The Randoms: Nurse-ing a Loss
2019-06-11It was a wild Game 6 in Toronto, Monday, and it saw a seemingly brutal injury to Kevin Durant. His calf
“popped” in his right lower leg. Bob Myers was crying after the game when delivering the news that “it’s an achilles injury,” and we all are fearing the worst. You have to respect Myers when he said the following.
This Bob Myers presser…wow. "If you have to, you can blame me."
— David Aldridge (@davidaldridgedc) June 11, 2019
I respect that attitude in an era when few want to take ownership of anything. Credit to the Warriors who overcame the injury and gutted out a win when down six with three minutes left.
Enabling that victory was Nick Nurse who took one of the worst timeouts in NBA history at the 3:05 when the the Warriors were absolutely reeling and the Raptors were on a 17-5 run and up six. Kawhi was unstoppable. And Nurse took not one, but two consecutive timeouts. It allowed the Raptors to regroup, change their defense, and get back in the game. After the game, the Canadian press all called attention to it, but were far too polite to grill Nick Nurse on a decision that cost Toronto the game and could well cost them the season. He was the opposite of Bob Myers tonight.
You absolutely cannot let a team as savvy as the Warriors off the mat. This was Atlanta in Super Bowl LI level bad.
Compounding this incompetence was a total mismanagement of the clock by the Raptors down the stretch. Down 1, after a very close basket interference call and then a moving screen call against Cousins, the Raptors had the ball with 15 seconds left. Instead of going for a quick score and then trusting their defense, they ran the clock down as if the game was tied. It made no sense, because if they’d missed, the Raptors could’ve still fouled with a chance to tie after two free throws. Here’s the play. Yikes.
Karmicly, the Raps fans might not have deserved to win this one after their team cheered as KD was limping off the court, but I enjoyed David Wood’s unique take on the events.
Also, not a single fan base wouldn’t have cheered or reacted like Toronto. People are dicks. Have less faith in humanity. #NBAFinals2019

I don’t 100% agree with him, but he does speak to the gladiatorial nature of sports. It can bring out the worst in people. Credit to the Toronto players who told their fans to cool it.
Also exiting the game: Kevon Looney who aggrivated his “right 1st costal cartilage non-displaced fracture injury.” He was another guy who was supposedly not at risk of further injuring himself by playing, but left the game after further injuring himself. Did Golden State borrow the Celtics’ training staff?
It was a weird game: nine turnovers in the first half for the Warriors, 15 in the game, and it could’ve easily been 20. In a make or miss league, it all came down to shooting, as the Warriors went 20-42 from three while the Raps went 8-32. KD’s 11 points in 12 minutes were crucial, and he lead both teams in plus/minus. Why? Because three shooters spacing the floor: one on the ball, and one on each side of the three point arc makes an offense so much harder to defend because defenses can commit to the overloaded side when there are just two great shooters. The Warriors’ lack of shooters with length when KD is out lets Toronto play their matchup zone with impunity.
Shooting is everything in the NBA now, and it’s why I want the Cavs to have a four or five-out capable offense at all times. It’s why Tristan Thompson needs to go somewhere else. It’s why I hope Larry Nance has locked himself in a gym and is working on his three ball all summer.
Also strange? Demarcus Cousins owning Serge Ibaka for four minutes in the first half and Quinn Cook owning Norman Powell in the second. The problem with Cousins is he is a very slow shooter, and he’s um, rubenesque and out of shape. He can only play 3-4 minutes at a time.
I’ve mentioned that I’m torn on this series, but I’ll admit. I didn’t want the Raptors to win tonight. I didn’t want it to be “too easy.” As this graph shows, it certainly wasn’t.
Amazing #NBAFinals game! Great shot-making by Kawhi, Steph, & Klay down the stretch. Some questionable plays by both teams in final moments, but can't ask for much more back-and-forth excitement than that! pic.twitter.com/lTSZkvKPMD

I also just wanted a little bit more basketball. But now I’m terrified of what Ten Thosman Maniacs noted in the comment section, “Good lord they’re going to take 3-1 away from us.” So here’s hoping Kawhi doesn’t let Lowry shoot down the stretch next game.
