Preview/Live Thread: The Finals, Game 7 (#AnythingCanHappen)
2016-06-19“When you give a team life, give a team confidence, anything can happen in a Game 7.” – Paul Pierce
Way back when the 2015-16 NBA season started… all of 235 days ago, did you imagine it would end up here? Sure, it may not have been all that difficult to predict a rematch between the Cavs and the Warriors, given that they were each the odds-on favorites to capture their respective conferences… but could you have fathomed the historic significance of this one remaining Finals contest? Even as recently as a week ago… were you one of the stalwarts who believed in your heart that the Cavaliers could somehow, someway climb out of the 3-1 hole they had dug to force this seventh and deciding game?
No matter the victor, it will be an ending for the ages. One that will be long remembered in the annals of the sport. If Golden State holds serve at home in Oracle Arena (where they went 39-2 during the season, and are 11-2 in the playoffs), they will finish off arguably the greatest season in League history, cementing their place amongst the all-time elite teams. But, if Cleveland can parlay the momentum they’ve built behind their runaway locomotive of a leader, and rip glory from the jaws of what seemed like certain defeat a week ago, they will be the ones to carve their names into basketball lore. After all, in case you maybe hadn’t heard… no team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA Finals. In fact, only two other teams had ever even forced a Game 7, and none in the last 50 years (the Knicks in 1951 and the Lakers in 1966), since before the ABA/NBA merger.
As Tom indicated in his brilliant piece yesterday… nobody really knows anything about how this will all play out. The patterns that have emerged (or haven’t as the case may be), the storylines, the history, the statistical information… none of it really matters in a Game 7. Everyone will leave everything they have on the court… from the MVPs to the X Factors… from the wiliest vet to the least used role player… to a man they will exhaust themselves in these final 48 minutes to capture a crown. There’s no next game that would require a monitoring of minutes played for guys like LeBron. There’s no next game for which guys like Draymond could be suspended. Win or lose, this is it. For one team, it’s a summer of jubilance… for the other a summer of second-guessing and might-have-beens.
So, which stars will shine brightest? Which MVP will prevail? Will the Splash Brothers break loose and throw cold water on the Cavs’ dreams of a victory parade? Or will LeBron and Kyrie continue to break down the once unbreakable Warrior D to dash the chances of a repeat? Which injury issue will loom larger… Iggy’s ailing back, or Kyrie’s banged up foot? Which missing man on offense will find his shot first, Harrison Barnes or Kevin Love? Who can push the right buttons at the right time… Steve Kerr or Ty Lue? How much of a factor will the refs be… and will Ayesha Curry break Twitter? These questions and so many more will all soon be a part of the amazing history of this game, this series and this season for the record books.
Beyond the game, there’s the question of what this will mean to the history of these two franchises, and their respective fanbases and cities.
If the Warriors find a way to finish things off on their home floor, they would effectively answer any doubters of their greatness. Their legacy would be ensured, and even those that debated the validity of their championship last year through the veil of significant injuries suffered by their opponents in literally every round of the playoffs, would have to tip their collective caps to this team. With 73 wins and a second straight championship, they would have to be considered a dynasty, and the odds-on favorites to do it again next year.
If the Cavaliers pull off the upset that many thought not just improbable, but downright impossible… the rest of the world should be put on notice for the audible roar that will be heard from downtown Cleveland. You know the numbers, so I won’t dwell on them here… but half a century of sports disappointment, bitterness and woe would evaporate in one glorious instant. LeBron James would fulfill his promise he and Lee Jenkins crafted so thoughtfully in the summer of 2014… finally bringing home a championship to Cleveland. The victory parade would not only be epic… it might require multiple days to complete.
I’m posting this early to get the conversation going, so there may still be changes to the lineups on each side. There may be multiple updates as we get closer to game time (8 pm EST), so look out for them. I’m also going to break from my habitual prediction of the winner and final score… not because I’m superstitious, but because, like so many others, I literally have no idea what’s going to happen. In the end, win or lose, I love this team and have been proud to cover it with our team at C:tB.
I will leave you with this… These teams have also had a history of playing on national holidays. Neither Christmas Day nor Martin Luther King Day worked out all that well for the Cavs. But today just happens to be Father’s Day. On a personal note… this is my first Father’s Day without my dad. He was the one who indoctrinated me into Cleveland sports, something I alternately loved and cursed him for over the years since my youth. Even though it’s been 20 years since I lived in Northeastern Ohio, not a day goes by that I don’t think about Cleveland. My dad was alive for the last Indians championship in 1948, and the last Browns title in 1964. He sadly never got to see a Cavalier championship… something I know he desperately wanted. He loved watching LeBron. He loved this team. I hope they win it for all the fathers who would love nothing more than to share a championship with their children. But, if they fall short… I will be comforted by remembering something my own father always said to me after tough losses…
“Son, it only hurts because you care. And, it’s good to care about Cleveland.”
Thanks dad. And thank you to all the fathers on this historic Father’s Day.
GO CAVS!
I want a clean youtube or vine of love on curry island
Good interview with KI on ESPN…he’s doing a good job…
How about JR opening the 3rd quarter with a few cold blooded shots? (After a first half where Cavs weren’t hitting.) It changed the momentum.
That was HUGE. It got us right back into it immediately.
For Love on Curry, NBA.com doesn’t have a direct URL up yet for the video, but click on this link, and it’s the “MISS Curry 26′ 3PT Jump Shot” play with 30 seconds left

