Live Thread: Cavs @ Spurs
2018-01-23The Cavs are in San Antonio to take on the Spurs. This game is pretty big for Cleveland considering they just had a team meeting filled with lots of drama and finger pointing at…….Kevin Love. Yea, the one that came to the Cavs, gave up shots, has played out of position, become a serviceable defender, averaged near a double-double, had his role jerked around whenever another teammate needed something to change, and actually seemed to give some effort most of the time during this horrendous season.
Tyronn Lue actually defended him. Lue’s comment was in response to the team attacking Love for playing just 3:08 during a loss to the Thunder, where the Cavs gave up 148 points without playing overtime:
“I mean, that’s crazy,” Lue said. “If Kevin was out there we might have given up 170. Who knows, man. We’ve got to be better, got to just stay together. We’re being tested right now. This is when your true character comes out and the character of who you are as a person and as a player. We’ve got to step up and play basketball (Joe Vardon, Cleveland.com).”
My take: Kevin was actually sick. Crazy, I know. What I wished happened though: Love told the team that he was important and they didn’t believe him, so he decided to fake sick, leave the stadium early, and watch the Cavs embarrass themselves. Or, Love had a rap feature he needed to do for an Iman Shumpert track and didn’t want it to be late. He was inspired and just had to rap, so he left the court. Those are absurd takes, but for this team they’re actually believable. This team has almost reached what some people call the Tyson Zone. That’s a zone where no matter how absurd the story is about a person or organization, it is pretty believable.
Now, let’s look at the Spurs. Gregg Popovich had a talk with Tony Parker recently about going to the bench. Tony Parker pretty much replied, “awesome, I’ll help the team and talk about wine with Manu, while I keep the bench warm for my protege, Dejounte Murray.” True story.
In fact, the Spurs have built such a strong culture that even when Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Kawhi Leonard is frustrated with the Spurs, most people think it’s a bogus story.
Some outlets have said this game actually means something for the Spurs since they’re 4-6 in their last ten, have changed starting guards, and had to shutdown their best player to rehab a hamstring that’s been bugging him since before the season. It doesn’t. Let’s look at some keys to the game and see why:
- The Spurs still have the second best defense in the league. The Cavs have the 29th ranked defense by .4 points per 100 possessions. They are 3-7 in their last ten. Cleveland needs to defend if they want a win. In the last ten games, the Spurs have given up 100 points just twice, the Cavs have given up 100 points nine times.
- The Spurs have had random players step up and fill voids. Players are playing above themselves and contributing. Guys with no names. The Cavs, on the other hand, do not. The Spurs aren’t supposed to be in third place considering their best player has only played nine games. No player of meaning has missed significant time for Cleveland. Everyone on the Spurs can beat you, and Cleveland needs to play that way.
- The Spurs work teams in the paint. LaMarcus Aldridge often gets the ball, attracts a double, then whips a pass before screening to help another teammate pop open. And, he gets his. He’s averaging 22.3 points to go with 8.9 boards a night. Kevin Love has a task tonight covering him, which he most likely will considering Pau Gasol is out for the Spurs tonight.
- And, that leads to Cleveland’s defensive schemes. They need to play the Spurs straight up. They are too smart to switch and trap against without being precise. If any Cleveland player ends up in no-man’s land on switches the Spurs will seek the open man out and make the team pay.
I’m not sure the Cavs will pull a win out tonight or even if their meeting to air grievances will mean anything. The team has been complaining all season. This game may just be one more step in their downward spiral. I hope not, but I’m picking the Spurs 124-102.
Cavs have nobody who can guard 105 year old Tony Parker…
Part of the problem of having a guy 5’8″ in today’s NBA who isn’t Isiah Thomas quick (hall of famer) is that he can’t set guys up because of the lack of passing angles due to his height and guys crowding him
That FT barely made the rim…
Bron just gator armed that FT… sheesh
*LeBron loses ball on a between the legs dribble* Webber: “There’s something you don’t see very often.”
Nate: “at least twice a game if you’re a Cleveland fan.”