It’s insane how Steph and Klay good are shooting off the dribble. Klay had three defenders around him and just pulled up no hesitation for that 3
Best two shooters ever. Unfortunately…
That bank floater is siakam’s signature.
Ibaka trying to talk to Lowry in the break, Lowry defensive & angry.
The laughing woman iphone commercial may be the most annoying ad ever designed…
…and super cheapo call on Lowry for his 4th…I don’t even blame him there, that wasn’t a foul…
He got all wrist.
I’m not even sure he got his hand…should have been no foul call…
I know it’s his game, but Lowry needs to careful about being so handsy on defense…can’t afford him to get in bad foul trouble…
Looked like all ball there
Lowry playing out of his mind. I wanna take whatever he’s taking.
Amazing half…Raps should be up more considering the GS turnovers…but leading with Kawhi not doing much…
Dumb foul, Kawhi…
This is such a great game.
Yes it is.
Commentators already making excuses for the Dubs – “have no business being in this game” and “limited offensive team”.
They may not be the all-time hyper-efficient offense they are with Durant in the lineup, but I wouldn’t call any offense with Steph, Klay, and Draymond limited…
Yeah, they are missing a player they never should have had to begin with…cry me a river…
I hate the never ending excuses for GS.
Raps making stupid mistakes and taking some bad shots. Gotta give it to GS and their defense. Kawhi had been a non-factor so far.
I don’t understand the raps. Kawhi is barely touching the ball.
Also the double teams
Kawhi needs to handle the double teams better…they’re not going to stop doing it…
Warriors getting much better looks at the rim today – Klay and Steph’s off ball movement drawing a lot of attention
Raps red hot from three…nice to see Siakam hitting his corner threes…
Warriors lucky their turnovers aren’t hurting them yet.
wow.. lowry with 17 in Q1.. if i had to watch his sine wave performances every game i would shoot myself
Really think the Raps should line up Gasol’s minutes with Cousins as much as possible…hate the Boogie- Ibaka matchup…
Although fat, Boogie is still more mobile than Gasol
Yeah, but you wouldn’t see that Cousins bully ball in the post…he just shoves Ibaka out of his way…
GS with the extra motivation of playing for KD and final game at this arena. Gonna be tough to beat tonight.
Amazing bucket by Kawhi…
Looks like Lowry all out of bubblegum…
Awesome reference. One of my favorite b movies of all time.
Thank you Mike ;)
For Nate:

The stepien is so great
No excuse for the Raptors tonight. Dubs just can’t score enough
Picking raps by 12. 117-105.
I think Raps win, no score prediction. Doubt they shoot 25% from three while Dubs shoot over 50% from three like last game…may come down to how well Cousins plays…
Draft is so up in the air. My guesses:
5th: Me = Hunter; Cavs = Culver.
26th: Me: Kabengele (sp?), Cavs = Porter Jr.
I’m cool with taking a shot at a guy with Porter Jr’s talent and baggage all the way down at 26.
https://twitter.com/TJDhoops/status/1139213838950248448?s=19
That was great.
Putting the kiddos to sleep and making my way downstairs to the hotel bar here in Niagara Falls. The amount of Raps’ shirts/jerseys reminds me ’15-’16 Cleveland. Hopefully they close it out tonight.
who do we take @ #5 and #26.. gentlemen.. place your bets
Cam Reddish and Bol Bol. (or Tacko Fall if Bol is off the board)
i know my knowledge and expertise is a fraction of most of my bros on this page.. but contrary to popular tv opinion that this is a weak draft, after 3 (or 4 incl garland).. i actually see quite a few young folks who may turn out to be decent pros
does miami trade #13 (along with bad contract) for JR?
It would have to be a really, really bad contract…
ok.. who would trade #5 for ATL #8 & #10 ? and who would you take with those picks?
I would, but I don’t see why Atlanta would do that. Does trading up in the lottery happen very often? I know Atlanta last year but can’t think of any others. They ended up getting 5&10 for 3, which would be a great value if the 3 weren’t Doncic.
ATL not going to do that trade, but I would do it in a heartbeat. Maybe we can get Magic installed as Hawk’s GM before the draft? I would try to get Clarke and Doumbouya, probably.
If the Cavs trade down, the depressing reality is it makes them more likely to end up with Reddish.
