Live Thread: Cavs @ Spurs
2018-01-23The Cavs are in San Antonio to take on the Spurs. This game is pretty big for Cleveland considering they just had a team meeting filled with lots of drama and finger pointing at…….Kevin Love. Yea, the one that came to the Cavs, gave up shots, has played out of position, become a serviceable defender, averaged near a double-double, had his role jerked around whenever another teammate needed something to change, and actually seemed to give some effort most of the time during this horrendous season.
Tyronn Lue actually defended him. Lue’s comment was in response to the team attacking Love for playing just 3:08 during a loss to the Thunder, where the Cavs gave up 148 points without playing overtime:
“I mean, that’s crazy,” Lue said. “If Kevin was out there we might have given up 170. Who knows, man. We’ve got to be better, got to just stay together. We’re being tested right now. This is when your true character comes out and the character of who you are as a person and as a player. We’ve got to step up and play basketball (Joe Vardon, Cleveland.com).”
My take: Kevin was actually sick. Crazy, I know. What I wished happened though: Love told the team that he was important and they didn’t believe him, so he decided to fake sick, leave the stadium early, and watch the Cavs embarrass themselves. Or, Love had a rap feature he needed to do for an Iman Shumpert track and didn’t want it to be late. He was inspired and just had to rap, so he left the court. Those are absurd takes, but for this team they’re actually believable. This team has almost reached what some people call the Tyson Zone. That’s a zone where no matter how absurd the story is about a person or organization, it is pretty believable.
Now, let’s look at the Spurs. Gregg Popovich had a talk with Tony Parker recently about going to the bench. Tony Parker pretty much replied, “awesome, I’ll help the team and talk about wine with Manu, while I keep the bench warm for my protege, Dejounte Murray.” True story.
In fact, the Spurs have built such a strong culture that even when Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Kawhi Leonard is frustrated with the Spurs, most people think it’s a bogus story.
Some outlets have said this game actually means something for the Spurs since they’re 4-6 in their last ten, have changed starting guards, and had to shutdown their best player to rehab a hamstring that’s been bugging him since before the season. It doesn’t. Let’s look at some keys to the game and see why:
- The Spurs still have the second best defense in the league. The Cavs have the 29th ranked defense by .4 points per 100 possessions. They are 3-7 in their last ten. Cleveland needs to defend if they want a win. In the last ten games, the Spurs have given up 100 points just twice, the Cavs have given up 100 points nine times.
- The Spurs have had random players step up and fill voids. Players are playing above themselves and contributing. Guys with no names. The Cavs, on the other hand, do not. The Spurs aren’t supposed to be in third place considering their best player has only played nine games. No player of meaning has missed significant time for Cleveland. Everyone on the Spurs can beat you, and Cleveland needs to play that way.
- The Spurs work teams in the paint. LaMarcus Aldridge often gets the ball, attracts a double, then whips a pass before screening to help another teammate pop open. And, he gets his. He’s averaging 22.3 points to go with 8.9 boards a night. Kevin Love has a task tonight covering him, which he most likely will considering Pau Gasol is out for the Spurs tonight.
- And, that leads to Cleveland’s defensive schemes. They need to play the Spurs straight up. They are too smart to switch and trap against without being precise. If any Cleveland player ends up in no-man’s land on switches the Spurs will seek the open man out and make the team pay.
I’m not sure the Cavs will pull a win out tonight or even if their meeting to air grievances will mean anything. The team has been complaining all season. This game may just be one more step in their downward spiral. I hope not, but I’m picking the Spurs 124-102.
Let’s see if Rose plays as well as he did last two games.
So far….not
Awesome to see LeBron for 11 of his 15 years. May never see another player lead both teams in the Finals in points, assists, boards, steals and blocks. Then average a triple double the next year in the Finals
Bron 8th to 30k. Yes, 8th. Dr J. counts.
Classy by San Antonio crowd to give Bron his props.
At least LBJ hitting some mid-range J’s despite his 3 and ft going awol.
30K! Congrats LeBron!
There it is…
Very little interest in blocking out….
Nope… one point to go…
Surprised he took the jumpers. Was expecting something more dramatic.
Missed em both… must want to get 30k on a three?
That was a quick rest for LMA…
Crowder on fire!

Lol
Shump getting shredded by Parker – also going under on the PNR and then not making any attempt to contest the jump shot
Gonna need vintage Wade to combat vintage Parker tonight…
Two absolute phantom calls on love
The refs blame him too…
James taking inspiration from IT with the pass to his defender.
Tony Parker doesn’t miss off the bench apparently…
Parker old skooling the Cavs…
Well tp will make wide open 16 fters and layups all night
Parker eating Shump alive
Crowdah!
2 on Love….
I expect a win tonight just based off the team exerting max energy from being embarrassed. I don’t expect it to carry over to the next game.
They need to stop jacking up quick js and contested js though. Their d hasn’t been awful so far, relatively that is. That isn’t all that impressive I guess though.
Three points to go…
Shump & Frye for Hill is a good deal for us.
TT and shump and it would be better
Nate… you must love that new Mila Kunis commercial
I had an extended breakdown on a lt you issued.
Tony Parker… leading the charge…
Shump misses a long 2 early in the shot clock.
After 10 seconds on the court. Nice
How I have missed watching that.
Nice shot Shump!!

