Live Thread: Cavaliers @ Blazers
2015-12-26The Cavaliers look to get back into the win column against a fading Blazers squad. After watching Christmas Day jumpers continually clank off the rim in Oracle Arena, the Cavs assume the law of averages will balance things out in Portland. It’s hard to imagine a repeat performance from behind the arc. If shots fall for Cleveland, it will be bad news for Terry Stotts.
Despite featuring one of the highest scoring backcourts in the NBA, the Blazers have struggled to win games. C.J. McCollum has developed quickly into a deadly offensive player. The third year guard is playing 20 minutes more per game than he did last season. In his 35 minutes, McCollum is hitting 40% of his threes en route to a cool 20.1 ppg.
Though he works hard, he is undersized for a shooting guard. Combined with Damien Lillard, this is the worst defensive backcourt in the Association. Lillard continues to be Steph Curry Lite on the offensive end and Mo Williams Lite on the defensive end. To put it bluntly, Lillard is an abject travesty on that end of the floor. DRPM hates him. To be fair, poor defensive teams drag down DRPM numbers, but Lillard has been consistently awful throughout his career. (note: How is Wiggins so low on that list? There is some ammo for the Wiggins haters.)
Terry Stotts continues to baffle the NBA by bringing Ed Davis off the bench. I understand the desire to get Noah Vonleh some meaningful minutes, but wouldn’t it be more reasonable to let Vonleh compete against backups? Davis has been the Blazers’ best big man by a mile. Pairing Davis and Mason Plumlee can crowd the paint, but it still doesn’t make a lot of sense to throw Vonleh to the wolves. Meyers Leonard hasn’t helped Stotts space the floor as he has been a catastrophe for Portland this season. He was my dark horse for MIP this season. His 25% shooting from deep isn’t about to win him any awards.
Kyrie Irving seems to enjoy his battle with Lillard. Here’s hoping Uncle Drew starts to “get buckets”. Some pickup ballers put up more resistance than Lillard. Now is the time.
[Editor’s Note: Due to the time difference (middle of the night in Europe) Ben had to write this early and schedule it to run later, and was likely asleep before it was officially reported that both Kyrie (scheduled rest) and Damien Lillard (plantar fasciitis) will miss tonight’s game. Please adjust your expectations and wagering accordingly.]
Blazers are only a .500 team at home.
We seriously are losing by 30+ to basically CJ McCollum and Allen Crabbe..
This starts with Lebron imo. Lebron you f**king broke jumper!!!!!!
Okay guys… I’ve seen enough… let’s hope they can get their mojo back in Phoenix on Monday…
I don’t know if it’s good or bad that Phoenix is gonna lose to Philly.
Three step drive by Aminu.
Plumlee with the dagger and-one…
F**k this restrictions $h*t. That’s why I don’t like losing the first night of a back to back.
2 weird shot attempts from JR and LeBron’s reactions was a bit awkward too.
Blazers already have 30 points in the paint… Cavs with just 12
Kevin Love’s D is ass. Cavs are chucking.
Yeah, he got completely turned around on that McCollum give and go…
Crabbe is LIFING it tonight…
Wow… giving up a wide open three to Aminu probably not a good plan to start….
Just sit back and enjoy what is about to happen folks. The past is the past. When
I agree with Austin Carr these back to back game situations are becoming an issue for the Cavs. They need to improve their approach to these type of games and be more pro about them.
I’m not too concerned if this is true, because when the real season starts, there are no back to backs.
What did we do to deserve this..
Clearly we didn’t air enough grievances during Festivus…
Follow Cleveland sports teams for starters.
They put all their eggs in the GS basket…
Offensively it’s on Lebron to stop hijacking the ball. Let the point guard initiate the offense, and when you do get it stop holding it and jab stepping the shot clock away.
Late to the party , just got through watching the game back – ugh what a waste of time, but your comment I totally agree with. Hard to know, but I think the return of the Lebron hijacking / jabstepping is an area that Blatt needs to take control of. I suspect Blatt lets Lebron lead and initiate whenever he wants (or as he says “senses the moment”), but it needs to be shut down from the coach when it’s clear it’s hurting the team.
What the what. Just got home and looked the score and I’m still not sure I’m seeing it right…
This could very easily snowball into a winless road trip if this keeps up…
I think it’s a ridiculous effort so far, but only one game. Phoenix is struggling and Denver is meh, so we should win both.
Not shooting 30% they won’t…
There’s an entire half to play. I fully expect us to come back and at least make it close
Would love to agree with you Scotch, but they just don’t look like they have it tonight…
I wouldn’t even be happy even if we get the win tonight
You are definitely a half-full kinda guy then.