Yup…. on board with this plan for Clarke and Sekou.
reddish being a slacking lollygagger?
IMO, KLOVE, Nance, and Sexton are untouchable… they’re the only ones who are going to be Cavs post-2020.
who would trade KLove for picks? and which ones?
secondarily.. do the cavs have anything that anyone wants? other than $$ for taking drek off of someone’s books?
and the JR contract..
Nance is a nice contract. But he is unlikely to be traded and shouldn’t be. We need some decent players on this team after all. Sexton is worth something. But again won’t and shouldn’t be traded. Cedi might fetch you a late late first like 25-30, but that isn’t worth it. So of the guys that likely could be traded, we won’t get anywhere near equal value in picks. Therefore not worth it on our end.
who might be interested in KLove (other than perhaps LAL)?
Not now. He’s not worth anything. Have to reestablish his value.

A lot of mocks lately seems to point to the Cavs taking Culver, which I think would be great. https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/nba-draft-2019-breaking-down-biggest-needs-potential-trades-and-best-prospect-fits-for-all-30-teams/ Here’s a scout’s take on Culver: “Like the Virginia kid [De’Andre Hunter], Culver played in a half-court system, lot of motion, and that kind of hid his potential a little bit, in my opinion. You put him in sets where he knows where the shots are coming from, he can be terrific. But he can be more instinctive when turned a little loose in an NBA system. He has more upside than downside, put it that way. He knows how… Read more »
Apparently Atlanta is high on Culver, so there’s some speculation that they could try and make a deal to move up in the draft. According to league sources, Atlanta has been angling to move up in the draft by packaging their various picks, and continue to explore possibilities there. Their primary target would seem to be Jarrett Culver, and they would likely have to get ahead of Phoenix to get him. After dealing with the Nets to add Allen Crabbe’s salary and acquire two first-round picks, Atlanta owns a league-high six selections in this draft, and is exploring all its… Read more »
Cavs need to trade down if they think clarke will be there. Culver is OK, but don’t see him as anything special. Lots of people I respect have Clarke as the No. 2 prospect in the draft.
Lots of talk of the Hawks trading to the Cavs, most likely 10 and 17 for 5. If they made it 8 and 17 I’d do it all day. Need to consider 10, 17 and a 2nd…
I also heard 8 & 10 for 5.
That would be a rip off. I doubt the Hawks entertain that.
I wouldn’t give up the pick for 8 and 17. It would have to be 8 and 10.
I would do it for 8 and 17. This is a draft where trading down makes sense. I expect the Hawks only do any trade up deal with the Cavs on draft night if Culver is sitting there at 5. Guess we’ll see how much the Cavs like him if that happens.
If I trusted the Cavs draft ability I would probably be more for it.
There’s some rumors that the Pelicans want Beal, and are looking to make a 3-team trade with the Wizards and Lakers, netting the Wizards the 4th pick in the draft.
All the trades I’ve seen involving Beal revolve around the Wizards taking garbage for Beal. The dude is more valuable than AD IMO: better contract, healthier, better attitude, and a more relevant position.
Also, if do 5 for 8 and 17, or 5 and 25 for 8 and 10. I’d do 0 and 17 if I was sure clarke was gonna be there.
Here’s the hat the Cavalier’s draft pick will be wearing: https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/06/heres-the-hat-the-cavaliers-draft-picks-will-be-wearing-whoever-they-are.html
Bringing on Price as a shooting coach who can also teach PGs (Sexton, Clarkson, Knight) how to run P&R would be fantastic.
WOULD SIGN PRICE IN A HEARTBEAT—SHOOTING / PT GD COACH !!——HE NEEDS / DESERVES TO BE BACK ON A CAVALIERS BENCH
Absolutely agree
Signing Price would make me scream in joy.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!
https://twitter.com/msinger/status/1138868231874252801?s=20
Sign him up!
If we draft a non-shooter or couple non-shooters would be nice to have Price around to help with player dev.
Price = the guy Kerr copied when devising a strategy for GSW.
And I like Price a lot more than Kerr.
So does Kyrie stay in Boston for a year and push for an AD trade? Thoughts?
No idea. He is a wildcard. He might go out to LAL. No idea.
