2019 Draft Podcap: Taking Swings, Dodging Bols
2019-06-21Whew. That was a close one. We almost lost EvilGenius who pledged to ghost this team if they ended up with Bol Bol. Fortunately for us, the Cavs passed. In a night full of wild pitches, Bol ended up lasting until the 44th pick, when the Nuggets traded with the Heat to grab the oddly proportioned human. After the 26th pick, the Cavs followed up their selection of Darius Garland at No. 5 by selecting Dylan Windler of Belmont. As the pod kicked off, Cleveland surprised us all by trading back into the first round and grabbing Kevin Porter Jr. from USC, who’d been rumored to the Cavs as early as the late lottery.
Nate Smith, Evil Genius, Eli Kim, and Tom Pestak all squeezed into the podcast to take our cuts. We broke down the pros and cons of Darius Garland, the surprise of J.R. Smith staying put on draft night, and the Cavs’ and the NBA’s focus on shooting. Then we picked the biggest winners and losers of draft night. Winners included Atlanta, Memphis, Cam Johnson, and definitely New Orleans. Losers threw a included Boston, Phoenix, and Jay Bilas’ draft board. We wrapped it all up with some talk of NBA free agency, a tour San Diego’s finest eateries, and tales of Tom Pestak’s little league savants and whether or not they need to hire an agent.

Knight won’t be a problem. He hasn’t played two of the last three years. He knows he’s forked.
Did I miss something? That EG would leave us if we somehow ended up with Bol-squared?
He was ghosting the Cavs if they were to take Bol.
FWIW, here is the state of our draft picks, poat draft. 2020: Either one first or nada. Our 1st: To NO (prot 1-10, turns into 2nds if stays) Our 2nd = Gone. To Hornets. 2021: Either 1 1st/1 2nd or just 1 1st. Our 1st = Ours. Our 2nd: Ours UNLESS we keep our 2020 1st, then NO 2022: Likely 2 1sts and 2 or 3 2nds Our 1st = Ours. MIL 1st (Prot 1-10 & if Mil ’20 1st to PHX (prot 1-7)). Our 2nd: Ours unless we keep our 2020 1st, then NO. Wash 2nd Hou 2nd 2023… Read more »
I fully expect there will be at least one more first next year and a few seconds for the years to come from the returns from our expiring deals that will likely be dealt this season.
What does ‘are chalk’ mean?
As they would be normally or on paper I believe.
Trade down what idiots.
Do we know if YB is playing SL this year?
So far summer league roster:
G: Booth (SL)
G: Porter (30th)
F: Windler (26th)
F: Wade (2 way)
C: Bolden (??)
—————–
Usually 8-10 on rosters, yes?
Anyone non-drafted the community might like to see? Lawson out of Kansas? Ponds of St. Johns? Tacko Fall?
I really want Garland and Sexton to play together in summer league. I think it is necessary and will be a mistake if it doesn’t happen. Developmental jumpstart could turn into a developmental setback if they don’t get pt together before the season.
But I haven’t heard about whether Sexton will play. He definitely could use the experience because he still has a long ways to go to becoming a plus nba player.
I’d like to see Fletcher Magee, playing on Bucks SL team, and I think Tacko is playing on the Celtic SL team…
I commented last night that the suit Garland was wearing looked like something a TV Evangelist preacher on a religious network would wear. Which makes sense because apparently the suit was from the “Fear of God” collection of suits.

For gits and shiggles, shooting %s for our 10 returning players, 3 rooks, and Nwaba + Sauce last year:
FG%: Zizic 55.3, Windler 54.0, Garland 53.7, TT 52.9, Nance 52.0, Nwaba 48.1, Porter 47.1, Henson 46.3, Clarkson 44.8, Sexton 43.0, Osman 42.7, Delly 41.3, Knight 41.3, Love 38.5, Stauskas 36.7.

