Recap: Cavs 112, Raptors 106 (Or, Same Old Story)
2018-04-04The Cavs took care of the Raptors tonight for the second time in 13 days. At this point, the Raptors must be wondering what they did to deserve LeBron James being in the Eastern Conference. It doesn’t seem like they are ever going to figure out how to get past the Cavs.
Typically, LeBron James is the one who is ending the Raptors’ dreams. Tonight was different though. Don’t get me wrong, James still played excellent getting 27 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. The rest of the starters, however, all contributed with double digit scoring. Rodney Hood put up 17 points on 6-12 shooting. Jeff Green added 12 of his own, with seven coming in the fourth. Kevin Love had 18 points on 4-8 shooting to go with 15 boards. He went 4-6 from downtown.
And, the real star of the evening, Jose Calderon, put up 19 points to go with four rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block. Jose led the Cavs with a team high +27. Toronto’s backcourt couldn’t handle that explosion. DeMar DeRozan put up 19 along with seven assists, while Kyle Lowry had just five points and three assists.
The Cavs started the evening in a way that had me wondering if they were going to show up. Jonas Valanciunas set a screen on the very first play of the night for DeMar DeRozan before rolling to the rim. Somehow, Jeff Green and Kevin Love stayed high on DeRozan while Jonas got to score over Jose who had to “help” over. The Cavs then botched their defense on the following play to let Serge Ibaka hit a wide open 3-pointer.
This was a theme the entire game. Cleveland kept switching whenever a pick and roll happened. If Jonas or Ibaka were involved though, they would often try to trap and recover. It never worked. There was always a third guy having to rush from the corner to stop a layup and then not being able to get back to run their original man off the 3-line. Or, Jeff Green trying to stop Jonas solo.
It was a miracle the Raptors went just 11-34 from deep with all the defenders Cleveland was sending down low. Jonas ended the night with 17 and 10. Ibaka had 16 and 12. The Raptors outscored the Cavs 56-28 in the paint.
Offensively, Cleveland didn’t do much better to start. Jeff Green missed two 3s badly right away. It took Jose using a Love screen to the basket to open the scoring for the Cavs. Jose had 11 in the quarter on 5-5 video game level shooting and feasted on the Raptors using some LeBron screens in ultimate “I’m old and will outsmart you” mode.
Cleveland also hit five 3s. The King chipped in ten of his own in the opening quarter. After one, Cleveland led 28-24.
Cleveland started the second quarter with Tristan Thompson and Kyle Korver attempting to run some two man stuff, which merited a fail blog post, as neither guy knew where the other was trying to move to. The lead went away quickly because the Cavs simply couldn’t score. Jordan Clarkson was acting like a black hole. In about nine minutes of play in the first half he was 1-6 and -10. The Cavs only offense during the early part of the second came after Jeff Green bricked a 3 so badly TT grabbed the o-board and found Korver falling out of bounds to convert a hard mid-ranger while getting fouled for an and-1 opportunity.
The Cavs went on a push though. Midway in the quarter, they went on a 21-4 run to go up 56-40 with 3:33 left. During the run, Love canned three 3s. Rodney and Jose also dropped 3s. Six of the seven made buckets were assisted on. The Cavs had just 18 assists all night to put that number in perspective.
Jose even whipped a Tom Brady level pass to Hood for a dunk, which is actually pretty fitting considering Jose is dinosaur age like Brady. The pass came after the King stripped Ibaka from behind.
James also had a ridiculous falling out of bounds after going the length of the floor pass to Hood for a 3. Love grabbed the steal that sparked the play.
All good things must come to an end though. Kyle Lowry dropped his only 3 of the game after a slow recovery by Jose on a Jonas screen. The Cavs then gave up a 13-4 run to end the quarter and went into halftime up only eight, 60-52.
Cleveland started the third quarter looking sluggish as usual. In the first minute, Calderon coughed the ball up off of James’ back and Lowry got a layup. Jonas Valanciunas did work in the quarter and got seven. DeMar also got seven. In the end though, the Raptors couldn’t eat into the Cavs lead at all. Cleveland went up by as many as 11, but still finished the quarter up eight.
