Live Thread: Cavs vs. Sixers
2015-11-06Just six games into the regular season (thanks to injury and opportunity) the Cavs have apparently decided to “release the Ninja” on the Philadelphia 76ers in tonight’s matchup at the Q. According to Jason Lloyd at the Akron Beacon Journal, Jared Cunningham (aka Much Danger Ninja) reportedly appears to be in line for his first NBA start. Cunningham was wearing a red starter’s jersey during the team’s morning shoot-around, while Richard Jefferson was back in a bench player’s white jersey. Although, technically, as a ninja… MDN probably should have dressed in all black…
Jefferson started in Wednesday’s win against the Knicks, but he seemed a little out of sorts, getting off to a rough start on his way to nine points on 2-6 shooting (1-5 from three), with four boards and three assists. Most of this might be attributed to the fact that he was tasked with guarding Carmelo Anthony on the other end of the floor (which he did with some degree of success), yet it’s understandable why Coach Blatt would prefer to keep him in his usual role, given how well that’s gone so far this season.
Cunningham is averaging just 4.2 points, and shooting 50 percent from the floor, in about 10 minutes of play per game. He’s been an early sub off of the bench for Blatt, mainly because of his athleticism and his ability to defend well. Clearly, his assertiveness in limited opportunities has already paid dividends.
“I feel comfortable (in the Cavs’ system), it’s just a little bit different,” Cunningham said. “This is the first time I’ve gotten consistent minutes.”
Before finding a home with the Cavs, MDN was the very definition of an NBA journeyman. He’s been with five teams in his four years as a pro, playing in a total of 58 games with the Mavericks, Clippers, Hawks, Kings and now Cavs.
Lloyd got this quote from Cunningham fan and Mavs coach, Rick Carlisle, last month when the Cavs played Dallas in the preseason.
“He has NBA ability, there’s no doubt about it,” Carlisle said. “He has NBA skill, he just needs to find a niche. This is one of those situations where it could work out for him because he’s a terrific shooter, he’s got dynamic athleticism, he can defend and he’s playing with some great players here. He’s playing with the greatest player and oftentimes a situation like that helps guys like him stick around.”
We’ll see if MDN can help the Cavs get off to a faster start than they have in their two previous games. One thing that won’t be slowing them down are the now infamous sleeved jerseys from Wednesday’s game, as the Cavs will return to their sleeveless white uniforms for tonight’s tilt.
The Cavs will also look to continue their run on assists (they’ve averaged 25.8 per game), and of holding their opponents under 45% shooting. The Cavaliers are also limiting teams to 92.4 points per 100 possessions after allowing 104.1 in 2014-15 to rank 20th. That doesn’t bode well for the still winless Sixers squad which is averaging only 88.3 points on 39.9 percent shooting. The Cavs also finished them off on Monday, despite digging themselves a large hole to start. However, Philly has been the only team to hit the century mark against Cleveland, and with a promising front line, they can still be dangerous.
Other things to look for tonight:
- LeBron needs three made field goals to each 9,000 for his career. That would make him just 20th player in league history to reach that number.
- Tristan Thompson leads all NBA reserves in rebounds at 10.2 per game. He’s five offense rebounds shy of passing Phil Hubbard for seventh on the Cavs’ all-time list.
- Mo Williams is averaging 21.5 points on 55 percent shooting over the last two games. He should continue his hot streak against the likes of Isaiah Canaan and T.J. McConnell.
- LeBron hit just his second triple in 18 attempts on Wednesday. Will he keep firing away from deep, or work the ball inside with his post-game?
- The Cavs unleashed “The KRAKEN” against the Knicks… could we see it again tonight?
Game time is 7:30pm (EST), and the game can be seen on Fox Sports Ohio, and heard on 1100 WTAM. So, get your katanas out, Cavs fans… and get ready to flip the switch…
I don’t like how our better 3 point shooters are looking to shoot midrange 2s, I’m looking at you RJ!
Nice D, Delly cant shoot, tonight, though.
TT doing a very nice job on Okafor…
Lower center of gravity and a big butt keeps the tall guys away from the basket every time. It also helps that he’s long and a quick jumper.
HAD TO “STEP ‘ OUT FOR AWHILE —-YOU GOT ME GUTTING IT AGAIN EVIL( U THE MAN !) YES ARCH THOUGHT IT WAS ENTERTAINING ( BUT I AM EASILY AMUSED OR IS IT CONFUSED ) —-WHOEVER IS MAKING THESE HALF TIME ADJUSTMENTS —YOU ARE DOING AN OUTSTANDING JOB—GO CAVS —IT’S FRI NIGHT IN THE LAND “LET’S GET CRAZY !!”
Great D by Delly and JFJ!
Cavs keep the pressure on and LBJ won’t have to play in the fourth…
The Ninja has not scored… still he’s a team high +24…
Uh . . . is he on the starting unit?
Yep… didn’t you read my Live Thread intro?
LeBron with 18 in the quarter?
