Live Thread: Suns @ Cavs
2017-01-19Fresh of a six-game road trip that ended with a complete thrashing at the hand of the Golden State Warriors, the Cleveland Cavaliers return to Quicken Loans Arena tonight for their second meeting of the season against the Phoenix Suns. With a 4-4 record over their last eight games, the Cavaliers have been struggling a bit, but a return home, combined with some practice time and a game against a Suns team that will likely finish fairly high in the lottery seem like the kinds of medicine that help these problems.
The Suns currently sport the third-worst record in the NBA behind the Brooklyn Nets and Miami Heat, but are an older team than one might expect. Besides Eric Bledsoe—already 27 years old and with an extensive injury history—the Suns are paying big money to veterans Tyson Chandler, Jared Dudley, P.J. Tucker, and Leandro Barbosa, four solid players who would all be better off playing a bench role on a contender. Plus there’s Brandon Knight, currently in the second year of a five-year $70 million contract, and arguably one of the worst rotation players in the league this season. While they do have some intriguing young players in Devin Booker and T.J. Warren, the Suns would be best off fully embracing a rebuild if they want to return to NBA relevance any time soon.
To be honest, the Cavaliers can use a game like this tonight. They haven’t been playing well lately, and have several issues they need to work out. Their assists are down to just 16.3 per game in January after being over 22 in the previous two-plus months of the season. Meanwhile, they are turning the ball over 14.5 times per game in new year, which is over a turnover per game more than they’ve had in any previous month. They’re on their third starting shooting guard of the season in Iman Shumpert, and are adjusting to the addition of Kyle Korver, a dead-eye shooter who flourishes in offensive sets that the Cavaliers don’t typically use. Meanwhile, Kevin Love is dealing with back issues that will keep him out of tonight’s game, and the team still has just 13 healthy players on the roster.
As bad as all that sounds, the NBA season is a marathon, not a sprint. The Cavs have plenty of time to fix their game and put themselves in the best position possible to defend their title. That marathon continues this evening against the Suns. Be sure to tune in to Fox Sports Ohio at 7:00, and be sure to stop by and share your thoughts here at Cavs: The Blog!
HAIRPLUGS JAMES and his flopping antics are an embarrasment to our already embarrassing trash city. #TRADE HAIRPLUGSJAMES
Nate we need a review of your 3 beers in the recap
Get the Blood Orange Anderson Valley Gose. Love that one.
Had to post this from a Phoenix site, the JFJ thing is real!
“We’re getting killed by James Jones.
James f@cking Jones.
Posted by jack’s complete lack of surprise on Jan 19, 2017 | 5:29 PM”
Edited the profanity.
Nice win.
Anyway so the ASG starters are in. There’s a lot of controversies as usual. Great to see Kyrie and Bron there, but Love lost the starting spot in where he could be there with the Alphabet. Now he’s hinging on coaches vote. Really hopefull he gets in even if he only plays spot minutes. This would just add more confidence for him to be back on being a legitimate AS. Really want to see our trio to play their first together.
It would be nice if the Cavs could get 20+ assists against the Spurs next game.
It seems to me that when the Cavs go against the top teams in the league (Spurs or Warriors) the game turns into ISO’s all night.
But is it caused by their defense or it’s just that the Cavs stop trusting each other when they face some adversity? We will see.
Toronto averages almost no assists. And have the 2nd best offense in the NBA. Assists are not necessary.
They really are when you are set up like the Cavs, who mostly rely on getting open threes. Usually aren’t getting open threes without assists.
Cols, you should become the spokesman for the 2 + 2 = 5 society. Just keep posting on it and see how many followers you pick up!
KORVER STILL GETTING ACCLIMATED —-SHUMP IF HE CAN CONTINUE WITH CONSISTENT OUTSIDE SHOOTING ( PLAY WITHIN HIMSELF ) —-GET OTHER PLAYERS HEALTHY —-YEAH I DON’T SEE US BEING A TOP NOTCH DEFENSIVE TEAM –BUT IF WE HOLD TEAMS TO 95 OR BELOW –AM BETTING WE WIN MOST OF THE GAMES
IMO the Cavs are good enough offensively speaking to compete against any team in the league when they share the ball. If they can get their points allowed average to go down to 95 at least that’s when they are really going to be feared.
WITHOUT GASOL IT APPEARS —-STILL THINK WE NEED TO SEARCH FOR BACK UP BIG —CHANDLER LOOKED LIKE AN ALL STAR TONIGHT
Hope Love is OK to go for SA. 30-11 at halfway, same as last year. But totally different.
Yes. Nice win. Spurs on Saturday. Should be fun.
Can’t wait for that one.
WE WERE ONLY 5 PTS SHY ( SHUMP WITH 17 —-FRYE WITH 18 ) OF HAVING 4 PLAYERS WITH 20 PTS —-LIKE COLS SAYS —-” EVERYTHING IS AWESOME “
James want that 1 reb
Cigar time. Shirmp + McRae.