Impossible to say what dude will do. I think he’s most likely checked out of Boston, though.
With KI signing with Jay-Z affiliated agency ROC Nation, I’d say the chances he sign with the Nets escalated quite a bit. I assumed he was signing there anyway.
GS announced Durant underwent surgery for ruptured Achilles today.
So much for a partial tear.
A rupture does not mean a complete tear. They are being coy.
As long as Ingram ends up anywhere but Cavs…

I’m fine with the Cavs taking on players for picks, but that’s about all.

Cleveland Cavaliers SG Jarrett Culver, Texas Tech, 6-6, 195 Jarrett Culver is a streaky shooter from behind the arc but his shot mechanics are there. Not sure where they are getting some of the things they say about these prospects, but some of them are downright odd. Garland being a “true floor general and passer” for a guy who was a scoring pg who had some trouble with pg polish. Same with the “shot mechanics” for Culver. I would say Culver has some touch but really really needs to work on his mechanics more than anything. Calling Hachimura a good defender seems odd. Granted his issues probably stem more off ball/team d than anything. Not bringing up Clarke’s defense as his primary attribute is weird.… Read more »
Hachimura is NOT a good defender now. That is clear. I see people wishcasting that he’ll be good on some sunshiney day in the future…that is the purest wishcasting, though.

Did they interview Hammond?
Should Hammond be interviewed before any female coach is hired?
Depends on the coaching position. We aren’t getting her away from SA for an assistant job. So no point there. If it was HC she probably would be one of the most qualified women to step into that role, so yes if you were thinking of hiring an HC and were also looking at women as candidates then she probably needs to be interviewed based on her NBA bench experience. I don’t know if she interviewed for any HC job this offseason though.
Apparently it was Koby who targeted her, and Beilein was very impressed when he talked to her. Still not clear to me if Beilein knew her before this. One thing Gottlieb brings is 8 years as a head coach. That’s not nothing. Really curious what her niche will be as an NBA assistant, though.
We’ll find out soon enough probably. As long as Beilein is on board with his assistants, that’s all I care about.
I don’t think she got interviews from any team, and she might not even been interested or thought she was ready yet. Dunno if it was on the teams’ part or hers. She went for the Bucks last year, but I don’t see anything this year. Bucks were a very nice situation last year compared to most of the ones this year. LA is a nightmare for a first time coach. Suns and Cavs are struggle city. Just as likely to get fired before contending from us and them as actually making through the rebuild. And I fully expect Beilein… Read more »
Weird. Wonder if Beilein was familiar with her from years past? It’s not clear from the article. I’m all for more women coaches in the NBA, just wondering what Gottlieb in particular brings to an NBA staff.

My biggest issue are guys on the ESPN and FS talking about diagnoses and prognoses saying oh I knew this and I knew that. This means this and this means that. Every athlete is different. No guarantee he comes back anywhere near what he was. No guarantee he isn’t crazy productive. Dominique is the closest guy to his age and skill/talent to have had the injury and he came back and averaged like 28 ppg over the next two seasons back on 45% and 7 boards. We don’t even know what Boogie will be like in a year. He might… Read more »
HELL NO !!!!!!!
Barf…In case you missed it, a FanSided post outlines how the Cavs can help the Los Angeles Lakers. In it, the Cavs give Kevin Love to the Pelicans. In return, Cleveland receives Brandon Ingram, Moritz Wagner and Solomon Hill. Davis, of course, heads to Los Angeles. New Orleans also receives Lonzo Ball, the Lakers’ No. 4 pick and their unprotected 2020 first-round pick:
https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2019/06/nba-draft-2019-rumors-news-grizzlies-considering-rj-barrett-knicks-still-want-kevin-durant.html
Only way I would even consider this, is if the Lakers give the Cavs their fourth overall pick, in addition to the garbage that they are sending in this package.
Fansided is moronic. Love for Ingram & Wagner (laughable) + we eat Hill’s contract for nothing. Absurd.
We are not trading Love. And the Lakers are not trading Ingram to anyone but NO. Ball is the one who goes to a 3rd team, as he is opposed to NO.
No doubt. I wouldn’t want Ball either.
I hope there is no circumstance where Ingram comes to the Cavs. He sucks, and will be making obscene money (for his contributions) soon. Hell, I’d rather have Wagner, and I don’t love him at all.
