While the Cavs stole home court from the Hawks and jumped out to an early series lead after winning Game 1, 97-89, they head into Game 2 with a great deal of uncertainty regarding without Kyrie Irving due to an aching left knee. Irving missed the team’s morning shootaround, instead spending the time getting a further evaluation on his knee after treatment. The latest news had him getting another MRI on the knee, and he is listed as “questionable” now out for tonight’s game.
“This is obviously one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever dealt with,” Irving said after Game 1. “We do days and days and go out there and it’s nothing like simulating a game so for me, I just have to continue to do what I’ve been doing and do whatever is necessary to put myself out there. I’m all about winning. That’s the only thing that matters.”
Since Kyrie can’t go, LeBron, who himself is dealing with a tender right ankle after twisting it stepping on a sideline cameraman in Game 1, will be taxed with a larger share of the ball-handling duties.
“That means less touches in the paint,” James said. “If one of our ball-handlers is out, I’ve got to handle the ball more along with (Dellavedova). It changes my approach a little bit.”
According to David Blatt, Delly will likely start in Kyrie’s place at the point.
“I’ll be ready to go,” Dellavedova said. “Whatever the team needs.”
What the team may miss more than ball handling though, is the threat of Irving being on the floor, even though injured, as a decoy. No matter how hobbled he may appear, he still requires attention from defenders for his outside shooting. Even in his 27 minutes in Game 1, he chipped in 10 points on 4-10 shooting, including 2-3 from deep, as well as six assists.
Other Cavs will have to step up and help LeBron and J.R. Smith with the scoring load, and the team will look to get more output from Iman Shumpert, Delly and James Jones (who were a combined 1-16 from the floor, and 0-10 from three in Game 1).
The Hawks did not make it through Game 1 unscathed either, as Demarre Carroll, who suffered a sprained left knee and some bruising in the fourth quarter.
Initially, the injury looked much worse than it turned out to be, as he needed crutches to walk after the game on Wednesday night. However, he was back on the floor with the Hawks for shootaround and reportedly even took some shots. The Hawks are listing Carroll as a “game-time decision” for Game 2 tonight, even though his left knee was heavily wrapped, he walked with a limp, and Kent Bazemore said he expects to start in Carroll’s place. Bazemore gives up almost four inches and 50 pounds to the man he’ll be charged with guarding (LBJ), so he might have to take Paul Millsap up on his offer to help guard the King.
“It’s probably next man up for them, too,” James said. “They’ve played with injuries obviously less than we have but that’s not my concern about who is in their lineup. My concern is about who we got and who is going to be suited up for us when it’s time to get ready to go again.”
Despite the injuries on both sides, this is a critical game for both teams. Atlanta has their backs to the wall, and will be fighting hard to avoid an 0-2 deficit going to Cleveland. But, already down one of their big three and potentially missing another, the Cavs sound determined to take advantage of the opportunity to take the Hawks out as quickly as possible.
“We are just as desperate as we were in game one to win this one, as well; so we are going to come out the same way, stop their ability to make plays. We can try to slow them down; we can’t stop them. They’re a great offensive team but we just want to slow them down and do what we need to do on our end,” James said.
The running narrative with Kyrie’s injury issues has been whether or not the Cavs should just shut him down in the hopes that he can get healthier for a potential showdown with the winner of the Golden State/Houston matchup (the Warriors have a 2-0 lead in the series after a close 99-98 victory last night). However, they can’t afford to look past a still dangerous Hawks team and save Irving for a round that may never come if they don’t take care of business.
In other news, guess who’s birthday it is? Your favorite embattled “rookie” Cavs Coach, David Blatt. Ol’ Dave is 56 years young today. I imagine all the guys got together and got him something nice… or at least sang something like this…
“Happy Birth-day to you…
Just in time for Game Two…
We may not have Ky-rie…
But the bench mob will do!”
According to his interviews at shootaround today, here’s what David Blatt wanted for his birthday…
It's #Cavs HC David Blatt's birthday. This is what he would like: A win, you all to be healthy, world peace & solution to high pick-n-roll
— Chris Fedor (@ChrisFedor) May 22, 2015
Health, world peace and a solution to the high pick-n-roll might be asking too much, but let’s hope even if Kyrie can’t go, LBJ and Co. can deliver a win for their birthday coach and head home up 2-0.
What’s your prediction for Game 2?
I love that we several guards that all have the ability to go off at any time.
Shump drinkin from JR’s punch bowl
I think they told Korver to shoot more.
Thank you Shump!
If TT could shoot or finish we’d be up 20 right now.
Dude… seriously, you’re out of your mind…
Then, the law of averages say we win this game by 20!
If Kevin Love didn’t have his shoulder torn out by Olynyk he could play. #Obvious
Heh! Well done, Arch.
