Live Thread: Cavs vs. Lakers (#TheBigShortage)
2016-12-17On Sustainability Awareness Night at the Q, the Cavs will get their first idea of whether or not their big man situation is sustainable. With the season (career?) ending ACL injury to backup paint patroller Chris “Birdman” Andersen, the Cavaliers are now about as thin at the five as they are at the one. Sure, they’ve got plenty of options given the small-ball lineups they can run with, and there’s still decent rotation of big bodies (TT, CFrye and KLove in a pinch) they can throw out there. Fortunately, they also have the NBA equivalent of a Swiss Army knife in LeBron James who can play the five just as well as the one (and everything in between), serving as the ultimate safety net. Still, the team’s adventures with backup PG experiments will likely now also extend to backup C scenarios until David Griffin can devise another alternative.
Speaking of big men, their opponent tonight features an old familiar face at the five… the Russian Bear, Timofey Mozgov. The former Cavs center returns to Cleveland with his new team, the Los Angeles Lakers, and is having a decent year for the purple and gold averaging 8.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in 21.6 minutes per game. Before the game, the Cavs will take a special moment to award Mozzy his NBA Championship ring for his contributions to last year’s team. Ty Lue, for one, sounds like he misses having the big fella around…
“He’s one of my favorite guys,” Tyronn Lue said following Friday’s team practice. “For a guy to be a starter and play such a big role and have an impact on our team the way he did two years ago and then in the playoffs last year not being able to play, but he was the first guy off the bench cheering, running onto the floor, jumping up and down when guys hit threes, you just love to have guys on your team like that. We miss him around here.”
Other familiar faces with the Lakers are former Herculoid (and interim Golden State head coach) Luke Walton, and local product (and son of legendary Cav Larry Nance) Larry Nance, Jr. Walton has the Lakers back in the realm of respectability this season, and even got them out to a 10-10 start before struggling through an eight game losing streak. They turned things around last night against the Sixers, but that might make for some weary legs in a back-to-back against an extremely well rested Cavs team (looking at you Kyrie). Nance Jr. has also found a resurgence in his game of late, now that he’s healthy. He had 11 boards against Philly last night, and had possibly the dunk of the year so far in his previous game against the Nets…

As mentioned, the Cavs should be incredibly ready for this game. They haven’t played since Wednesday, but LeBron James and Kevin Love haven’t since Tuesday. And, Kyrie has had an entire week off (practice notwithstanding), having not played since the win over Charlotte last Saturday. Despite the loss of Birdman in practice, the Cavs will have their full complement of other players available. It’s possible in the short term that the team could call up C Eric Moreland from the Canton Charge, especially on the heels of the block party he threw last night against the 87ers…
The Cavs have won their last four meetings with the Lakers (every game in the LeBron 2.0 era), and this will be the first time they’ll be seeing them in the post-Kobe era. One thing to watch for is whether LBJ will vault past Moses Malone into 8th place on the NBA’s all time scoring list. He needs 28 more points to do so.
Probable starting lineup for the Cavs: Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson. And for the Lakers: D’Angelo Russell, Nick Young, Luol Deng, Julius Randle, Timofey Mozgov.
Prediction: The rested Cavs get up big on the weary Lakers and roll 117-105.

I was impressed on how much better these young Lakers are under Walton. They were a disaster last year. They can shoot it without a doubt. It’ll take more time for them to get serious on learning defense. There was a story about 2 wks ago where there was a team mate that made a spectacular play & Russel Deangelo just walked off the court. Luke got right in front of his face & told him in no uncertain terms to go high five his team mate. I liked it. He wants that chemistry

They got it done after a lethargic start and moved the ball pretty well, albeit against a terrible defense. Several easy dunks/layups off cuts.
Timo just crashed the RJ post game interview and showed off his ring… love it!
I like to see that!!!
This is kind of awesome…

THANKS EVIL FOR THE YOUNGSTOWN PLAY —WOW !!!—AND YES WALTON WILL WIN COACH OF THE YEAR SOMEDAY—-BETTER THAN THAT COACH IN BOSTON THAT EVERYONE HAS DECLARED A HOF COACH ALREADY
I am not a member of the Stevens fan club either. What was EG’s meme? Stop, score, stop. Now that’s coaching
Oh… you mean… this guy?
He needs a Mohawk to be Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. “You talkin’ to me.”
Walton? Pft Heck Yeah he will! It is certain. He has that Laker pedigree. AS long as they keep improving, Brad will only be a memory.
Luke Walton is going to be a good coach for a long time in this league…
YOU GOT IT PHIL ( 23 ASSISTS ) —COLS HAS TO BE GOING CRAZY —BET IT WON’Y BE A SOBER NIGHT FOR THE COLS —CONGRATS !!
WOW!