Towards the end of the third there was a fun sequence where James took a charge from C.J. Miles, but the very next play down James ended up getting called for a charge on Miles. Hood also had a nice shot over Jonas after a switch where he just dribbled into a mid-ranger.
The Cavs started the fourth with LeBron on the bench, but they kept the lead. Jeff Green had a nice floater over Jakob Poetl to start. He followed up with a 3, which helped stop Fred Van Fleet’s attempt to bring the Raptors back. Fleet opened the action with two 3s of his own. Green got further in on Fleet later blocking him when he tried to take TT off the dribble.
James had nine in the final frame. With 1:33 left the starters checked out with the lead at 12. The Raptors cut the lead to four after three straight turnovers and the starters had to come back with 11 seconds left to make sure nothing crazy happened to take the win away.
Gripes
- Per usual, the Cavs defensive schemes were awful. Why switch Green or Jose onto Jonas for any reason ever? He’s simply too big and will scramble the defense when guys crash to help. Again, why trap with a big guy rolling to the rim? The Cavs can’t execute traps well enough to not breakdown after one rotation. Yes, DeMar and Lowry were held in check, but this game could have been much easier if the defensive schemes made sense. The Raptors shot 40.7% for the evening, but it was more a product of missed shots than anything.
- Jonas should have been played off the floor earlier then the fourth and that would have helped the Cavs play better defense, but the Cavs didn’t do anything to make that happen. They didn’t run nearly enough pick and rolls. They didn’t run an offense for much of the evening. It was a lot of standing and one pass quick shots.
- Jordan Clarkson is a chucker, what’s new? He was a team low -15 when on the floor.
- TT scored zero points in 13 minutes. Why is he still playing so much. Larry Nance had six points and one rebound. However, he just looks better and functions better on the floor. He can come out on a pick and roll and not mess up the entire defensive rotation when recovering.
- pleasestopshooting3sjeffgreen.com This will be a site soon enough. Green had 12 points and three blocks, but he took five threes and made just two (which is a great percentage, it’s just too many for him). He can’t be a spot up guy. Larry Drew must figure out a way to get him the ball on the move more, because he’s really effective when he’s cutting or driving to the hoop.
Hypes
- LeBron and Love just put in solid nights of work. They made timely shots and helped right the team to make the game winnable. That’s sometimes all you need.
- Especially when Jose Calderon gets hot. Jose was an animal tonight making his first six shots, and it’s not sustatinable, but there are takeaways to be made. He should continue to start, even when George Hill returns. His ability to use a LeBron screen alone is merit for that. The fact that LeBron lets him bring the ball up court says a ton too. Tonight he morphed into a 20 year old. If he can just be a young 32 instead of 36 most nights, that’s gonna be a win for Cleveland.
- Rodney Hood continues to look more comfortable. His off the dribble game is better than I thought, but he needs to consistently contribute. In the playoffs, he could be very helpful. He’s moving in the right direction.
- This win was a solid one for the Cavs. This loss was a terrible one for the Raptors. The Raptors can’t seem to catch a break against James. They have to be dreading another meeting in the playoffs right now.
Uh oh!

All sorts of bad things can happen when you go under the knife. Trust me, I know. And I am not talking about the ankle debacle.
You take all the hardware out at once, you don’t do it piecemeal.
Yes, I know he wanted a shot to play in the POs, as did the team, but choosing multiple surgeries vs one surgery borders on violating the oath.
Why did he mention standing Rock?
I’d love to hear Kyrie’s dad’s opinion of the Celtic medical staff…
BS is oddly quiet… probably roaming aimlessly at Augusta… LOL
Just think if we would have held onto Kyrie. We would be looking at:
Rose, JR, Bron, Love, TT.
Calderon, Korver, RJ, Green, Frye, Cedi.
No Nets pick. No Hill, Hood, Clarkson, Nance, or Zizic. Likely RJ/Frye retire. Maybe Rose/Calderon/Korver.
And we still are over the cap with Bron (if he stayed).
