Recap: 76ers 108, Cavs 97 (Or, No Shame In Losing)
2018-03-02The 76ers came into the Q and played like a good NBA team with legitimate superstars in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. That’s what they are at this point in The Process. They have a 2.6 net rating, which is good for ninth in the league. And, they have the fourth ranked defense in the league. The Cavs shot just 41.4% from the floor on them and went 9-32 from deep.
Offensively, the Sixers are plenty decent. They play a score by committee style game with lots of passing. They hit 44.4% from the floor and dropped 10 3s tonight. Both teams took great care of the ball turning it over just nine times each making this game a treat to watch. The real story of the night though was the the performance of Cleveland’s bench against Philly’s starters.
When the game was done just two of Cleveland’s first five managed to score more than ten points, Rodney Hood and LeBron James. All five of the Sixers’ starters scored more than ten and four of them scored more then 15.
The difference between the starters showed quickly, as the 76ers led by as many as eight in the first quarter. They were red hot from 3-land hitting five of their first six heaves. The Cavs had trouble getting down the court to contest the 3-ball. Robert Covington leaked out twice for 3s with Joel Embiid firmly controlling the boards by himself. J.J. Reddick put up nine in the quarter on his way to 22 points.
The Wine & Gold managed to hang around because they have LeBron James. James matched Reddick’s nine in the quarter on his way to 30 for the evening. James had a near triple-double with nine boards and eight assists. At one point in the first, the King had back-to-back and-1s. One of them was a candidate for crossover of the season.
With Robert Covington and Joel Embiid trapping him after a Tristan Thompson screen, the King saw fit to split the trap with a behind the back dribble. And, just for extra measure, he threw it between TT’s legs because “why do it the easy way, and TT needs to be in a highlight that’s not him being owned by Emiid this game.”
https://twitter.com/World_Wide_Wob/status/969383566697213959
TT was beat by Embiid nearly the whole night, and his inability to contain him contributed to the 76ers getting the lead early. Tristan had six points and 11 boards, while Embiid put up 17 (7-18 shooting) to go with six assists and 14 boards. We’ll come back to TT later though.
The Cavs could have been done early in the evening if it wasn’t for the bench mob coming in with 3:24 in the first and holding the Sixers to just four points the rest of the quarter, while scoring seven themselves. That put the Cavs down just 32-29 after one. The bench was clutch.
They outscored the Sixers’ bench 37-25. As soon as Kyle Korver and Larry Nance Jr. came in, they started to double Emibiid when he’d get the ball down low. The first time they did it Embiid tossed it out into the backcourt for a turnover. Korver did a fantastic job the whole evening crashing and recovering to stop 3s when Embiid touched the ball. He finished the night with nine points on 3-7 shooting from deep.
Nance was the brightest spot though. He had 13 points on 5-7 shooting to go with seven boards, three blocks, and one steal. He quickly noticed Embiid is a bit shy about leaving the paint and over eager to help his teammates when guys penetrate. Nance regularly hopped out or cut according to wherever Embiid was at. Nance also had a pretty steal on him which he took coast to coast to tie the game at 36 in the second quarter.