In any case, that trade looks like garbage. I don’t even see why Griffin would want that.
Love will not be traded this summer. It is annoying how some speculating writers just can’t accept that.
The one part of that presser that I found dusingenuous was Myers saying that it was a different injury.
True but misleading. My understanding is that one of the risks associated with playing with a calf strain is an Achilles tear.
As with anything, there are no absolutes in medicine. With any medical recommendation, there’s a risk that your advice is wrong or that even despite your best knowledge, experience and intentions, bad outcomes can occur. Doctors are people, too. I’m sure there is bias and tremendous organizational pressure to try to get the superstar athlete back to try to win a championship that doctors are subjected to. Ultimately the organization has to be responsible for deciding whether the risks are worth the benefits. If the Warriors were up 3-1, would Durant have played Game 5? Unlikely. There was a collective… Read more »
Who knows? Given the context, I wouldn’t find it surprising if any team in that situation pushed for the same. Doesn’t excuse it. Unless we hear about negligence, hard to say. The MD said there would be an increased risk, however tangential, to other parts of the lower leg system. But it does seem problematic. Maybe Kawhi was right in adamantly holding out.
I’m sure Durant went into it with open eyes. He probably didn’t go by just team doctor advice. He wanted to play and felt like he could play. He knew there was a risk — even Kerr mentioned the possibility of risk before the game.
From the available information, not sure there is anyone to ‘blame’. You roll the dice sometimes.
I have to agree. I do dislike Durant though that doesn’t mean I’d wish this injury on him. However, I have a lot of trouble believing he was “forced” to play and never had an opportunity to get a second opinion if he distrusted the team doctor. Players make their own health decisions all the time. Kyrie supposedly threatened knee surgery to reinforce his trade demand. Mo Williams went to like 3 or 4 doctors before he found one to recommend surgery that made him unusable while getting paid and taking up a Cavs roster spot with questionable disclosure to… Read more »
And btw the link (bball breakdown on YouTube) I have posted hasn’t passed thru moderation, but there is a very good chance the injury is only a partial tear based on analysis by a sports MD of the video evidence.
Interesting analysis by an MD on bball breakdown on what happened and what the full scope of KD’s injury actually might be. One thing that is somewhat heartening is a clip showing KD flexing his foot downward after he sits on the court. MD said that the pointing of the toes downward (plantar flexion) would be nearly impossible with a fully ruptured achilles tendon. So nothing for sure obviously until MRI results come to light, but it is possible it is just a partial tear.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVniOBXOQ-g&app=desktop
I’ve been an athletic trainer for 30+ years. The idea that he would have a calf strain a month ago then have an unrelated rupture of his achilles is incredibly hard to believe. We all know what happened. He likely had a micro tear of the tendon. NBA players are commodities, they’re bought, traded and sold. They’re used to their maximum value to the franchise and nothing else. Doctors and trainers are members of the organization, they’re not in the employ of the players. The pressure from our win now, win at all cost, get it out, sacrifice for the… Read more »
I don’t disagree with any of that, but the doc did say that a strain could conceivably cause more risk for an injury that wasn’t part of the initial injury in that biomechanical chain. Still mostly posted because the diagnosis may not be as utterly devastating as a full rupture. Likely got pushed. Don’t really buy the Myers tears.
Pretty well said… the fault lies with Bob Myers IMO…. he’s the guy everyone reports to. Agree with John B… big time crocodile tears…. my girlfriend said the same thing just watching his presser…she knows nothing about the NBA. I’d add, where’s the players’ union in this? Why aren’t they protecting KD’s interests? Also, I’ve heard from a couple of GSW fans that this isn’t the first incident with GSW’s medical staff. Apparently there was an issue with Klay bleeding out of his ear and probably concussed, but still playing. And there was another issue where Steph Curry’s mom went… Read more »
I hate to be cynical, but I was thinking crocodile tears, too, just listening to him.
On a different note, there are rumors all over the place here in Europe that Ettore Messina will be the new head coach/gm of Italian team Armani Milan. The team was terrible this year both in the Euroleague and the domestic league, the coach got fired and the team made a great offer to Messina that he supposedly accepted.
