Live Thread: Cavs @ Thunder/ Update, Kyle Korver Traded To Utah
2018-11-28
The Cavs are away tonight to take on the Thunder. Cleveland played the Thunder tough last time battling back from a 16 point half-time deficit only to lose. OKC was without Russell Westbrook that night, and Dennis Schroeder torched the arena for 28 points.
This game Russ is back, but Cavs coach Tyronn Lue isn’t. How much that matters, I don’t know.
The Thunder are coming off a tough loss to the Nuggets after Russ went 1-12 from deep. He apparently stayed and practiced for two hours after that game. That was Saturday. I can only hope Russ practiced Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday as well. He’s currently shooting just 18% from 3-point land. That’s a shot the Cavs want him to take confidently because it will help ease Collin Sexton‘s defensive burden.
What To Watch
- Welcome to the League Sexton. After having two straight games with more than 20 points scored on above .500 shooting, the Minnesota Wolves threw a party for the Young Bull on Monday evening. They limited him to 11 on 5-19 shooting. They actively planned to stop him, and Sexton sputtered. Still, the rookie tossed four assists and grabbed seven boards. Sexton is making a tiny name for himself and teams will now include him in their game plans. He is going to need to look to do a little bit of everything early on this game to keep the Thunder guessing. If he can make a living without needing to score right away, his shot will open up later in the game.
- The Cavs need to limit turnovers. The Thunder will make them pay if they don’t. They are number one in the league with 21.7 points a night from miscues.
- Finally, the Cavs need to stop penetration and let the Thunder shoot themselves out of the game and thus in the foot. They are currently hitting 31.1% of their 3s and jacking up a middle of the pack 31.8 a night. It’s not wise to give up a bunch of 3s, but Larry Drew should trust the averages this game. It’s also never a good thing when Russ, Paul George, and Steven Adams are by the rack, that’s where they can do some damage.
- If Steven Adams were to have curly hair again, he’d look like a jacked Weird Al Yankovic, right? That question is the result of looking for a picture to go along with this thread and finding the above one. If the Thunder win, that observation sorta softens the blow.
The Cavs are making strides and I give that to them, but tonight might get rough. Westbrook seems quite angry after the Thunder’s loss to the Nuggets. Sexton may get the brunt of that anger. It’ll still be close though. Thunder win, 111-103.

No Kyrie… the reason you wear #11 is because #2 was retired in Boston…
Is Kyrie supposed to be wiser with his new hairdo?
Sloppy offense leads to worst defense. Ugh…
Cavs gotta throw some elbows on these punks.
Nance had an open shot, but double clutched the shot.
Nice tackle Russ…
My last five posts from the wrong thread.
Sexton’s mid ranger was truly pyrite.
Jesus. TT is jurassic around the bucket. Gotta go up quicker.
Argh. Gotta go under when Russ is at the three point line.
Nice reverses. Points gonna be hard to. Come by tonight.
Hood had the mismatch, should’ve gone off glass on that shot IMO.
Adams is like a 7′ TT…
GREAT DRIVE CEDI!!!! HESITATION TO GET AROUND THE CORNER!
Great change of pace by Cedi on that drive…
Clarkson v. Schroder should be fun… /s
Clarkson is going to have to be great tonight.
Nice finish…

TT is hot garbage so far tonight. Their TOs kept us in it for a while, but this is blowout city I fear.
Little early for that… OKC is a great offensive rebounding and interior defensive team…
Sexton’s shot not falling…. looks like PG13 is on him defensively…. that’s some respect.
Nice pass Nance, TT couldn’t finish strong.
Do you think OKC would want KLove?
I’m sure they would. Question is what would they give up.?
Or, what do they have that the Cavs would actually want?
TT has the weakest hands of any big man in the league
It’s not his hands that are the problem… it’s his gather before his jump…
IMO, he brings the ball down… allows it to be easily stripped.
Both. Small hands. Can’t jump off one foot. Slow gather. Always brings the ball down.
Feel like this is a game ZZ could be useful in…
Good call.
Agreed…. mirror some of his minutes to Adams?
TT blows another scoring chance.
Grant has 2 blocks
Just go up with it TT!
The TT as an all-star talk on the TV pregame needs to stop.
Depends if he continues his streak of double double play…
TT wide open, not strong with the ball, bad turnover.
Right after letting Russ have a layup.
OKC struggling with the TOs
CEDI THREE!!!! CONFIDENT!
La Flama Turk???