I think Frye doesn’t get traded if Lue actually utilizes his players that can contribute instead of washed up husks like rose, TT, etc.
JR no factor on offense again. And he failed to box out twice already. Green playing with some fire
Jr is donezo. Hate to say it but he needs to be out of rotation. So so bad
Cavs still look sloppy on both ends…is Pop gonna play Aldridge entire game? Haha
Cavs four on five on offense with Tristan and four on five on defense with Isaiah.
lest you forget JR problem = 5 on 3 for most part.
LBJ has really fallen back to earth. struggling with handle, shot, and finishing over/thru guys
January LeBron is the worst LeBron.
Why do they keep switching JR onto LMA? Makes no sense… unless you’re the Spurs
Nice move by Kev underneath…
Wow… LeBron just got “stripped” by Bertans…
We are awful.
It’s kind of inexcusable to not corral a rebound on a FT miss…
JR has to chuck the roller there.
I’d settle for upchuck on the roller…
IT’s shoulders move a LOT from side to side as he walks or shifts his weight from foot to foot. Bet it wasn’t that pronounced before his injury.
Parker still so good at the pick and roll…
True dat. They get a good look every time.
Spurs w/out Kawhi, Gay, Gasol, & Manu.
May be able to win this game.
It with a very favorable flop and foul on three
Isaiah’s flopping is annoying even when he’s on your own team.
+1
This is the one I was trying to find earlier…
“Where is the ‘D’ in Clevelan?” graphic from TNT
Just genius right there….
Another green tip from zero box out
Jeff Green really awesome so far
No one boxing out
Certainly not JR or Rose…

2 of Bron, Love, IT, & Wade should be out there at all times.
can only watch the gamecast here in costa rica, but what i kept seeing was : drose turnover, spurs oreb. sound right?
Yeah. Wade has gotten stripped 2-3 times too. However without more shooters than korver out there, the lanes are a lot tighter.
Koufos has also not entered the game for Kings… hmmmm
Who else would the Cavs have to include asssuming Cavs get Hill for Frye and Shump
I feel like that crazy difficult transition 3 is the only time korver gets an open shot anymore because he is the only perimeter guy that teams worry about other than Frye anymore
Agree. He never gets easy shots anymore. Play him with some other shooters (Frye, Love, IT, JR) or Bron to maximize him.
Ya. That would seem like the obvious solution. I really can’t figure out the love for TT other than to try to boost his trade value. It seems to be having the opposite effect

Green dunked all over Courtney Gaines!
Bertans got put on a POSTER
Green with a nice dunk
Jeff Green!
Wasn’t prepared for Jeff Green to be one of the few bright spots this year.
JEFF!
<3
Why are rose and TT in the rotation? Is this a political thing? Frye needs to get all the backup minutes. At most TT needs to play 6-7 minutes a night.
WOWW!!
Spurs will beat us w/out Kawhi.
So many mental mistakes/lapses in concentration. They aren’t exactly feeding off that team meeting.
Bertans at free throw line
3 in a row.
More good D. Rose out to lunch. 2. quick TOs.

These are some questionable foul calls tbh…
JEFF GREEN. Not Danny Green!
Wade and rose getting stripped a lot.
Good D there.
Rose is bad and needs to be cut
I didn’t know Danny Green could jump that high…
DWade takes away… DRose gives right baack….
So. Many. Offensive. Rebounds.
Dig the Korver Green two man game…
TT is so worthless offensively
Rose, Wade, Green, TT = terrible.
Roberto Doran and TT: hands of stone
I expected Rose to shatter like Mr. Glass on that hit…
This unit be hot garbage for the Cavs. No spacing. No d. Too many tos
Not enough shooting on the floor… would love to see Channing just one more time in a Cavs uni…
So, Kareem, Karl Malone, Kobe, MJ, Wilt, Dirk, Doc, LeBron.
Congrats to Bron. BTW, he could get Doc tonight = 30,026.
Who is the middle-schooler in a Spurs uniform who just had an uncontested tip-in?
Murray
Zero blocking out…
