Live Thread: Cavs vs. Blazers (#Resolute)
2018-01-02I swear I didn’t plan it this way (after all, I did lose my bet with Nate that this would transpire weeks ago), but it just so happens that my first Cavs game of the season in person will also be Isaiah Thomas’ first game ever in a Cavs uniform.
That’s right, the diminutive scoring machine who’s been sidelined with a hip injury since last May is finally returning to competitive basketball after months of determination and resolve. Granted, he’s reportedly coming off the bench… on a minutes restriction (guesstimates I’ve seen are in the 12-18 range)… and will likely look extremely rusty after such a long hiatus. To their credit, the Cavs are saying (and doing) all the right things with IT’s comeback. They’ve probably erred on the side of being overprotective rather than rush him back into action, even though they could have certainly used some scoring punch during this current down turn in the schedule. They’re also keeping him out of back to back situations for a while, which means he won’t be a factor in Wednesday’s game in his old stomping grounds at the TD Garden in Boston. Yet, he should be available (barring any sort of setback) for the rematch on February 11.
It will be interesting to see just how Coach Ty Lue incorporates his new weapon into the rotation tonight, knowing full well that coming off the bench will be a temporary situation. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from the dude who finished fifth in last season’s MVP race as the NBA’s third leading scorer. It’ll probably take some time for him to regain his full arsenal of offensive moves, and no doubt his shot will be a bit off. Still, the former 60th pick in the 2011 draft has made a career out of proving people wrong, so maybe he’ll quickly regain his penchant for instant offense to give the Cavs a boost just when they need it.
As mentioned, this will be my first in person game this season (I won’t be on the Live Thread much, but will try to bring some first-hand impressions to the recap), but actually the first game I’ve even watched in almost two weeks due to the holidays… so, I’ve missed most of the three game losing streak to end the year. The month of January hasn’t been particularly kind to the Cavs in years past, and 2018 is no exception with a tough five game road trip (four against above .500 teams) before the annual MLK showdown with the Warriors back home. It won’t be an easy task to work Isaiah into the rotation and get him up to speed during this challenging stretch… but, if he’s up for it, his added shot-making ability should help resolve the Cavs to a happier new year.
First, they’ve got to get past the Portland Trailblazers, who despite playing on the second night of a back to back after coming off of an overtime victory against the Bulls last night, should also be getting their starting PG, Damian Lillard, back after a five game absence. Lillard always seems to relish playing the Cavs, and Cleveland’s own CJ McCollum has been lighting it up lately (32 points in last night’s win). Let’s hope the Cavs have recovered from their Napa wine tour and get back to their winning ways.
Prediction: IT provides just the right kind of spark in a high scoring affair, as the Cavs put a resolute end to their losing streak… 124-119 over the Blazers.
Catch all the action on NBATV starting at 7pm EST (or grab a ticket and come find me at the Q… I’ll be wearing my newly minted IT3 jersey). GO CAVS!
***Late update… Kevin Love is now questionable for tonight’s game…***
Kevin Love was not at shootaround Tuesday. He stayed home with an illness. He is considered questionable for the game tonight vs POR

Not sure why doesn’t count?!?
Nice sequence for JR. Hook. Great D on Lillard forces a TO. Then 2 FTs.
Trick shot by Crowder
Holy circus shot Batman!
One of Jae’s few highlights and it won’t even count.
Dude having possibly his best game as a Cav…
JR bailed LeBron out there.
Great D by JR
LeBron not blocking out again.
LeBlock!
“You tried!” Remember that one on Turner?

I would pay double for a league pass with no commentors, just mic the court up.
Commentators
Tough shooting night from three thus far for Cavs…
The NBA needs to start paying the refs more $, that way they’ll get better officials
EG, stoked you are at the Q – hope it’s a great win for you.
I’m just happy to watch IT play. He def helps with ball movement and spacing
And the pace. He actually runs the ball up the court.
Oh man, so the rest of the team have to run too?
Just joining the game, how has IT played so far? At first glance, looks like officiating is questionable?
IT has been energized and look no further than the Nurkic flop that was somehow upheld after review as to how officiating is going…
Well they can’t overturn a call on the floor. They were checking for a flagrant. They should’ve teched him for flopping.