All In 2016
Whoooooooo!!!!!
The way that game ended really was storybook. LeBron with the freakish chase down block only he could do. Kyrie with the cold blooded shot he’s been hitting his whole career. And Love, of all people, trapped on an island with Steph, playing the best defensive position of his life. Wow. I have chills.
Agreed. I played this out a hundred times… the reAL thing was better!
This this this this this this!!!!!!
Good catch. Three big plays by the big three…
Also, what a choke job by the unanimous MVP. Bad shots, airballs, careless turnovers, totally getting outplayed by the opposing point guard, constantly getting targeted on defense. Curry was EXPOSED in this series
Curry is great, but he needs to cut out those behind the back, lazy, flashy passes…this is game 7 on the finals, for god’s sake
The Warriors missed their last 9 shots.
great time to miss it too, couldn’t have been better
Wow, RJ says he’s retiring? He was so good this playoffs…
Where did you hear that? I’m flipping through channels, maybe I missed it.
What a way to go!
Twitter…trying to confirm….but apparently he said it…
He said it to Alley on FSO interview – i saw it live. He said it twice
What a way to go out, if he holds firm. At his age to be a major contributor on a championship team…
Did he? Man, that sucks if it’s true. He was huge. We would never have won without him.
11 ties, 20 lead changes… Wow!
If Draymond wasn’t smokin’ hot the Cavs would have run away with it.
Dude was on fire… and wide open…we need to work on that when we repeatnext year!
Also, we have to hand it to the refs. They called a very even game tonight. They didn’t fall for Kerr’w and Ayeesha’s whining. Good job.
Yeah, props to the refs….they didn’t really impact the game either way, thank god…
The Iggy “block” (foul) on LeBron was the one I thought, “that’s it, there goes the game”.
But the Cavs kept their composure and persevered.
They were not perfect, but they were way better than I expected them to be. Even that call you described, was really difficult to call real time.
I thought it was the best reffed game I saw this year.
My biggest home court worry…
And there’s “The Block”:
https://vine.co/v/5BuzwbphK5U
Doubt Lebron has had many bigger plays, ever….
KLove with the Austin 3:16 shirt on ESPN = awesome!!!!!
KLOve on Sportscenter right now…
So, “The Shot” means something a little different tonight…
https://vine.co/v/5Buae7rKtqM
That was reminiscent of Game 5. They made a gazillion threes in the first half, we did not flinch and we laid wood on them in the second half. I knew we would win when we tied the game in like 90 seconds into the second half.
I was terrified and not optimistic at the half, I’ll admit…
ANYONE WANT ON THE POD EMAIL ME!
the Lebron block and Kyrie 3 pointer (in Curry’s grill no less) will go down in NBA lore and Cleveland sports lore…forever..FOR-EV-ER!
Don’t forget Love’s D on Curry.
yah that too and almost everything else as well..JR getting hot to start 2nd half was huge in retrospect
Skip Bayless @RealSkipBayless :
Kyrie last 5 games: 30 in win, 34 as LeBron disappeared, 41 in win, 23 in win (tone-setting 20 in 1st half), 26 & game-winner in Game 7. MVP
Kyrie was key, must agree
Skip can’t give LeBron credit though.. first ever to lead in pts’ rebs, assts; stls;block
Skip Bayless isn’t quite fit to diagnose the Finals MVP… no LeBron, no championship…the end. Kyrie helped win it, but they do not get here if LeBron doesn’t do what he does….

MAN I WISH I COULD BE THERE!

Did Cols steAL that?!
I wonder whether we will find out Lebron’s secret motivation (from mid season).
Dave McMenamin just asked him, and Lebron wouldn’t give it up.
The basketball world is shocked! Golden State loses after being up 3-1? Unthinkable!
It’s incredible….hard to believe even though I watched it…
LeBron with all three kids (and a cigar) at the podium.