Compated to offensive rating: 11/16 made the POs. The entire top 10 did. But Charlotte (11), Minny (12), NO (13), Wash (14), and Sac (16) did not.
PO teams outside top 16: OKC (17), Indy (18), Nets (19), Pistons (21), Magic (22).
Good D tracked better with POs than good O.
Doubt they’re trying to make the playoffs. Otherwise they would have taken a more ready guy at 5. Expect they would prefer to keep their pick next year. Which they likely will. Honestly, I don’t dislike that. Not a big fan of missing out on our pick and thus the lottery to make the 8th seed in order to get swept.
Agreed on retaining that pick as a priority.
I can see the logic in trying to fix the O first. Be entertaining & fun to watch. Teach the system. Develop the young guys. Improve some. But be a fun place to play. Roll the lotto dice again.
See which expirings express interest in staying and those who don’t. Adjust trade, asset accumulation, & FA strategies accordingly. We could have a ton of cap space or not much.

There is no doubt he can shoot.
Garland, Cam Johnson, Jerome, Windler, & Herro are probably the top 5 shooters last year. We got two of them. Plus the kid from Wofford.
Yeah, his shot is wetttttttttttttttttttttt…but he looks pretty accomplished all around offensively on the clips I watched…
He was the pick I liked best last night.
Not that I think he will be the best player of the three, but in terms of fit/need with the team, value for where he was picked, etc.
Yeah, I kind of love this pick…
https://twitter.com/MZavagno11/status/1142155215845711872
So agreed. Fastest Ive gone from “who the hell is this” to “f yeah!”. Might not be the best player, but i think he was the best pick for his spot.
Good pod guys. One thing I have to disagree with, was that someone said defense does not matter, all that matters is shooting. That is total BS.
Of the top 16 defenses in the league, 13 made the POs. The exceptions were Miami (39 wins), Memphis (33) and the Lakers (37). Those 3 all had injury/issues that set them back (Dragic, JJJ, Gasol trade, LBJ, Ball, etc). Hou (18), SA (19), and LAC (21) were the outliers. Bucks 1st. Raps 5th.

It is very odd to say Garland was the best available talent at 5 when he has played 5 college games right?
It’s very odd considering both Bol Bol and Cam Reddish were still available at that point…
Hahahahahahahahahahhahaha
He’d be a good fit on the Bucks…frankly, this is the kind of player the Thunder should try to grab…