Parker off the bench… get DWade in so it can be old v. old…
Isaiah trying to be more of a distributor
???
Seem him pass more so far.
More than what? Zero?
Exactly!
JR… still dry…
LeTruck. Like that better. LeTruck > LeChuck.
Good save by IT there…
Lol. Kev didn’t move and Aldridge jumped into him.
I would hate to lose Channing. But if Lue won’t play him…..
Five points to go…
So many Crowder threes/long twos…
Lol. Spurs trying hockey style line change
George Hill not playing tonight for the Kings…
Don’t like the fact that Shump is playing. Either he isn’t in the (possible) trade, or Lue’s an idiot for taking the risk of playing him.
ETA: Or the Kings don’t care about Shump and he’s just in the trade for salary purposes.
They don’t care about Shump…
Congrats to KLone on his all star selection……and class as a professional
Unintentional misspell… yet somehow appropriate…
Maybe that thought was in my sub conscious
Spurs with too many men on the field… that’s an odd thing to happen to a Pop team…
too much settling for long twos.
IT’s next contract keeps shrinking.
LeChuck + LeBrick.
Wow… IT jump pass to the guy defending him…
This is like anti-rim protection…
I could have scored on that Kyle Anderson uncontested layup…
LBJ jumper still wack…
I will certainly not miss hearing Fred say “he got Shumed” if Iman goes in the Hill deal. Maybe one of the last times for that phrase tonight

For once JE gets something right
LeBron loves attention and hates January’s. The dude just loves drama and chaos. By mid-May, this will all look silly.
He is kind of lazy. And passive aggressive. Nor am I impressed with his ‘leadership’ style.
I am not a fan.
Pop calls TO after 1 possession.
Cavs played us all. Kevin Love went viral because he’s an All-Star. Only us Clevelanders could be pissed right now. Here’s Iman Shumpert with the weather…
Trade Shump, JR, TT, IT, and AT&T for Anthony Davis
Hehe. NO would laugh at that. The only person getting traded for AD on this team would be LBJ if he agreed. We don’t have any other assets NO would want for AD.
congrats to klove on all star vote —VERY DESERVING !!!
Good game to showcase Shump to make him a more desirable chip in the upcoming Kawhi trade…
I thought he was going to be a key piece in the Anthony Davis trade?
Hip hip…

YES!!!

I guess we will hold off on that trade with Kings.
Media blowing this team meeting out of proportion, IMO. Yes, it was probably heated but it’s also necessary if the Cavs are going to get better. The players SHOULD be pissed by getting embarrassed so many times.
NBA needs storylines like this to get through the drab of the middle of the season. What other drama is going on in the league to distant from the inevitability of the Warriors winning?
To distract**
So if Kawhi wants out of San Antonio, we package the Brooklyn pick + IT + anything but LeBron and Love to make it happen, right?
Kawhi is probably not worth much the rest of the season, but it keeps LeBron in Cleveland and gives us 2 of the top 5 players in the NBA…
Jalen Rose is the “source” of the Kawhi-out-of-SA rumor, so probably 100% untrue, but we can dream, right?
Yes there is no way on earth Kawhi is available
The Spurs wouldn’t even trade Kawhi for LeBron
“Available” and “player demands trade” are different though. I would be SHOCKED if Kawhi is demanding a trade out of San Antonio, but it isn’t the craziest thing to ever happen in sports.
The good news is that we could put together a pretty damn good package for the guy. Unfortunately, Boston could probably trump it..
Depends … is he the cover boy for NBA2K?
Yeah, I’ll believe in Santa Claus before I’ll believe Leonard is going anywhere…
Trying to decide which team I hope Channing signs with after he gets bought out by the Kings (after the George Hill trade is official)…
I could see him with Portland, since he lives there in the off-season.
They already have so many bigs though
It would be nice to watch LBJ get his 30,000 but I’m also intrigued on how the team will respond after the beat down against the Thunder.
If they look terrible again tonight what will finally happen with Lue. They got 2 days of practice so they shouldn’t look bad at least on defense I guess.
This upcoming games are extremely important IMO if the team doesn’t bounce back and get some W’s then the Cavs FO will need to make some changes for sure.
Wonder how many re-tweets he’ll get from his team… Congrats Kev!

Well Pop… I’m glad you asked…
https://twitter.com/CavsFredMcLeod/status/955944351045242883
If the Cavs can’t win this one they have big problems. Sounds like the Spurs are sitting most of their main guys except Aldridge.
They have big problems… Spurs third team plays better defense than Cavs do…
No doubt about that…
This video is begging for either a laugh track or that Wacky Sax song from Benny Hill…