Shumpert for 3,thank you!! And again!!!
We want the SHUMP.
Give us the SHUMP.
We need the SHUMP.
Gotta have that SHUMP!
SHUMP!
Let Shumpert go at Korver on offense..
How does Jones get called for the foul when he was fronting Horford?
Man. Buckets are hard to come by. Thompson is single ha deadly blowing this.
Thompson sucks this game.
What the ??????????????????????????????????????????????
You’re drunk… he’s got 9 boards already…
Um, no. 9 rebounds and a block.
TT needs to get out of his head with the FTs
He’ll make the rest of them. And there will be more.
Strange to see TT missing all these free throws
Come on… Hit the free throws….
Why can’t TT hit his throws all of a sudden?
Second time TT has gotten a late foul call. Both legit, but so delayed they’re almost like the advantage rule in soccer.
Thompson is now 0-4 from the line. Sucks.
Thompson needs to freaking finish.
And hit free throws …
JAMES FREAKING DELAYED JONES
I miss Kevin Love full court passes!
Smith with the great steal and pass
Gonna have to dust off Joe Harris pretty soon…
Nuts. Thompson still can’t shoot.
The Cavs are getting a little tired…. And it is expected.
Blatt has to use his timeouts wisely to rest his players.
i dont know, atlanta just doesnt seem to have an edge
They really don’t. The let Teague shoot defense has them flummoxed. They are only staying in the game because we lack firepower.
We could really use love right now.
What the ???????????????????????????????????????
Hawks could really use Dominique Wilkins too…
Delly making things happen on the floor.
To repeat comment above: Hawks have no idea what to do with Delly.
James got fouled twice. He just doesn’t get the calls sometimes.
Delly with the STEAL
Delly letting Teague shoot.
LBJ with a nice little hook shot.
Delly will have to hit some shots for Cavs to win this. Playing well overall, but will need to score 12 to 15 points for us.
Agreed. We need to get some buckets.
I miss Kyrie Irving!
Delly trying to do too much.
Hawks have no idea what to do with Delly.
Delly knows they need to take it to the rack…
That travel on Moz — almost every player in the NBA does that every time they catch the ball on the perimeter.
8-0 for the Hawks now, sigh
Mozgov is completely lost out there right now…
We need buckets!
Cavs looking really sloppy now. Way too much penetration
Points are tough without kyrie and love.
I think the Cavs feel pretty confident attacking the rim against the Hawks.
Delly balling. Hawks playing like they can’t believe where these bench guys are coming from.
Hawks look like complete ass.
Usually I don’t complaint about the Refs but they are doing a great job of keeping the Hawks in this game.
Hawks only getting rebounds when TT is on the bench…
Already has 3 offensive rebounds
Thompson outrebounded the entire Hawks team 8-7 in the 1st Q
Cavs hanging tough even with the king out.
CAVS scoring drought!
Seems like Delly is going to play the whole game.
He might have to…
He will probably get 35-40 minutes.
Al Horford is limping around.
Webber interrupts their impression of bad talk radio to offer some love for Delly’s creating.
JR Smith doesn’t seem to hungover.
He knows he can’t live the Cols lifestyle.
Horford is limping…
Ey ey delly with the sweet move by Delly and nice putback by Shawn Marion
Hawks seem to be getting more rebounds than last game.
Thompson outrebounded the entire Hawks team 8-7 in the 1st Q
Need to shut down Bazemore…
Schroderflop…….
He should get a fine for that one…
He’s from Germany, what do you expect… They are so used to watching futbol that its second nature.
Holy (expletive). Delly post up!! L
Keep it clean Cols… ;)
Delly overpowering in the post!
It’s a Matrix sighting!!!!!
THE MATRIX… RELOADED!!!
James jones with the nice 3
Look at those VETS runnin an offense!
JAMES FREAKING JONES!!!
I’m shocked that Atlanta looks so bad. This is their season. Looks like same game plan by Cavs. Korver made some tough shots.
Same. The Celtics and Bulls were waaaaay more intense
The Hawks are shooting 38% and we are at 50%,we are out rebounding them 14-7 and getting to the line. This quarter went rally good other than the turnovers, if we keep it up we will win for sure!!!
The Matrixx …… My prediction is that he will last no more than 3 minutes on the court.
I really wanted him to have somethin left and contribute
looked a step slow on D just there
For the record, someone tell Coles that this is what NOT coming out slow looks like…
Hey! The Matrix is on the floor!
I was hoping he’d get some time! Its his last playoff run, ever. Honored to watch him play in his last.
Agreed JMay, Legend on his last leg
YES finally, I was hoping he’d have one more rodeo
I guess Bazemore needs to learn how to flop?