Wasn’t he one of the most coveted assistant coaches in the mix for every head coaching job in the NBA? Weird that he is coming back to Europe without trying his chops at the NBA first.
I think people assumed he was coveted because of his pedigree. But who knows what teams really thought?
That’s true. Still seems odd though.
Cleveland Cavaliers held private workout, had dinner with Jarrett Culver on Monday, sources say:
https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2019/06/cleveland-cavaliers-held-private-workout-had-dinner-with-jarrett-culver-on-monday-sources-say.html
Culver, Hunter, and Sekou look like the possible picks… I can live with that. Interesting tidbit about Garland, looks like he’s going to LAL.
If I were the Lakers, and was planning on keeping the pick (which they probably aren’t), I’d take Clarke.
They need shooting more than anything though.
Yeah, but he’d be the most ‘win now’ rookie they could get. He’d be a great 2nd team big if the rest of their roster wasn’t a total mess. But I’m all but positive they’re trading the pick anyway.
What about Hunter? Seems about pretty win now and would fit well with James.
He’s probably be the other guy for me, but a distant 2nd. If they were planning on keeping the pick.
I’d love if they can flip JR for that Miami pick.
Or New Orleans with the 4th. NO needs a PG. LA needs shooting. Makes some sense. Hunter makes the most sense if LA keeps it. He is a functional NBA player on defense now.
Fedor has the Cavs taking Hunter (#5) and Bazley (#26) in his recent mock draft:
https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2019/06/nba-mock-draft-2019-chris-fedor-20-projects-new-cavs-picks-video.html
Here issome info on Bazley, who is projected as a 2nd round pick in CBS’s mock draft:
Per CBS: Bazley’s a 6-9 stick figure, but the combination of size, skill and athleticism make him an intriguing mid-second round selection. The Hawks can be patient with him and think long-term potential. He turns 19-years-old on June 12.
Get as many picks as you can, its all a crap shoot anyway. Would be fun to have a bunch of “potential” for summer league and regular season.
Let’s say KD signs his one year contract and sits all year – as expected. And say he decides to test the market when he comes back (Season ’20-’21). Who here would like for the Cavs to offer him a maximum contract?
I would. He wouldn’t come here, but hey can’t hurt to offer.
No respect for him as a player, no thanks. Doesn’t represent Cleveland values.
I don’t know what Cleveland values are because there isn’t such a thing. All Clevelanders would presumably need to share those values. That seems like fantasy tribalism to me. We’ve had a bunch of bigger knuckleheads here before. Some who helped win us a chip. Everyone loved them at the time. I’d like to win again. Don’t really care how we get it done. Draft seems only real practical way for small markets to succeed either thru drafting good pieces or accumulating assets and trading them for stars. If FA was a viable option I would take advantage of it.… Read more »
FACTS JohnB
Not facts
Of course I would have liked to have him in 2016. He was still on OKC, great player to watch. Hadn’t joined a 73-win team to get a free ring. The reason our championship is so precious is because it was hard to get. It took real work by real men, and a city hungry for greatness. Greatest championship of all time as far as I am concerned. He took the easy road, I’d hope a great midwestern city like Cleveland wouldn’t want empty championships. Sports are tribalistic in nature. Hopefully we can have a team that represents some of… Read more »
That championship still would have meant a ton because of the context. For once Cleveland might have a dynasty if somehow the cavs had the cap to sign Durant. Looking back I was pissed at Durant for signing with the warriors. In hindsight it was simple jealously on my part. GS had the cap situation and I can’t necessarily blame Durant for going to win an easy ship when Bosh and James took the easy road to start what we all thought would be a transcendent dynasty resulting in easy ships. I am over the hard road. I and everyone… Read more »
JohnB I totally get your inner conflict of fandom vs discomfort with tribalism. I wouldn’t want him for the 4 year Max. Pay him 45 million or whatever his Max will be at age 36 after an Achilles? No thanks. This is the kind of contract that hampers a team for years. Also I despise him for ruining the last good years of Lebron’s Cleveland career. But basically it wouldn’t be a smart contact. Seems like a Knicks move.
I expect it’s moot because I would guess he resigns a Max with GS.
You think GS will do it now?
