Live Thread: Raptors @ Cavs (plus, He’s The One)
2025-01-09Good afternoon CtB!
Thoughts betwixt one of the Cavs’ biggest wins of the season against the West’s best Oklahoma City Thunder and tonight’s SEGABABA against the LeBronto Raptors here on the banks of the Cuyahoga River…
1. A Celebration of the NBA
There’s a lot of discourse on NBA Twitter regarding the league’s television ratings (namely lack thereof) and the reasons why… yours truly personally thinks it’s gotta be the most boring, stupid conversation in the NBA sphere. But many others are invested in this narrative, and as such dictated the response of many in NBA media regarding last night’s game, which was arguably the best game of the NBA calendar, between the two undisputed best teams in the NBA so far this season, and a game that delivered on the hype with a clutch fourth quarter showdown, with the good guys coming out on top 129-122. It was a game of offensive mastery from both squads, but Tower City was able to really put their imprint on the game and win this one by attacking the smaller, worn down OKC frontcourt. This game shows how OKC needs a healthy Chet Holmgren to really match the size of Tower City.
Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley are the first big man duo to each have 20 PTS, 10 REB, & 6 AST in a game since Tim Duncan and David Robinson in 1998 pic.twitter.com/WkZOcqbyF7

2. Evan Mobley is The One
The emergence of Evan Mobley as a potential All-Star and team’s MVP is probably the singular key factor in this historic 2024-25 Cavs season. What’s so beautiful about his emergence this year is how the whole organization is invested into bringing forth Mobley’s best self, his teammates most importantly. It starts with Donovan Mitchell’s leadership, who was putting up an absolute stinker for the night so took a back seat and let Darius Garland and Evan Mobley carry the team home on offense down the stretch. Also, none of this happens without DG’s naturally unselfish (sometimes to a fault) play. But this year, DG has transformed himself into the best clutch player in the NBA:
Darius Garland has indeed been unstoppable in the clutch https://t.co/kTPWNOZlF5 pic.twitter.com/bUQeURkRlE

Like DG, Mobley is a naturally unselfish player. It’s always been said of him that he doesn’t need to score to impact the game, but now he’s an elite third option on a historically good offensive team with also Defensive Player of the Year impact on defense. Anyone that’s ever played the game knows that basketball is the most fun to play with the most unselfish teammates. The most important asset that will make the core four work ultimately is the fact that all four players are really humble superstars who care solely about winning. You can’t win at this level without being fully bought into team basketball. When you just care about the team’s success, historic things such as this year’s Cavs take place.
3. A word on OKC
No denying they’re a great team. SGA is a problem, and they play smart basketball. But they are also the second worst rebounding team in the NBA (by %rate) and that played out exactly to the letter as Tower City was able to slam the door on this game by outworking OKC on the boards. I’m intrigued to see how the Cavs play whenever Chet is healthy. OKC’s rebounding problem is precisely why they don’t instill fear looking from the outside. It’s much more concerning to think about slugging it out on the boards against a healthy Orlando Magic team in a seven game series than a complete finesse team such as OKC.
4. Tonight, LeBronto…
The hilariously “not-tanking but still tanking” LeBronto Raptors visit the banks of the Cuyahoga tonight in a test of mental toughness for the good guys. The Cavs had a big, emotional win last night, but it’s just a January game… as a championship contender you can’t have slip ups in the regular season. Tonight is a low key gut check test for the Cavs to maintain their competitive edge and focus.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:00PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Fanduel Sports Network, Go Cavs!
Hopefully Spida back for Indy.
But that was a gritty win. Our top guys all played well without Donovan: Mobes, JA, Vert, Max, and most of all, DG.
JA (6) and Evan (4) had 10 of our 16 o boards, more than the 9 by the Raps.. those O boards were huge…we also doubled them up on the FT lean, 25 FTA to 13FTA.
DG!!!!
Muthafuckin Darius Garland. Clutch emporer.
Gritty win!
BRING BACK THE JUNKYARD DAWG CHAIN
Please God, never
The kind of win that good teams pull off.
I thought that shot was so slow that it would fall short.