True… although I suspect they would have still moved Rose, and you forgot to include DWade… lol
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/981946543983996929
Wait, what? Another surgery? I thought his knee was fine? Why would any FA or player trust Boston’s doctors?
Now he’s getting the rest of the hardware (screws and stuff) out of the knee…
Before I had the hardware removed in my ankle (tib + fib fracture) my surgeon said everything looked good.
When I got out they told me I could never play sports again (hoops, soccer, tennis). Apparently the screws & plates obscured stuff on the scans.
Hope Kyrie does not have a similar issue.
In that same story it’s reported that everything is structurally fine…
They shouldn’t ever after their brilliant IT evaluation…if I were Kyrie, I’d consider that very, very carefully in light of his coming free agency…
Actually, the infection sounds like it was discovered while the he was being operated on in March, meaning it had been there prior. So that would be from the 2015 operation.
Or woj is a terrible writer, “The team said a bacterial infection was discovered at the site of the screws when Irving had his most recent surgery, on March 24, to remove tension wire in the knee and that Saturday’s procedure will ensure no infection remains in the knee.”
Discovered during that surgery or discovered post surgery? Not clear.
Whatever the truth of Kyrie’s knee, the Celtic doctors egregiously botched IT’s situation.
How many seasons Kyrie finished healthy ? I think it is two, one Cavs one championship and then last year.
And, he missed the first two months of the championship season…
I guess Kyrie wasn’t bluffing about surgery on the knee… imagine that if the Cavs would have kept him, they’d be looking at a tougher road to get back to the Finals…
All The President’s Injured Men…
Harsh… but couldn’t happen to a nicer GM…
https://twitter.com/ESPNNBA/status/981942444123140096
Pic could just as easily be IT and Marcus Smart…
I don’t get the Ainge hate. You are supposed to try to shaft other teams and have a good eye for talent as a Gm.
Ainge is an A-Hole… always has been
not sure celtics get out of the first round. seems like we really want to hold this 3 seed and play thr 6 and 7 seeds
Yep they need to win that Sixers game. I think Lebron understands that.
Sucks for Kyrie, but Billy Simmons twitter should be fascinating. He was always the guy saying ‘let’s see Kyrie get through a full season’. His twitter will be really good if that goofy Celtics team loses in the first round and the Nets pick rolls up third…
Agreed. Then Philly or Toronto in the Finals. Allows a little more time for the team to jell. Less pressure if we avoid Philly/Toronto/Indy until the ECF.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/981937022628712448
Stevens is going to have his guys try to take people out in the playoffs now. Expect a lot of dirty plays in the second round. Get Perkins here.
Although Smart and Theis are still out and they were the primary candidates (along with Baynes) for dirty plays…
Baynes is going to be tackling Lebron in the air.
Ain’t gonna be no second round for Boston.
I think they lose to the Wiz (who hate them) or Milwaukee. Have a shot vs Miami. With all the resting/tanking the last couple games, stuff is unpredictable.
Bucks have huge incentive to win out (keeping their #1 pick, protected 17-30). 6th in the East guarantees it. Brk, at NY, Orl, at Philly (b2b for Philly) to end it. If the Cavs win the next two, Philly is locked into 4th and likely rests everyone the last game.
If they play the Heat, it will be forever known as the “Kelly Olynyk Series”
Hope Miami falls to 7th. I don’t want to play them with Wade and Miami being LBJ’s mental kryptonite. Don’t even want to test that in the playoffs.
WOJBOMB!

MOAWB!
Kyrie out remainder of season…
Well, shucks. much as I didn’t want to see him go, we all knew his durability was the most likely problem for Boston.
Suspect the Cavs will rest people tonight to be at full strength for tomorrow against Philly. Take your chances tonight and then win out to secure the 3 seed.
I can live with cedi / hill / 1st pick—-would hate to see ” FREE ANTE ” go to the spurs and become the 2nd coming of GASOL ———-do believe LeBron will be more mature / professional in his decision this time around——will definitely make cavs aware of his decision– ( won’t leave them hanging / dry )–so they can plan / draft / trade accordingly—-who knows maybe LeBron is a HUGE STORY / PART OF A BLOCKBUSTER DRAFT NIGHT TRADE ——oh well 1st things 1st—go cavs beat the wiz !!
