Live Thread: Nuggets @ Cavs (plus, some Quarter Pole Thoughts?)
2024-12-05Good evening CtB!
The Cavs welcome the Denver Nuggets to the Arctic shores of Lake Erie as these two teams face off in a primetime, nationally televised matchup. Even though we’re only 25% through the season, the parameters of the game are well-defined. For the Nuggets, they’re struggling to keep themselves out of the play-in in the West, even with the Herculean efforts of Nikola Jokić. Regardless, champions aren’t dead until they’re dead, so the Cavs should expect a championship effort from the road team tonight.
For the good guys, the Cavs are looking to stay in the top four of the East and ought to be going for the top seed in the East given their heightened aspirations. Also, this game would be considered one of the bigger wins of the season. The Cavs will begin a brutal three game stretch tonight where they could easily end up 0-3 if their approach is not professional. 1-2 would be understandable but maddening, 2-1 would be perfect, 3-0 would be a shock. The beauty and enjoyment of the season so far has been watching these young Cavs starting to rise and conquer every challenge they are given. Things are really falling into the Cavs’ place… Donovan Mitchell’s 2nd half against the Celtics, the elite offense, the massive contributions of the depth… it’s starting to feel like there’s real magic with this team…
Luckily, Donovan Mitchell has really risen to the challenge of leader of the team. The main contribution is keeping the guys loose and level-headed. Even when they were on that historic win streak to begin the season, Spida’s message was essentially, “We haven’t really done anything yet, we have bigger goals…” He’s got the guys locked in on a championship mindset, and it has produced some of the best basketball in franchise history so far.
What do the stats say?
The most obvious statistical story is the improvement of the offense. By shooting a couple more threes (about 36 attempts last year, 38 this year) and speeding up the pace (bottom 10 to top 10 this year) the Cavs have constructed a championship level offense. It’s amazing what a couple of tweaks can do for a team.
The biggest concerns really center around two things. First, the rebounding is mediocre at best. This will haunt the Cavs in the playoffs when creating more possessions becomes more important. Secondly, defensive drop off happening with Jarrett Allen on the court is something to watch (Cavs are a 118 defensive rating with Jarrett Allen on the floor, without Mobley this season in over 300 minutes of action). One big mitigating factor is Allen is having to matchup against more physicality and size in his minutes than Mobley. Or could be a sign that Allen’s simply wearing down given the lack of front court depth outside of Tower City? Whatever the case, that sounds like the reason the Cavs were sniffing around Kyle Kuzma and you have to wonder if POBO Koby Altman is scouring the league for some other competent power forwards.
To address Max Strus, it sounds like there’s been a delay in his recovery efforts and that he’s not close to playing. Yours truly believes the Cavs are just hoping he might see the court post-All Star Break so he can ramp up for the playoffs. But out for the season seems like it’s now in play, just given how Ty Jerome went last year granted we don’t think Strus has had surgery. Stay tuned and stay prayed up for getting the Strus loose.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:00PM Eastern time and will broadcasted live on NBATV and locally on Fanduel Sports Network, Go Cavs!
Between Levert, Ty and Merrill, the amount of shooting and playmaking off the bench is ridiculous. Just one of them getting hot makes such a difference. And still without Strus who will add even more. (I realize he’s nominally a starter but we’ll see how they work him back in when he’s finally cleared to play).
Strus practicing with contact, Emoni going full speed.
Would be fun to see Max against PHL/MIL in a few weeks.
what are you talking about? the Cavs already reported to the NBA an estimated return date for Strus a month out after saying he was coming back this week.
Atkinson said he was practicing with contact. That’s what I’m talking about.
Ok gotcha, so you’re leaving out the part where he said there’s no timeline still, and ignoring the official team injury reports.
he said there was no timeline a few days ago. yesterday during pre-game KA said Strus was practicing with contact.