For all those guru’s questioning if Windler can play vs better athletes, didn’t he have 35 with 7 triples vs Maryland in the tourney?
I know the second game was off, but he won’t be the #1 option here.
Oops. Maryland WAS the second game. He had only 5 pts (and 14 boards) in a first four win vs Temple.
The Stepien had an article on the best mid major players last summer where the writer projected Windler as a legit first round talent. He even is pretty high on him defensively, which is encouraging. The article is here:
https://www.thestepien.com/2018/07/29/10-mid-major-prospects-watch-2019/
Im happy about the Joe Ingles comparisons Ive read. I’d be thrilled if he was a young Joe Ingles clone…and I believe most think he’s more athletic.
Again, we are light on wing length. And like last year we may cycle through guys getting traded (expirings) & taking back bad $$ to get assets. And we may play some guys early to try and build value. I think Knight deserves a look to see what he can do further along in his recovery. And Clarkson a last look to see if the D & tunnell vision ever get better. Do not want to lose Delly at all. Excellent 3PG who can mentor YB, Garland, & JC on pick & roll O & D. Unless deal is a… Read more »
We have too many guards. The guys we just drafted will minimally need some bench pt this season 10-15 mpg. There aren’t enough minutes for all these pg and combo guards if we retain Nwaba. Knight and Clarkson are expirings, not good players for our team, and need to be shipped asap. Besides which I am not holding my breath on Clarkson. He is what he is. Knight just doesn’t have a place here. You have to try to get wings in return for those expirings. JR and TT probably should go sooner rather than later. Obviously all these guys… Read more »
And the reason I say asap is because two guys like Clarkson and Knight are probably not going to like having no minutes in contract years. That could cause lockerroom issues.
Agree it could be tricky.
First thing will be how far along the rookies are. How raw is Porter? Can Windler defend? Can Garland? If we bring them along slowly, more PT for expirings early. Do not think Knight will be a problem.
Windler is a F. Skinnier than Cedi. Both will struggle at the four, but could see it some with 3 guards if the other team goes small.
Nwaba, Porter, & maybe even Delly/Clarkson/Sauce can guard some 3s who lack a post game. Think we will see 3 guard lineups some.
They will have to have three guard lineups a fair amount. No way around it. And Cedi does need to put on some muscle at some point. Surprised he didn’t last year. Porter is raw as far as team ball concepts and decision making. Garland is raw in the same way. Why I think Garland shouldn’t start at least to begin and that Porter Jr should get just 10-15 off the bench. Windler will be fine on d at the two or three I think. He probably needs to play 20+ minutes a game as one of our few true… Read more »
Cedi did put on muscle. Just needs more
Remember, until the Cavs he’s always been a tall combo guard.
As for the roster, I would go like this:
Start: Sexton, Garland, Cedi, Love, TT.
2nd: Delly, Clarkson, Windler, LNJ, Henson.
3rd: Knight, JR/Sauce, Porter, Nwaba, Zizic.
Now, bringing the rooks along slowly could be a thing. And we may want to play some of the expirings to build some value.
Not convinced on durability for Love/LNJ to start at C, so would hold TT for a while, minimum. I want to look at Henson some as well, shot 35.5% from deep for the Bucks pre-injury. If that is real, he gives us a spread 5 shot blocker.
… But reportedly wants a trade.
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1142111746485891073?s=19
Pretty darn close to the #1 dude I would never want on my team…Riley should have let him walk when he had the chance…
Posted a pretty good scouting vid on Garland ‘awaiting moderation’, for whatever reason.
Pretty good vid on Garland, pointing out strengths and weaknesses. I expect a lot of highlight jumpers and a ton of terrible passes and turnovers in traffic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hk6BwXBFcE
Yep I watched all of Scmitz’s video breakdowns. Gotta a ways to go before being able to run a team or do much besides scoring. Sexton and Delly need to be running the show as primary handlers, with the hope Sexton takes a major leap in offensive bball iq, vision, and passing.
If we cut JR, I believe we are under the tax by a bit. Could keep Nwaba +1 & maybe still be under.
Would open up a roster spot & let us keep Stauskas. Who, for all his faults, did hit 42.9% from deep for us last year, after a rough start. He knows Beilein’s syatem and would be a big Beilein backer in the locker room for a team that is going to take it on the chin a lot.
I hope this happens.
I still think Altman was trying to drive up JRs value…but cutting him and keeping Nwaba and Stauskas would be ok with me. Especially with the Stauskas-Beilein connection.
Still salty about getting nothing (so far) for JRs deal. I do dream about packaging him & Garland in some megadeal, but the vibe I get is we are gonna keep Darius. Though JR + another expiring (TT, Knight, Henson, Clarkson, Delly) could happen.
Koby’s presser indicated that if the deals all amount to eating so much salary it is not worth it (or may tie his hands on future salary eats) they could just cut him. IDK if he is trying to build value, but I would be fine with that.
The only scenario where I would consider trading a guy we literally just used the fifth pick on would be if we got a legit and durable star back with a minimum two years left on a deal. Trading for anything else would be legit insane.
Three to four years down the road is a different story.
On the Porter trade/gamble. The 4 seconds turn out to be pretty low 2nds (likely 50+) & one we were never gonna get anyway.
1) 2020 Utah 2nd (50+)
2) 2021 Portland 2nd
3) 2023 Portland 2nd
4) Miami 2024 (only conveys at 51-55)
More OK with the big swing, though I am not high on Porter.
Shooting splits for the 3 rooks + 3 new signees, FG/3pt/FT + measurables. Garland: 53.7/47.8/75.0; Vandy, 6’3″, 175 Windler: 54.0/42.9/84.7; Belmont, 6’8″, 200 Porter: 47.1/41.7/52.2; USC, 6’6″, 218. ————- Wade (2 way): 49.2/41.8/78.9; KSU; 6’10”, 228, F ———— Booth (SL): 43.4/36.7/74.9; Nova, 6’3″, G Bolden (??): C, Duke, 6’11”, 250. 57.9 FG/72.6 FTs. Everyone is a good to great 3 PT shooter save Bolden who didn’t take any. Everyone is a good to great FG% save Booth (who was 50%+ on 2s and a 2 time champ at Nova). Everyone a good FT% save Porter. Beilien wants guys who can… Read more »
Having said that:
1) Agree that shooting was a major weakness. Defense was the other. I’d have tried for guys who can do both (Kabengele), but shooting should be better. D looks worse, however.
2) We played a lot of Knight as the #2 last year, he is 6’3″.
Well, after a night I still have grave concerns, but trying not to hate it. No point, now. I worry about college coaches coming to the NBA, trying to run their “system”, and then figuring out it does not work at an NBA level (Pitino). I was comforted by early news of Beilien’s adaptabilty & how he was going to go slow & see what worked & what didn’t. That is apparently out the window as we drafted based on his 2 PG system. A system which, historically does not work well. Giving so much influence to a guy with… Read more »