I went to YSU a LONG time ago! WE were watching this game and going insane! It was a very exciting game! That TD catch behind the back with 1 arm has to be the best this year! For a moment we thought it was intercepted and then our minds exploded when we seen the ref throw up his arm signaling TD. WE were like , “okay what the hell just happen , how can this be” and jumping up and down yelling. So fun!
I had a Chris Tucker moment from a Jackie Chan movie, “I don’t understand the words coming out of my mouth” LoL I just couldn’t believe finally they really did win.
Cavs outscore the Lakers 11-3 over the last 2:30
Tough night for Moz. 2 pts and 4 boards in 15 mins. Some embarrassing misses at the rim.
He just still looks a step slow… especially against the Cavs non-traditional centers…
TOLD YOU LEBRON WOULD GET HEALTHY AT HALF AND COME OUT IN ‘ BEAST MODE “
Halftime belly purge…
YOU THINK DUNLEAVY TOO—-GOING TO MOVE TO AQUIRE A BIG ?
Just meant that Dunleavy didn’t see the floor either…
He might have been sick… but he finished strong…

WTF—-MAMBA —-MUST BE HIS FAREWELLTOUR / GAME
Him and Dunleavy…
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted…
I wonder how many points would LeBron had at this point of his career if let’s say he were an 80% ft shooter.
I wonder how many assists he would have if the first seven years of his career weren’t spent with Larry Highes, Donyell Marshall and Wally What’s His Name
You are right. Good point.
480 or 479. Rounded or not.
If nobody else scores… this will hit my pre game prediction…
You are Carnac The Magnificent
I should go to Vegas…
I had it 120-105 Cavs… I’m almost there.
KLove! Strong under the hoop!

That’s probably the game… Swaggy’s three rims out and LBJ sinks one on the other end… 6 point swing…
Williams with the same move and Shumps falls for it again lol.
At least it wasn’t shooting… or in the penalty
That Swaggy P three couldn’t have been more open on that last one…
Please don’t lose to this scrubs. It feels the Cavs are giving too many chances to this young lakers team.
Although the Lakers are the best at throwing the ball away…
Both teams have hit 14 threes…
The way the Lakers are shooting, it is good we only have 7 turnovers
Yeah, if they could play any defense, they’d be good…
Kyrie can’t stay in front of Clarkson…
LBJ could still feasibly end up with a triple double… 18/9/6
Man… I love RJ
LeBron is having a layup drill right now. That Clarkson kid is a stud.
He should probably be starting over D’Angelo…
Agreed.
LeBron has lost the handle more tonight than in a long time
LBJ making course corrections…
SHUMP! Back to the good form!
Such a weird uncoordinated night for LBJ
That was a healthy drive by the King…
https://twitter.com/CavsNationNet/status/810308018080358400
Wonder when that has happened last?
Maybe not that long ago, since TT gets a lot of double doubles too…
Hopefully LBJ can get 2 assists… join the crowd!
LBJ for THREE!
Deng playing like Danny Ferry in the building or something…
Deep Frye!
LOOKING AT THE BOX SCORE ( REALLY LIKE THE MOZ –AND WITH BIRDMANS INJURY / COULD USE HIM ) BUT SO GLAD WE DIDN’T GIVE HIM ALL THAT MONEY
Yeah… you’re lucky you didn’t see him get blocked by the rim twice… poor Mozzy…
ROCKETS LOSE BY 3 –QUSTIONABLE DECISION BY THEIR COACH —-SOUNDS LIKE CAVS HAVE COME OUT THIS HALF WITH A PURPOSE
FYI…
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/810306706945282052
Man, they went right at Lig (who just checked in) on that Deng inbounds… Walton is a smart coach…
Dance on em young fella!
Only thing Cavs aren’t really doing is closing out on three point shooters…
Probably scouting report related? LAL not a fantastic 3pt shooting team… one website has them ranked 20th.
Although Swaggy P and Lou Williams shoot a lot of them…
True dat.
Love looks better right now than he did in Minny. Not talking numbers — more around his comfort and creativity.
He’s a basketball intellectual… finally playing among his kind.
Kyrie has half of the Cavs’ 24 assists…. that’s tasty…
https://twitter.com/CavsJoeG/status/810305474541322240
Only 2 TOs for Kyrie… stellar!

The Big Three should all be at the All Star game. KLove so good
They should be starting.
Swaggy P with 5 fouls now…
Kevin Love with the And One!
KLOVE seems truly back to Minny numbers.
BALL MOVEMENT! Awesome!
Lakers fans probably need to start their own website… http://www.pleasestopdribblingJulius.com
Couple of rough missed dunks from Mozzy…
Too many beers at the Brew Pub
LOL…. Yup!!! You know he probably can drink there for free for life… eating not so much…
There you go Bron!
Swaggy P is on tonight….
I can’t remember the last time the Cavs had 73 points this early in a game with only 5 from LBJ…
They’ve really improved so much… Crazy how much a championship changes your confidence.
JR and Love — when they’re hot from outside, you might as well go home. And this is with LeBron looking like he got the damn flu
Poor Mozzy… just got stuffed big time…
Another one! Kyrie up to 10 assists now…
KLove for three!
SWISHH!
BEEN WATCHING TOLEDO/ APP.ST . FOOTBALL GAME —GREAT GAME —–LOOKED AT CAVS BOX SCORE —LEBRON MUST BE UNDER THE WEATHER / KYRIE WITH HIS ” WESTBROOK ‘ IMITATION /– CAVS CAN’T HANDLE LAKERS ” YOUNG GUNS ” —LIGS WITH ONLY 3 MIN RUN / NO KSHRIMP / NO DUNLEAVY / NO EXCUSE TO LOSE THIS GAME —–GOING TO BET LEBRON GETS HEALTHY AT HALF AND RETURNS TO ” BEAST MODE ” LEBRON—BACK TO THE ROCKETS !
Another random question EG (and anyone else) you watching The Man in the High Castle? Thumbs up/down?
Loved the first season… three episodes into the second and I’m confused…
Interesting… liked the 1st season. Loving the 2nd season 5 episodes in… I’ve got some theories but I don’t wanna spoil it.
Stephen Root took me out of it… poor casting choice IMHO because he’s too recognizable from other roles…
Office Space??? LMAO!!!
Exactly
