Live Thread: Cavs @ Rockets (#HoustonWeMightStillHaveAProblem)
2017-11-09Tom Hanks is a great actor. He’s been in a lot of movies… many of which he’s been able to save with his performances. Likewise, LeBron James is a great basketball player. He’s been on a lot of teams… many of which he’s been able to save with his performances. Yet, there are always the rare cases when no matter the efforts of one man, great though he may be at his craft, can elevate the supporting cast enough to produce an entertaining or satisfying outcome.
This is to say that, despite the two wins in the past three games by the Cavs to bring some sense of stability to this rocky early ride, the challenges standing in the way of a safe landing at the top of the Eastern Conference still loom large. It took 87 points from LeBron in those two contests (with also possibly Kevin Love’s best game as a Cav in the second one) to navigate the team to victory. And, it’s not like they gave up any less points to the opposition (122 and 119 respectively), while also dropping a clunker that appeared much closer than it was to the lowly Hawks in between.
The obvious issue is defensive. The Cavs have burned points to their opponents like rocket fuel, and when they’re not hitting on all offensive cylinders themselves… it can get ugly in a hurry. Speaking of Rocket fuel, Cleveland arrives in Houston to face possibly their biggest challenge to date in James Harden and his skyrocketing mates. The Rockets are 8-3 to start the young season, doing it mainly without the services of newly acquired banana boat buddy, Chris Paul. Oddly, both teams average the same 109.9 points per game, yet Houston is also giving up 10 points less per game defensively. They still shoot the lights out from the perimeter (a sore spot for the Cavs so far), and are coming off a 137 point performance against one of the stingiest defenses in the League against Utah. And, oh by the way, Harden almost matched LeBron’s season high with 56 of his own in that one.
So, the question will be whether or not the Cavs can do enough to slow down the Rockets from deep, while doing their best to fire off their own shots. Derrick Rose will sit this one out with a sore ankle, and Iman Shumpert takes his place in the starting unit. Not sure if that’s good or bad news. The best news, though, is that this is another nationally televised game… and the Cavs usually fare pretty well in those.
Catch all the action starting at 8pm EST on TNT, and don’t forget to chime in here… Let us know if you think the Cavs will prevail or if we’ve got a problem in Houston.
When you let Ryan Anderson beat you out on rebounds you know you’ve got problems.
That is pretty weak letting Anderson get that easy board…

Crowder again not contributing on offense. Cmon Jae
Tyronne Lue
Wow… wonders never cease… illegal screen call on Nene…
Kyle shoulda just shot that…
Frye gave Harden a football field worth of space there.

Rockets playing physical and very well defensively and are very decisive after receiving passes. Easier for slower guys to bend the defense if they go immediately instead of studying the d before reacting.

Cavs making sloppy mistakes….
Turnovers turnovers turnovers
I guess the Rockets just don’t foul people under the hoop… /s
Nene is such a dirty player.
One thing I have always desired to see is teams being decisive after receiving the ball. Attacking immediately, shooting or passing. The Cavs hold and hold and hold. Webnever do much with purpose.
Vintage Wade is a decent answer for Harden’s foul magnetism…
Provided he actually converts them… smh
Dude is a robot

DWade needs to run that body throw move all night to make up for Hardens flopping.
Well… kevlar ankles is playing through…
Houston in the vein of any d’antoni team attack immediately. Not quite seven seconds or less but D’antoni realized quick shots in transition are often better than half court. Really stresses a defense to the breaking point, especially if your team can’t keep up.

Well that sucks… LBJ down means we don’t stand a chance.
Trouble. James ankle.
This is what I was worried about…
Be interesting to see how many points Houston gets in 1st qtr…
Well. If LBJ twisted we might be in trouble for a few games
9 free throw pts for Houston and none for Cavs
That’s always the case. James Harden has dirt on all the NBA referees.
Black Hawk Down… we have a Black Hawk Down…

Over the limit. More FTs for Houston. 11-0 run for Hou.
How’s that not a foul. WTF???
They are trying. Can’t keep up.
LeBron didn’t really do much to get away from Nene there.
Cavs can’t buy a foul call in their favor…
Lue get someone in there to help….
Tristan’s been out “some time now?” Hasn’t it just been like three games?
Shump should get screamed at for that 19 foot jumper with 18 seconds in the shot clock
You can’t breath on Harden but you can hack the hell out of Love/James.
Rockets are either all threes all the time or Harden drawing “fouls”
Love was fouled there
Harden gets a call if you breathe on him…
He’s definitely a turd!
Man I hate Hardens game.
The Golden Turd…
Mood…

This was funny…

Defense is poor. Too many open 3’s. Seems like Love and Shump forgot how to defend the PnR.
Missed dunk & 3 for Shump! Still giving up too many lay-ups & O-boards. Shooting is off the charts.
So far Shump looking ok in the starting role. And no solo/blinders-on drives to the hoop like Rose
Lol… every Rocket except for Ariza has an offensive board already…
They shoot a lot of quick threes which helps along with us being out of position.
So many breakdowns already. 3 in transition leading to two open three bricks and a layup. Lost guys and LBJ and a few others not getting back. No excuse in half court for the Anderson open three attempt
I like the rim as our rim protector!
As long as that lid stays on I’m happy.
Stinking up the defensive glass.
Shump!
Man… nobody hunts for threes quite like the Rockets…
SHUMP!
Terrible call on shump from harden pushoff
How come the foul isn’t on Harden for shoving an elbow in Shump’s chest?
When you’re a star, they let you do it…
Love in the air from deep!
Clean start from both teams, could be a great game! Go Cavs!!
WOW!

Show me sometime shump. Houston has great spacing
LOVE!
Cavs looked energetic on that first defensive possession. Still had two guys closing out which led to missed open three and oboard
I see. Shump out there. God, if he initiates offense I am going to stop watching.
Keeping pace so far…
Has Lue said who is starting for Rose?
This could get ugly.
Continuing EG’s Tom Hanks movies theme and paraphrasing Forest Gump “….the Cavs are like a box of chocolates. You never know which one you gonna get,” Although lately when we bite into one of the Cavs’ pieces of candy, it’s been that crummy raspberry one instead of a caramel.
hope to see “good shump” once again—along with “cameo ” appearances fro deep frye / cedi / “zz”
I hope so too. We need Zz to get some minutes under him. It’s amazing he hasn’t
Well I think it helps that Rose is out tonight.
It does in a big way…he would get torched…
Not necessarily without knowing which Rose we were going to get.