The teams traded baskets for much of the second but in a “smash each other with rocks” kinda way. The Cavs had to get a little LeBron heavy. The King either scored or assisted on five of the Cavs six made baskets during the final seven minutes before halftime to be down, 59-56.
In the third quarter, the Cavs managed 15 points while the Sixers put up just 18. Both teams played pretty good defense. Neither hit a 3-pointer. The Cavs continued to try and get the ball out of Embiid’s hand when Korver and Nance shared the floor. Nance continued to exploit Embiid’s over helping, knocking a dunk down and hitting an uncontested jumper. Ben Simmons scored 10 points all near the basket. His post game baffled Cedi Osman a couple times. Simmons finished the night with a LeBron-esque 18 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds.
The Cavs entered the fourth quarter down 77-71. With LeBron on the bench, they couldn’t score. Philly extended their lead to 13 over the first three minutes. The Cavs made their push though on the King’s back when he checked back in. They ripped off a 14-5 run to get within two, 87-85, with 5:22 left. James assisted on two 3s during the run and added four points of his own. Kyle Korver later hit a 3 with with 2:25 to go to bring the Cavs within one after he sprinted into a Larry Nance screen to get free. Unfortunately, Dario Saric came down the floor and bombed a 3 from the corner after LeBron left him to stop Ben Simmon’s from getting an instant layup. Saric even yelled at the Cavs bench. He finished with 16 points and nine boards.
Embiid followed the Saric 3 with a heavily contested turnaround jumper from the baseline to put the game out of reach for the Cavs.
Love how cocky the Sixers are. Saric hits a 3-pointer and stares down the Cavs bench….then Joel Embiid his fade-away jumper and points at Cavs fan pic.twitter.com/chL09TBcQ4

Gripes
- Tristan Thompson should no longer be playing. Embiid had TT shoved under the rim the first time he touched the ball in the 1st. Tristan fouled him. Embiid established position against him all night and TT couldn’t do anything about it.
- TT also decided he could be an offensive player for this game. Trying to be like Joel, he attempted a jump shot against him early in the first. It was swatted. A little later, he decided to drive against Amir Johnson. Again, swatted.
- TT’s complete inability to dunk or dribble after catching the ball without gathering killed him this game too. Embiid often left TT to help out his teammates, but anytime Tristan caught the ball he took too long to do anything with it and Embiid was already back in position to defend.
- Jeff Green, Rodney Hood, and George Hill didn’t great games, but they weren’t actively hurting the team. They combined to go 9-30 from the field for 23 points. Part of the issue with these guys is that they need to get into rhythm. That’s a little hard to do when the team doesn’t always run the most coherent offense. Hood showed some ability to penetrate and shoot off the drive, which the team will need if they plan on beating the Warriors. George hill had a nasty dunk you can check out here.
- Jordan Clarkson had ten points and four assists. He could of had more assists. He’s not always reading the game though. He’s deciding he’s going to score or going to pass before defenses do anything. There were several times he didn’t find Korver when Korver was wide open.
Hypes
- The Larry Nance hype is real. He hung with Embiid tonight and did not get had at all. His defense, even on the turnaround Embiid hit to seal the game, was impeccable. Offensively, he is reading the game at an extremely high level. He knows exactly where to move in order to be open when his man looks away. His ability to can a fifteen foot jumper keeps guys from playing free safety when they have to cover him. If his jumper continues to evolve, he will be another pick and pop option for LeBron to use.
- LeBron played another stellar game. He took control when he needed to and made sure to get enough guys involved to keep everyone active.
- He made the bench guys much better and the bench subsequently made the defense a lot better. Their willingness to help each other out when beat is awesome to watch. Kyle Korver covers an absurd amount of ground for being an older guy. He may not be a stopper, but he gets to the exact textbook spot on defense whenever he has to rotate.
This game was a fun watch. It’s hard to think about the Sixers as a legit team, but they are. The Cavs played solid and if a few more shots fell for them, they could have easily won. If a few of the 3s Philly hit early on didn’t fall, Cleveland could have won. If Tyronn Lue didn’t play the starters as much as he did, Cleveland may have won. The have a chance to pick up a W Saturday when they host Denver.
Cannot botch that possession…PSU up one, about three seconds left…
DAMN !!!!!
I do love the effort from Dakitch…he gives it everything…
Bates-Diop and Carr are both unguaradable…
Going down to the wire, Bucks up 2…
Carr with the silly banked in three…Lions seem to get loads of breaks against Buckeyes…
intense –I like it !!—-wizards up big early on the raptors—-wiz playing so much better without WALL —- would you trade the nets pick even up for Wall ?
I would not, purely based on Wall’s knees and contract…
Kam Williams!
Knotted up with just under five and a half minutes left…OSU-PSU, feels like an NCAA tournament game…Buckeyes playing hard…

