Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 1 (#TryTryAgain)
2018-05-01The Toronto Raptors did not succeed against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 playoffs, losing in six games… so they tried again in the 2017 playoffs… and got swept. 2018 brings another year, and another opportunity to try, try again. Only, this matchup should be different because neither of these teams is really the same as they once were.
The team from the North may still have many recognizable names from their past two iterations, led by an All-Star back court tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry, and featuring big men Jonas Valanciunas and Serge Ibaka in their starting five. However, the difference isn’t only in their overhauled bench unit, but also in their overall philosophy of play as a team under head coach Dwayne Casey. The Raps have mostly transformed themselves away from an ISO heavy reliance on their star guards, and have embraced a balanced inside-out attack. They have real gunners on the perimeter, including CJ Miles, Fred VanVleet and Delon Wright, in addition to the already dangerous Lowry. Even DeRozan spent last summer focusing on his three ball with a decent degree of success. Add some length and energy in the form of Pascal Siakam and Jacob Poeltl, and there’s a demonstrable reason why Toronto finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
Which leads to another thing that’s different… this being the first time the Raptors have home court advantage over the Cavaliers. That’s because the wine & gold limp across the border, battered and bruised from a roller-coaster season that landed them in the four seed, and led to a harrowingly physical series against the upstart Indiana Pacers. Injuries, roster upheaval and role uncertainty have all plagued the Cavs, requiring LeBron James to put forth a near superhuman effort to carry the team much sooner in these playoffs than anyone expected. Without some timely help here and there from the few veterans populating the Cleveland roster, the Raptors could have very well not even had the opportunity to try and redeem themselves against their biggest stumbling block to the NBA Finals.
So, all should be set up well for Toronto, right? They’ve got LeBron and the Cavs right where they want them, no? And, they’ll have all the fans in The Six screaming for possibly four home games, eh?
Yeah, not so fast. There’s a reason Canadians don’t typically have a high degree of confidence in these Raptors. Because when the pressure is on, they aren’t always the most mentally tough team. Sure, they finally exorcised the demons of playoff Game 1s in the first round against the Wizards (they had lost 10 straight Game 1s before that), but they also still seem to be at their shakiest when playing Cleveland. Even with this new, reconstituted squad, they went just 1-2 against the Cavs in the regular season… with the only win coming during that dark period when Isaiah Thomas started for Cleveland. They lost one of the signature games of the season (for the Cavs anyway) 132-129, when LeBron, missing five teammates and his head coach, scored 35 points with 17 assists and zero turnovers to overcome a 79 point half by the Raptors. During the second half of that game, Toronto reverted back to their old ISO ways as the Cavs applied pressure, and there’s no question Cleveland will look to do that once again.
No word yet on which starting five Ty Lue will incorporate in Game 1… although it does sound like George Hill’s back will allow him to suit up and be available…
Ty Lue wouldn't reveal his starting lineup for Game 1. Tristan Thompson was a hero in Game 7, but Jeff Green was very effective against the Raps in the Cavs' two regular season wins against them when they went small. Lue also said George Hill's back is "good" to go.

One thing for sure, however, if the Cavs hope to maintain their dominance over the Raptors, they will once again need some heroics from LeBron James, as well as solid contributions from their veterans. It would be a bonus to see one of their young guys (Hood, Clarkson, Nance Jr.) have a good series, but if the Cavs can defend the way they did against the Pacers (for most of the first round), they should have at least a decent chance to get back to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Sticking with my non-predictions for the playoffs, but I do think there’s a good possibility the Cavs can steal Game 1, especially if they can put the requisite pressure on the Raps.
Catch all the action on TNT starting at 8pm EST… and, as always, chime in below…
GO CAVS!
65% vs 32%… surprised the lead isn’t larger…
Where is Cedi? Zizic? Lue is the worst coach in the history of sports. What an absolute dimwitted clown of a head coach.
They’ll be there about halfway through the third at this rate…
First comment posted then disappeared? Hope that’s not an omen? :)
Sitting here with 4 friends, and the consensus is this team would win perhaps 30-35 games without James. Too harsh?
Nope…. nailed it.
You think this team would win 30-35 games? That’s incredibly generous. They literally can’t score unless the greatest player in the history of the sport is on the court. This roster is absolute trash.
Yeah, I would say 25-30. With a coach with an offensive system, maybe 30-40.
Nah. 50 win team with a better coach.
15-20
Jordan Clarkson is the biggest embarrassment I’ve ever witnessed. How can he suck SO badly? He can’t dribble, he can’t pass, he can’t shoot… he literally can’t do anything useful.
Love with no points. Clarkson with none. Hood with none.
Hey, at least they are consistent.
Offense trash, defense trash…. oy vey.
Very, very lucky to only be down 14…
This lineup cannot score. Obviously cannot score.
If the Cavs had a coach he’d be arguing for a call.
Well, that was underwhelming…
Lue not even trying Jose even though he was huge in game 5.
Feeling a lot like the game where the Raptors scored 79 in the first half…
I hate to say it, but put Calderon in
Yikes…. TT passes up dunk because he’s panicking in the paint…. then KLOVE with great O-rebound and misses the bunny.
