An open thread as the Cavs hold vigil until final wave of free agency is complete. The Cavs haven’t re-signed James Harden yet, presumably because Koby Altman is at work behind the scenes to make a move to replace the 3 and D players lost in free agency: Dean Wade and Keon Ellis. The rumors have been Jonathan Kuminga or Peyton Watson are in the mix to become Cavaliers. There has also been a tiny bit of chatter that a bigger move could happen such as Michael Porter Jr. or Kevin Durant. Let’s see what kind of magic Koby Altman can muster, Go Cavs!

I will be the first to submit that perhaps the Cavs have solved the mystery of the SF pisition and that Watson could be just what the doctor ordered (ducks).

Hopefully. Trying not to get hopes too high. While different players, had similar aspirations w Hunter (which ultimately were dashed).
His defensive metrics were great in college but not near as good as Watson’s in the pros.
Now, I am not saying Watson is Scottie Pippen or Tony Allen on D, but better than Hunter.
“many a slip between cup and the lip”, as grandmothers used to say, but I think Watson is a pretty good gamble — there is a decent chance he will be really good
Altman is gonna have to pull some serious kung-fu with Whitmore or we only will have room for 1 more guy all season.
With CPJ, Thomas, & Proctor on roster, I do not see a move for a PG or SG. They are hoping one (or more) of those guys claim a rotational spot.
SG/SF also looks good with Spida, Merrill, Tyson, Hezonja & Harden all possible.
So that leaves PF/SF types, PF/C types. And Cs.

He better be. If I had to rank the guys on our roster, Hezonja would be #8. He is gonna have to play some significant minutes this year.
He is a much better offensive player than Wade. But Wade is a much better defender. I think the FO is hoping Tomlin can give us that defense & rebounding at the 4/3.

Hezonja being a real player would be fantastic for us. Loke I said, I hope this leads to a Rubio-esque run for us.
He is 6’8″, 220. The reigning EuroLeague MVP for Real Madrid. Was the #5 pick in 2015. If he can give us real minutes at SF & PF, then we at least have an 8 man playoff rotation that makes sense when everyone is healthy.
One of Harden/Mitchell and Mobley/Allen on the foor at all times to cover PG & C. Merrill and Tyson at SG/SF off the bench Hezonja at SF/PF, and Watson playing 2-4.
CPJ & Bryant as the “backup” PG & C who are really the #3 choices behind Spida/Mobes. Hopefully Thomas at combo guard and Tomlin at PF/SF develop into rotationsl pieces. 9-12.
That is thin 9-12. Or at least umproven. Proctor + whatever we can turn Whitmore into is probably all we have room for. Most likely only 14 players.
If we trade Whitmore for nothing, we’d just have room for a vet min $2.4 mil deal for #14 and a real cheap $1.3 mil deal or a pro-rated deadline signing for #15.

Spotrac has us with $28.4 mil of space under the 1st apron and Harden’s hit at $29.9. Someone has to go before Harden can officially sign. Unless those numbers are off by a bit. Whitmore makes $5.4+, if we waive & stretch for 3, that is $1.7 ish in dead cap for 3 years. 5.4-1.8 = $3.7 worth of space. $3,638,873 to be precise. This time last year our starting lineup was tiny and injured (Strus had his fracture and Garland on nine toes). Not to mention relying on Lonzo, a huge health risk.
This year it’s huge and durable (assuming no recurring hamstring for PW) and healthy. There are a lot of ways you can fail, but credit to Koby for making moves to shuffle the deck and address weaknesses.

All we have is a vet min type deal. I dod not see a whole lot of Cs or PGs I liked.
Bobby Marks is saying the Cavs expected luxury tax & salary payments have decreased from $392 million to $218 million.
Shaving off $174 mil in payroll whilest also improving the team’s ceiling is a shrewd bit if business by the FO.
The floor is also lower. Depth took a bit of a hit. We are betting on the flashes Tyson & Watson showed last year being real. Even so, that is only a Solid Seven with Merrill counted.
We are gonna need some combo of Hezonja, Tomlin, CPJ, Bryant, Thomas, Proctor, and whomever we sign to be #14 to fill out the rest of the rotation.
Bryant has proven he can handle regular season spot minutes. CPJ at times, too. Tomlin flashed briefly as an energy guy. Bettin on them to be an asset come PO time is another matter.
For #14, you could make a case for anything but a short combo guard or small SG/SF type: PF/SF, PF/C, C, PG.