Third foul on Tony Carr, that’s significant…
Love Tate…dude just does the dirty work inside…
got to keep tate out of foul trouble —which is difficult _–plays so aggressively——carr might be a ‘sleeper ‘ in the draft –like his game
No idea of his NBA potential, but Carr is ridiculously hard to check as a college player…pretty polished…
PSU defends Ohio State so well…I think the Buckeyes are playing pretty well, but down one at the half…lot of second chance points for PSU…
Tate so tough in the paint…for only being 6’4″ he’s a force…helps that he’s a big body…

Has anyone made a “I bet JR’s soup with piping hot?” crack yet???
thank you nate for making me ” not feel so old “—-aka; soupy sale
still laughing arch –you’ve got your ‘ A ‘ game going today ——national news is having a field day with the ‘soup suspension “
I will “make a bet ‘ with you–I am taking the bucks by 7 pts
Hope you’re right, but it’s just looked like a poor matchup for them in both games this year…the second game the Buckeyes had issues even getting decent shots off…maybe they’ll be schooled up today, and it’s always really hard to beat any team three times in a season…
Buckeyes play their nemesis, Penn State, in a couple of hours…I am expecting a double digit loss…
CAVS NEXT 5 GAMES —NUGGETS TWICE / PISTONS / LAKERS / CLIPPERS ——WHAT IS EVERYONE’S PREDICTION —-I AM GOING WITH 3-2—BEAT NUGGETS ONCE / LAKERS / CLIPPERS —BUT I CAN SEE A POSSIBLE -2-3 LOSING TO THE ‘DRAINO LAKERS ‘
If we lose to the Lakers, I’m throwing my soup at I.T.
I’d guess 3-2 as well, but you just know IT is going to be wearing his superhero cape that game…
I’ll be at that game to step on his cape…
They better go 5 – 0, because I put my money on a 22 – 4 finish.

Not soup opera? I mean, that was low hanging fruit.
just throwing this out there —-Friday / bored ——when was the last ‘true ‘ minutes for jose “put that fork away ‘—–should he be getting any kind of run or is he primarily done for the season ?—any thoughts ?
I don’t think he is going to be used much in the playoffs, if any. We need Clarkson to get acclimated asap, so no need to use those minutes on José.
Good thing about José is that he could be put in in game 6 of the ECF and do a good job, without any previous runs. He’s a solid veteran and knows exactly what’s needed/expected of him.
If we had a top end coach, Jose might get spot minutes in advantageous situations. Unfortunately, Lue is not aware of the concept of game situations.
Ty needs to use this “soup set,” and have Damon Jones deliver a bowl of vegetable medley to Tristan, followed by DJ telling TT that his defense sucks.
French onion was my choice for today —-give a bowl to t.t. so he can throw at ” lagenburgerbaskets ‘ –maybe both will get suspended —-yes JRL/ AGREE —–please ty going forward —Nance at least 30 + minutes and the other minutes to ANTE —GARBAGE MINUTES TO T.T.