That’s a troubling contract, specially more if they plan on keeping Curry, Klay and Green together.
Yes. Their window may already be closed without him based on what they have looked like without him against the length and raptors’s d. Now Curry, Klay and Green will take about 86 mil next year. The rest of their signed guys (unless Iggy and Livingston retire which is possible) will be around 28 mil equaling 114.5ish total. About 5 million over projected cap without KD. If iggy and Livingston retire we’re talking about 4 million plus 86. 90 million. Not enough for a max, but enough for another decent piece (about 10 mil short of a max) or a… Read more »
Saw on the rumor mill that NO wants to get an AD trade done soon, and that 3 teams could be involved. Wonder if we can get in as a 3rd team absorbing salary (JR deal) for picks.
The Raps let up after KD got hurt (down 4 to double digits) and again up 6 late.
I think they still win this, but could get tight.
Good piece Nate. Agree 100% on down 1 with the ball. Have to go early to allow foul game/3 or an o board if you miss.
Two minor edits: Game 5 not Game 6. Warriors not Raps regroup.
Hopefully Raps got the chokes out of their system in game 5 and will be able to close out in the next 2 and not let the Warriors pull a Cavs and come back from 3-1.
Also, and this is an unpopular opinion, but I don’t care about KD or wish him well. My main concern is that the Warriors will now keep him and continue to ruin basketball with their all-nba team.
Go Raps!!
Wait, you don’t wish someone you have no personal connection to “Well” after suffering an injury that could derail his career? Wow.
Other players can do as Curry, Klay and KD have done and take less money. Didn’t Lebron, Wade and Bosh did it in Miami? Not that I’m condoning it just saying…
Warriors guys didn’t take less money. I believe they outright signed him to a Max. Literally a product of the cap spike that one year because of the new TV deal and the players union wanting no cap smoothing. Blame LBJ and CP3 and the players union. Ironic. Miami guys did take less money. SA guys took less. But don’t blame the warriors for brilliantly constructing their team organically and taking advantage of the spike for the only major piece they didn’t draft or pick up after most teams had no interest. Miami was a contrived abomination of FA. Warriors… Read more »
Never mind neither were signed to maxes. Curry was on his old contract which was cheap due to concerns about his ankles and long term health (lucky for warriors). KD took a little less than the max I believe. Thompson signed for a reasonable contract in 2015. Guess most teams weren’t willing to offer him a max? GS had his bird rights so they would have needed to match.
Needed to match if he wanted to walk.
And check that again. God the cap increases have really messed with figuring out what actually was a max before the cap spike. Thompson’s actually was a max at the time. Crazy that 18 mil a year was a max rookie extension not all that long ago.
RJ on ESPN. Such a smart guy 👍
Toronto celebrated 3 minutes too soon. Sucks but they did it to themselves.
I haven’t watched the game yet because I was at hotel with lousy internet. Really sad about the Durant injury. I don’t like him at all, especially after going to the Dubs but it’s bad for the whole league. Another side effect of the injury that I haven’t seen mentioned is the end of the 1+1 contract to maximize the next big contract like Lebron routinely did and Durant followed suit. I guess this injury, which might be career threatening, will make players take the years and money in front of them rather than risk an injury like this. Also,… Read more »
Hindsight 20/20 and all.
Question is, are teams going to offer a 5-6yr MAX contract for KD now?
It is going to be difficult to offer the max to a 31 year old coming off an Achilles injury. He might miss all of next season. He might never be the same again, though obviously he will remain valuable thanks to his shooting and height.
I dunno. He is 31 so unlikely he tanks like Kobe. Also he is arguably the best player I’m the world. I think the risk is well worth it.
I am not saying some team or teams are not going to offer the max. I am saying that I would feel uncomfortable doing it. Whatever the case it’s a shame.
He may not tank like Kobe but history tells us that it is highly unlikely that he even reaches the level he currently plays at. I can’t remember an athlete who suffered an Achilles tear getting back to their pre-injury state.

A hypothetical trade that would be agreeable to New Orleans, New York and Cleveland would have the Knicks securing Davis, the Cavaliers obtaining the No. 3 (Barrett) and Frank Ntilikina and the Pelicans receiving Kevin Love, Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson, Dennis Smith Jr., the No.5 pick from Cleveland, as well as Dallas’s 2021 and 2023 first-rounders from New York.
