in for training camp. It is very rare for one to make the team.
How did this moron get elected……..
Since you didn’t specify who…I think you are safe technically on this forum as far as the ctb coming down on this post for politics, but I ask myself that same question everyday.
https://twitter.com/KingJames/status/911610455877021697
The other reason I wished the Cavs had won. They could have been the resistance.
https://twitter.com/CP3/status/911623341076832256
62000000 morons voted for him and 100000000 morons didn’t vote at all.
There really isn’t a reason for Perkins to even be considered. You have TT, Ante, Love, Frye,l and Tavares. Why consider a player waaaayy past his prime that will not be a threat on the offensive side?
Completely agree. He’s a waste of a roster spot.
Thunder on paper have a chance – will require sacrifice from all three of them (but especially Melo) and some time to figure it out. Adams and Roberson are perfect complements in their starting lineup. Patterson is a solid role player. I expect some deals to shore up the bench as the season moves along.
Even if the Warriors still end up beating them, the path back to the Finals just got that much harder for them versus the Cavs’ path. Maybe Adams can lure Donkey into one or two kicks to the groin..
Starters look good, and Roberson is much more playable with that much offense. They *really* need another stopper off the bench…like Shump…
Lol
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yavk8r2d
Amen.
Very unlikely warriors play them unless they get last seed
2nd round? 1 vs 4 seed would certainly be possible.
I probably would have done this:
https://twitter.com/BillSimmons/status/911610329074827264
No way would I have traded TT for Melo. Wade is crazy if he goes OKC. Though he would start there. Backup for us.
OKC has three very talented players, but I think that Westbrook, George and Anthony are going to get in each others’ way. They are not united in a common goal. I’ll call it: not gonna work very well.
I think they will figure it out by mid-January, and will cause problems for the Dubs if they meet in the WCF. I think they’re better than the Rockets.
Agreed. Good take Arch.
Hold up a minute. Melo has never learned to play with ANYONE yet. Why would he all the sudden learn to share the ball? Probably the whole team will turn unto PreCavs JR Smith types; clowning around because they will never see the ball. JR was stuck with Melo his entire career until the Cavs bailed him out.
Melo can be valuable as the leader of the second unit, especially if none of them can shoot.
He’s never played in a situation like OKC, unless you look at team USA. Like I said, he’s a good 3rd option.
They might figure it out, and they do have some good role players, but it’s gonna take time. I could see Melo playing second fiddle to Lebron, but Russell? And Paul George, he just told the Pacers he wouldn’t re-sign and then ends up in OKC. Who is the leader of that team? Westbrook?
I didn’t see anyway the Knicks taking back Shump in a deal, so then you’d have to include TT, and other pieces for Melo.
CLF AGREE IT APPEARS GOOD ON PAPER …….. WE SHALL SEE ……..AND AGREE WITH JASON CAVS / ALTMAN LANDED THE BEST TRADE FOR SO CALLED MARQUEE PLAYER (S)
If IT is healthy.
Yup…. I agree with Arch… they now have moved past the Rockets IMO. Kinda mad that the Cavs didn’t make a run at him given how little the Knicks got in return.
WOW… OKC got Melo for nothing…. Presti turned a bunch of crap into PG13 and Melo.
They should push the Dubs this year. The Knicks also took Kanter, what a great deal for OKC.
You might have missed the memo, but Melo sucks. The alternative was to pay him off and to actually get nothing.
He’s a good 3rd option!
SO GLAD WE WEREN’T STUPID / PANIC MODE AND TRADED ( WAY MORE ) FOR CARMELO —WE WILL SEE HOW THAT PLAYS OUT IN OKC—NOT SURE THE KNICKS WILL SUCK THAT BAD —STILL HAVE THE ” UNICORN ” AND MAYBE GETTING RID OF THE ” MELO DISTRACTION ‘ MIGHT ACTUALLY HELP THEM
If it blows up, maybe they buy him out next year.
Agree. No one wanted Melo & his contract. The Knicks would have to take back a poor contract (Kanter), didn’t get a 1st, and the young player is McDermott.
Compare the Kyrie deal to what Melo, Butler (2 years) and Paul & George (1 year) got. We got the best deal by far.
Melo to Thunder…they coul either be legit good this year, or they could implode. Giving up Kanter is no big deal.
Might hurt the Nets pick, though…I think the Knicks are going to suck hard now. Real hard.