Who hasn’t wanted to throw a bowl of soup at Damon Jones?
My clam chowder was delicious today.
Would have been even tastier if you had thrown half of it at Damon Jones…
That’s what I had as well.
Lue has access to this information…and it’s every game. At least Nance played more last night.
My take on this is that the Sixers went to Embiid more when Nance was guarding him, but it didn’t really work, Embiid did not seem to have a field day against either player, and that the rest of the Cavs’ defense was not particularly good while Tristan was on the court (which may or may not have something to do with him).
I wondered if Nance would be able to keep his fouls under control while checking Embiid, and the answer was a resounding yes. Great game for him, and he absolutely needs to be starting and playing the most minutes. I don’t really care how TT feels about it. You have to play the guys that help you win. If Lue is unwilling or unable to do that, he has to go.
I agree with a lot of the criticism on Lue (rotations, lack of passion, etc…) However, I thought his reported strengths were (besides being a defensive minded coach which seems laughable right now) that Lue is supposed to be a “players coach” a diplomat of sorts and even a LeBron “whisperer.” I wonder just how tied Lue’s hands are when it comes to playing KLUTCH players over CLUTCH players…
I also think JR will show up in the playoffs. He’ll be streaky, but that’s who he is. I have some sympathy/empathy for how he’s been scapegoated/tossed around this season with the Wade stuff. LeBron preaches selflessness and winning is all that matters/etc, but he plays politics/head games/can be ruthless. Damon Jones is one of his Bron’s guys and the dude couldn’t play a lick of defense in his playing days. Probably agitated an already mentally fragile JR, hence “soup to nuts…”
“scapegoated/tossed around”, WTF? Are you under the impression that JR has been playing well, and no one is noticing it?
I think he’s been in disgruntled chill mode like LeBron for most of the season. He was on fire from the Twolves game to the Grizzlies game because I think he was happy with the roster changes. Now I think his starting role is in jeopardy in a way he doesn’t feel is warranted/or he’s getting jerked around about it internally by Lue/Bron/coaching staff, so he’s acting out and getting in his own head which is affecting his play on the court. JR has always been an emotional player/person. I don’t know if I’ve seen enough out of Hood to… Read more »
I’m getting soup for lunch today.
Basically a quick summary of our most recent losses is: 1) Cavs shots weren’t falling; 2) Lue sucks. Hopefully the first item will correct itself. The second item will need to be addressed in the offseason – we’re not beating a legit championship contender with Lue as head coach.
JR needs one of these pillows for future tantrums…
LeBron is #3 on the list of: “These players have the most legitimate complaints”

Nice summary. Surprised to see Dinwiddie at #1.
Nice recap DW… lost in all of this is that Philly had lost their last 11 against the Cavs, and for the first time in a long time actually had enough talent on the floor to beat them… Still, you don’t generally expect the team to go this cold from three point land. Outside of LBJ, Korver and a couple early by Cedi, they were awful as a team from the perimeter… which can’t happen against a team that boasts a legit shot blocker in Embiid…

I certainly blame Lue for the current failures, but Tristan Thompson is right up there with him. He shouldn’t be playing at all. I don’t know what happen to his athleticism, and he has the worst defensive rating on the team.
Too much of both of these things…