Yeah they misrepresented it on the PA here… said the offensive foul was upheld rather than not calling it a flagrant…
Don’t know how it looks on TV but Crowder looks like a whole different player with IT on the court live…
Agree. Crowder looks much less tentative. It looks like psychological comfort. Like, IT is a trusted leader who he doesn’t need to impress, so he can just do his thing. Less thinking, and more fluid.
That’s how it looks on screen. AC & Fred both making that point.
Nice little flurry at the end of quarter, despite the refs.
Welcome back Isaiah Thomas!!
Blazers have good shooters, but Cavs let them get a lot of open looks…think if defense clamps down Cavs can run away from this game….didnt see Blazers bench do much of anything…probably only see IT for another 5 minutes and thats it
They said 20-22 mins before game… he’s at 11 currently
That nurkic flop will be on Shaqtin. He’ll get get fined for it.
nurkic got hurt running into Crowder haha
Flush him down the turlet next time down
Make up call
WWE level officiating.
They should call a tech on nurkic for flopping.
Nurkic with a flop
Well that was a spectacular flop by Nurkic
He flopped and then legitimately got hit in the face (on accident) by Crowder as he flopped down.
So, justice?
Holy cow!! The reply of that Evan Turner “strip” of LeBron was hilarious.
always called a foul regardless of who it is
weak offensive foul call hahaha…nurkic is a puss
Give me a break!!!
Down 10.
Another missed call as Turner rakes Browns arms
Bron
Defensively the Cavs don’t intimidate no one. Opposing teams know they can score at will against the Cavs.
I wish Lue would yell at the refs more. Whatever he is doing is not working.
Should be a t on Turner for jumping on the pile like that. That’s some crap.
At least they actually called that a foul. Half the time a guy will just grab a guy who is lying on the ground with the ball and he’ll gain a jump ball. I hate that too.
Man what is it with the refs this season? They are at an all time low.
Another silly jump in the air TO for the King.
I see the Zebras are starting the year off right /s
It’s really so much more obvious how much LeBron gets hacked with no calls when watching the game first hand…
Obvious to everyone save the refs.
That one was egregious.
JR for Wade, Love for TT as I typed.
I hate 1 shooter lineups: Wade, Korver, James, Green, TT.
TT jumper? 7 pt lead gone.
this offense is going to put up some monster numbers.
This defense is gonna allow some monster numbers too! hahaha
IT for 3! He sure can score.
That is a Wade 3 I could do without. Pull up early in the clock.
Since we don’t really play defense already, IT limitations on D don’t really change anything.
Sad but true. Same could be said on O: hood already. But I think it will go to another level. Hope Lue puts 2 of James, Love, IT, Wade on the court at all times.
2nd Q: IT, Wade, Korver, Green, TT.
That’s three former all-stars plus two top-5 draft picks. Not bad for a second unit!
IT Tray!
BELIEVE WADE/ T.T. COULD GET VERY GOOD AT THATPNR
Vintage Wade!
Three ball not there yet. Drives looking good.
IT looks healthy.
Nice finish by IT
That’s the IT we know and love!
Hoping IT can implement some tricks to get Crowder on track.
IT may actually get some calls.
He was top 5 in FT shots last season.
Turner eating Cavs up right now…
Isaiah energi, es crowder
Energizes
Huge ovation for IT
We give up soo many easy shots/layups.
LeBron is sooo lazy on D
I am glad someone else sees it. Turner killing him on that cut.
GET LOUD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good to see Love is a go. Keep the home streak alive. Lue SHOULD go deep into the bench with a game tomorrow.
ok that is better—get this crowd into it
do you have good seats
Not as good as I’d like…
Kev playing…
Hopefully he and IT can bring back that AAU chemistry.
IT leading the team out of the tunnel… rocking the wine headband yo…
are you taller than him evil ?—-wish I (we ) could all be there with you —hope (mentioned this earlier ) that the crowd EXPLODES / ELECTRIFIED when IT enters the game—–that is “on you ” evil to get the fans CHARGED UP —-will be watching / waiting —-make sure you wave to all of us evil—–ENJOY !!!!—–GO CAVS !!
I don’t think there will be any shortage of noise when IT takes the floor… but I’ll definitely add my voice to the roar
IT looking good in warmups…
