Podcap: Cavs 140, Wolves 138 in OT (or, How You Remind Me)
2018-02-08https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/episode-159-or-how-you-remind-me
After reaching the lowest depths of doubt, denial and depression Tuesday in Orlando, the Cavs returned home and played possibly the game of the season in reminding us how good they can be when they try. There were contributions up and down the lineup in this unbelievable overtime shootout thriller with the Timberwolves, that saw both teams combine for an NBA record 40 (!!!) three pointers. LeBron James also reminded us of just how great he is… notching yet another triple double with 37 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds… the last few of which vaulted him past Zydrunas Ilgauskas and made him the all time franchise leader in all three categories. Yet, he saved his best for last… draining a turnaround jumper over Jimmy Butler as the final buzzer sounded. It was arguably his greatest game winning shot in a regular season game during the LeBron 2.0 era.

It was great to see LeBron smile again. It was also great to see the Cavs free Cedi Osman from the bench, as he came up with some terrific and much needed hustle and defensive ability. But, did it change the narrative going forward? Will it be a turning point in the season when we look back? Does it alter what the Cavs do in the next 12 hours or so with the trade deadline looming? To try and answer some of these questions, as well as thoroughly break down this dramatic and genuinely enjoyable victory, Nate, Tom and EG piled into the booth to chop it up.
And, if you’re wondering about the subtitle of this podcap… well, you’ll hear the inspiration for it pretty quickly as you tune in. As always, you can listen above, on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.
Enjoy, and GO CAVS!

Lakers can drive the Brinks truck to IT’s condo this summer…
I hope they protected that pick…
Knowing Gilbert, probably unprotected…
Why would it matter? Barring a LeBron injury, it’s not going to be a lottery pick..
Good point… I keep thinking a year ahead
If Broussard likes it… I’m nervous

Dumping IT (and thank god) makes me think the Hill deal will get done…
So, Clarkson starting unless there’s another George Hill shoe to drop?
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/961649269609508864
Wait… I thought you wanted this trade?
Yeah? How is this worse than having to keep IT, even for Hill and still losing Frye?
Gonna miss Channing
Will miss Frye… but not IT

So down if this is for nance and Clarkson
Clarkson’s a 32% three point shooter and his advanced stats aren’t good. What am I missing?

If we were willing to take Dwight & Batum, perhaps. Kemba makes 12 this year & next. Dwight 23.5 & 24. Batum 22.4, 23.8, 25.5, and then a PO for 27.
We give them IT on a 6.2 expiring, JR (13.8, 14.7, 15.7), TT (16.4, 17.5, 18.5) & Shump (10.3 + PO for 11).
The salaries match. We throw in our 1st. Huge take out the trash trade.

Ya, so far a disappointing deadline. Fingers crossed for some action in the last 3.5 hours.

Kemba would be a solid get, but not the BEST fit. Would also cost too much.
If we ended up with George Hill and DeAndre Jordan, somehow (probably less than 1% chance), I would be extremely happy. Would plug 2 of our biggest needs (defense and more defense).
Dope Venom teaser dropped this morning…

Nelson is a solid vet. Will help Detroit. Bulls in full tank.
Love that teams are somehow waiting on the Jo Noah buyout… LOL
Four hours. No deals yet.

hell might as well keep posting ——maybe now ty might give ‘ZZ” some run and be ” pleasantly ‘ surprised again—why not give him some minutes ty –( he did have think 24 pts / 16 reb’s in 28 minutes the other night )——Jason– Nets pick getting tight –only concern now is that with ‘the unicorn ‘ out for the season / knicks—they might falter into contention also for high draft pick

Dwight Howard. The ultimate smile too much.
And Aaron Gordon is great at a host of things. Can defend 4 positions, has decent dribble drive handle for a 3/4 wing, has improved his shooting drastically. Has crazy bounce. Dude would be an absolute stud next to Bron.
Parker was a Raptor before he joined the Cavs, and was really good for them.
Good call on D12 for the All Smiles Team!
Sadly, saw this morning that the Magic were making EVERYONE on their team available to trade… other than Gordon and Isaac… Oh well…
I’d be happy to grab Fournier, Simmons, and even moderately ok with Speights or even Biyombo depending on the deal.
Biyombo has one of those awful contracts. $17M for three years.
Since when is just under $6M per an awful deal? We have like four worse deals than that on the Cavs…
No, that’s 17 mil per year for three years. Sorry I wasn’t clear on that.
Ah… right
All I know is that Gilbert better offer IT for Marcus Smart, or else.
What, are we suppose to applaud Lue now? I know “better late than never”, but this whole thing simply spells out just what a poor coach Lue is. Cedi has shown this effort and understanding of rotational defense the whole year. He has shown it in International play. He is consistent. He plays the correct angles and works hard to boxout on every possession. He’s great guarding 2s and 3s, decent at guarding the 1, and adequate at guarding the 4. He’s also a good PnR player if he were to ever get a chance. That it took all this… Read more »
Totally agree. Lue finally figured out something that we’ve been saying for months. He’s awful.
I hope Gilbert isn’t that dumb!
I’m not arguing with you. Cedi and Channing make me simultaneously happy and furious.
Right on Cedi. Hyperbolic on IT. If you are wanting to trade him, he needs to show something positive to increase his value. So he has to play. If you are wanting to keep him, or considering it, he needs to play so you can see what you have or don’t. Ditto if you want to make a move. Do we need a PG? Wing? Center? How to prioritize? In each case, he needs to play. So to Rose & TT. Agree that they have played too much (Frye, Cedi, Calderon too little). But you have to see what you… Read more »
Well his only value is as an expring at this point. He is up at the end of this season, so if they can’t trade him they should buy him out the rest of the year or bench him.
Absolutely loved the run Cedi got last night and I hope Lue sticks with what he said about needing to get him more minutes. You can tell he cares about every possession and he is a ball of energy. I still hope the Cavs make a move but hope they can hold that BKN pick. It is currently 8th but they only have 2 more wins than the teams currently in the race for #1. I’d love to see them get a deal done for Clarkson and Nance JR. To me they seem like they would be good fits who… Read more »