Just was able to listen to the rest of the pod. Really agree with Tom regarding the Arnovitz nonsense. I like him, generally speaking, but he comes off as so elitist and annoying when he talks about the draft/ player agency. Sorry, Kevin — the NBA isn’t Real Life.

Just noticed the Celtics got Carsen Edwards with the 33rd pick. Ugh. I actually really like him there. Probably will be a ridiculous bench shooter.
I liked Blossomgame’s game, not just for his name. The only positive I see with today’s news is that maybe Cavs are more inclined to keep Nwaba.

He could take over for Longo /s
The responses to this tweet are treeemendous.
It’s cool to want things.
I know we all give Dan Gilbert a lot of crap, and it’s deserved a lot of the time, but the dude just paid a league record 5 million dollars for the 30th pick of the draft. I really think we take him for granted sometimes as our owner could be much worse. He wants a winner and doesn’t care the cost.
Oh yeah – we have so much appreciation for so many things and like next to none of the hundreds of millions of dollars in luxury tax CavsDan shells out. I’m not saying he’s perfect, but based on the things I measure an owner by, he’s a great owner.
I’m not a baseball fan anymore due to this specific issue. After the golden years of the mid to late nineties the Indians were essentially a farm team that never spent money or retained talent. It was so frustrating I just stopped watching baseball and have never really gone back to it. I know this team isn’t good and probably won’t be for at least a couple years, but a rebuild is so much more palatable with an owner like Dan.
Here, here! Too many teams in the Cavs situation wouldnt touch the luxury tax in a rebuild. Dan may make bad decisions sometimes, but he obviously gives a damn and proves it over and over.
The guy has also put a lot into Cleveland and Detroit, teo cities that were lost causes to most when I was growing up. Knowing people heavily involved in both cities it is astounding to see some of the turn around.
I still wonder if a bigger deal might be brewing with Garland. That summer league thing is weird.
I’m bracing for a Garland/ salary for Wiggins/ Culver blockbuster…which would be ridiculous (since the Cavs could have just taken Culver if they wanted him), but the NBA is where ridiculous happens…
It’s also at the moment (correct me if I’m wrong) just Fedor’s sources. I was going to put quote marks around “sources” but I want to be kind, i haven’t completely written him off as a journalist just yet.
I don’t think it’s that weird. They might also want to bring him along slowly so as not to set up the Sexton competition too early.
I will make a Summer League prediction: Porter Jr. will have the best dunk of the summer.
That will depend on if Zion plays.
Fair point. He won’t though, will he? He may play one game, I guess…
That one game will likely have at least one spectacular dunk.
Also I want to see Sexton, Garland, Wyndler, and Porter Jr all playing all the summer league games they can together. I want Beilein coaching and instituting his offense and getting these guys comfortable with his concepts (a la Kerr). The more dev time in the off-season these guys have with Beilein and each other, the better.
Can’t play Garland. He’s too fragile. Apparently.
Two big questions for me are whether Garland starts and how Garland, Sexton, and Porter Jr will be without the ball. I don’t think Garland should to start off. Sexton, Nwaba, Cedi, Love, Nance. Garland, Delly, Wyndler, Henson, Ante/TT off the bench for big front or Garland, Delly, Porter Jr,/Clarkson, Wyndler, Ante/TT/Henson for small ball secondary. Or I guess you could have Nance off the bench to make those bigger secondary lineups a bit more mobile. As to the second, Porter Jr was better with the ball. More comfortable shooting off the dribble. Can catch and shoot. But may take… Read more »
I like the though of those lineups.
From The Ringer article: 26. Cleveland Cavaliers: Dylan Windler, F, Belmont The Cavs, like seemingly every other team in this year’s draft, clearly put a huge emphasis on 3-point shooting in their selections. The big selling point with Windler, a senior from Belmont, is his shooting: He shot 42.9 percent from 3 on 7.1 attempts per game. He can do other things, too —he has great size (6-foot-8 and 196 pounds) and rebounding ability (10.8 rebounds per game) for a shooter—but his ability to stretch the defense is what will get him on the floor early in his NBA career.… Read more »