get your head out of your weirdo spreadsheets and process new information when it arrives
it’s funny how much of a moron you are for being an arrogant prick LMFAO
he’s getting closer and practicing with contact. that is new information. what I said – he’s practicing with contact (true) and it would be fun to see Max earlier than later (also true). your belief — that he’s being saved for February! — is based on nothing rational. how you can write so much, but read so poorly, AND be right about so little is astonishing. just because you scrape other people’s lineup data in a spreadsheet doesn’t mean your judgment and conclusions are worth shit, because they aren’t. your thinking on basketball has not evolved meaningfully in YEARS. you… Read more »
As a longtime (c.14 years!) blog lurker/extremely infrequent commenter: Mrsteal – I do appreciate your presence on the blog. Your perspective tends to be more positive and less reactive than that of many of the other commenters here. That’s a nice counterweight to have. I think it’s overall good for the community. But, what I very much do not appreciate is that you have repeatedly gone all scorched-earth on Nate and Chris when you guys disagree. Yes, they both definitely needle you here and there, but come on. This reply is not cool. You can’t possibly think this is okay.… Read more »
Appreciate you having our back. I agree with you. It’s one thing to disagree, even passionately over an opinion. The personal attacks against people who literally pay to run this site and generate content (however meager it may be of late) is ridiculous. I disagree with Chris all the time, but I don’t make it personal and mean. I think I know who this person is and they were banned some time ago and appear to be back. I would appreciate if they took a few days off so I don’t have to go through the hassle of banning them.… Read more »
I know you think it’s cols. Intuitively that feels incorrect to me, but then again you might have some insider info that I don’t have.
good observation.
I am more likely to agree with MrSteal’s analysis than that of Nate and/or Chris. but we should all avoid getting pissed off and replying with something 10x worse. things just go downhill from there.
a good online rule that I try to follow (admit to occasional slipups): when you write something obnoxious, DON’T click send or enter for a minute. that gives you a chance to tone it down, or turn it into something (hopefully) funny. wait another minute befor you post it. or, just drop it.
Rules for life
Atkinson gives encouraging injury updates on Max Strus and Emoni Bates
DIDNT SEE ICE GET HURT—- WHEN— HOW BAD
Knee contusion prior to the main break. So not likely to be structural, but it’ll take a day or two to be sure. I don’t imagine he’ll be on the road trip. Kenny wasn’t too worried about it.
Okoro told KA he’s fine, he’ll be fine.
I think he bumped knees with someone, not sure who.
BUCKAROO GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU—- YEP — STILL ABLE TO “ PUT A SMILE ON “ THE “ MRS NOMAD —— THINK THAT IS DUE MORE TO THE LAUGHTER AT MY “ SHORT” COMING s IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN 🤪🤪———— TEAM I COACH DOING GREAT—— JUST LOST TO LAST YEARS STATE RUNNER UP BY 3—— A GAME WE SHOULD HAVE WON— GAVE AWAY—— GREAT BEING IN THE GYM AGAIN—-EVEN THE “ ZEBRAS “ ARE HAPPY TO SEE ME ON THE BENCH——- GO CAVS —— FUN TEAM TO WATCH/ SUPPORT
Missed it but good to see the win.
How bad did the Okoro injury look?
A full 4 days off after the b2b in Charlotte and Miami. Lets take both.
Can’t wait to see Strus.
Wonder if we gonna rest a guard against Charlotte with no Melo?
(it doesn’t look like they are expecting Strus to miss months, he’s working out)
Well, Okoro got hurt in this one, but yes been primarily playing the three
Nice game. Like what I saw from LeVert. Hopefully Sam and Dean find their shot.
LeVert seems to have a really good game every week or two. Cavs won’t be losing many of those!
Sam was on fire tonight.
Lol. 2-7 guess not. Was thinking previous game.
Jerome has a tough first shift, actually got the slow step blocked. I’ll live with Vert and Ty trading off 6MOY games.
First game back from flu.
Cavs kept the Nuggets in a value box all night
ha-ha!
BENCH—- GREAT REBOUNDING TONIGHT—-1/2 THE TOTAL!!!
Wade really really good on that end. Allen had double digits too
NOMAD bro.. hope its hanging well and saluting when called upon.. glad you are smoking the competition in western OH.. cavs are a mystical phenomenon.. way behind my pay grade to understand.. but it is a thing to behold.. and i don’t think they have come close to peaking.. enjoy dude.. regards to the MRS NOMAD..
GOOD “ W” !!!!
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Came to play tonight
SLAM THAT DOOR DG
BEAUTIFUL TWO MAN CARIS AND DONOVAN
LeVert got fouled too.
SLOPPY—-CLEAN IT UP OR WE ARE GOING LOSE
Cabs absolutely brain farting here
Merrill doesn’t give a fuck who you are. Just dusted Aaron Gordon.
Merrill had a fantastic game. If he drives to score even twice a game it changes so much.
Still shot badly but don’t care if he makes plays and rebounds.
lol. Cavs got away with one and drill a 3. Love it.