Sucks for Kevin but I would.
I’m not that high on Barrett. At least not high enough to give up Love just to move up 2 spots.
Why does every national writer think the Cavs are eager to get off of the Love contract?
They may not be eager, but I also can’t see Kev being a Cavs lifer…
Price is too steep. Ntilikina is bustola so worthless. Barrett not worth it alone.
If Cavs take that deal as-is, won’t be a Cavs fan any longer. That is horrible.
That writer on Forbes is clueless. He’s put out a swarm of nonsensical articles about Cavs trades tgat would NEVER happen. His bio says he’s a lifelong Cavs fan or something but he constantly screws up details that even a casual fan would be embarrassed by. I have no idea why Forbes would even hire a guy to write so much about the Cavs, but why they would hire such a hack astounds me. Read his other recent articles and they’ll make your head hurt. Ps. Didn’t the Cavs recently formally state they have absolutely no plans to trade Love… Read more »
NBA Draft 2019: 7 teams the Cleveland Cavaliers could make a trade with on draft night: https://expo.cleveland.com/sports/g66l-2019/06/5b72f1bce58835/nba-draft-2019-7-teams-the-cleveland-cavaliers-could-make-a-trade-with-on-draft-night.html
POSTED ON THE OTHER BLOG——–RAPTORS FANS DESERVED TO LOSE LAST NIGHT ———-WATCH OUT FOR THE DREADED —“KARMA “——AND YES THE K.D. INJURY CHANGES ALOT ON THIS YEARS FREE AGENCY AND HOW JNURIES / PLAYERS COMING BACK FROM INJURIES ARE TREATED ————BOB MYERS WAS SINCERE / GENUINE IN HIS POST GAME INTERVIERW —–BEST OF LUCK / RECOVERY TO K.D.
I have no stats to back this up, but I’ve noticed that often when a key player is injured during a game, the teammates step up and play well, and the other team loses a little steam because they don’t feel as worthy of an easy victory. That never lasts past the game, though. Look for the Raptors to push hard for the title.
That said, Kawhi better get used to Klay Thompson guarding him down the stretch.
The KD injury will likely have a major effect on the league, both as a cautionary tale for coming back too soon from injury, and also as a huge domino in the free agent / trade market that now won’t fall.
Hopefully people will stop calling the Warriors the best organization in basketball after this colossal mistake.
Kudos to Bob Myers for taking responsibility.
If the doctors cleared KD, how’s it the organization’s fault?
The organization hires the doctors. Aren’t they supposed to be “the best doctors”? The dude blew out his achilles after ONE QUARTER of real-life play on a completely routine spin dribble. How they hell can you call that “cleared”? I don’t see how you can call that anything but gross negligence or incompetence.
Not necessarily. Many times, organizations partner with large health systems and doctors with the system are selected. Doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with their quality, but just by virtue of their position may they be selected.
Case in point, Dr. James Andrews is one of the most prolific and well known orthopedic surgeons and listed as one of the team doctors for the TB Rays and Washington Redskins – however, he has treated high profile athletes from many other teams looking for the “best”
The timeout with around three minutes left was called because Kawhi had just gone on a solo 12 point run and he was gassed. One can argue that it helped GS, but all the Raps had to do was get a couple of buckets, which they were unable to do. Really need to get a better look than that last shot, which was tipped by Bray. Someone needed to drive to the hoop, come what may. Was Siakam even in the game? Easy to second guess, and I’m sure the hot takes today will be scorching, but Durant probably should… Read more »
Yes, needed a drive, and well before it got to Lowry. From what I remember, there wasn’t time on the clock fort Lowry to drive, saw some criticism of him online but I’m a bit confused as to why. Regarding the timeout – this kind of thing you are damned if you do, damned if you don’t I guess. They don’t take the timeout and Leonard can’t keep pace, Nurse looks stupid. I think the bottom line is that (as much as we all hate to admit it) the Warriors have been making teams and coaches look stupid for quite… Read more »
Lowry and Leonard looked confused right before the timeout, but good Lord if you’re Nurse just call or signal a set.
It was the equivalent of if Francona had summoned the rain in Game 7 against the Cubs.