Just curious what leads you to that assumption about LeBron, NOMAD? He didn’t let the Heat know ahead of time either…
I still think James is staying
just remember last summer when we traded for a ‘ injured player “—have got to make sure of kawhi’s health / emotional / mental status of playing for the cavs / with LeBron
think you can go get a seviciable big / or 2 for rim protection
I was going with the 1st pick / t.t. / ante for kawhi—-sure that might be a ( if LeBron is hinging on leaving ) a big bargaining chip
I don’t think TT and Ante are enough to get that deal done. It’s pretty well known that Pop likes both Cedi and Hill.
Provided there is fire where there’s smoke on the Kawhi trade front… What would the vote be here on something like: Whoever Cavs pick in the lottery this summer, Cedi and Hill for Leonard? It’s not a bad deal (provided Kawhi can come back healthy), and who knows, maybe the Cavs can even package TT if they take someone else on from the Spurs. Not saying the Spurs would do it, although it’s known that they coveted Cedi last summer, and someone like Mikal Bridges might be a Leonard type they could build around going forward. For the Cavs, being… Read more »
If we traded for Kawhi, two things have to happen:
1) Bron has to move to the 4. He hates the banging & will not like it.
2) Love HAS to play C. We get pretty undersized pretty quick. Love also takes a lot of banging.
3) We do not have a PG or someone to check PGs.
4) Does Leonard even want to play? Can he?
I love Kawhi, but picking up a guard or a C/big are easier fits for us.
There are really no C/bigs that are viable for the Lottery pick tbh… if there were, Cavs would have made that trade at the deadline. The only one that was close was DeAndre…
Play Bron a 1
Agree… the NBA has become increasingly positionless with the trend toward small ball… Love and LBJ have both played a decent amount of what you’d call the 5 anyway this year…
Works on offense, but who defends the point? Hood? With Love at C?
Not saying I wouldn’t do it, but I have reservations about the fit, Kawhi’s health, he can be a FA after next year, and his desire.
If we move into Doncic/Ayton range, then I say no.
Not if bagley is there.
Bagley won’t make it past #3…
Cavs will be there. :)
Bagley is in no way the best player in this draft. He is fine. I won’t complain if we get him. But he has a long way to go. He can do nothing down low offensively unless spoon fed and off oboards. Defensively he is mediocre and probably won’t get that much better. Doesn’t have shot blocking/rim protection instincts.
Today in Celtics land
https://twitter.com/brohrbach/status/981679845481607168?s=19
‘Any Celtic is bettaaa than every aaather player in the league, especially if this guy was drafted by the Celtics,’ Heinsohn. ‘He’s gaaaat green blood in his veins. He’ll be ah Celtic faaaevaaaaa,’ again Heinsohn in his insufferably grating NE accent.
Welcome back coach Lue!
Nets tidbit. They play the Bucks tonight. I was worried that they may rest guys after clinching a PO spot and/or seek a 7th/8th place finish to avoid the Cavs in round 1 by losing as they are tied with the Wiz & Miami right now.
However, the Bucks owe their 1st round pick to Phoenix but it is protected 17-30. Currently it sits 15th. If they finish ahead of Miami & Wash, the worst it can be is 17th. They have incentive tonight.
Didn’t realize Philly is on a 12 game winning streak. They peaking at right time. Good for them!
Stinks we have to play them on the second night of a back to back…
They probably think it stinks that they have to play Cavs without Embiid…
19 for Channing tonight for the Lakers. Love that guy. Heading to OT.
Still, we are in tons better shape now after the deals. Rose, Crowder, & Shump all sucked too.
I know this is not going to be popular, but what happened to IT was awful. Boston misdiagnosed his injury & allowed him to play when he shouldn’t have. Now he may never be the same. That sucks.