Kevin Love to Ty Lue in the middle of the madness: “I appreciate you. I appreciate you. I appreciate you.”
More than anything else, the NBA finals are about desire. The Warriors had theirs and just didn’t want it quite as badly. The Cavs wanted it. When it ended you could see from the emotion from LBJ how much he wanted it. And that was the difference.
Kyrie’s 3 was the only hoop by either team in the final 4:39 of the game. LeBron’s free throw was the only other point.
Warriors lost 9 games in the regular season. They lost 9 games in the playoffs.
Yeah, well . . . the West is so weak you know.
How about David Griffin’s moves? GM of the Year?
Really wonder if Klay’s “It’s a Man’s Game” comment lost them this series…
Love when they make this type of history
Warriors become 1st team in NBA history to win a playoff series when trailing 3-1 and lose a series when leading 3-1 in SAME postseason.
Incredible blocks by LBJ were the difference down the stretch. Wow.
HEY WE ARE RECORDING! IF YOU WANT IN SHOOT ME AN EMAIL!
KYRIE!!! MVP!!!
https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/744732362387431425
Something that will never happen again! But I’m glad it did. Beating Golden Boys much more gratifying than beating OKC.
Absolutely.
It is for sure, but we’ll have to hear about how ‘banged up’ GS was….screw them
That block by LeBron is the greatest defensive play in the history of the league. No way Jordan could have done anything like that. AT 31 FREAKING YEARS OLD
Yep. That play hasn’t been talked about yet but it was INSANE. It absolutely saved/won the game for us. On par with Kyrie’s 3 IMO.
Yes. Just amazing. Also hit the free throw with his wrist hurt.
We’ll just put this here again. I don’t think anyone will mind…

Tie game, under two minutes….how big was that??
Watching with a CLE crew here in Detroit and my 15 yr old son sat on the remote and changed the channel right as this was unfolding. We lost our minds, but exploded on the replay.
Why’s Steph not bringing his daughter out for the pressed? Come on Steph it’s Father’s Day.
Series thoughts. Barnes played himself out of a huge pay day. Tt earned every penny of his salary. Delly will see a pay day. Mozzy will find a new home. And never would have guessed that frye and Jefferson would be as valuable as they were
You think Delly is gonna get paid that much? He barely played this finals. Mo played over Delly this game!
I still think he gets a huge payday, probably from the Warriors. They are in a similar spot with him as the Cavs were with TT. Maybe not max, but just short of it.
LeBron James is the Greatest Of All Time!!!! Greatest NBA Finals performance of all time! Greatest player of all time!
How about that block by LBJ – when he pinned the ball to the backboard on a breakaway? ! ! !
One of the greatest plays of the series….and super clutch
Yup. Play of the finals right there. Un-freaking-real.
Kept the Warriors from taking the lead. Kept them stuck on 89 points, where they ended up.
https://vine.co/v/5BuzK6BMZpM
I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS!!!! CLEVELAND!!!! WE DID IT!!!! LEBRON!!!! KYRIE!!!! CAVALIERS!!!! ENJOY EVERYONE!!!!
Yes! The jubilation is unreal… so this is what it feels like to celebrate! Cleveland, enjoy! As a LeBron said, we earned this! We are champs! Break out the Laphroaig! We shook up the world!
I may be crazy, but I said it at the beginning of the season: I’d take Kyrie over Curry.
13 points in the 4th qtr at home…that’s what is hard to believe
Cols, Where the F are you?????
The one and only member who never doubted ;) :) :)
Fratello on Fox Ohio! What an awesome guy.
Curse is dead!! Thank God!!!

My wife kept asking me what I wanted for Father’s Day. Now I can have it. Cavs championship gear!
Can we hope for a Cubs and Indians World Series ?
Kyrie…MVP. See you at the parade
Juries out played the mvp. Curry let his ego get the best of him. Juries was an ice cold assassin in the paint

They are talking to Fratello now….he seems pumped
I want to hear from cols. Now is the time to remind us to relax and he knew it. I need to have cols faith. Speak to us cols.
Sorry AV!
Ah forgot about this! I vote no ring for benedict flopejao!
I wouldn’t want it any other way. Give him the ring. He deserves it. Nothing was given. Everything was earned. The way it should be.
Gilbert will get him a ring. But he won’t wear it. Let hope no cavs go to the olympics in Brazil. They have earned the rest.
COLS WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!
LONG LIVE COLS
He needs to come on the blog and share his joy
Kyrie with the shot of the game. I’m going to watch that over and over. AT LAST!
I love everyone. Cleveland!!!!
Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes. Oh man, that was so great to see LeBron’s reaction at the end. What a great game and a great victory.
I wish I could have heard ac and Fred call it
IFFFFF
Check out K Love’s beer can smash move in the locker room!!!
Best father’s day ever. Cleveland your son has brought you a championship trophy.
Oh yeah, in addition to breaking the curse, we came back from 1-3 to beat a 73-9 record breaking team!!!!
Can’t wait for curry or his wife double down on a conspiracy. The cavs did it in the most dramatic fashion

Where’s Cols?
He knew it all the time. (Oh, that’s right. Cols is LBJ.)
We should send thank you flowers to Draymond.
My fruit basket is going to Barnes and Ezeli.
Festivus came early this year
Trade Love. Trade Kyrie. Blow it up. By the way, I was in the bathroom, what did I miss?
WHERE IS COLS! SERIOUSLY