Windler’s size gives me more confidence that his shot will translate to the NBA. I’d be more concerned if he was 6’4″. He may be worthless on D, I don’t know…but if he is, he will fit well with most of the roster.
What’s wrong with his shot as a catch and shoot guy?
I don’t think anything is wrong with his shot. The Ringer article questioned how well he would do against NBA caliber defenders. I think his size will allow him to be effective as a shooter.
I mean if you’re asking him to fly around screens and set screens, move around the perimeter, and opportunistically drive off of hard closeouts I think he will be just fine. I don’t think they’ll expect him to be handling or doing much outside of spacing. Seemed like an acceptable pick to me at the time.
I don’t get that grade unless you’re just looking at conference strength.
The Cavs just need to prove they can develop players. I cringe every time I think about Danny Green and Joe Harris.
Windler also has a 6’10 wingspan. Watching his videos he also seems like he’s taking pro threes, so the extra distance seems negligible. The mire I read about him, the more high on him I am. First NCA game ever he drops 7 3s at 50% for 35pt total. Good under pressure. He also has several 30/20 games in his career. And his effective fg% stats are astounding. Im not hosting an allstar campaign for him, but by this point id be astounded if he doesnt turn into a legit nba player (probably just a really solid bench guy, but… Read more »
The more videos I watch of the picks the more I like what we did. We needed shooting and we got that. It’s a 3 point shooting league, we sucked at it last year. I don’t understand the hatred/disdain for Sexton. The kid clearly busted his ass last year to get better and he did. Having a second PG that can actually play the position, as opposed to shoot-first Clarkson and second team Delly (I don’t see Knight being here next season), will definitely help the team, possibly moving Sexton to the 2 where in my opinion he will flourish.… Read more »
If it’s just weed, that’s a silly concern. Especially as more and more nba alum have come out admiting to it’s usefulness, especially medicinally.
Personally i mich prefer alcohol…but as for team issues, you don’t see a lot of barfights and public scandle from a stoned guy looking for doritos.
I gotta say I’m still hesitant to really stand firm behind him and there are plenty of things I’ve disagreeded with him about, but I’m starting to really like Altman. I know full fledged support for him isn’t entirely popular and I’m not there yet either, but listening to his post draft press conference really impressed me. He was incredibly clever multiple times with what he said and what he didn’t say. His answer about trading JR was great about doing his best to maintain that the Cavs have reasons not to trade him (to try to maintain value). I… Read more »
What is yr timezone Jude? I’m drunk but it’s the perfectly acceptable time of 10:30pm in AWST.
Oh, forgot to say – I also watched the presser and you make nothing but valid points here. Of course, that may be the effect of the Bloody Shiraz Gin I’ve just discovered….
Kindred spirits! Though I live in the Cleveland area, so i think i posted that around 8am or so. Always been a night owl and most of my post 21 tear old life has been spent as a bartender, so the sun coming up is often my signal to stop drinking soon when I drink.
Also had a long night of catching up with an old friend after the draft about the psychotic baby boomer relatives we are saddled with.
On to important things…what is this Bloody Shiraz Gin you speak of?
So a bunch of beer and scotch later, I’m feeling better about some things. I’ll check my disappointment at Garland due to his private workout info, the fact that they at least asked Sexton first, and the fact of it being early in the Cavs rebuild. Im much happier about Wyndler after figuring out who the hell he is. I like the one of 3 guys in Div I averaging 20+points/10+reb thing and the 7 triples for like 35 points in a tourney game thing. Porter seems like a perfect gamble pick at 30. I also love than one of… Read more »
I wouldn’t be surprised if Porter turns out to be the best player they took in this draft, with a bullet. So much of that is up to him. I don’t usually read the ringer, but they had a good piece on him, worth reading.