I actually don’t know if we can put this entirely on Boston’s staff. Sure, they messed up. But from the sounds of things it seems like they gave him the choice and he chose the riskier option to hopefully earn a paycheck. I’m not saying one or the other is true, just that we don’t have all the facts.
Channing Frye getting some PT, but Lakers have no chance without IT to carry them…
Is there such a thing as a Brinks wheelbarrow?
Or possibly a Brinks rickshaw?
Brinks unicycle
Brinks unicycle
Soooo ready for the playoffs to start.
Oh dude, you still have some John Wall, Philly billboards and double dose of Enes Kanter Twitter smack talk to go yet!
Haha yes. Enes Kanter…the guy who thinks he is Joel Embiid but is actually a poor man’s Greg Ostertag.
Raps pretty much locking up the #1 seed with this win…
Really miss James Young as a Celtic. He was a constant reminder of what a clown Bill Simmons is.
Just follow BS on Twitter… that should be a constant reminder of what a clown he is…
That’s true enough, but I don’t need that much affirmation…
Even the biggest Clown, Draymond thinks BS is a clown…
https://twitter.com/Money23Green/status/404149532352471041
I hope Dray thinks he is a shooter. 30.8% last year from deep. 30.3% this year. Jack em up, Shooter.
Celtics at 53 after three quarters on a Morris three…they will likely break 60…
It hurts my eyes even watching the box score in this game… combined 11-46 from three…
FWIW, Miami may want us, given Bron’s issues in Miami.
Playoffs is different than regular season…
No doubt. They are sixth now & hammered the Hawks. They ain’t tanking.
You mean the Hawks without Schroder, Bazemore and pretty much anyone but Dedmon?
Miami will finish with 38 losses if they lose at home to OKC and Toronto. Milwaukee with 37 if they lose to the 76rs in the last game. I’m assuming Milwaukee in 6th.
Raps will likely be resting guys since they’ve all but locked up the top seed after tonight…
Also, Giannis is the only scary player on those two teams…
Celtics really need Marcus Smart out there…1-13 from three, Smart could probably get them the record…
Raps aren’t much better at 6-26…
“Jordan Clarkson is a chucker…”
Et tu DW?
QUESTION —DO THE CAVS REALLY WANT TO HANG ONTO THAT 3RD SPOT AND MORE THAN LIKELY OPEN WITH MIAMI OR DROP DOWN TO 4TH AND OPEN WITH THE PACERS ???——WE ALL KNOW THE MIAMI / LEBRON THING ESPECIALLY WITH WADE BACK WITH THE HEAT
Wonder if the Celtics will get to 60 in this game…
Villanova looks better than Boston does tonight
TRIBE LOSES A TOUGH ONE IN BOTTOM OF THE 13TH —-TIME FOR THE ‘PANIC BUTTON ” RIGHT —-
On train home from that game… that bunt by Simmons when Kluber had the no-hitter going through 5 was bush league… Tribe should have won 2-1 in 9….
mavs to lose to magic to avoid tying the nets with 25 wins—–tanking —the (lost )–NEW FOUND ART
Yep. Both Magic & Mavs on 24..
Do the Raps clinch #1 seed with a win tonight?
Will the Celts shut it down at that point (they play the Bulls next)?
Hope we can hold onto 6th pick going into lottery.
Yes, we want 3rd. Homecourt vs the 76ers in the Finals if they beat the Raps.
“COLLUSION!!” — Nate Smith (probably)
No idea how this goofy Celtics team is beating anyone without Kyrie, since they are atrocious offensively. But they aren’t going to beat anyone who matters in the playoffs with their try hard gritty garbage. Need to score some points.
Guarantee Wonder Boy will instruct his players to muck up the game, better watch out for those bush league plays.
Yeah, I’d rather not play them just because of that.
good pt Jason –on bucks –” players coming up injured ” —–sixers are playing confident / inspired basketball—-1st things 1st—we need to get a ‘w” tomorrow / hopefully get a quick / big lead —play ALL PLAYERS —-CAN YOU SAY ANTE —-rest other players for Friday match up with the sixers —it will be a playoff atmosphere in philly
Was hoping Det could slow Philly down. No Blake or Embiid. Philly up 19 in 3rd as I type.
