Preview and Live Thread: Cavs at Bulls (Game 4)
2015-05-10News is that Pau Gasol will not play today after injuring his left hamstring in Game 3.  They are calling it a “strain” which means he could be back in a game or two.  The Bulls finally went to their bench in game 3 and Nikola Mirotic showed how dangerous he can be.  He scored 12 points and grabbed eight boards in just 22 minutes.  He was a game high +19.  Obviously, losing Gasol hurts the Bulls, but the “small-ball” lineup of the Bulls is dangerous if only because it features a lot of streaky outside shooting in a series that has been mostly a half-court grindfest.  I’m not sure I agree with the sentiments in these tweets that the Bulls will be “better” but they will present a different look that the Cavs need to be prepared for.

Jacob Rosen saved me some time:
Regular season and playoffs:
Cavs w/ Gasol on court: +27 in 221 mins (+5.86 per 48)
Cavs w/ Gasol on bench: -12 in 120 mins (-4.80 per 48)— Jacob L. Rosen (@JacobLRosen) May 10, 2015
The Cavs once again stand at the precipice of a chasm. Â It’s hard to see them beating the Bulls in three straight games, making this game somewhat of a “must-win”. Â However, if they split on the road they will have regained home court advantage and will be sitting pretty.
The key to the rest of the series is Kyrie Irving’s health and LeBron James’ offensive execution in the half-court. Â Both of these were severely lacking in game 3 and cost the Cavs the game (the Cavs bench played very well). Â Kyrie’s game has a chaos factor that can get buckets when nothing else is working, much like he did at times in game 1. Â Without that, the Cavs offense is predictable and relies on a lot of high screen and rolls with LeBron. Â Jimmy Butler is showing an increased acumen in defending these screens. Â He’s anticipating them and rarely getting picked. Â The Cavs “answer” to this was to have LeBron go mano-y-mano in the post. Â Unfortunately, LeBron’s been losing the handle as he tries to muscle his way into the low post.
Keep an eye out for Timofey Mozgov’s minutes in this game.  The Cavs don’t seem to trust him out there. He’s fumbled away enough passes and had his shot blocked at the rim enough to understand why the Cavs are quick to pull the plug.  Still, he offers rim protection.  The Bulls swung the momentum in their favor in the 3rd quarter of game 3 with a series of breezy dribble-drives to the hoop.
Now Mozgov played the first half of this quarter so he was partly responsible for the carnage, but he will fare better in the long run at keeping the Bulls from turning the game into a layup line for Butler and Rose. Â Keyphrase: “long run”. Â Will Blatt stick with him after a few momentum changing turnovers? Â Or will he go with James Jones and TT.
According to @ESPNStatsInfo, the Cavs are a +25 this series in the 49 mins Thompson & Mozgov shared the court. Could exploit more w/ no Pau

These teams know each other and there is some chess to be played: will Blatt try to actually “go big” to exploit the loss of Gasol (and hope the Bulls play the severely struggling Joakim Noah) or will they call in an airstrike and run James Jones for heavy stretches at the 4?
Still, this series is being defined by the play of Rose, Butler, James, and Irving. Â Going into the series, you’d have given the edge to the Cavs. Â If Kyrie’s injuries hamper him as much as they did in game 3, it’s going to take a vintage LeBron performance to advance.
Jesus, Perk.
Damn it Perkins! Catch the ball!
Canadian Dynamite! Gonna get paid.
Yeah. I wasn’t as high on him this season as a lot of people here were. But he’s found his role and I’d really bringing it. Just wish he could develop a reasonable inside game.
Didn’t realize Perkins was in the game?
Perkins w a huge bucket
Irving slow walking the Bulls to death.
Good to see Irving is being agressive despite his foot/leg. At least he’s getting calls.
Keep grinding, keep focusing on defense, any mistake- missed shot, turnover, don’t let it get to you, keep going keep playing, next play.
Great message by Blatt in the timeout.
I belive thet we will win!!!
Great second quarter defense thus far, Cavs playing well.
Irving looking more mobile than Friday. Cavs grinding out to a lead. Love it.
Wow. JFJ creating with the slow-motion drive and dish.