Cavs can’t get a call. Poeltle getting all the qhistles
Dammit Love….
Will Hood or Clarkson ever make a shot? SMH
He cannot make a shot.
This lineup is weak sauce…
Black hole lineup here…
It’s so disappointing to know how pathetic this team is sans LeBron.
I think Rodney got fouled, but he’s so weak it’s hard to tell…
Time for Love to do something.
Wow that looked like a bad call on the love foul
Gonna need a better effort closing out shooters, or this will be an easy win for Toronto…
Hood should not play make.
Love Green’s aggression.
Way to push jeff
Yeah… it was a carry…. because he was HELD
Treating Hood like a ragdoll
This is feeling like a blowout. Bron to the bench already? Maybe he’s tired from being burned out from playing all those minute in the first round.
Game 1 is a feel out game
Tell that to Toronto.
Cavs scoring two every time Toronto scores three.
Cavs don’t look high energy…not surprising…
Interesting LBJ sits at the 3:30 mark… this could get outta hand early…
Defense sucks.
Lowry with the YOLO three…
That’s way more continuation then LBJ ever gets… smh
Shocking to see LBJ miss a free throw after that last series…
Somebody missed a rotation on OG…
Raptors owning the paint early.
Good D by TT on DeRozan…
LeBron hasn’t had the chance at any triple doubles because we can’t shoot anymore.
It seems like we’re all being pretty hard on KLove, but in fairness to us, he’s sucking bigtime these days.
The thumb has to be affecting him… but he’s been complaining a LOT the last few games… See where Bron had to wait for him to get across half court?
He has sucked since the thumb injury. No two ways about it. It’s an injury, yes, but this is true nonetheless.
Exactly, he got like 4 decent looks and nothing.
If this is the KLove Cavs will see in this series it may be a long one
Six boards (3 offensive) for JV before he checked out with that second foul…
KLove used to kill in the first quarter. Now he just cannot get going and is playing soft too.
Maybe Lue shoulda stayed with TT in the starting lineup…
Nice charge take by LBJ… second foul on JV…
I remember when every time Love touched the ball wasn’t a turnover… seems like ages ago…
TT checks in…
KLOVE weak with the ball.
JV just bullying Kev underneath with his bad thumb…
I think LBJ missed a pass to JR there… ran the same play and JR was open.
What happened to Kevin Love?
JR needed that. Didn’t flinch on that 3.
Nice tip by JR… but awful paint shot by him and terrible putback by KLOVE.
We let EVERYONE get around the corner. Need D!!
Kevin has to take that three
so far our defense looks broken, but so does theirs. so much softer than pacers. im skeptical of love at the 5 unless he starts stepping up
Just an awful decision to have KLOVE at the 5. They found something that was wildly successful (TT at the 5), and Lue immediately abandons it after one game????
Love’s confidence is shot. Can’t pass up a wide open corner 3 like that.
Already got the paper bag to breathe in.. :)
JR being an idiot on defense.
Nice two man game with Hill and KLOVE… but why isn’t TT starting against JV???
not putting too much stock in this game….just feel game 2 will be better gauge…possible Cavs sneak a win but I think Lebron will force other guys to make plays and then step up later in the game…benches will be biggest key IMO…Clarkson Hood and Nance have to step up….they got full 7 game series to understand playoffs, its put up or shut up now for them…GO CAVS!!!
I didn’t hear a coaching vs coaching matchup during the last pod…but I think everyone assumes DC > Lue. I’m worried that the Raps, after two straight years of getting LeBroned (term I just coined to refer to the fate of any East team w/o LeBron in the past seven years…no matter how good you are and how much you “retooled” your roster is, LBJ will still eliminate you in the playoffs) they are hungry and see this as their last ditch effort to beat the Cavs. Will they horribly choke or will they bring it, a la Cortez burning… Read more »
Do we have a lineup yet?
Hill, Lebron, Love, JR, Korver.
Well hopefully love is on. They could get torched in the paint against JV and Ibaka with that lineup. They will have to prove they can hit shots in order to be effective playing love at the 5. If it is going south, I hope Lue goes bigger sooner rather than later if JV or Poetl is in.
I predict loss – LBJ in survey mode, plus a little tired from Indiana and travel. Game 2 win. Cavs in 6.
Get ready to see tons of Jeff Green minutes (“Playoff J”, as Lue calls him), since he can sort of guard Derozan. Fantastic action.
Nice preview EG.
I think OG Anunoby deserves a word for the Raps. Top shelf defender vs drives, according to the four letter.
If Hill is good to go, that should help. Does that mean he starts? That is the way I read it.
Option 1: Hill, JR, Korver, Bron, Love
Option 2: Hill, JR, Bron, Love, TT.
If Hill does not start, I bet we see Green start with Bron the PG . Hill runs the second unit.
Agree OG has been good… although he was just decently effective against LBJ in the last two regular season games tbh… yet still more effective than anyone else the Raps have to throw at him I guess…
Plus Bron can hide on him on D. Or Ibaka.