For the record, IT was a not horrible but still team low -6 last night. 13/3/7 with 3 TOs, 4-8 FGs and 3-5 from deep.
No starter was in positive territory: TT -4, Crowder -2, James -1, JR 0.
No reserve was in negative territory: Frye 0, Rose +3, Green +6, Korver & Cedi +7.
Haha…. Nice!!!!
The turnaround.
Nice. We all hope literally & figuratively.
Nets lost again last night, so did everyone else. Getting awful crowded at the bottom. Wins:
17 = Mavs, Hawks, Magic, Kings
18 = Suns, Grizz, Bulls
19 = Nets
Tonight at light night at the bottom:
Hawks at Magic (someone to 18)
Mavs at Warriors
Deadline moves could have a serious impact on how these teams finish.

thank you ” FATHER SIMMO ” for your blessings !!–ha-ha
Great game to be at tonight. Still a little hoarse from yelling. Mentioned last night there were two signs in our section that read, “Free Cedi.” As discussed on the pod, it’s absolutely criminal that Osman hasn’t gotten at least 20 minutes a game from Lue. Given the team’s malaise this is an absolute WTF on Lue. Regarding the discussion that IT was serviceable last night, here are the stats tweeted last night. In the 31 minutes Thomas was on the floor, the Cavs were -17.1. In 22 minutes off the floor, the team was +23.7. Horrific. I don’t think… Read more »
How do you have a fractional plus minus in one game? That makes no sense.
Nate, those were the exact numbers in a CtB tweet last night @CavsTheTweets. I copied it and didn’t do the math. The numbers were from a tweet sent by mzavagno11, who occasionally writes I think for that other Cavs blog.
Lol. Clearly those are averages
I think they’re the per 100 pos numbers
When you have a fractional member of the team…
“bless me father for I have sinned “–( breaking my no ctb Lenten vow )—-BUT THANK YOU LEBRON / CAVS for at least that 1 thrilling / entertaining game —-felt like old times !!!——wow IT looks like a little 4th grader waiting for cedi / LeBron’s autographs —-will be an interesting day for the cavs / rest of the league to see what shakes out —-oh yeah BIG SHOUT OUT FOR THOSE BUKEYES —WHAT A GAME LAST NIGHT UP IN PURDUE !!!!!!—-ok see you guys in april ( unless LeBron / cavs do something exciting again —will “sin ‘ once… Read more »
Not technically a sin, as long as you strive each day to achieve your vows….and I think last night’s game would be considered extenuating circumstances!
Good to see you NOMAD! Know how you love those Buckeyes!

Man. Does PG sound like someone got to him and told him he’s going to la. Wife or girlfriend or something.
I was expecting the intro song to be “This Is How You Remind Me”… Talk about disappointment…
Oh, wow, Nate coming in hot to not disappoint!
Clearly has received some vocal coaching from Ben.

IT is kinda like fireball whisky. good in small amounts. problem is ty lue is an alcholic. as such we need to trade/dump IT
Thoroughly enjoyable pod as always, thanks guys.
Having been saying to my NBA-watching friends most of this year that the Wolves are no joke. The fact that Cavs were engaged and went toe to toe with them (that game chart shows what a tussle this was) even while the Wolves were scoring at such a high clip is encouraging.
Hoping the Cavs shed some dead weight in the coming hours & start to ascend…

Sucks that it took Lue 53 games to figure out that Cedi is a bulldog on defense. If he had had 8-12 meaningful minutes in the first 25-30 games and then increased that to 15-25 minutes a night, he would be even better than he currently is.
Hoping this is a wake up call for Lue and LeBron. They need his energy and hustle out there. Cedi was the first player LeBron chest-bumped after hitting the buzzer beater and you could tell it was real.
If only they’d give Zz some playing time.
Kid can play.

Have not heard the podcast yet but I think Bron’s game winner over then Chicago Bull Jimmy Butler in Game 4 of the 2015 EQF is greater than this recent game winner. Bulls would have taken a commanding 3-1 lead and perhaps Cavs lose the chance to even go to the ECF that year and alter history.
Don’t disagree… that’s why it says regular season game winner…
I stand corrected. Hey, cut me some slacks, I read it in the wee hours.
Just saw now how Jimmy Butler was so incensed when asked by reporters about the block. I think he is livid because Bron got him good both on defense and offense in a span of less than 5 seconds. Surely the fact that this was Bron’s second game winner against him added to his ire.
Coincidentally, Froggy Fresh has faded into obscurity.