EG was singing my song in the podcast and Fedor’s article is excellent. The Cavs drafted 3 of the best shooters in the draft. The Cavs were awful on the offensive end: ranked 28th in FG% and 20th in 3pt FG% last season. And they only have retained 1 out of their 3 best 3pt shooters last year in Sexton. Also interesting from the Fedor article was his comment that Beilein watched the tape of last season and determined that shooting was a “glaring weakness.” Another interesting stat is that 8 out of the 10 best teams in 3pt shots… Read more »
I severely doubt Nwaba starts in front of Cedi. Nwaba is obviously a better defender, but Cedi has 4 inches and way more offense. With Garland/Sexton I think they will use Cedi’s height and hope for defensive growth rather than playing 3 guys that are 6’4″ or shorter without a reliable rim protector.
Now if they start Nwaba at the 2 and put Garland next to Delly in the second unit for awhile, that could be very interesting.
Either way, they need to trade some Bigs and Guards for wings quickly or the Cavs are a couple injuries away from looking like a weird version of Gulliver’s Travels or the Wizard of Oz in munchkin land…
Gulliver’s travels. That is good. Lol.

This doesn’t make any sense. He’s either healthy or he’s not… unless they are holding Garland to trade him elsewhere…
This is bizarre…..
To me it says they are thinking of using him in another trade elsewhere. Or maybe hope to use him in a trade.
For what though??? Doesn’t make sense unless they’re going after Beal?
Or Bol…
Why play anyone in SL, then?

Sounds like Horford is going to Dallas.
I really kind of love that.
Also on LeBron and all his tampering:

When the Laker sign Bugs to the vet min, I’m gonna be pissed.

Well… Surprise… the Ringer and Bill Simmons don’t think the Cavs did that well:

At least I saw something with Simmons whining about the Celtics.
Don’t really disagree with the idea that the Cavs may need to trade a guard in the future…right now there’s little talent on the roster, but at some point you need to build a team, and Sexton and Garland on the floor together likely will make not much sense.
My grade sort of depends on what happens with that. If it somehow works with those two great. If not the grade will depend on what we get in a trade.
I’ve only seen LeBron and Davis play together once. And it was during last years all-star game. Davis had lots of trouble grabbing Bron’s bounce passes.
See 2012 Olympics…I think. Not sure if they actually played together much or at all. Also likely irrelevant because of time, but still…
Hassan Whiteside To Opt In For 2019/20:

Good luck Miami and go F yourselves!
Hope the best for Dan. Uh….well….Nick takes over for now????
If Gilbert was in the hospital when he had a stroke, then it should bold well for him. With strokes it’s all about timing. The quicker you react and treat, then the better off. It’s weird he’s been hospitalized this long, but probably a good sign he’s moved on to outpatient treatment.
Absolutely. One specific drug is hugely effective for strokes but has a super short window *used to be 20 minutes, maybe a bit longer now) before it becomes useless. Im guessing (and hoping) he ended up very fortunate…but being a billionaire, im sure he doesn’t want to be in public until his speech is as normal as possible. My grandmother had no where near as fast care and took many months to return to mostly normal speech. She continued to have a little trouble with some words for years, but otherwise entirely recovered with no other noticable side effects. Ironically… Read more »
My father unfortunately died from a stroke so yeah, timing is absolutely everything. Hope Dan recovers quickly.
I’m sorry for your loss. I hope we didn’t come off as callous.
The THT top 10-15 projection was insane in my opinion.
Everyone was a top 15 pick tonight. Even Kay Felder!
That being said Nate Silver’s 538 rated THT pretty well as a prospect.
I mean his strengths and weaknesses seemed late first rounder at best. The stepien had him as 8th best I think.
I love the Nets grabbing Claxton at 31.great situation for him.
Porter Jr is a wing/shooting guard. Kid is strong and 6’6″.
I also agree Memphis maybe had the second best draft. Clarke is a great fit with Morant and JJJ.
But yes that means pretty much 3 wings, 3 points, and two combo guards as far as size. So they need Nwaba.
Sexton, Garland, Delly
Nwaba, Porter Jr.
Cedi, wyndler
Love, Nance
TT (until traded), Ante, Henson.
They need to dump Clarkson, Knight, and TT ASAP.
Plus knight
Yeah agree with Nate in that we need wings.
Agree with Eli. They should’ve taken Culver at 5. But I still like Garland.
ESPN (Mike Schmitz) love what the Cavs did.