AGAIN IF THERE WAS ANY CHANCE ( WHICH I DOUBT –BUT YOU NEVER UNDERESTIMATE GRIFF ) OF GETTING CHANDLER I WOULD BE HAPPY ——WOULD EVEN STOP MY PUSH FOR ” MY MAN MORELAND “
the $13 million salary *might* be a problem. Keepthe faith for Moreland – ya never know!
Shump, Frye, and JFJ were awesome tonight. Ball & player movement returned (28 dimes). James (8-12) attacking the rack & some nasty dunks. Kyrie 10-20.
LBJ. Left hand rim rattler.
Love to see James get 1 more off the glass. Great game.
LIGGINS JUST NEEDS TO LET IT FLY FROM THE CORNER —-DON’T THINK ABOUT IT
Is that gose any good? When done right they are yummy. But hard to get dialed in, IMO
Tyson killing us. Frye hits a 3.
Frye had 8 rebs. He could get a double double. Would that be a Cav first for him?
NEW BELGIUM / LIMITED EDITION—-” ACCUMULATION—-WHITE INDIA PALE ALE”—-HAD MORE THAN ONE —PASSING IS A THING OF BEAUTY ——THE ONLY THING MORE BEAUTIFUL —YOU GUESSED IT —“THE MRS NOMAD “
That’s a good one to drink.
Korver still not dialed in all the way. Team high +16 with 3 made triples. We are getting there.
+1. Korver again has 5 boards and 2 steals. We will take that every game
I’d say that slam was more Dominique than MJ. Reverse double clutch with authority. Off one foot instead of two.
Nomad what did you drink tonight?
Rhinegeist Truth IPA
Southern Tier Raspberry White
Anderson Valley Blood Orange Gose
Oh shit… this is one of my favorites!
LBJ is pissed about something.
Cavs are happy to be home.
2 ASSISTS AWAY FROM THE ” MAGICAL 23 “
HEY I HAVE A TWIN
Has there ever been a player with more gears than LeBron?
Ha. No
JORDANESQUE REVERSE DUNK FROM THE KING!
Why is Cols still obsessed with Delly?
Too many beers. Delly averages 27 minutes and the esteemed Cols says he is glued to the bench
I do not know.
You can’t use per 36. One guy is glued to the bench. All those mislead people who voted Delly more assist than Irving.
JORDANESQUE REVERSE DUNK FROM THE KING!
As opposed to using totals for 2 guys that play diffrent minutes? You have zero cred in this area. Delly isn’t glued to the pine, he plays 26.7 mpg. You can’t type two sentences without saying something false or misleading.
Liggins need to let that three go. Still up 13. James did not score in the 3rd. I’d expect that to change.
I can definitely see the Cavs letting this team hang in it the rest of the way…
I’m gonna start calling him “Channing Fryed.”
Make it 12. I hate that call, though it was correct. I was going to say the Ky, Shump, Korver, RJ, Frye 5 made a nice push. Still had a good look that Ky missed.
Offensive glass: Suns 11, Cavs 2.
Layup line & FTs for the Suns. Lead to 11.
Has Korver ever won the 3PT contest? I know we have 3 winners (Champ, Love, Kyrie).
no but crazy that those 3 won three in a row
We are -9 this quarter. Champ for 3!
They are killing us inside.
Shumpert must’ve read David’s article!
FWIW:
Kyrie assists/36 = 5.8; A/TO = 2.07
Delly assists/36 = 7.3; A/TO = 3.00
Spot on Cols, spot on.
Shump with a 3. Gonna get 6 with 10 plus tonight: James, Kyrie, Frye, Jones, & Shump are there.
SHUMP IS ON FIRE !!
Juwan Iman!
THIS IS MORE FRUSTRATING THAN GETTING BLOWN OUT THE OTHER NIGHT—LETTING INFERIOR TEAMS BACK IN THE GAME ON YOUR HOME COURT—–WHERE IS THE KILLER INSTINCT
This is looking similar.
TT out there at least. Scores with the Badfinger.
TT is a really solid finisher.
LBJ looking like LeBron Yoder.
Elder James always happy to assist (wrong religion)
Kyrie still averaging way more assists than the guy who just lost his job to a 2nd rounder and is shooting 32%. Delly
Way more minutes and with a team loaded with shooters. Cavs getting a tad lazy. As lazy as Cols’ analysis.
Jason, I would go beyond lazy and say Cols’ analysis is fraudulent
Good word.
You’re right. Does it make you feel good to revel in someone else’s misfortune?
Wrong as usual: 5.6 vs 5.4……..but I guess .2 is way more in your world view
Whoa…the Cavs PA announcer speaks with a completely different voice in real life as the Monsters hype guy….