Pistons loss also means the Bucks clinch prior to the Nets game. Hope they don’t start trying to avoid the #6 seed with losses right away.
Oh no, Lue is coming back.
Btw, what are the chances Cavs could figure out a way to trade for Kawhi?
Doesn’t appear the Sixers plan on losing again, even without Embiid. Cavs had better just beat them.
Cavs-Sixers, ECF.
It’s obvious they like Green over Cedi because he’s better defensively and he’s a veteran. Green was really smart last night to keep shooting within the flow of the offense even though he was cold early. Veteran move IMO.
IMO what I was the coaches would do is find and ride the hot hand. If Green is cold… yank him and see if Cedi’s shot is on. Same deal with TT. If he’s not energized and rebounding, yank him early see if Zizic has some spark.
I would actually argue the point that Green is the better defender of the two. Almost all of Cedi’s defensive assignments have been PGs… That’s a near impossible task for any wing player. Whereas Jeff Green has routinely matched up against other wings.
Seriously?
Sorry, I meant that I was arguing that Osman is the better defender of the two. Mistype.
if he does that the remaining 5 games —I hope HE IS NOT THE COACH FOR PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR !!——AGAIN VERY GLAD / THANKFUL HE IS HEALTHY AGAIN—-HOPE HE WATCHED / LEARNED FROM DREW A LITTLE —-MAYBE EVEN— ‘ FREE ANTE ‘
Just to see how much the trades helped, Cavs from deep this year: Off the charts: Calderon 47.3% Excellent: Korver 43.7%, Love 40.7%, Clarkson 40.0%. Damn Good: Osman 39.1% Decent/OK: JR 37.3%, LBJ 36.6%, Hood 35.7% (total = 38.3% which is damn good), Hill = 35.1% (total = 41.6% = Excellent) Poor: Frye 33.3% (traded, total = 34.3% = poor). Damned poor: Wade 32.9% (traded, total = 29.2% = awful), Crowder 32.8% (traded, total = 32.8% = damned poor). For the Love of all that is Holy, stop shooting those unless the shot clock is about to expire: Green 29.1%,… Read more »
Nice post – kinda surprised to see some of the numbers on paper. By the eyeball test and reputations, would’ve thought Frye was higher and Clarkson/Hill (total) were lower. Also Calderon’s percentage is insane.
I’ll give Lue the benefit of the proverbial doubt given his illness. When he returns on Thursday, he does need to show better game management and reduce his detrimental loyalty to veterans who don’t perform…..like TT and JR most of this year. For example, Drew only played TT 14 minutes last night when he wasn’t very effective and Lue may have played him 30 mins. It also sounds like Drew would continue giving Calderon minutes, and Lue should also. At least 15-18/game once Hill returns. If Lue glues Jose to the bench and overplays TT and JR, I hope he… Read more »
have said that many times—keep ty at home ‘ viewing film “—-happy for ty that he is healthy again —not so sure about him ‘calling the shots ‘ again —we shall see how it unfolds
I think we’re going to the Finals…
Any predictions on how the Lue/Drew situation will resolve this year?
Lue would be perfect as Drew’s video analyst.
If Lue starts blowing games by sitting on his hands, I hope Koby will make a move.
Looks like Lue will be coaching again tomorrow.
BOO!! There are things Drew did that Lue wouldn’t. He played more players and starters had more juice to finish. Lue will live and die with short roatations.
My preference:
Do the Drew
Rue the Lue
Ty will coach it out. If we fail to win he gets canned.
The Jose Calederon thing is fake news. If you dig a step deeper it’s meant to be a different Jose Calderon in Mexico

That makes much more sense, thank you.
Insane but true according to Forbes

I don’t see how it’s possible…is he moonlighting in the drug trade?