Momentum swinging and crowd on board. Cavs are in this now.
I smell a tired LeBronto team
Barnes has such a punchable face.
Boucher is murdering them. Trade for this dude
How you letting the CRaptors put up 42 in a quarter?
Looks like the Cavs are in this.

LMFAOOOOOOOO
Got an autograph from, and pic w, Austin Carr. Told him how my first Cavs game was 1973 against Kareem Lakers. He said that was the real deal. I then complimented him on his energy all these decades later. He thanked me and smiled.
Back at the Q tonight. Definitely different energy. At least Olynyk getting energetically booed every time he touches it. Georges or Olynyk? I think I go gorgeous.
Back-to-backs are hard, take care of yourself man! 😂
Hell yeah Patrick try to stay warm!
well all things considered, glad to be tied. Just need the bench to quit shitting the bed.
Boucher barking at Barrett about D rotations.
Allen making it seem like he barely played last night! What a run!
LMFAOOOOOOOOO TWO WAY JA

SIT ON HIS LEFT SHOULDER!!!!
Caris is oooonnn tonight!
LET CARIS COOK
YOU CANNOT LET RJ GO LEFT
THAT “ TARGET “ IS HUGE——/ CAVS GOING TO GET EVERY TEAM s BEST SHOT——- NO SPIDA DOESNT HELP
TY JEROME
GEORGEOUS GEORGES!!!!
Aside from chemistry…is any of us opposed to trading Niang for a tall stalk of celery? He still bugs the heck out of me
unfortunately he’s essential due to the unreliability of Wade’s health/body. But he’s definitely salary filler in any potential trade.
But don’t underestimate the chemistry part… i think he’s really the only guy who fills that role for the Cavs, maybe Ty Jerome and Strus too…. pesky grizzled veterans.
I’d trade him straight up for Chris Boucher at halftime this game good lord haha
get real. what don’t you like about a solid team?
the same people that wanted to trade Garland and Allan last summer now want to trade Niang.
Raoul there is nothing similar about those two groups of people.
Makes no sense that’s non-challengeable. Any call by the referee should be challengeable.
WAS THINKING THE SAME ABOUT EVIL 😈—- HOPE/ PRAY HE IS OK
Gonna be Game astung tonight earching PSU v Notre Dame.
Go Cavs.
SO FAR THIS SEASON—-OUR CORE 4 — FORTUNATELY HAVE BEEN HEALTHY/ INJURY FREE—— HOPE I DONT JINX THEM —- GO CAVS
damn, hope EG is OK, just saw they’re evacuating LA county.
WHAT A PLAY DG TO JA
might need a little DG or Mobley 40 burger tonight
Looks like no Spida tonight.
yeah, tweaked his knee last night, and given how bad he played kinda worried about a nagging knee thing from last year too.
Looked OK on that dunk.
“33” ——— LIKE THE ROLLING ROCK I AM DRINKING WITH THE FAMOUS “
33” ON THEIR LABEL—— IS A GREAT NUMBER—- GO CAVS !!!! ————- NO “ EGG LAYING “
ALLOWED !!
Rolling Rock is the last beer (that I know of) that still has a 33 on the label. 33, shorthand for “FDR won, fuck you prohibitionists”, was on all the bottles back in the day.
Go Cavs!
It’s pronounced EvanTo, and as good as Evan was last night, Allen was better. It was the most dominant game I’ve seen from him on both ends of the court while Mobley was brilliant but struggled with turnovers. And how freaking good was Max Strus on both ends of the floor. It’s an embarrassment of riches in Cleveland. Great write-up, Chris
Great stuff, Chris.
The nuggets on JA/Mobes marching The Admiral/Timmy and DG’s clutch performance are fantastic.
YOUR COLUMN IS JUST LIKE LAST NIGHT s GAME……..GREAT!!👍👍👍
