Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Raptors, Game 2 (Do They Blow It Up?)
2018-05-03The Cavs return to the Air Canada Center for game 2 against the Raptors, and the stakes are actually high, just not for the Wine & Gold. The Raptors have faced their demise against the Cavs in the past two playoffs. Last year Cleveland beat them in just four games after taking six games to do the same in the 2016 playoffs. If the Cavs can take game two tonight, the Raptors will hear the noise that they just cannot get past LeBron James.
It’s hard to see them being able to come back from 0-2 and win at least two games on the road or even win four of the remaining five games. I’m getting ahead of myself though. Game one in the series was hard fought by both teams, the Cavs just weathered the storm better down the stretch after coming back from being down by as many as 13 points. Let’s get into tonight’s game.
Three Things To Watch
1. LeBron had a bad game 1. He said so himself to media. He put up 26 hitting just 12-30 from the floor and 1-8 from deep. He also contributed 13 assists and 11 boards. LeBron is sort of right, even though was a large reason why the team won. He won’t be that inefficient again, and he won’t be as tired as he was in game one after playing an emotional game seven against Indy just a day before. The Raptors may think they covered LeBron well last game, but they are fooling themselves. James was just off.
2. Kyle Korver got 17 shots up in game one. That must continue. He hit five of his 12 3-points shots. J.R. Smith needs to keep shooting too. He dropped five of his six 3s. Now, the Cavs must use that gravity this game. Korver and J.R. took just one shot at the rim between the both of them in game one. Teams don’t expect them to cut into the paint, so they can get quality looks when they do actually go down low. Watch in the video below how J.R. Smith is guarded after setting a screen for George Hill. Both Toronto players are pointing to the 3-line. That’s where they assume he’s going. Smith misses the layup shot, but that shot will be there for both him and Korver all night if they want it.
3. The Cavs started Kyle Korver on OG Anunoby. LeBron James started on Serge Ibaka. Tyronn Lue should consider switching those assignments. OG was able to burn Korver a few times with pure speed. He’s not the best 3-point shooter and he’s young, so you don’t necessarily need to stay out on him. LeBron James should cover OG mainly because it would allow him to drop back into the paint with less worry than when he is on Ibaka. OG wants to drive when he can or cut to the hoop. James will stop him if he does that and if he rains from deep, so be it. Serge Ibaka is a good cover for Korver because he’s the type of guy that’s been popping out to 3-land more frequently. Korver doesn’t need to help down low as often as he did in game one. He’s not as well suited to that as James. Ibaka took just three of his eight shots in the paint, so he’s not trying to bang. One of his inside shots was even a tip-in. Korver may not be the biggest guy, but he can play decent post defense and he will stop a lot of the tip-ins that happened in game one just because he boxes out consistently.
The Cavs have a great chance tonight. They survived a ‘poor’ LeBron game and got the win. James should be looking to dominate and take this series quickly with a bounce back performance, so I’m picking Cavs 121-111.
Pretty good quarter… drew a lot of fouls on the Raps… LBJ got rest… still down just 3…
Got Lebron a blow without major damage, but I do not love that lineup.
Hood and Clarkson come in and immediately hijack the O
They are awful. Can’t believe he’ll play those two and not Nance and Osman. Infuriating.
I’ve seen Love squeezing his left hand multiple times – clearly bothering him, but he’s playing through it and bumping bodies down low
Noticed that too.
I really can’t stand Jordan Clarkson.
He was destroyed watching Kobe.
You’ve got that west coast bias tho… lol
It’s odd, because I didn’t mind him for LA. I just assumed he was playmaking out of necessity. I have hope we can break him, but he so clearly lacks awareness.
Raps still blowing layups…
Poetl with a moving screen??????
KLove playing grown man ball
KLOVE draws the foul. They are milking that KLOVE post up.
Love getting his confidence going. Only a matter of time before he’s draining 3s
Great read Hill!!! KLOVE with the easy postup!
Nice hustle JR!
Cavs making a run with Bron on bench… encouraging!
Hill looks spry. Love looks confident. All is good. Lebron isn’t involved too much yet.
JR with a follow up floater… where does he get these shots?
Bron on the bench…
LBJ sitting the final three minutes again…
Need to start boarding. Toronto up 11-3 with 4 offensive
Yup… not starting TT a bad move IMO.
Bron still hasn’t done much and Cavs down just 5…
Just saw RDE’s post about Korver’s shot attempts…. I love it. One of the NBA’s best shooters ever should be getting a ton of shots.
Giving up too many points in the paint, but offense is off to a good start.
That Love shot earlier…