Yep… looking royal…
I knew that heat check was coming lol, Lebron made 3 3’s this quarter, more than the whole season, he was 2-18 before tonight
Whoa Delly!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nerlens with big block on Bron…
Noel is 30 pounds away from being a nightmare.
30 pounds he will never gain…
He’ll fill out. Ibaka did.
He started at 202… hard to build on that kind of frame…
LBJ en fuego. Heat check brick stops the run.
Damn it’s good to see LeBron draining those 3s
The heat check three just off…
I guess LeBron figured his shot out.
Noel looks sharp tonight. Can you imagine how promising things would be for Minny if we’d drafted Nerlens?
I like this Philadelphia team. Give them a veteran all star PG and they’d be tough.
They can’t have Delly.
KING IS FEELING IT FROM THREE!!!
Mo has looked great!
Mo is shooting like he did the night he scored 52.
GIVE ME MO!!!
I dub the mo->klove pass ‘the dolphin’
Doesn’t sound dangerous enough… ;)
Mo with The Kraken to KLove!!
Remember when the only person we could run the kraken for was LBJ?
LeBron has his shot back.
He just has to shoot his way out of it. The worst thing he can do is stop shooting it. He just has to be smart about when he takes them until it’s all the way back.
JAmes feeling he self now with another 3 lol
From the 330!!!
James with the pull up 3
There’s a THREE for the King!
MDN looks just a little lost and borderline annoyed on offense. Weird body language. Almost literally tapping his foot.
Not much for him to do but defend in this lineup…
LeBron going full-Dion by shouting “and-1” on that turnaround…
Mo Gotti’s mid-ranger is in mid-season form….
That shot looked pure from LBJ….
FIRE DAVID BLATT. KEVIN LOVE DOESN’T FIT IN.
Lebron with a very non-ball-dominant 13 pts and 7 assists. They’ve all been beautiful, acrobatic, and easy.
Stay off the ball, Lebron!
You can’t stop LBJ… you can only hope to contain him!
Cavs starting strong with a nice 7-0 run in 1 minute and a half
Cavs getting serious coming out in the second half…
Love that Mo Gotti theme!!!
Cavs are having a “playing down to the competition” week.
Sixers shooting 55%… Cavs with 13 turnovers… pretty easy formula for a halftime deficit…
I saw Sicario a few weeks ago and it was SICCCCCCCCCCario!!!!
JUST SAW THE MOVIE “THE MARTIAN ‘ SO I”LL PICK MARS AND GO PARTY WIHT MATT DAMON
Was it a good flick Nomad?
I’m assuming he was the author of a book that was made into a Matt Damon movie?
No… just the only book about Mars that had “NOMAD” in the title…
Delly is having a very non-Steve Nash game. Cols is drinking his milk.
Quinn Cook interview with Alley at the half…
Glad he’s still in the organization. I like that kid.
SIXERS HUNGRY FOR WIN # 1 —DANGEROUS TEAM RIGHT NOW !!
If you had $82 million would you rather go to Mars or Uranus?
Delly having a very un-Delly-like game… 1-6 no assists and a turnover… -9
Love & Delly shooting very bad. Delly really having a bad game on every front. All 76ers are scoring.
I miss Kyrie. He’s my dude.
Sixers giving the Cavs a taste of their own medicine with the oops at the rim…
Yep. good for them. And good for us. A little humility goes a long way in the drive to be great.
Sixers always play the Cavs tough. They aren’t very good, but I got to give them credit for making it tough on the Cavs. If they can beat the Warriors I will feel even better.
Their youth and vigor usually bites us a few times per game. Our skill usually prevail.
Cavs settling for outside shots in the latter stages of this quarter…
Delly forgot how tall Nerlens is…
C’mon Cavs! Get it together!
Have the Cavs tried a traditional back him down in the post play this game? LeBron or Love should be able to destroy whoever is guarding them.
They’re getting caught up in running up and down with Philly…
Love has a bit. But they’re working on their offense. They don’t need to manufacture points.
Delly not having a great game.
Delly’s 3 is bad this year
It hasn’t been. Looks off this game, but he’d been looking better….
No its not. Its fine.
Cavs with a lot of turnovers on forced passes inside…
What a lucky bounce for Grant…
Grant and Joe Harris in a boat – who do you throw overboard? Only one.
Grant… even though I’m down on Joe, he’s still a Cav (for now)
@DerekBodnerNBA: On the plus side, Okafor’s getting a lot of good looks offensively. Eventually this will drop. Could have a big second half.
Uh, Yeaaah. No.
Ouch… painful fall for Delly…
Blew a tire………
MO! What an unselfish backwards dish!
Was that the 1st time Lebron, Mo & Andy were on the floor together? Pretty cool to see.
Nice flashback!
GREAT feed inside from Mo to Moz! Basket and the harm!
KLOVE… DESTRUCTION!!!
After LBJ’s dunk…
ONLY A MATTER OF TIME THAT LOVE NAILS THAT CORNER SHOT CONSISTEMTLY —–THEN LOOK OUT !
The great flop artist strikes again lol. Well done andy
Now THAT’S how you take a charge!