Nah. Knicks will be better without him. Kanter can score inside. Ball will move. Plus Russ with a shot vs GSW.
I’m no huge Melo fan, but I disagree. I think they will be horrible. We’ll see, I suppose.
Agree, Knicks will be trash this year. But now Portzingas can be the #1 option.
I don’t want Melo. I’d take him if we could trade him for Shump straight up but the contracts are too far off. We’d have to give up too much. At this point, I’d rather go into the season with who we have. Channing and RJ are too good for our chemistry.
The Indians have barely trailed at all in the past month, but this is remarkable
https://twitter.com/ZackMeisel/status/911427115051974656
And…that jinxed them. Oh well. At least Allen didn’t throw a lot of pitches.
Those games in Seattle always seem to be low scoring. Anyways, I don’t think they need to overtake the Dodgers, because I don’t believe the Dodgers make it to the WS.
Cavs are back on Melo’s list: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2734665-carmelo-anthony-trade-rumors-knicks-star-would-accept-move-to-cavaliers?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=programming-national
Sorry for posting this too Phil.
No problem
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/911398214586204160
Buyout, yes. Trade, no. Not with that contract. Unless the Knicks send a couple nice draft picks our way.
I’d trade for him… Shump and the Cavs’ pick…. done deal.
You might want to look into the contract situation. He is signed for two years at way more than he is worth. Can you spell Albatross?
Yep, you’d need to include a contract like TT’s: http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=zjzenbw
Or “the Kay Felder package” —>>> http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ybsrr9mj
Another great trade! Throw in that Cavs’ 1st rounder and this is a done deal.
You can take cedi or RJ out of that deal and it still works…
Nice… even better!
Nicely done Arch… perfect!!!
I’d rather have Carmelo for two years than Shump and TT for 2 and 3 years respectively. The banana boat’s happening, and getting Carmelo makes it far more likely to happen in CLE than NYC.
WOW VERY STRONG / IMPRESSIVE SHOWING BY LEBRON ON THE BLOOMBERG REPORT —–SO IMPRESSED HOW HE HAS MATURED INTO A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL AND LEADER —-THANK YOU LEBRON !!
Good news: The Harden Rules, Bad News: IT does the same stuff

Confirming the play on Kawhi was dirty. As if there was any doubt. I hate GSW.
Yes also includes the Zaza rules!
Kind of a bummer they’re not addressing the pump fake and flail.
GUMMY BEAR GETTING ANOTHER SHOT- THIS TIME WITH THE SUNS—GOOD LUCK GUMMY
What’s does Austin Carr call Perkins? Is it Angry Smurf?!?!
I think he looks more like an angry genie
Angry Smurf was used a lot on CtB. I don’t recall who started it, but it sure is good.
Evilgenius
Good work, Evil!
What are the standard CtB nicknames?
Angry Smurf: Kendrick Perkins
Gumdrop Bear: Anthony Bennett
Pipe: JR Smith
??
Sockless curmudgeon – pat Riley
Donkey – draymond green
Austin Carr called Perkins by something before he was a Cav… it wasn’t angry smurf. I can’t remember and can’t find it online.

He’s back!
If Perk doesn’t make the team, or land a deal elsewhere, I would love to make him a coach. One of the best post defenders I have ever seen. If he doesn’t get hurt, no way Kobe gets that last title.
Yeah, if Damon Jones can be a coach, Perkins can be the special assistant for toughness and attitude.
Damon “three on a plate” coaches stylish attire.
WWWWWindians!
Keep the streak alive!
This deserved a ‘breaking’ seperate article?
Maybe we sign Perk so he can knock KD, Curry, and fake tough Green on their butts.
You can be sure Green will not be kicking anyone with KP in the house.
LOOKS LIKE KEV IS GOING WITH HIS TIMBERWOLVES SHORT CUT (HAIR )—-MIGHT BE A SIGN HE IS READY TO RETURN TO THOSE STATS
WOW SAW THE TEAM PICTURE —TAVARES IS HUGE !!!—WISH HE HAD MORE ATHLETICISM TO GO WITH THAT SIZE
Where did you see the team picture?
Its on the thread for the last post. Its all over Instagram. IT, JR, TT, Bron, RJ, Channing, Crowder, etc. all posted it. so its out there.
Team pic:
LOVE IT! Every team better come correct… or else…. KP!!!
