Live Thread: Cavs @ Bulls
2017-03-30The Cavs are in Chicago for their final meeting of the season. They have lost their last four against the Bulls. During their last matchup in Cleveland, the Cavs were blown out by 18 and the Bulls hit 15 3s (They average just 7.2 a game, which is 30th in the league).
Cleveland has been slipping as of late. Their defense is horrendous. They are .500 in their last ten and have a defensive rating of 112.6, which is 27th in the league.
Opposing teams penetrate with ease, guys switch because fighting through a screen is too much work, people consistently forget to stop the ball in transition, and LeBron James chills on the weak side and yells as no one helps over. The Cavs are the the second oldest team in the league, but at the same time, three of their main rotation players aren’t even old: Iman Shumpert (26), Tristan Thompson (26), and Kyrie Irving (25). Age doesn’t explain everything going on with the defense right now.
In short, the team isn’t trying hard enough. Stopping the ball in transition isn’t hard, yet no one does it. After penetration gets an opponent low into the paint, three Cavs will drop down onto that guy while another player from the opposing team just ducks in for a slam. If this team could eliminate four or five of their mental lapses a night, they could easily get back on track. It might take some energy, but it’s worth it.
The Cavs put up just 74 points against the Spurs Monday. They’ve put up more than that in a half this year. Hopefully, that disastrous performance gives them some motivation to get up tonight.
Things to Watch:
- The Cavalier defense needs to show that it exists. Tonight, look for Tyronn Lue to have guys completely shut down the 3-line for Chicago. Chicago isn’t a good shooting team, but the Cavs know they can’t let them go off for 15 3s again. It’s a matter of pride.
- Kevin Love should work down low to get Chicago’s bigs into trouble. Robin Lopez is a good rim protector, but he won’t be able to keep up with Love outside of the paint. A few fouls on Lopez late in the game would make it easier to get to the rim for Kyrie Irving and James.
- This is a big game for LeBron James. James said the team is in a “delicate,” place after their loss to the Spurs. He needs to respect his own words and lead by example, whether it’s keeping the ball moving or stopping the ball in transition.
I’m not sure the Cavs will right the ship tonight. I’m picking the Bulls, 114-104.
Kyle Korver will miss the game because of a sore foot.
All the talent on this team is either old and slow or young and not smart or injured or just was injured. But we should still beat rondo
Don’t recall a single deflection that quarter after 7-8 in the first half. The quarter took the good feel away fast from the first half
I think 3 minutes of lig or dwill could be a solution, at least you could yell at shump for 3 straight min wondering why youre wasting $10m a year
Time for the Bulls to max Mirotic…
I see virtually nothing positive so far. Lue still clueless. Defensive glass an issue. The 1 guy on the other team who can shoot goes nuts.
Old habits die hard… coughing up 37 point third….
We are soooo bad at basketball. This is so hard to watch
WTF was shump doing on that valentine three? FREE LIGGINS.
Liggins is not a solution nate
Who would know? He seemed to be earlier in the year before he was rooted to the bench…
He’s their best wing defender, aside from Lebron, when he tries. Not like Shump is bringing it on the offensive end lately…
Ty lue is asleep at the wheel
Kyrie came to PLAY!
#tntbulls fighting to keep their streak alive. Cavs helping out at end of third.
I can’t handle how bad shump is on offense. Not bad but just plain dumb.
http://www.pleasestopdribblingShump.com. Just falling apart again
Lue is always one possession late on timeouts…
15-2 run…
OK, gotta pop that A-Hole on the schnaz.
God, I’m tired of Mirotic hitting everything against the Cavs…
http://Www.please…..
This Kyrie feature lineup isn’t great when Kyrie is cold…
Irving a little shot happy.
Mamba mentality. Down 7.
Mirotic is getting out of hand…
Freaking Mirotic can’t miss.
TT strong on that board and put-back…
That was a terrible foul call on Channing…
JR with his fourth assist — all four of them to TT at the hoop.
How about Derrick Williams for a little B-12 energy boost?
Starting to look like every other Bulls-Cavs game this season…
Textbook charge taken by LBJ…
Shoot the ball Channing and don’t make a tough pass
JR should just do that inside pass all the time…

Irving’s going to go NBA jam mode
Fourth on Love…
Kyrie may cry
Lazy plays & loose shots. We still suck.
Huh. Lets’s see if tey can get the nergy back. Kyrie with a nice bucket.
Halfway through the third and losing to the Bulls. This team is a joke!
Good to see we’ve got a troll back – we must be doing something right
I hate Rondo’s shoulders
I wish the Cavs had someone like Perkins to set some illegal screens on Rondo.
If Wade was healthy, we’d be losing. Game tomorrow, RJ & Korver out, & Love in foul trouble & Lue playing only 8 guys. We’ll fade late & lose tomorrow.
Other than that… how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?
Lol Mr Hyde time
11-0 run by the Bulls…
This is the Cavs D we’re used to…
Cavs Energy lagging. Bron with an awful shot there.
Ty lues face matched mine after lbjs shot
These runners aren’t going for LeBron…
Looked like Kyrie turned an ankle…
Let Rondo shoot all day…
So the first half was proof of concept, and now they’re ready to coast on D again until the playoffs.
Guessing JR fell asleep there?
JR fell asleep there…
Three fouls on Kev now…
Mirotic would be in the Hall of Fame if he only played the Cavs
Good three from Kyrie…
Mirotic is Shumpert-esque when he puts the ball on the floor…
Don’t forget to get back guys…
Biggest disparity in a long time on pts in the paint. In our favor.
Cavs winning points in paint 26-12…
I’ve never seen a team like this.
Bron now 5 points from passing Shaq…
IS it me or does this tick you off more?
What? That they are capable of playing better D?
It’s relieving, and ironic. No idea what to think. Bulls aren’t the best test, but good grief the Cavs aren’t even the same team we’ve been seeing
A little more but then again I can be seduced easily by the Cavs come playoff time

Bulls down to 32.6% shooting…
Great half by LBJ! Solid defensive half by the Cavs in general… if Kyrie can start hitting shots, this game will be over…
Darn. They almost had a sub-40 defensive half.
James with too much energy and dribbling ends up missing a tough fade.
The thing that I’m noticing is that the Cavs are trying to play with better pace. The Cavs making quick decisions on offense which is great.
Zipser is not very good….
Looks like we’re sacrificing offensive rebounds in order to get back in transition D. Frustrating to see so many one-and-done’s, but I can’t argue with the the strategy so far.
You are right.
Pretty ragged play. Nice to see the Cavs on the better end of it though.
Why is Irving so easy to trap?
Transient tunnel vision. But then he does this…

Exactly, he always drive right into the trap.
When Shump misses a shot he makes damn sure he misses it….
Rondo blows the layup… that’s really hard to do I think…