HOOD IN RHYTHM!!!
GREAT PLAY HOOD!!! Took the charge!!!
Nice D by Hood.
WHAT A FINISH SEXTON!!! GREAT DRIVE TOO! Nice pass Hood!
Nice charge take Rodney
Nice finish Bull
TT bad shot… couldn’t take advantage of strength mismatch.
Nice finish Young Bull!
OKC disrupting the Cavs’ sets thus far…
BONZI / BLOSSOMGAME HAVING GOOD GAMES TONIGHT
Bad shot Sexton, no pass, no rhythm.
Nice hesitation move, but Sexton should’ve anticipated the defensive rotation and lobbed it to Nance.
Need to bring Bonzi up.
LOL Grant…
This might be rough tonight with lack of bodies…
Thank you “La Flama Blanca”!!!
For old times sake…
Yep, sad to see Kyle go. And Kenny pics.
For the next 30+ days we are looking like this:
1) Guards: Sexton, Hill, Clarkson, Harrison
2) Wings: Nwaba, Hood, Burks
3) Forwards: Cedi, Dekker
4) Bigs: TT, LNJ, Zizic, Frye
Hurt: Love
Banished: JR
THAT BURK CONTRACT / AND HIS AGE / HOPEFULLY PLAY MAY BE MORE VALUABLE COME FEB THAN KORVER
Glad to have witnessed one of the greatest shooters of all time suit up for the Cavs. Truly a class act. Also happy for him that he’s going to a team with a lot of potential and he has a shot to make a deep playoff run.
YEAH JASON CAVS ARE REALLY SHORTHANDED TONIGHT —–RUMOR HAS IT THEY MIGHT SUIT UP LONGENBRUGER FOR HIS TENACIOUS DEFENSE —-HAD TO CALL A LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO GET A UNIFORM TO FIT HIM : )
Sad to see Korver go, but at least we got a couple of 2nd round picks.
GOING TO AGREE WITH NATE ON KORVER TRADE AND ALSO DOING THE RIGHT THING FOR KORVER —-SELL WHY HIS STOCK IS STILL RELATIVELY HIGH —-WHO KNOWS WHAT MAY HAVE TRANSPIRED BY FEB TRADE DEADLINE —NOT GOING TO FAULT KOLBY AT ALL ON THIS ONE
https://twitter.com/CavsTheTweets/status/1067941765297201153?s=19
I think that is selling low on Korver. Way too soon. Teams aren’t desperate enough yet. Damn Koby.
Disagree. Great deal. Could turn into another first with Burks’ expiring. Honestly, Burks might be a better move for Philly than Kyle if 6ers wanna go that route.
Good point. He is younger and on an expiring. More $$ for FA next year.
I think they were trying to do him a favor by honoring their promise to him. I think they could’ve gotten more, but I get it.
Part of it is that by doing this now, we can move Burks again before the deadline. If we had waited another 2 weeks, we would be stuck with the player.
Not saying flipping him is the plan, but it is an option. We can now do a deal for $30 million in salary and send back only $1 million in salary for next year (Hill + Burks). Another $15 mil + only $3.7 guaranteed if you throw JR in. That should be worth an asset back. Significant asset.
Plus, Hill & Burks can play a bit as well.
Only 9 guys in uniform. And a third of that is Harrison, Zizic, and Frye.
Looks like the Cavs have 4 baskets of players.
1. Core pieces: Love, Sexton, Nance, Cedi
2. Vets who won’t be around next year: JR, Hill, Frye.
3. Guys who can play some, but we have to decide if they are a part of things moving forward, or at what price: TT (probably yes, decide next year), Clarkson (only if improves, decide next year), Hood (UFA next year), Burks (UFA next year).
4. Guys we are hoping to develop into rotational level pieces: Nwaba (sold), Dekker (not sold), Zizic (not sold).
I guess put Harrison in that last group.
Zizic is a keeper IMO…. he’s only 21. I think there’s a good chance he becomes a nice backup C or spot start C against traditional bigs.

