CtB Trifecta: Cavs @ Knicks Part 2 (or, Where’s Mobley?)
2023-11-01 Off By Chris FrancisGood evening CtB!
The Cavs were easily dispatched by the New York Knicks 109-91 last night in front of a nationally televised audience, a game that bore a familiar resemblance to the 4-1 beatdown of last year’s playoffs. The Cavs are in the heart of the Big Apple tonight for a back to back rematch that promises to be Nightmare on 4 Pennsylvania Plaza. How did we get here? Let’s figure it out…
1. Where’s Mobley?
The most alarming part of the brand new season is how ineffective Evan Mobley’s been for a supposed “future MVP” player. His scoring efficiency has plumeted (51% TS) and his passing is still not close to good enough for an offensive hub (14.3% assist percentage). He has the worst net rating (-12.4) by far among rotation players.. the next closest is Caris LeVert at -4.3.
There are signs of improvement, mainly his paint protection on defense and rebounding. But he and the Cavs’ coaching staff need to figure out how to get him into an offensive rhythm. If they don’t and DG and JA continue to be out for an extensive period of time, then the Cavs are staring down the barrel of a possible 1-9 start before facing the Portland Trail Blazers a few weeks from now. He’s the new “chosen one,” it’s time for him to show a more serious level of competitiveness, especially in a game where he specifically tried to hype it up:
2. The shooting still stinks
Max Strus, Georges Niang, and “James” Dean Wade are all crapping the bed from three. Thankfully it’s game five of the regular season, so there’s still time for improvement. It’s also an indication that the offense is completely out of sync: they don’t know when they’re getting their shots and they’re not ready to shoot when they do get the ball. Better passing from Mobley and Donovan Mitchell might be an antidote to their offensive struggles? Maybe they’re all cooked or too scared of the moment? They all better figure it out if they want to stop the losing streak.
3. Give me the Summer League Stars
Sam Merrill and Isaiah Mobley should be seeing the court this early in the year with this many injuries. Georges Niang clearly isn’t in playing shape yet and no one outside of Isaac Okoro can make a damn catch and shoot three. Hell let me see the whole Summer League starting lineup out there, they played with a competitive edge that has been non-existent so far this season. Shoutout to Nate for the good idea!
4. A quick word on the Knicks
The Knicks flat out humiliated the Cavs last night, and they didn’t even play all that well shooting only 44% from the field and collecting only 18 assists. They were able to beat the Cavs with good defense and mediocre isolation offense from the trio of Jalen Brunson, RJ Barrett, and Julius Randle. But they clearly play Cleveland with an edge, and the Cavs will have to learn how to beat them if they have any designs of actually being a good team.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio, Go Cavs!
THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE “ ROLLER COASTER S” BOUNCE BACK GAME 👍
That’s a no call. Total freaking flop
It wasn’t even a flop. It was nothing.
No. It was a flop when he fell down.
Oh fuck that call. Challenge thatm
Porter Jr. Has been a godsend.
REBOUNDING IS A LOST “ ART “—-NOT IN CAVS VOCABULARY
NEED TO LOCATE “ ORANGE MAMBA “ FOR SOME SCORING PUNCH 🍺🤪🍺🤪🍺😀🍺🤪
Brunson is not quite in Trae’s class as a foul merchant/ flopper, but he’s not far away.
Fantastic d Okoro, but no one rebounds.
He has been just super solid so far this year
Maybe that’ll get max going.
Okoro another quietly good game.
Monley slows down and let’s it come and it’s much better.
JFC Mobley. Just slow the dfdown.
FINALLY
Caris with the nice layin!
Okoro gotta give that ball back.
Please get yourself ejected, George’s.
Niang is one of the worst players I’ve ever watched.
You’d think after last season, the Cavs would be tired of Robinson embarrassing them on the boards, but you’d be wrong
The basket is a mile wide for DM!
Niang is utter trash
Somebody else do something. Just an absolutely horrific shooting game
Mitchell and a bunch of bricklayers.
Spida makes it look so easy from deep.
Rock fight!
Caris has no lift.
Finally able to get a stream without sound
Max STRUGGLING
Great dime, Caeis
Come om, Caris
TT! With a nice move to the hoop!