I did a slow-motion scream when he did it…
:)
at least kyrie is hitting free throws other than that he looks marginal
Yeah imagine how disappointed he is right now. He could run circles on them when healthy
Its so frustrating watching Kyrie hurt. He is so electrifying when he’s healthy
Really nice ball movement. Like the way they are playing now.
Huge defense in butler there and another foul on Bulls lets go cavs
Bulls in one of their classic slumps. Time to take them out.
Kyrie has to shoot the open shot.
Blatt’s three word mantra at halftime should be “PUSH THE BALL”
Dunleavy can’t defend a hobbled Irving.
More fouls on Bulls, Mozzy w 3 is bothersome
They are calling Mozgov whenever he even touches a Bull
Ugh Moz. Can’t give up that foul.
Cavs offense is just being way too deliberate… Bulls can’t stay with them if they push the tempo and score
But they’re not turning it over. I like this pace
Playing right into the Bulls hands though… Over 100, Cavs win… Under 100, Bulls win
I throw all narrative predictions out the window this game. If it’s working, milk it.
TT is a minimal.
Don’t know why LBJ doesn’t push the ball in transition
Oh my there we go cavs TT slam
Great defense and bulls look defensively challenged
Meant offensive chaleng
Smart pass from Moz to TT there!
Wow that would of been a great steal and dunk
Cavs are very fortunate these wide open 3s aren’t falling for Chicago. Kyrie’s going to need to give the Cavs something or this will be a blowout by the end.
Or at least JR with some threes…
At least guys moving without the ball and defending. They weathered the storm from the Bulls
This storm anyway… Need more intensity on defense
100% agree with Mark Jackson. Kyrie may be hurt but if he’s fit enough to be on the floor he has to be involved offensively. Otherwise give him games off.
If LBJ would just play off the ball and work in the post, he would either a) be unstoppable or b) get all of the Bulls big men in foul trouble…
I am hoping that is the second half plan if not sooner
Let’s go cavs tied it up. Noah is a bum, can’t stand the Bulls
Can’t stand Noah but no problem with Rose
Yeah he is a class act
Yeah, Noah, Hinrich and Dunleavy are the only ones I truly can’t stand…
Let’s go Cavs! Tie game.
tied up now…just re-set and start getting stops and rebounds….come on CAVS!!!
Cavs probably need to break 100 to win this game… not looking good on that front…
Like +100
Cmon Irving we need a hero game
Hey Irving made a hoop!
That’s the problem with Moz’s volleyball taps… Just get the rebound big guy!
Thanks for the call in goal tendin and what about the hold on Noah again
Lebron holds the ball too much and he dribbles the ball entirely way too much!!!!!!!!!!!
Who else in the entire NBA holds the ball 16 seconds out of a 24 second clock
Well, George, when you’re right, you’re right.
Finally call a foul on Noah.
Thanks for the bail out, Pebbles!
Noah getting called is for so many others
No offensive sets being run right now…
The one good thing that the Cavs have going is they are going to the freethrow line
Is that Le-iso what Blatt called in the timeout?
This is why Tristan doesn’t start…he’s defensively inept
This is where not having playoff experience to draw from hurts the Cavs (aside from LeBron). They need another year or two of seasoning and grit.
I hate the Bulls….
Need some bug moments from Shump and Jr here.
Cavs just not taking any advantage of Gasol being out…
Bulls are better with him out of the line up, at least for this series.
Not statistically…
cavs just getting out hustled right now team looks defeated
ankthe hold on Noah on Delly on that roll. Call it please
Its like these guys have no chemistry anymore. No one remembers how to play offense or defense.
Noah completely bear hugged Delly on that pick and roll… Geez where are the calls?
That is what is frustrating please Blatt get in the refs ear in that
Moz needs to board.
Kyrie getting really unlucky on top of being injured…
Did Noah and Rose go to the HGH clinic before the game?
Cavs are getting beat on dribble drives too much. They need to fix that.
This is frustrating!
Overhelp on Rose leads to the Mirotic three…
Delly can’t cheat that far off Rose.
Delly could have layed that up and in there…
Kyrie’s flat footed free throw looks great. Jump shot off the bum feet killing this team.
Kyrie is really hurting! Let’s hope he can give 15 at least.
Irving drawing the foul is good give Bron a rest
Moz looks a lot more aggressive this game…
