Live Thread: 2017 NBA All Star Game (#Rivals)
2017-02-19LeBron James may see no rivals when he takes the court tonight for the 66th Annual NBA All Star Game (his record-tying 13th straight All Star Game start equalling the great Bob Cousy), but that doesn’t mean the other 23 players participating share that opinion. After all, there will be an equal number of Cavaliers (with James and Kyrie Irving) in the East starting lineup as there are Golden State Warriors in the West (Kevin Durant and Steph Curry)… not to mention another two Warriors in reserve with Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. While KD and Steph have been less vocal about the rivalry they share with LBJ’s team, Green has been outspoken in referring to Bron’s assessment as no less than bovine excrement.
It won’t be quite the same though, since the third member of Cleveland’s All Star triumvirate (Kevin Love) will be missing in action for this year’s game. His replacement (Carmelo Anthony), however, presents a whole other source of rivalry for the media to debate (as in who would be the better fit at forward next to the King going forward). There are also plenty of representatives from other Eastern teams who are all vying to be the next great rivalry for the Cavs. DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry will show out for the Toronto Raptors who hope for a shot at redemption for their ECF loss to the wine & gold last season. The Celtics and Wizards will also each have their field generals in the fold for the contest in Isaiah Thomas and John Wall respectively. You can bet there are plenty of guys amongst that group (and throw in Kemba Walker from the Hornets as well) who see themselves as rivals for Kyrie Irving’s spot as the starter in the East also.
The most interesting rivalries exist within the Western team, however, as Durant (though still surrounded by his new teammates) will again find himself on the same side as the partner he left behind, Russell Westbrook. The tension still seems pretty thick around the two, given their most recent clash in OKC, and their general avoidance of each other during the All Star Weekend festivities thus far. It remains to be seen if Steve Kerr feels bold enough to put Russ out there as the fifth member of his possible four Warrior lineup… but it should be fun to find out. Added to this is the spirited race for the regular season MVP… a race that includes not only Durant and Westbrook, but also fellow starters James Harden of the Rockets and Kawhi Leonard of the Spurs.
Which brings it full-circle to LeBron himself. As nearly the elder statesman of this year’s game (only the late Carmelo for Love replacement altered that fact), the one rivalry the King might still admit to is the one he shares with the rest of the League with respect to the MVP race. He’s still arguably the best player in the game… and an All Star Game is sometimes the perfect place to flex…
Here’s a link to the full lineups for easy reference.
Prediction: I expect the number three point shots made and attempted in this game to shatter the previous record… maybe even by halftime. The West should get out to a big lead behind the stable of MVP candidates on their side, but the East will mount a furious comeback (they do have both the MFQ and the Lord of the Fourth on the same team) to just edge out a victory, 171-169. Brad Stevens rides his tiny star enough to help him become the shortest player to win the ASMVP.
The festivities begin at 8pm EST on TNT. Enjoy the game, and chime in to discuss all your favorite All Star rivalries…
Did anyone read Kyrie’s post game comments where he was dissapointed in the lack of D and that he told his teammates he would be aggressive on that end? Can he do that during games that matter as well?
NBA just seems so dumb all around right now.
Heck, the world seems so dumb all around right now.
Well, off to sleep. Word is Kings waiving Galloway. Cook deserves a spot. We like Mack, a guy who fell out of the rotation on a team starved for PGs (& will Hill hurt a lot). Color me skeptical. FWIW, we’ll get to see how good AD & Cousins are now, I think they are overrated. Robins not Batmans. I’m not sure it is a good fit. They’ll get swept if they face GSW, IF they even catch Denver.
Maybe he’ll stay…

He might…but I’m not sure it’d be a great thing for the Pels…but they kinda have to do it…
Melo was by far the worst player in the ASG.
Someone (FTS? KJG?) was claiming the Cavs still have a chance to trade for him. For salary matching purposes, the Cavs would have to include some starters. Totally Insane!
I will say that if the Pels somehow get the 8th seed, they could give the Dubs a series with AD and Cousins…..they aren’t winning it, but they might make them work.
Here’s what I can’t figure out – how did the Celtics NOT come in with a better deal for Cousins. They had the assets. Did they not try, or are the Kings really that terribly run and turned down more picks for Buddy?
Because Danny Ainge is a hoarder…
I think Danny didn’t want him. Maybe he wants Butler. Or maybe he wants to keep all his ‘assets’, because he is completely unable to accept an equitable deal…

Something clearly happened…

Vivek is a terrible owner, basically…I would have traded Boogie two years ago, but they needed to get two firsts…seriously…

Oh no NOMAD!