If things break powerfully right, we could still contend. Mobley & Watson level up. Tyson level up. Harden in shape and taking care of the ball. Atkinson improves. Plus something from Thomas, Tomlin, Hezonja, or CPJ. Plus maybe finding a contributor with the spots left (14/15) now or at the deadline.
That is a lot of iffs. But the Knicks did not look like contenders down 2-1 to Atlanta.
saw Windy discussing the fact that the Knicks were unusually healthy last year and are not likely to be so again.
It’s on Kenny and Harden to extract enough value from Harden in the next two years and then on the FO to figure out whether to shop his expiring or ride it out.
But 20/8 with 43% from 3 is a legitimately great third option, more productive and durable than DG and for $13 m less.

the trade might turn out to be a bust at one extreme, or (if Watson develops into a top player) an all time steal at the other extreme.
all in all, I think it is a pretty good gamble. it is so hard to add another top player. Watson was only available because the complicated salary tax had the Nuggets over a barrow. the Cavs got lucky because Koby cobbled up a way to make the money work. about 25 other teams would love to have gotten Watson for cheap.
If Watson is somewhere close to Mikal / OG it’s a bargain. It’s possible, OG looked a lot like Watson in 2020

The kid can play. And has intruiging potential with athleticism, shot blocking, and shooting.
But also remember, he has 1 good year and it is difficuit to believe he’ll get better looks here than with Jokic & Murray feeding him in Denver.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think it’s a reflection of Whitmore one way or the other. Cavs were just getting creative with salary cap, it was always a money move.
I disagree here. They want another guy who can contribute now and think that shedding $3 mil in savings can help us land someone we otherwise could not.
We want to make another signing beyond Harden and want to free up $$ so Harden + new guy fit.
Or we want to give Harden a couple mil more.
I assumed it was to make more room to give Harden. But I am far from an expert on any of this, kinda breaks my brain, so take anything i salary-wise with a grain of salt.
The thing about Watson I like is the potential ability to hamper/hound guards/small wings. Brunson. Maxey. SGA types. He can guard 1-4.
And Harden can guard up if he goes down.

They are expected to waive Whitmore, which apparently gives them the ability to stretch his salary out across multiple years to reduce the cap hit.
I will say this, I am not sure we are better than when we started.

Higher ceiling. But lower floor.
They’ve advanced in the playoffs 3 years in a row, first time ever without LeBron. But by all accounts they didn’t have a finalist’s ceiling. If Watson pans out well he seems to add enough (in the right ways) to move the needle – forming an elite defensive front court trio where you actually need to guard the SF more than was the case with Wade (if Watson continues to shoot like he did last year, and/or adds something to his bag which still is possible).
And I think any version of “success” this year would have to include at least 1 of Thomas, Tyson or Proctor breaking out.

Beyond that? CPJ & Bryant are the “backup” PG & C but really 3rd string the way JA/Mobes and Harden/Spida stagger. Borderline rotation guys.
Hezonja has not been in the NBA for half a decade and Tomlin, Proctor, and Thomas are unproven.
IF two of those guys blossom into quality NBA players we will be fine. But if they don’t, we are gonna struggle some.
I think waiving Whitmore and bringing in a proven vet (or two) would be wise. PG, C, and PF all on the table.

Strus will be missed, but I am optimistic that by next April we’ll be getting more from the combo of Watson + Tyson, both turning 24 this season (with Tyson as a rotation player but not starting) than we would have been getting from ages 31 & 30 Strus + Wade. After coming back from that leg injury Strus was realistically a one-way player (O only), and so is Wade in reverse. These guys have a chance to be positives at both ends.

Hunter was never a good defender. Watson is. 94th percentile in blocks. Hunter remains the NBA’s worst help defender.

some media just makes up crazy crap. I think this was from a crew called “Heavy” who lately have been turning up all over the place. this outfit makes KJG look like geniuses.
My fear is that the Cavs are headed to an increasingly boring basketball team, as they lose or ship out people who move without the ball and make passes. We’ll be left with a team that plays a bit better one-to-one defense but not great team D, and lots of pick and roll and iso-ball on offense.
I’m also not really convinced there is a championship window for anyone not starting Victor Wembanyama this year.
I think the ballclub is aware that they aren’t winning a chip with Spida as #1. In the meantime, they will want to be competitive, develop as much talent as they can and get that playoff cheddar. It it what it is.
I look at Wemby the way I looked at Zion. Great young players that look very likely to sustain injuries as their careers progress. Zion’s problems occurred way earlier than I thought they would. Wemby to me looks…fragile.

Wemby looks like he MIGHT POSSIBLY dominate the NBA for a decade, but there are “many a slip between cup and the lip”. he looks to be a bit of a head case so far. and even if things all go right, it will be fun to be one of the teams queueing up to try to deny him.