Nice d maxy
Honestly solid first quarter. Much better balance with bench/starters.
Glad they called that a shooting foul.
Switched to the Knicks feed in NBA app and it’s working now.
Porter explosive. Great pickup.
Where’s a good place to watch the game other than Ballys?
im using en be aye bite dot .com
Just tuned into the NBA app. Weirdest thing ever. Just getting the video feed and PA announcer.
Yep. That’s the nba app
Good news is you’ll get the Arena feed and all the bits they do during commercials
Anyone else having issues with Bally’s? I’m unable to sign in.

Missing the one man team. Mitchell awesome so far. Max gotta do more.
Yep. I can’t sign in.
Run a pick and roll. Cripes.
Terrible closeout Strus.
Spida on fiya
Randle bagging donuts.
This is embarrassing offense.
This is a rock fight.
Sorry about the donut pin.
Mitchrob Killen em.
Come on max. Grab the ball.
Cavs playing just sligfhy too fast.
Actually don’t hate the Niang start. If there’s a guy you can match him up with, it’s Randle
Evan a little amped up. Gotta settle down
Mitch ups Evan’s assist rate!
SPIDA! Nice board Okori
Damn I hate the Bally’s App.
JB trying to play Georges Rolling Donuts back into shape.
Wade screwed again.
DONT THINK CTB ARE HATING ON MOBES ——JUST REALIZING THAT POSSIBLY THE”EARLY ACCOLADES—SUPERLATIVES “ MIGHT HAVE BEEN PREMATURE—-OUR EXPECTATIONS MIGHT HAVE TO ADJUST——- BUT ALSO NOTHING WRONG WITH POINTING OUT HIS WEAKNESSES AND CHALLENGING HIM TO COMPETE AND IMPROVE——GO CAVS/ GO MOBES
If we start hating on Mobley we are truly a miserable crew. He’s good but going from good to great has fits and starts, ups and downs.
Criticizing shitty play doesn’t equal hate, why are you so sensitive?
Young players have shitty stretches and good ones all the time. We’re overfocusing on the negative, when he is just flattening the learning curve in normal 3rd year style.
Celebrate growth first, second and third!
Okay Ned Flanders!
Beats spending 82 games of hating!
You’re the only one who’s negative, literally every post of your is you whining about something.
Every post of “yours”
Not hating just questioning his offensive talents. The needle hasn’t moved much, if at all, into year 3. But I’m glad he got a home gym /s
I think he’s been fine this year. Force feed him. He’s gotta learn how to be a star.
And the Cavs’ outside shooting has been horrendous. He’s passed well.
This! You have to learn to be a star, which means having some genuinely shitty games as you try to do too more.
Every bad Mobley game I’m referring to him as NObley!
“MORE BEER PLEASE “ FOR NATE 👍👍🍺🍺
Wow.
Niang starting.
Bally sez he’s out
🤷
GIVING STRUS THE NICKNAME “ ROLLER COASTER “ — THAT IS WHAT HE HAS BEEN SO FAR-///WHICH MEANS HE SHOULD HAVE GOOD GAME TONIGHT——— MAN IT IS REALLY DIFFICULT TO WATCH “ HARD ROCK “ OWN OUR “ SUPER STAR MOBES
Come on man. You can’t bag on Mobley’s assist rate and true shooting when he’s consistently making the right pass out of double teams and guys are missing wide open Js. Mobley is seeing at least 1.5 guys with the help shading towards him on every possession. His next best inside threats are Okoro and Mitchell.
Anyway. Just a polite disagreement. Appreciate you getting the LT.
Yeah of course!
Sure I can, just did! LMFAOO Don’t care, he’s supposed to be a super star time for him to show it!
…playing out of position with no PG??? crazy talk
Stars can play multiple positions and create for themselves.
What Star big could do that at 21?
Evan’s 22, and Anthony Davis, KG, Kevin Love, Dirk Nowitzki…????
That’s four guys out of at least 100+ bigs drafted in the lottery (and all surefire HOF guys except maybe Love). It’s a lot to expect a 90% percentile outcome, especially with the usage difference.
But if you aren’t happy with Mobley until he plays like KG, you are gonna be disappointed for a while yet.