Cavs probably hope it’s McLemore or Collison…
https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/833543308861460480
Or, if they buy out Tyreke Evans… he’d look pretty good in a Cavs uni as a backup playmaker…
No thanks on McLemore. I was thinking we could use him last year, but I am down on him. I’m not sure he’s any more than bench flotsam, and he is terrible on defense.

This is probably one of the factors why they pulled the trigger too…

They should look at trading everyone of value on their roster for draft picks…but god, they should have gotten better than that for Cousins, and I am not a fan…
That must be the pick the Cavs got in the Hickson (?) trade that went to the Bulls for WhatHisName. I am pretty sure that if it isn’t cashed in by now, it turns into an unprotected second round pick.

Casspi also going with Cousins to NO according to reports…
Good gravy…
The first rounder is 1-3 protected also… wow
Looks like a done deal. Cousins to New Orleans! Whoa!
I have no idea what to think of this reported deal…and I am not a Boogie fan….it’s a disaster if the Pels can’t resign him…
Well, looks like not two firsts, so I’d say bad deal for the Kings….it’s terrible for the Pels if they can’t resign him. Maybe the prospect of playing with Davis will entice him…but seriously, Kings had to get two first round picks for him…
He is from Alabama though, and New Orleans is the closest team to home, so you never know…
Can hardly wait until Vivek leads the chant of ‘BUDDY ROCKS!!’…
Woj now says the Boogie chase is down to two teams. Stein says:
https://twitter.com/ESPNSteinLine/status/833531325156057089
And now it’s a done deal. Woj and Stein are filling in the blanks.
So much for the fans hating, the stars don’t hate each other.

I’m disgusted every year it’s the same outcome. East loses again. Boo.
Setting the bait for Cols…
Oops, that was meant for warriorsfan…
LoL Yeah I forget about that guy…. Alot….

This not one of the better All Star Weekends in recent memory…
It’s time to put the all-star games in all sports out of their misery. They were conceived in an era of no or limited TV sports broadcasting and coverage. But now fans can see the best players on TV or online all the time. So the games have long outlived their usefulness.
Pretty much….this and the fact that the players all take it as less than an exhibition, and the All Star games in every sport are terrible…(the Pro Bowl game has been terrible from day one, but it’s even more terrible nowadays…if it’s even possible to be more terrible…)
Too much money to be made in the cities where they happen though…
I can dream, can’t I? ;)
Baseball all star game is all right.
AD took 39 shots to get his 52 points…
Teams combined for 122 three attempts… they made 43…
Can’t believe my ridiculous prediction was more than 10 points short on both sides… yikes…
Cousins only played 2 minutes. Now that’s funny.
Maybe they are trading him…
https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/833522465154412544
Guess Vivek changed his mind… yet again…
https://twitter.com/SInow/status/833522947008655360
Time for Ainge to finally do it and send all his ‘assets’ to the Kings…pull the trigger, Danny, you’ll be known as a genius…
More likely that Kerr doesn’t like the pr!ck
Cousins for AD…that’s why they’re showcasing AD in this game…
Woj has a confusing series of tweets. I think he means the Kings have zeroed in one team to make a deal with…but he hasn’t said who it is.
Only thing left would be for West to score 200…
And… he’s got it!
This is awful.
I watched a few minutes of last year’s game, and I had the same conclusion. Not watching this one. Guys going for uncontested dunks and a billion threes….no thanks…
It’s really just devolved into an exhibition…
AD wants 50…
I think Bron is done… minutes police got him…
Minutes only add up when you play D.
On mostly pedestrian dunks and putbacks, but still…
https://twitter.com/PelicansPR/status/833520766922719232
Really should go to sleep why I am still watching this trash
Now AD officially just broke the record with 44…
Russ just broke the record… 44 points for a new ASG record… on a half court shot that was supposed to be an alley oop for AD… crazy
Nevermind… they gave it to Harden…
Wonder if we’ll see any more of LBJ or KI…
https://twitter.com/BenGolliver/status/833519094456528896
That is pretty impressive…
East current lineup of Wall, Thomas, Lowry, Millsap and Melo ain’t gonna get it done…
AD has 38 now… four points shy of Wilt… Russ also now has 38…
Wow… Lord of the Fourth has missed two threes already this quarter…
So true…

O.K EVIL YOU ARE MY “CHILL PILL ” FOR MY NERVOUS TENDICIES—IF CELTS GET BUTLER –IS THERE NOW REASON TO BE SOMEWHAT CONCERNED
Still no…
I think they’d have a puncher’s chance….it would really depend on what they gave up…
Russ tryin’ to steal the MVP from AD…
Russ went to the well one too many times…