Denver’s rotation a “who he play for” competition.
Mobley with some bully-ball!
Well,this one’s going well.
DAMMIT ALMOST
Caris!
Not off in time by a fingertip.
JA needs to shoot that . Gets to the line next time.
but for the ATL hiccups, this cavs team is kicking ass and taking names in an unrivaled manner.. one of the greatest one-year growth in team performance in pro sports history, imho.. just f*cking unreal.. enjoy dudes.. this is going to be a year for the ages.. just as i have a nose for the scheit, i have a nose for the roses as well..
Lol. Nice to see some positivity! The Bills, Lions, and Cavs are three of the best teams in pro sports right now and all play near the shores of Lake Erie. This is why the Browns have to move to Brook Park.
positive is good.. i love juggernauts, but not many of those in the 216 in my lifetime.. sadly, ridiculing ineptitude has been something i have had a lot of practice in..
All the parts were there last year. Patience was key
Sam. Filthy.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO MERRILL JUMPER IS BACK BABYYYY
Strauther is a traffic cone.
God they turn the floor over fast.
DARIUS GARLAND!!!
Playing well.
Oof. Ball don’t lie.
The best in part of this offense is every player is empowered to be a playmaker
JOKIC IS A BEAST/——SO GOOD!!!
RAGE TIMEOUT DENVER LETS GOOOO
DAMMIT OKORO DONE FOR THE NIGHT SOUNDS LIKE CAN WE PLEASE STAY HEALTHY
OH MY GOD THANK GOD DG IS YOUNG
MOBLEY FOR THREE!!!!!! THREE TRIPLES?
Garland wheeling.
JAMES DEAN
jesus Mobley blows a bunny 5 point swing.
Wade starting for Okoro in the 2nd half, LETS FUCKING GO
this is the crazier one, Sam and Okoro absolutely kill it and they never fucking play them.
dog shit apart, amazing together so naturally lets never see it LMFAOOO
Oof. That was lazy as shit by Jerome. Didn’t run the floor on offense and the Cavs blew a two on one. Then he didn’t get back on D and Braun got a layup for a 4-5 point swing.
he’s sick, probably should’ve just played CPJ I don’t get it.
I forgot. Still. Awful play
CPJ was out due to illness per the pregame show
Caris right where he left off
LET CARIS COOK !!!!
Here’s the Wade Okoro tandem.
The drive and kick Cavs.
Bad stretch.
Allen is so weak
Don’t get what KA’s trying…. he going Wade/OKoro instead of Okoro/Sam…. he’s using the least optimal combo of both pairs.
Building a dataset?
yup…. already discovered Sam/Okoro is the optimal combo instead of apart.
Wade and Okoro both far better split up than together.
I just meant Kenny. I know all about your spreadsheets.
ah gotcha LMFAO yup that’s true
Cavs apparently playing too well to get calls.
Fuggin refs!
Westbrook such a dork.
SAM AND CARIS = THE BEAUTIFUL GAME
Sam sends the Nuggs back to the bench!
CARIS IS COOKING 🥘 👍👍🔥
Let Caris Cook!
Whelp. Allen sucked on that dunk.
Caris! Cookin!
Allen on the floor with Niang, Garland and Merrill. I wonder why his defensive numbers suck
Merrill actually depresses the offense, Cavs defense is elite on the floor with him.
104.9 defensive rating with Sam on the floor, only 114 ortg
Let Caris Cook.niang ugh.
Fantastic passing for a Niang tripple
LOVE JA BEING MIKED UP
REALLY IMPRESSED HOW DG IS PLAYING DEFENSE THIS YEAR
this three game stretch doesn’t look that scary, only the Nugs have a winning record
It’s not just about opponents, they have to play Charlotte on the road early tip in about 36 hours followed by another road game on a back to back in Miami.
good point
Count me among the group that thinks the Allen problems have to do with him playing with A lot with Niang and Garland lineups.
JA/DG tied minutes major culprit for sure.
Go Cavs!
THIS IS MADDENING/ FRUSTRATING ON THE DELAY OF STRUS s RETURN—— WAS INJURY WORSE THAN REPORTED—- THINK WE ALL HAVE BEEN ANTICIPATING HOW HE WOULD LOOK/ PERFORM IN THIS OFFENSE—— I SAY NO TO KUZMA —— YES TO BONAFIDE BACK UP POST