HaHa!
Nice cap, David
To expand on what JMay said about Lue, I was still trying to believe Lue was ok as a coach based on what several solid reporters like Jason Lloyd said positively about him. I believe too now that Lue must go in the off season. Beyond his terrible rotations going on like forever, Lue’s lack of strong support for James when he gets hit in the head or throat is totally inexcusable. Lue has talked about not wanting to draw a fine, but really, really? Your irreplaceable star always has to argue with refs about no calls on ugly fouls… Read more »
Agree with Mike. That is what I thought too.
Nance played 26 minutes with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Thompson played only 21 minutes and had 6 points and 11 rebounds. Embiid played 34 minutes and is going to overpower pretty much anyone. Did y’all want Lue to play Nance 34 minutes against Embiid straight up?
https://twitter.com/MZavagno11/status/969589771851980805
Until love gets back nance should be playing 32 min minimum , a few of the other min user tt at the 5 and few to lbj at the 5. Tt ruins everything from offense to defense ! He’s unplayable
How many minutes did Embiid have? Is it 34? Because that’s how many minutes Nance should have had. Embiid abused TT. Nance should have mirrored Embiid all night long. Straight up. Yes, please.
The Nuggets are good. I wouldn’t count on wins vs them.
Nance is the 3rd best player on the team.
We mussed Love & JR.
TT is the 13th best player on the team.
No excuses we’ve got 8 great players! ( who missed jr sloppy spaced out d or inconsistent offense??)
I am confident in one thing and one thing only, Lue will play TT big minutes all the way thru the playoffs. He will suck the life out of this team. Lue is a bad head coach. End of story. Even when we won a championship in 2016 his rotations were hot garbage. He has proven he can’t manage the locker room. He doesn’t have anything close to a competent offensive OR defensive system. He’s utterly emotionless on the court. We can’t be the only ones who see this, right? Right?! Watching Tristan play is absolutely excruciating. His rebounding numbers… Read more »
I’m 100% behind this.
All observations I agree with JMay.
Jmay ur in the money!
I think you are right. I have always thought they won in 2016 in spite of Lue. I have given him the benefit of the doubt because they won. However, he has never put together sustainable rotations or any semblance of solid defensive schemes that fit the personnel since he became coach. The offense, has also never done any favors for the bench units. I don’t think you trade the pick though if they can get one of Ayton, Doncic, Bagley, or Jackson.
Question: do you think LeBron intentionally went between Tristans legs ?
Personally I think that play was a turnover but he got a lucky bounce – he cant possibly have known Tristans leg position as he dribbled …… right?
Yeah. I think he got lucky. Still pretty cool.
100% luck with out question. Don’t get me wrong. Lebron is awesome, he isn’t that awesome.
He’s also a notoriously poor dribbler.
He is pretty good for a guy that size.
TT just isn’t the same. Who is that guy in that jersey? Unrecognizable. I don’t even enjoy watching the starters anymore. (not including Hood) Anymore, I just walk away and tell everyone to call me when the bench comes in.
It just seems our old starters (not Lebron) were content to ride on the championship of 2 years ago and just go through the motions to collect their big fat checks. They don’t play with passion or urgency.
I miss watching Love out there. Before he went down he was playing hard all season. They sure could have used him tonight.
The Denver game will be tough and not an easy win….they have been playing fairly well and have a slew of shooters to go with the Joker who I think is more polished than Embiid. TT should be limited to about 5 min/game and Zicic should get about 7 min per game and Nance gets the rest (36 min). Who knows what to make of JR, thinking the ‘conduct detrimental’ had to do with something verbally said to coaches and since he sucks, Lue had enough. Lot of Cavs 3s tonite rimmed out but they mostly looked good on the… Read more »
Stopped watching on the 3rd quarter when it was obvious the Cavs weren’t going to win it. (Hindsight is great.) The offense wasn’t fluid, to many possessions where it felt as if nobody knew what exactly was going on.
TT shouldn’t be starting over Nance. Sucks because I’m sure Lue will keep playing him until Love comes back, but his regression has led him to an appalling condition. Wether it be age, injuries or the KK curse, he’s a bench player on a regular team. He shouldn’t be playing for a championship contender.
Well, onwards and upwards.
I thought I heard that TNT reported Love will start at the 4 when he comes back. Sure sounds like TT is in the starting lineup to stay…
To be fair, Nance has been mostly playing at the 5 for the Cavs. Hill, Hood, Bron, Love, Nance is probably our best starting lineup then bring Clarkson, Korver, Cedi, Green, and I guess if you have to, TT off the bench since Zizic has clearly entered the BerLueda Triangle…
Oh Lord I TOTALLY agree with you. I don’t know if that leaves enough for the bench, but I guess you’re not running as much full second unit in the playoffs for as long. I’d like to see some Love, LeBron, Cedi, Hood, Hill, and then Nance, Love, Bron, Hood, Hill (and truth be told, I would love the length of a Nance, Bron, Cedi, Hood, Hill lineup, or even Nance, Love, Bron, Hood, Cedi with Bron running point)
I would be giving Zz all of TT’s minutes. Kid has talent but apparently we at CtB (although not all) are the only ones to see it.
BerLueda triangle = awesome.
In the playoffs I think we can get away with no TT. That will require our small lineup to be very effective on the offensive end though. They will need to make sure playing anyone huge against them is impossible. There shouldn’t have been a single moment that Embiid was on the floor when Nance wasn’t.
Thanks David. God, Nance has to play. He has to.