The only thing keeping me up is the slim possibility that Delly takes matters into his own hands
I don’t think even the Wombat can pull them out of this hole…
The Cavs need to play better on their road games. Can’t win a championship playing like these. Is just frustrating.
Thing is… even if they were shooting 50% instead of 30%, they’d still be losing because the defense is terrible…
Without an electric Kyrie, this offense struggles mightily.
Even Cols can’t defend this…
Stop with the panic!! Lebron is awesome!! Cavs are the best! /cols
Well played MikeO…
This seems like LeBron’s BS again: that passive aggressive stuff that leaves everyone else wondering what to do.
I think it’s more of a team effort tonight.
Did you see Blatt after the game last night? He seemed bewildered.
Austin Carr @MrCavalier34 2m2 minutes ago Portland, OR
Wow have we become fragile that we can’t play back to back anymore. I understand not shooting well, that happens, but the defense is sad
Pathetic. Pathetic. Pathetic. Time to trade Love for Allen Crabbe.
Hell Love is our whole offense. 10 points and 5 rebounds, shooting 50%.
And no Lillard!!
The subtitle of the recap should be… (or, NO DEFENSE)
How about a travel call on Aminu? jeeez
Prove me wrong Moz! Get after it!
T on Leonard! Portland frustration building! Got ’em on the ropes!
So BAsically Blazers cant miss from 3 now ? WTH Im seeing
New goal: Can they keep from getting doubled up?
Is Allan Crabbe on the All Star Ballot?
I wonder if thats the first cut from the game from da Cavs ? Sigh
I really would love to see Love just take that shot more often… he even almost passed it off again but had to shoot because of the clock…
Yeah, sometimes he gives up on it too quickly. And he doesn’t shoot the step-in well.
Just pack and come home.
They still gotta go to Phoenix and Denver…
26 points in the paint from the Blazers that’s way too much.
Shoddy refereeing not helping the cause either…
Blazers have 0 turnovers to the Cavs 10
Blazers have 16 points off our turnovers
Even Allie checked out of this one.
Its literally a layup drill right now. Portland has 26 points in the paint (out of 51), 5-10 from 3 for 15 points, so we basically they have only 6 points from the midrange, wow.. 4 points from the line for Blazers
Motion… Passing… A made shot!
I keep thinking that maybe this is some kind of weird challenge where the Cavs try and go for the record for biggest comeback in a game… but then I realize that they just don’t give a (bleep)… except for Delly…
Whew…this will be one heck of a comeback
Lebron needs a two week vacation……………….hmmmm
Terrible team defense and a terrible game offensively from Lebron so far. Put in the subs time.
Rim protection has really become an issue. I’m afraid this game is over already.
I waited untill 11PM to watch this non effort by da Cavs ? WOW disappointed
LeBron’s leadership is questionable here. You’d think they’d be taking the loss out on the blazers not feeling sorry for themselves.
Please sit everyone. Or just stay in the lockerroom at the half. Please.
Every single thing Lebron is doing is just …………………what
Portland is getting whatever they want and Cavs are just fighting to get some kinda open look.
Cavs effort allowing Ed Davis to flex like he’s Draymond Green… smh…
We stink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lebron……….what ………….. just what……
So Portland comes back with a 7-0 to go back up 23 , sigh
What I really like about Delly is that he doesn’t overthink he just shoots and that’s what most of the Cavs players need to do. They need to stop over thinking and just take the shot as long as it is a good one.
He used to be very hesitant last season and I remember LeBron would encourage him to “Just shoot it Delly!” He really has taken off with that and is reaping the benefits this season
How do you leave Leonard that wide open?
Delly is the one rotation guy left who’s still playing for a contract… apparently Timo has given up on that…
This team would be struggling this year without Delly. No joke.
Struggling more you mean.
They are still 18-8 and leading the EC… don’t go overboard taximike… ;)
Well, probably 18-9 after this debacle…
Just meant the struggling they even go through in their wins, like vs Philly and Portland game in Cleveland. Winning ugly.
Very small lineup out there. Delly, of course, carrying the Cavs on his back… Typical…
Delly = MVP
Some signs of life showing up finally.
Delly is makign it happen: a defensive play, a couple of threes, and a dish to LeBron.
Delly is the man.
Wow 3 stops in a row, im shocked
DELLY! (gotta shout on the second one)
Delly with a little help caused that miss by the big, whoever it was.
Anytime Delly makes a shot he always pressures the ball on the inbounds, lets gets some stops now
