Playoff Live Thread: Cavs @ Celtics, Game 5 (#BestofThree)
2018-05-23I was tempted to make George Hill the poster child of this Live Thread… mainly because his number is “3” and because when he plays well, he brings out the best in the Cavs. However, since Mike covered G Hill’s effect on the Cavs in depth last week, I settled on a shot of the other crucially important matchup in this deadlocked Conference Finals. Kyle Korver is 16 years older than Jaylen Brown, but he’s been able to match the young Celtic’s energy and hustle over the last two games. Even though Brown wound up leading Boston in scoring (25 points) in Game 4, it took him an inefficient 23 shots to get there. Three of those were blocked by the craftily defensive Korver, who I always forget has good size at 6-7 (kind of like how Ty Lue forgets how old Kyle is).
Now that both teams have held serve at home, the series has effectively been shrunk to a “best of three” scenario… which you no doubt learned on Monday night when it was literally the most used quote by the President Genius Celtics hive mind in the post game pressers. Boston would presumably hold the advantage given that two of the three will be played in the always loud and annoying TD Garden… a place where they boast a 9-0 record in these playoffs. However, it’s never all that wise to bet against LeBron James winning at least one road game in a playoff series… in fact, outside of last year’s Finals, James has won a road playoff game in the other 32 previous series. He is unfortunately 0-3 on the road in Game 5s against the Celtics in his playoff career though, so he’ll look to change that tonight.
For the Cavs to put the first post season blemish on Boston’s home court record, their role players will have to exert even more of the hustle and intensity they put on display during the last two games in Cleveland. It will take more stifling defense, more teeth-rattling screens and more Kyle Korver blocks and floor burns. It will also probably take more threes from all of the Cavs’ gunners. They went just 8-23 from deep in Game 4, but still won by nine. A few more of those go in, and the game is likely not in doubt past the end of the third quarter. Korver went 2-5 from downtown and Brown wound up 2-6. Something tells me whoever can win that particular battle will make the difference tonight.
The rumblings are that President Stevens might switch things up in his starting contingency, and that he might go more defensive early with either Aaron Baynes or Marcus Smart (or both) to begin. Hard to say for sure, since Brad is keeping things close to the vest…
Brad Stevens says he doesn’t reveal lineups at media avail—as opposed to recent years, when he did—because he didn’t know he didn’t have to until before shortly before tip-off.

Ty Lue, on the other hand, will likely stay with what’s been working the last few games with Tristan Thompson in the starting lineup along with LeBron, Kevin Love, George Hill and JR Smith. We’ll see if any adjustments made by the President will force more tinkering by Ty.
Sticking to my non-predictions of playoff games, but I will say that I believe the Cavs will win once in Boston… either tonight or Game 7.
Catch all the action starting at 8:30pm EST on ESPN… and, as always, chime in below with your thoughts…
Just shoot that, Larry!
Nance is first sub. Down 6.
This game is ripe for the taking and Cavs are playing stupid.
TT that’s a freaking layup.
Two post ups by TT early is at least one too many
No more TT post ups, please, I don’t care if they have Heinsohn on him…
Stop posting up thompson. Cripes.
Horford hanging on Love on that rebound like a cheap suit…
2nd Bron TO.
James holding the ball way too long.
Good time to rest LeBron.
Yeah that’s not a foul… smh
Got to sub the Cavs defensive stopper KK in lol.
Our bench needs to step up. Korver, Green, Nance, + Clarkson need to outscore Morris & Smart by at least 10-15.
LBJ rightly got fouled…. but can’t just complain…. let to easy 3 make for Smart.
Yep. That is on Bron. Good TO from Ty.
Screw you, Hyundai…
Horford getting touch fouls. LeBron gets blatantly fouled no call. Stays to complain about it, gives up a three. 4-5 point swing. Gonna have to win this playing 5 on 8.
They are going to have the refs all game, no surprise there…Heinsohn spoke to refs earlier and asked them to “keep it fair, keep it fair”…
Need some Cedi energy for the D
League wants Game 7. Expect ticky-tac on us but not them.
I’m amazed when any Smart shot goes in… his form is terrible…
God, Smart sucks sucks sucks…except at home, when he just sucks…
Clearly a foul on that Bron drive… smh
President Stevens must be a genius to get anything out of Baynes…he absolutely sucked in Detroit…
That is what I’m talking about!
That’s the passing I’m talking about!
AND ONE!
Bron should be taking it right at Baynes on drives…
Cavs with three straight bad shots. Work the offense.
Too many jumpers
Too soft. Too many jumpers. Do not like it.
Bad transition D by the Cavs…
Horford getting two star calls on some BS…. SMH.
Anybody else have black bars on the side of their TV screen on the feed?
Yup…. didn’t notice until you said something.
Nope
Not me.
Another weak call
Rozier takes carrying the ball to a new level of conspicuousness
Love just seems to be getting all ticky tacky calls in this series… foul trouble every game… we need him in this game for sure… as other supporting cast seems to be hiding on offense….
LeBron news to stop turning the ball over.
James needs to stop lazy TOs… if he can just reduce his dumb TOs and hit more FTs… life would be a bit easier for the team
James just can’t make those turnovers. They are Steph Curry- like
JR is playing some lockdown defense there on Tatum.
LBJ stupid pass.
Wow. If you’re calling that on love you could call a foul on the Celtics every possession
Heinsohn said it was a great call…
In his slurred boozy Bahstahn brogue?
It’s all he has…
Whistle blew almost before it happened… such a homer call
Bad Bron pass after a great defensive possession. Drat!
Please watch the turnovers, Lebron…not worth it…
Yep. Singles not home runs.
KLOVE is aggressive!!! LOVE IT!!
Bad pass…
Nice pass kev.
Liking the inside movement…
8 quick ones for Love. 2/2 from deep. 3/4 overall.
That’s the danger of playing Baynes if Love can make them pay from outside…
Love having the range early is a nice sign…
Love red hot.
LOVE! Feeling it!
Big three by Kev!
Cs are gunning it from three tonight…
Brown on Bron.
Baynes with a block & Cs have 2 O boards early. One from Baynes.
Uncalled foul on Horford on that second Love possession…
Men in Black.
Bucket + board for Love.
Good aggressive bucket by Love…
LeBron may come out energized tonight after Houston’s win last night — sort of like at the trade deadline when he could see new possibilities.
Defensive effort is the key.
Play like a man tonight, Kevin.
Vardon had a piece up where he said Love tweaked the thumb & Green has a slight elbow issue.
Big time
Cs: Rozier, Brown, Tatum, Horford, Baynes.
Cavs: Hill, JR, LBJ, Love, TT.
Gonna have to pay attention to the defensive glass with Baynes in there. If Horford is outside & Love helps, we need that rotation/box out from JR, Bron, & Hill.
Morris gives them some scoring off the bench. Hopefully Bron attacks early & gets some fouls on Tatum/Brown.
Expect “Max Contract” Marcus Smart to show up at home. He’ll probbaly go 6-8 from three, with 5 epic flops.
To me it’s going to be key that the Cavs get to a good start or that they could at least match the intensity from the Celtics in the 1 st quarter. If the Celtics get a double digit lead right from the first quarter then their role players will probably begin to play with tons of confidence and for a young team that could be a huge advantage.
Let’s Go Cavs.
TV says, unofficially, Baynes to start.
As long as Ty keeps TT on Horford & puts Love on Baynes, we should be fine.

Almost a must win, imo.
For who?
Both.
Good answer…
It should, it’s the best out of three now.