Well, he’s been getting paid to play basketball since he was 17 years old. He must have made some intelligent financial decisions along the way, as well.
if he’s worth 2+ billion, he’s worth more than any basketball player, ever. Jerry Seinfeld is ‘only’ worth 700-800 million….I just don’t believe it…
He owns some massive goat farms in Spain…
Highlight of the season for me: watching Eli’s video of Lebron destroying Lowry while he yells “BBQ CHICKEEEEN!!” on the CtB Twitter feed. Check it out if you haven’t seen it.

This is great lol
THINK R.HOOD is about to get a NICE contract this summer from the cavs —AKA;–t.t./ swish ——believe LeBron really likes hood / believes in his potential / wants him around in a cavs uniform ——reason for HOOD ” getting rich ‘ this summer
When the trade happened, I think a lot of folks (myself included) thought that a Hill, Hood, James, Love, Nance starting 5 was where we were headed. JR & TT placeholders until the new guys got up to speed.
I think we are almost there. Injuries have messed things up, and Jose playing almost too good to sit. But Hood is looking more comfortable. Needs to do more than score, however. Help clean the glass.
Gah! Lillard rolled his ankle last game & has a lot of swelling. Look for him to sit out a couple games. #3 not wrapped up yet & gives us a real good shot to finish ahead of #3 out west.
good recap–watched replay this morning—-still think in limited minutes ( I know it’ANTE ” GOING TO HAPPEN )—ante can defend Jonas as good as t.t— still concerned with the stubbornness of this coaching staff on their decisions —-DEFENSIVE SCHEMES / FEW MINUTES FOR –LNJ —-T.T. ‘S SAME MINUTES —–COACH / TEACH –GREEN / CLARKSON ON THEIR ROLES–WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THEM !!!——DO NOT FORGET JOSE WHEN HILL IS HEALTHY FOR GOD SAKES ———yes like the way HOOD is adjusting / feeling more comfortable —–the lobs to LNJ ARE CLOSE —–HE COULD HAVE / SHOULD HAVE HAD AT LEAST 2 IF… Read more »
I jumped on David for the 2/5 thing, but I do agree about Green taking early shot clock 3s. We should stop that. Jeff was awful early but quite good late. Green handling the ball also could be a check on Clarkson’s tunnell vision.
Korver looked a bit off after the layoff.
For every 3 Green hits, I hear a nail of a future coffin of a Cavs loss being hammered into place. Love his inside game though.
It looks as if Cedi/Ante will not get PO minutes. That brings us down to 11 guys who are trusted. I think we should go ahead & sign 2 vets for the PO run. Perk & Tony Allen seem like the best candidates. Along with whomever GSW cuts to make room for Cook on the PO roster.
I don’t think the Cavs can get whoever the Warriors drop. To be playoff eligible, they had to be cut sometime in March.
Out west, Denver neat Indy & the Clips came from way back to beat SA. The Blazers lost in Dallas & GSW won in OKC. Denver beat Indy last night, so we at least have a tad nit of cushion there. No seed is set out east where: 1) Raptors are 2 up on Boston & host them tonight. 2) Cavs & Sixers are even in the L column & play later this week. 3) Indy is 2 back of the Cavs but 4 up on the Wiz/Heat/Bucks, who are all tied. 4) Bucks are not clinched yet. Something there to work with? A bit of an understatement Lloyd. Dude has played at an all-star pace in limited minutes. No reason he shouldn’t have gotten every single TT minute against the Raptors.
Sorry, David. Can’t agree with you on Jose starting when hill returns. Jose should get a steady 15-20 a night but he shouldn’t be playing starters minutes. Also believe that the best three man combo for Clarkson is lebron and calderon who can temper his tunnel vision. Jose just isn’t a good enough defender (and Lowry stunk) to start in the playoffs. But 15-20 awesome minutes? Absolutely.
+1
That second quarter was awesome. Cavs looked unstoppable
If the current standings hold, I think there is a real chance of Cavs hosting every round in the East. Wizards beat injured Celitcs, and one of Bucks/76ers beat the Raptors. But getting way ahead of myself here, 3 seed is nowhere near locked up
Yes This >>> “He should continue to start, even when George Hill returns.”