SEXTON WILL PROBABLY GET ABUSED BUT HOPEFULLY LEARN FROM THE “BRUISES “
MAN ADAMS IS JUST ONE / MEAN LOOKING “MF “
Glad the Cavs haven’t played the Jazz yet this year because we can still post some Kenny Powers pics then. I will miss them immensely.
Amen
Bummed to see him go, but glad he is going to a team that is competing for a playoff spot and will be a great fit for him and his family. Thanks for a great Cleveland run, Kyle! Good luck with the Jazz!
Amen, Nate.
There is a small contingent at slcdunk that is bummed about Burks going. They think injuries slowed his development & that he will do better away from Snyder (their coach) and playing at a faster pace/less ridgid system.
However, the Jazz are bottom 4 in 3PT shooting and Burks was only getting 15 minutes a game with shooting being his thing.
Interesting. I liked him in his younger days but his injury history has been brutal. I can see Quinn not trusting him just due to that.
He’s a bit of a playmaker as well… and athletic. He has moments where he looks legit, just don’t happen all that often.
MAYBE HOOD / BURK REUNITED WILL HELP EACH OTHER
THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK KYLE —-TRUE PROFESSIONAL !!!

Nice… makes me feel better about the trade. I think they could’ve gotten more but whatever.
Any details on the seconds?
See above:
The Jazz are sending a 2020 second-round pick and a 2021 second-round pick via the Wizards.
Gotcha.
2020 is the Jazz’s own pick. 2021 the Wiz’s. No protections that I can see.
Alec burks – please inform me of the usefulness of this player, if at all.
Never mind. Right-handed hood. In other words, useless player on expiring contract. Got it.
Decent 3PT shooter. Very good from the line. Does not do a ton else other than shoot. Decent athlete but not fantastic. Not terrible on D but not great.
Some familiarity with Hill & Hood from Utah. Best case is a rotational level guy. 9-12th man. Could start if the other starters are really strong. Not worth $11 million.
Below average player. -1.71 RPM this year -2.33 last year. Decent shooter, doesn’t do much else. Nice free throw shooter this year. Absolutely cannot stay healthy. Averaged 41 games per year over the last four years.
Sorta wish they held on to him until the deadline but if this was a “let’s make it right” trade, I’m glad they got two seconds out of it.
There is that element to it. He did right by us and deserved the same in return.
Cavs need to be gathering draft picks not giving them away. Straight trade Fultz for Korver, maybe you take that chance, but forget giving them a draft pick. Burke’s does look like a right handed Hood, but two picks are good. His contract is up in summer. A lot of flexibility with picks, cap space or resign him if he finds his game.
Yeah, the right-handed version of Hood.
Not gonna lie, way hoping for Fultz. But if Philly was a no, and reports said they turned down Kyle + a first, then this is a decent haul.
Burks is 27, makes $11 mil, and is a UFA after this year.
If Koby and Dan were dumb enough to actually put that offer on the table for Fultz, Philly will regret it and Elton Brand should be fired… If you were looking for a bigger bust than Anthony Bennett… look no further than Fultz.
Nonsense. Way too early to tell in any case. Fultz is athletic enough to play some even if his shot is broken. He is not Bennett level bust.
Agree about the part about the furst, however.
He cannot raise his arm above his head without it twitching.
He will be out of the league in another year… guaranteed
Couldn’t agree more, EG. If they really offered that package for Fultz, I’m frightened.
Amen.
WOW…. Korver to Utah for Burks and two 2nd round picks.