toronto hacking us left and right
They’re getting called for it though…
Hill got away with a definite travel.
I think they let it go because he was pushed…
Terrible defense giving Lowry a step in 3.
Hill with two nifty drives so far…
LOL dumb foul on Anunoby.
So glad Ty Lue is keeping Love on Valanciunas. It worked so well in the first game and he’s sticking with what works. Never change, Ty.
TT incredible tip in off the oop!
That’s TWO OG…

WOW… that should’ve been and one with KLOVE.
Volleyball tip from TT!
Love got fouled but somehow still got it to go!
No look!!
Bad decision by JR there…
Don’t understand the shot selection on the last two possessions
Early TT…
He surely would’ve help snag that rebound that they just gave up.
Two on Korver… not great
Gotta take advantage of that mismatch on Lowry…
Excellent start to the game. Love is very involved, which is surely a point of emphasis for the team and he is delivering. We are getting anything we want on O.
Lowry looks a little anxious. Wonder why…
Ibaka looks totally out of sync
I like how they’re getting Love the ball tonight.. on the move so he doesn’t have to struggle to get into his spots
Kev not looking too bad so far.
Great ball fake Kev!
Hill looking spry on that drive!
There you go Kevin! (Hubie rubbing off)
Chewbacca with the airball…
Good sign that Bron is driving
I’d love to see just one decent shooting game from Love… sigh
Korea makes a great cut for a layup and Hubie’s initial reaction…mehhh…
Korver…not Korea lol
I think Hubie just called Ibaka “Chewbacca”
CUTZUS!
Kev… still no touch…
Too quick there JR…
Anyone know what radio station is broadcasting the game? I really don’t want to listen to Hubie…
Wonder if Bron got any rest…
Which is worse for calling a game – Hubie Brown or Players Only?
Both equally bad scenarios…
Players only less annoying, imo, and I think Players Only sucks.
Oh man… freaking Hubie
This person looks younger than Hubie !
Cavs can really put the screws to Raps with another win… but even if they don’t, still home court going forward…
Great, we get Hubie. Not.
Yes!!!! Living legend Hubie Brown!
Haha 2 comments immediately when his face shows. Love it!
Tuned in late…did I hear Paul Pierce pick the Raptors in the series? If so, I am shocked. SHOCKED.
He also picked Philly to go to the Finals…
The Truth. What a turd.
Hey, it’s Ty Lue’s birthday today…

May ya’ll have a happy day.
Fizdale just named Knicks HC… Nate will be sad
Thought for sure it’d be Mark Jackson. Guess he didn’t have the political push.
I like your defensive idea of putting Korver on Ibaka, since Ibaka isn’t really a post player. Which of course means we won’t do it.
good omen—tribe was down 5-0—-now up 7-5 !!!
And tied up. Yeesh, Indians bullpen is not great this year. Allen and Miller only two guys that can be relied upon. Goody reverting back to mean.
Francona and the Tribe front office have a pretty good record of rebuilding bullpens on the fly.
Yeah, but he doesn’t have Callaway anymore… :(
I think this one could go either way. I could see the Raptors coming out in full force, playing great, and the Cavs settling with winning 1 of 2 on the road to start the series and a blowout occurs, ala Indiana in Game 6. If we get off to a quick start or just keep things close at halftime, then I think we could see another battle and close game. If LeBron smells blood at half time, I think the entire team will rally and we could win Game 2. If we get behind early and don’t get close… Read more »
The smart money says the Cavs rest a bit in this one, but if I’m Lebron, I want to go all out and try to finish them. It will be very interesting to see the Cavs approach.
Heard Windhorst say on the Lowe Post that Korver shot more shots in game 1 than any single game in his last 11 seasons