The Raptors have no superstars, and borderline stars, thats why the Cavs beat them more often than not….Lowry is hit or miss, Derozan brings it but isn’t talented enough, Jonas is a stiff, Ibaka a stiff and head case, and CJ Miles? Van Vleet/Fleet? some guy named Norm Powell or whatever? Im more worried about Celtics, Bucks, and 76ers than these teams, those teams have some legitimate talent and can make things interesting. 76ers game coming up should be a dandy…GO CAVS!
Heat, Wizards, and Bucks all tied in the standings right now. I think I’d most like to see the Cavs face the Wizards to avoid Giannis and Lebron’s weird play against the Heat. Nevertheless, not really scared of any of the three.
Yes, the difference of this game within the series between these two teams for mine was defence. Raptors did not look like they were capable of stifling the non-Lebron scorers, particularly the mid-range jumpers (mostly Hood, Clarkson & a little bit from others). I didn’t think Cavs played great D, thought Raptors shot was just off – but listened to Jim Chones saying otherwise, so I went back & watched the game again. He’s right, the “intangibles” that came from Cavs effort payed off regularly.
For the paint chip loving readers, I at least found this interesting:
15. Rodney Hood (17 points) and Jeff Green (12) also gave underrated showings. Hood, it seems, has become a LeBron favorite.
16. According to several sources, James has indicated he believes Hood will be a big-time player for the Cavs in the playoffs, as well as for years to come.
17. If nothing else, that would mean free-agent-to-be LeBron is at least talking excitedly about the Cavs’ future in private.
(From Amico’s latest ‘dribbles’)
Yeah Amico is not wrong. There is a physical reaction to plays made by Hill, Hood, Nance, and Clarkson that nobody else gets. Maybe Cedi…Bron really likes Cedi but must think he’s not ready to contribute in the playoffs. But it’s visible. When those 4 have good games Bron is more excited than anyone. I never bought into the theory that Lebron was the superman of team building…but those guys are all new, and all hungry. And Lebron is visibly more excited when they succeed? I’m starting to believe the theory…
As LeBron gets older, becoming a GM someday might seem attractive, and he is perhaps getting interested in team building.
Great cap Dwood! Only got to see a little of the game so this was a fun read. I love that immediately you got crap for Jeff Green shooting 40%…haha i thought it as soon as I saw it. But the point is still valid…he would be better served to be cutting toward the basket when Lebron needs an outlet. He could finish Krakken’s from Lebron like a mother. Boston missed a huge opportunity tonight. They’d be a game back with a matchup coming up with the raptors and possibly find their way to the top seed. Would be great… Read more »
I agree that Green needs to shoot less 3s, but you complain that he ONLY hit 2 out of 5. That’s 40%. Most of the NBA would be thrilled to shoot 40% from three. So, good point, bad example. And about Clarkson…yes, he is a volume shooter. Yes he has a bad night. But most of his shots were not bad shots, his touch was just off. 2 games ago he shot 9 for 13 including 4 for 4 from 3. Last game he shot just over 55%. Im glad he was a “chucker” for those games. Just because he… Read more »
I should of clarified that. Those first two attempts were so horrific.
The thing with Clarkson that is so aggravating is the complete lack of vision. He’s a black hole. And, he’s missing easy passes.
Yeah, he doesn’t even try to look for other players most of the time. He’s like Kyrie at his worst when he does that, and of course nowhere near as skilled a shotmaker.
I definitely agree there. Though from seeing how Clarkson remembers to look for Nance I lile to believe Clarkson’s vision will improve as he grows more comfortable with his new teammates.
It is interesting to note that if you compare Clarkson’s per 36 minutes stats to Kyrie’s in his 4th year, they are eerily similiar. Not as many assists, but Clarkson isn’t really playing PG most of the time.
He has flaws, but I still see lots of upside to his game.
2/5 is 40%. That is smoking hot for Green from deep. And good for anyone, but especially after missing the first two.
Good cap otherwise.
Sadly it means that Green outshot Hood, Clarkson, and Korver! from the 3 point line.
Still would rather have those guys taking 3s of course…just funny to notice.
